  • Bart the Bear™ was born in a zoo in 1977 and adopted by Doug and Lynne Seus and trained to be in films. The Seuses grand adventures with Bart took them from the Austrian Alps to the bejeweled backstage of the Academy Awards. Bart appeared in hundreds of films, including "The Bear", "The Great Outdoors", "Legends of the Fall", "Clan of the Cave Bear", and "The Edge", among others. He passed away in 2000. This video is a tribute to Bart, the Seuses, and the conservation nonprofit they created to protect habitat for wild grizzlies, The Vital Ground Foundation. Since its founding in 1990, Vital Ground has helped enhance, restore and conserve 600,000 acres of wildlife habitat in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia.. For more information or to make a donation to Vital Ground, visit: www.vitalground.org.
    Vital Ground extends its sincere thanks to Manitou Motion Picture Company for the use of this short documentary. Visit them at: www.manitoupix.com.

    I had the pleasure of meeting Bart face to face when I made a stop on my vacation in 1997, and let me tell you... I've never met a gentler, kinder, and more monstrously sized creature in my life. All Doug needed to say was "Bart, get angry" and you'd think that bear was about to eat you whole. But the Doug would say "easy, big guy" and he'd literally turn into a big teddy bear.

    Bart’s 23 years on this planet were filled with love, attention, enrichment, and FOOD. He was the most hardworking and the most talented bear that has ever appeared on camera. Even 23 years after his passing, his legacy is still going strong. Rest easy, big fella. ❤

      Do you ever think about our ancestors for a moment, maybe there was a man like Doug 1,000 years ago who tamed a wild bear cub, fostering a kindly bond together. Then think about how his community would view him, or anybody really.
      Compare that to how he's viewed today. Today he is a kindred man to these bears, and it makes us all reflect positively on life and all creation.
      Back then, Doug would be like a druid shaman god-speaking woods traveler. He'd probably be socially ostracized, but spiritually revered and confided in by those who sought him out of piety.
      It would be a strange world.

    • @augman9552
      @augman9552 6 лет назад +2

      Aren’t they the same just from different parts of the country? I always thought Kodiak bears lived on Kodiak island and work coastal bears that grew much larger because of the food they had readily available but thought they were all technically grizzly bears please correct me if I’m wrong

    • @claymac7895
      @claymac7895 5 лет назад

      Genetically they are the same animal. Brown bears are simply grizzlies that live near the coast which gives them access to salmon, thus giving them much more size than the inland bears who have to hunt down elk and moose for all their food. Bart was raised in captivity and thus had access to all the food he wanted/needed, which gave him his great size.

    • @Dokker62
      @Dokker62 4 года назад +2

      Skeleton of kodiaks is lightly bigger and more massive than of a grizzly, comparable to polar bears. Also there are distinct differences in appearance. Depending on food ressources grizzlies and kodiaks can reach almost equal size and weight though. Interestingly the monstrous kodiak bears are supposed to be less aggressive than grizzlies as they established a kind of peaceful coexistence within the rather small territory of Kodiak Island during recent millenia.

    I can't believe how enormous of a loss a Grizzly bear like Bart was. How many of them do you think are capable of living their whole life with a human and not killing him/her? Too few. I only hope his new bears can be just as good. I believe in them.

    • @alasskaluna2446
      @alasskaluna2446 8 лет назад +14

      Well there are more capable of doing that than you might think. There wasn't really anything special about Bart, it's just that he was adopted and trained from a young age. Bears are very intelligent as we know. Certainly you're far more likely to get a human killing a bear than vice versa.
      In China, they keep them in tiny cages they can't even turn around in, for up to 20 years, and milk them daily for their stomach bile for their useless traditional medicines. It's a torturous process. Bears suffer enormously at the hands of humans, as do many animals. It's heart warming to see the bond between Bart and Doug :)

    28 years after, they're in awful zoos and I don t know where they are all !...I'm sooooo sad about that...
    Take a look at this link.....
    Doug, Lynne....I should be so honored simply if you could read these few words (sorry for the faults !!!) and if you just could doing a little "Hello" from your so far away mountains....I should be so proud and happy...
    God take care of you two and Bart too...he's now your "litlle" Angel.....
    Peace, an excellent health and happyness for you for ever and ever...

    Beautiful story. What a talent the bear was. I like hearing about his friendly relationship with Anthony Hopkins. Two awe inspiring thespians, who couldn’t be more different, working together.

