For the longest time I thought Bart had no teeth. Then the Internet came out and I could examine pictures of him. He does have teeth including three-inch canines. I was relieved. A lot of bear trainers have the canines removed. I am happy Bart was left un-mutilated.

@hans wurst The bear is one he trains for movies. So, while he's not a circus pet, he's also more than just a "friend", if you can even apply that word to bears. Bears have the capacity for tolerance and even affection, sure, but it's important to not to give them human traits. That's what gets people in trouble. Remember the power you're dealing with always.

I hear you but just think about the fact that Bart was born in captivity. It's all he knew. The Zues family would take the bears into the wilderness and let them run and play and they always came back to the trailers on their own. He even took them to the ice cream place for 5 or 6 ice cream cones. I have so much respect for the Zues and what we can learn from them and the bears.

I was at the zoo in front of the exhibit for Grizzlies and didn't realize that the bear was down in a pit about ten feet away in the enclosure. When he climbed up out of the pit into view the hairs on my arm and head stood up, and he wasn't even facing me. I know zoos are not the best environment for wild animals, but I feel that the experience of seeing the animals greatly increases the amount of money that is donated to animal causes and the general wish to protect animals in general.

Poachers and bad hunters should not just have a possible fine and/or a little jail time. They should face an enormous lifetime fine and many many years of jail time. The park service is so wrong for euthanizing motherless cubs. They should have their own facilities to care for such bears since they know this will happen. Doug and those he works with really proved they have known what they are doing with they successfully raised two cubs who had already been with their mother and had more of the "wildness" in them that Bart 1 did.

And supposedly the man is released from prison in less than five years to resume his evil. Man should be forced to work off the full value of the money he gained killing the adult bear, and then exiled to live in a city somewhere in the lower 48, never to return to any wilderness are on pain of life imprisonment.

They really should reconsider how he is credited. "Keeper", "Guardian"...something other than "Owner" as you can't "own" a life or what nature intended to be wild and free.
