Best explanatation I found in net rgarding using HeadRush and 4 cable method onto an tube amplifier. The FX LOOP trick as an AMP in chain - priceless! Good Job!
Just to add to this. I have a 4 cable set up with my EVH Lunchbox and line 6 PODHD. A cool thing i discovered is that you can set your amp to be on the overdrive channel constantly, and then if you want to run pedals in the front and and after you put the fx loop in the patch. However if you take out the fx loop of the preset, everything goes straight onto the power section of your amp (Clean Channel) so you can run an amp and cab sim if you want without changing amp channels. Basically means one button press on the multi effects changes your preset and technically changes your amp channel at the same time.

This was literally the best explenation video in matters Headrush connection to an amp, I've ever seen. Very well done, Dave! Sorry for my bad english. Stupid german guy here. :-) But I've still got one question: Do you switch your Marshall channels with the headrush via MIDI? Sorry, still one question: I'm using a Diezel Herbert and i'm actually happy with the basic sound. But now and then i asked myself, how would it sound, when i could use one of the many amp modelers, cabinets/IRs, which are included in the headrush. But i guess with the 4-cable-method, there will be no chance, right? Obviously it would be a kind of redundancy/duplication ore something? Thx in advance and many greets from germany. :-)
Thanks mate! That’s a great compliment, I’m glad you like the video. Haha your English is fine, I can’t speak any German so you’re doing better than me. I can’t switch my Marshall with the HeadRush because it doesn’t have Midi. I think it is possible if your amp allows for it, but I’ve never done it myself. I wouldn’t use any amps or cabs in the HeadRush while using 4 cable method. It is basically running an amp into another amp. In 4 cable you’re using your real amps sound and treating the HeadRush as your effects. Hope that’s helped!
@@DaveWebbMusic Hi Dave, i am still a bit confused about a few parameters. Sorry. Are you always using the same FX Loop-parameters (100, 0.0, 5.8) as in your video, or does it depend on the individual rigs? And what about your "rig-with"-value in the OUT settings? I guess it's just stereo/mono thing, but it influences the sound a lot. Thx in advance :-)
This is exactly what I have been looking for thank you! I am looking at getting a MX5 and want to use my good ol blackstar ht5 (this is my first rig) so I presume it should be all the same on the MX5 as it has the same settings and inputs mainly?
Hey Dave that was a great vid! Easy to understand. Thanks for posting! One question - is there a way to switch from the Marshall amp itself to an internal amp in the Headrush without changing the cable setup? Thanks!
Hi Dave, if you want to connect the pedalboard directly to the headrush 112 speaker. (no mixer, just direct), do you move the amp/line switch to amp or to line?
Great video thanks. One of the things I've noticed is a material drop in volume when using the 4cm with my Headrush PB and Diezel D-Moll or Engl SE. Can you set the loop to Line instead of Amp or would this damage something?
Freakin awesome video man! This headrush definitely does this to me 🤯 lol. But it does so much cool stuff. So when playing live if you don’t want to take an amp you just plug straight into the PA? Or am I not understanding that correctly? Thanks!
Thanks for watching dude. You are correct. The point of these is that you do not need an amp. Everything is modelled in the unit so it can go straight to PA. You can of course still use it with an amp, hence this video. 🤘🏼
Hey mate. Check out this video ruclips.net/video/E23hZdXwEOU/видео.html I talk about adding Stomps using the FX loop. Works a treat cos you can place wherever you want in the chain. If you’re gonna use a real amp though 🤔 hmm… I think you’re going to be a bit more limited with where you can place it.
Quick question man in the new rig setup you made if i chose to want to use my stock distortion from my amp (black spirit 200 h and k) would i simply add nothing before the effects loop block in the chain and then just assign modulation effects afterwards such as reverb chorus flangers?
Hey Dave, i`ve got two questions regarding the 4 Cable Method. Do you always set the position of the switch (RACK/STOMP) to "stomp" and how did you set your MASTER volume level? In one post someone recommended to set the main level always to max, while using the 4 cable method. Thx in advance and many greets from germany.
I have mine set to ‘stomp’ and it worked fine. It wouldn’t hurt to try both, it’s only a level thing (as far as I know) much like the “AMP/LINE” switch. From memory my MASTER volume is cranked. Again, just play with it until you get the desired level. Of course start low and then gradually turn it up.