    No other human on earth got to breathe the last breath of a Grizzley Bear named Bart, truly an amazing story as tears filled my eyes when Doug explained Bart breathing his last breath into Doug's mouth. I've had a dog named Lassie that saved my life: not the same size you actually see on TV, rather a Sheltie that loved her mom and dad so much. I was walking down our backyard 1 day to feed Lassie, at the time I was having AFIB: not knowing at the time what was happening to my heart? I started getting very rubbery legged: I just knew I was headed for a fall, not far from me was a big rock as I thought to myself and began to pray to God, please don't let my head hit that rock🙏🙏🙏, Then Lassie began to bark profusely, so loud, and almost ready to go completely out: I could still faintly hear her barks 🦮! She kept me from passing out. I got to feed her, gave her a hug, and thanked her for saving me with kisses, she kept licking me instead of eating her food. My wife called from her work 15 minutes later as I explained how Lassie saved my life: I could her my wife sobbing, worried about me. The next day my Cardiologist had a Haulter Monitor put on me for 1 week, after the first day of wearing it the doctor called me and asked why I was working out so hard: my wife laughed because she knew I was sitting not doing anything strenuous activity: She explained to the doctor: he's is just sitting? The sadest part of my life when I found Lassie on our back deck, not moving as tears filled my eyes: I had to go to the garage to explain to my wife: Lassie is no longer here? She became puzzled by what I said: She knew as more tears filled my eyes: grabbed me and hugged me: She explained to me to remember the good things about Lassie, how she saved my life: my wife being older than me, she also had Lassie long before we even met. I still struggle with losing Lassie, she was more than a dog to me and my wife. She was like our child, so, I understand about Doug losing Bart, it's even harder because that Bart Bear breathed his last breath in Doug's mouth. My thoughts and prayers for you Doug and your family.🙏🙏🙏🙏

    Wow, every time I watch this beautiful video I can't stop crying 😢. I strongly believe that Doug's and Bart's influence through iconic movies led to December 2017 complete hunting ban on grizzly bears 🐻 in British Columbia. That was a very special day for me. I absolutely love bears and respect their space. Through years I've been watching for hours at the time at a local Vancouver mountain 2 beautiful grizzly bears on 5 acres fenced natural habitat. What a intelligent creatures, Grinder "interior grizzly" would recognize me instantly, since I've been visiting for last 15 years. God bless Mr Seus and Bart and other actor bears. 🙏

    I fell in love with Bart the Bear when I saw him in THE BEAR and it broke my heart when I heard of his death. This is such a touching video of Doug and Lynne speaking about Bart. I understand EXACTLY what Doug meant when he told of Bart's last breath in his face. Three years ago, I lost my 14 year old Australian Terrier to cancer. She put up a good fight, but let me know when it was time. I truly believe that until a person has loved an animal, a part of their soul remains unawakened.

    And what an actor...I think the Edge is one of greatest movies ever made and best bear acting ever.Considering Revenant was made 25 years later the edge mauling scene of Steve and the angry face of Bart is unbelievable awsome.

    I remember sitting at my computer and reading that Bart had passed. I cried for hours. I still cry when I see videos of him or watch his movies. Yeah, they were his movies, He was the star in all of them. It breaks my heart to see Doug in such anguish from his loss. We were lucky to have been around to see just how spectacular Doug and Bart were as a team and family. While just watching these videos, it occurred to me just how similar my dog, a 135lb Great Pyrenees, and a bear play. it brings a smile to my face. Thank you to Doug and Bart for some great times in my life. Yep, I'm crying again.

    This man really lived the true American dream! Just look at that backdrop of his property. I have to tell you I am reminded of this way of life when I see him and his wife in their house of my Uncle who was very similar. He loved the American west and had horses. In those days the American west was everywhere from fashion to decor and log cabins. This was an incredible relationship that should never be mistaken as it’s so important to understand and remember that these are wild animals.

    had the pleasure of knowing Doug and his wonderful wife, their son was my helper with Helidrill, and he had to take leave to make "Clan of the cave bear", and I rented a house from them back in about 1986. when I took my son to meet Bart the Bear, it was an experience i,ll never forget, the size of this bear was ominous. All I could think of was, how in the world could someone perpusly destroy such a magnificent creature. I even got to meet the two little ones when Doug first got them.. God bless guys,,,, R.I.P. BART
