Fusco was corrupted by HR, as they went to him in his most desperate hour. His wife left him and was going to get exclusive custody of his son. In the episode where they rescue Shaw and the girl, the girl says "I figured you out - you do have emotions, they are just dialed down low, like a volume knob" Here we see that Shaw is really hurting because she couldn't save both of them - and she knew Lionel well enough to know that as a father, he would wnat her to save his son.. Great acting by both of them.
Fusco's furious rage unleashed on that guy is some of the best acting I've seen to this day. You could see his blood boiling as he finally got justice for them messing with his family.

The whole HR arc is beautiful. It begins as one woman takes on a powerful and corrupt army, and it turns into 5 people taking on that same army. It takes all five of them looking out for one another to beat them. Fusco let’s himself get caught to let Reese and Carter escape, risking the key to Carter’s evidence, Finch sends Shaw to save Fusco, Shaw then realizes that Fusco would want his son to be save, so she protects Fusco’s son, this gives Fusco the opportunity to get the jump on the HR guy holding him and kills him.
This episode brought a tear to my eye, i felt Fusco's pain. It was the part of the series that changed him as a character all together, from stubborn detective to sinister vigilante. No wonder the episode was called 'The Crossing'.
This scene is one of the very best pieces of television ever filmed. Loved Lionel's character arc over the series. It was a show too intelligent to appeal to the masses.

Better even than Reese who definitely would have finished the job.