What are you turning on at 2:39? the amp 's dirty channel? I'm going to try this so I can use my Mesa Mini Rec, and just have the MX5 as an FX board with modulation & delay/reverb. I played the Mini Rec recently at a gig, and while the MX5 can be good for a compact solution, there is no comparison to a real tube amp, esp for those of us older folks that grew up with said tube amps ; ) Thanks Dave!
Yeah I was changing channels on the amp. 4 cable with these modelers is awesome. If you’ve got an amp you love, you can basically add in your dream pedalboard. Have fun dude.
I'm using a catalyst 200. I usually set my catalyst input on the amp in mode but with the 4 cables technique it sounds way better leaving it on "fx loop" mode. Now, the tricky part, I'm using a mx5. When i put the main out level in "amp" mode instead of "line" the volume cut down by about 1/2 i'm not sure why, and I don't really notice any sound difference between line and amp. So, why is it supposed to be on "amp"? Same with Fx-return level, you can pick rack or stomp. Stomp lower the volume about 1/3 and there is a little sound difference but it's hard to tell since the volume becomes too low to hear it well to comparate with rack mode. Anyone knows what the "best" settings should be? And why does it sounds way louder on main out set on "line"?
I have a 5150 iconic and a seperate 6band EQ in its FX loop. I want to use the iconics green and red ch’s for my distortion which are great and the headrush for modulation and reverb. How do i hook up the mx5 to it to continue to use the EQ and the headrush effects?
Hi, i would like to use my fender blues deluxe issue amp for clean as well as for crunch sound, and not the amps models in the Gigboard. Gigboard will be used just as effect pedals. how will be the correct cabling and setup within the Gigboard?do I have to connect ext amp output to the fender blues deluxe issue input l or ll (not to the foot switch input)? or using mono output to input l or ll. or, should I better use 4 cable setup? thx for your reply soon.
Depends where you want to place your effects. If you like everything before the amp, then just plug straight into the front. Personally I like my reverbs, delays and some mod effects in the FX loop. In that case you would need to use 4 cable.
Thanks for this! BTW: what does the #2 (Headrush Send -> Guitar input) do exactly? I tried on my Boss Katana Head and it doesn't seem to do anything - I think when I do Headrush Output -> Katana Return it seems to 'disable' the Katana Input (e.g. if I plug the guitar into the Katana Input, there's no signal that passes through it). I'm also not 100% sure what the Katana Send -> Headrush Return does either... it seems slightly redundant since the Katana's onboard FX are active just with Headrush Out->Katana Return.
The HeadRush send is sending everything you have before your amp. For example, overdrive, distortion, chorus, etc. Whatever you like. They all hit the front end of your amp. Every after that is essentially in the FX loop of your amp. Delay, reverb etc. Using a Katana you obviously have a lot of already great effects, so you’re right, you don’t really need to do 4 cable with it. I’d check in the Tone Studio for Katana to see if you have the send/return enabled or not. Might be something like that…? In theory it all should work as I’ve demo’d if the cabling is right.
Man, me too! It sounds so good. 🥰 Well I was using the Boss Tube Amp Expander, which attenuates the volume, so I was able to crank the amp and get that awesome saturation but play at a reasonable volume. Cranking the 100w head without the Tube Amp Expander is bloody loud! Using these kind of amps at home is 100% achievable but it does cost a little extra. Totally worth it though!
How do i run my other amp on the other side of the stage with the four cable method i have a marshall head on each side of the stage i use to use a a b box with my boss pedals can i still do it this way ?
Any chance you have a prime and can do a walk through on that like this...or give related info for prime connections vs pedalboard? You'd be a life saver...
@user-ch4md9fx4b I can see the back online. It really is the same ins and outs that I show in the video. The only difference is the layout has been flipped, and therefore looks different. Where do you have your volume levels at on pedal board. I'd rather control my volume with amp, but I've heard you should crank up the pedal board volume. Just curious as to where you had it?
Why not pluging your guitar in your amp and then your headrush pedal in your amp fx loop with 2 cables? Basically, this technoque allows you to put effects before the preamp right? So, if I use that technique, can I still usr my amp's built-in reverb and delay that I love? Im a little bit confused haha I'm new to the multi effects and modeling world...
Hey mate. Using 4 cable method allows you to put effects in your HeadRush both before and after the pre-amp, like you would with normal pedals such as overdrive in front, delays in the loop. Gives you way more flexibility. You can definitely still use your amps built in fx.
