I had the pleasure of meeting Bart face to face when I made a stop on my vacation in 1997, and let me tell you... I've never met a gentler, kinder, and more monstrously sized creature in my life. All Doug needed to say was "Bart, get angry" and you'd think that bear was about to eat you whole. But the Doug would say "easy, big guy" and he'd literally turn into a big teddy bear.
Bart’s 23 years on this planet were filled with love, attention, enrichment, and FOOD. He was the most hardworking and the most talented bear that has ever appeared on camera. Even 23 years after his passing, his legacy is still going strong. Rest easy, big fella. ❤

Do you ever think about our ancestors for a moment, maybe there was a man like Doug 1,000 years ago who tamed a wild bear cub, fostering a kindly bond together. Then think about how his community would view him, or anybody really. Compare that to how he's viewed today. Today he is a kindred man to these bears, and it makes us all reflect positively on life and all creation. Back then, Doug would be like a druid shaman god-speaking woods traveler. I can't believe how enormous of a loss a Grizzly bear like Bart was. How many of them do you think are capable of living their whole life with a human and not killing him/her? Too few. I only hope his new bears can be just as good. I believe in them.
Well there are more capable of doing that than you might think. There wasn't really anything special about Bart, it's just that he was adopted and trained from a young age. Bears are very intelligent as we know. Certainly you're far more likely to get a human killing a bear than vice versa. In China, they keep them in tiny cages they can't even turn around in, for up to 20 years, and milk them daily for their stomach bile for their useless traditional medicines. It's a torturous process. Bears suffer enormously at the hands of humans, as do many animals. It's heart warming to see the bond between Bart and Doug :)
@@alasskaluna2446 he wasn’t special in the way that he was tame but that he knew how to perform on screen. He knew when the camera is on and that’s something you can’t expect from most bears
I loved Bart in the Great Outdoors. He made such an awesome movie even better. R.I.P Bart! :( My deepest sympathy goes out to Doug and Lynne Seus as their love for him is as strong as it gets.
When I see someone like you giving back so much love and time makes me wish I could do something. But as a retiree and living on structure money there's just not enough. But you rejuvenate my faith in mankind. I'm glad to know there's someone like you in this world. Keep up the good work.
I'm really touched by this story... I loved this bear since "The bear" movie, and still love him in "Legend of the Fall" and "The Edge". Sometimes I think that Bart was not a bear at all, but he had such an human part... We miss you pal, I hope to see you at Rainbow Bridge :)
I fell in love with Bart the Bear when I saw him in THE BEAR and it broke my heart when I heard of his death. This is such a touching video of Doug and Lynne speaking about Bart. I understand EXACTLY what Doug meant when he told of Bart's last breath in his face. Three years ago, I lost my 14 year old Australian Terrier to cancer. She put up a good fight, but let me know when it was time. I truly believe that until a person has loved an animal, a part of their soul remains unawakened.
Aren’t they the same just from different parts of the country? I always thought Kodiak bears lived on Kodiak island and work coastal bears that grew much larger because of the food they had readily available but thought they were all technically grizzly bears please correct me if I’m wrong
Genetically they are the same animal. Brown bears are simply grizzlies that live near the coast which gives them access to salmon, thus giving them much more size than the inland bears who have to hunt down elk and moose for all their food. Bart was raised in captivity and thus had access to all the food he wanted/needed, which gave him his great size.
Skeleton of kodiaks is lightly bigger and more massive than of a grizzly, comparable to polar bears. Also there are distinct differences in appearance. Depending on food ressources grizzlies and kodiaks can reach almost equal size and weight though. Interestingly the monstrous kodiak bears are supposed to be less aggressive than grizzlies as they established a kind of peaceful coexistence within the rather small territory of Kodiak Island during recent millenia.
But the Doug would say "easy, big guy" and he'd literally turn into a big teddy bear.

will always think of him while watching The great outdoors, Legends of the Fall and The Edge!!!!!
What a great couple!! I can't stop crying.
Just watched The Edge and was smitten with his performance. Great job and what a beautiful creature. Thank you for making him part of all our lives.
Doug, Lynne if you read these few words from France...I'm totally in admiration for your way of life and your way of bein in love with the AWSOME "little" Bart...I'm a great fan of him in every picture he played....
I have been so sad in 2000...but I m sure he is really in peace...you gave him a life in peace and harmony...
RIP little Bart...
And for you Doug, Lynne...you' re two humans beings like I never saw...two prophets....
The great suffering that I'm feeling now is too see all the little bears who played in the movie 'The Bear"
28 years after, they're in awful zoos and I don t know where they are all !...I'm sooooo sad about that...
Take a look at this link.....
Doug, Lynne....I should be so honored simply if you could read these few words (sorry for the faults !!!) and if you just could doing a little "Hello" from your so far away mountains....I should be so proud and happy...
God take care of you two and Bart too...he's now your "litlle" Angel.....
Peace, an excellent health and happyness for you for ever and ever...

He was one of a kind💜 🐼📼
@@alasskaluna2446 he wasn’t special in the way that he was tame but that he knew how to perform on screen. He knew when the camera is on and that’s something you can’t expect from most bears
Thanks for caring for my favorite animal s God will bless you both tha. Ar prachus to me
I loved Bart in the Great Outdoors. He made such an awesome movie even better. R.I.P Bart! :( My deepest sympathy goes out to Doug and Lynne Seus as their love for him is as strong as it gets.
Came here after watching The Edge....love to this couple who loved Bart. I love him now...RIP Bart.
When I see someone like you giving back so much love and time makes me wish I could do something. But as a retiree and living on structure money there's just not enough. But you rejuvenate my faith in mankind. I'm glad to know there's someone like you in this world. Keep up the good work.
So grateful you are so real that you shared that oneness soulmate bond. Weeping with you still.
I really think this is one of the most beautiful videos I have ever seen. Mr. Suess we need more people like you in this world
The fact they both land is so beautiful thank u
He was the greatest animal actor in the history of film
Grizzly bears are the smallest of the brown bear family. Bart was a Kodiak brown bear - the largest of the brown bear species. He was huge....