@@DaveWebbMusic yeah, just tried it.... it's awesome. I can use my physical amp's built-in delay that I love. I'm just confused about, main out line or amp and fx return level rack or stomp. I use a catalyst 200 and some settings cut my amp's volume about 1/2... In my living room, I never had my amp's master volume higher than 3 and it's super loud, but when i set on main out level to "amp" I have to crank up my amp's master volume to like at least 6 or 7 which usually would be loud enough to play a small venue, now it's just a comfy living room level cranked up that high. So, I'm very eased with the sound but I'm puzzled about the settings I should use.
Hello Friend, excellent video, I would like to ask you, why when I turn on the FX LOOP of my Marshall DSL 100HR, the sound level I get is very poor, it lowers and degrades a lot, and when I turn off the DSL FX loop it sounds good again ? isn't it supposed to be on all the time? thank you so much
In my limited experience with FX loops there is always a drop in volume. This happens with my TSL & my Tube Amp Expander. To an extent it also occurs in my digital amp modellers as well. You can compensate with extra volume. If it’s very noticeable I’d suggest leaving it on and turning the effects on & off as you need them. If the audio quality degrades and you don’t like it, then you’ll need to make a choice.
I get no signal in my Mesa looking amp when I turn on the effects loop inside the touch screen like you're supposed to do if you split it You know preamp effects and post preamp effects
Hi Dave! Just one quick question: when i’m using the 4 cables method the looper records what I’m playing but it doesn’t play anything out of the “real” amp; if I switch to amp and cab simulations… the looper works perfectly; is there any particular setting for use the looper while I’m using a real amp with the fx-loop/4 cable method? Thank you!
Wow this is a must do I really hated the headrush tone sounded way too dark and fake. mooer make a little 20w tube power amp like the orange pedal baby for anyone looking to go this route.
Hello, please help with fx loop Marshall jvm 410h and 4 cable delay methods, it doesn't work for me like you, it doesn't work for me at all except when Headrush is in front of the fx loop, I can't figure out how to do it correctly. thank you for your help, I'm from Slovakia, so I'm writing through a translator, thank you
Hi! I hope you have had some luck since your comment. If you’re following each step exactly, from my understanding it should work. It is very easy to plug into the wrong part. I didn’t get it first go and had to try again. Have another go, follow the video and take it slow. If Ymir doesn’t work, I’m sorry then I don’t know. Good luck!! 🤘🏼
@@DaveWebbMusic do you think the knob for FX MIX is making difference here? When it is turned off it looks like you only hear preamp from the amp and if you turn it on fully then the effects from the Headrush is there. How should we use the FX MIX effectively?
Hi I am using 4 cable method and have bought a few presets from choptones. I have the gigboard. When I add the fx loop pedal into the rigs I get this weird sound when I hit notes on the guitar. Is this because I am leaving the amp in the rig ?
Yep. In 4 cable method you’re running everything into a real amp, so you don’t want to have an amp or cab in your HeadRush, because it’s more or less like running an amp into a second amp. Either delete and save a new rig, or just turn them off in the preset.
So i did everything you said to and it still sounds nowhere near as good as my stomp pedals sound really digital like a transistor radio any ideas how to make my distortion sound more analog i use a metal zone pedal my JCM 800 100 watt i keep my drive at 6 and my volume at around 5 but the head rush distortion sound nothing like what i have now can i download the metal zone fir head rush any ldeas tired of throwing money away on a hopeless situation ?
Hey mate! Sorry to hear you’re having issues. Make sure you don’t have an amp or cab in your HeadRush chain. Because you don’t want either of those being run into another amp/cab. (Just covering all bases) I’ve found that some sounds don’t act the same as analogue pedals. Literally try them all and find one you like. Record a loop in your HR, keep it playing while you swap and tweak. Try adding an EQ before or after your Distortions/OD’s. Might help tighten things up. You can’t download any extras for HeadRush, they do the updates. Speaking of, make sure your unit is running the latest firmware. Delay and Reverb to me are to be used at a lot lower level than pedals. They’re too ‘wet’ for whatever reason. IMO In regards to your other question about using 2 amps. I’m not sure. I would suggest an A/B but I’d need to see it and play with it… Amps & Pedals vs Modeling is hard. End of the day I use modelers for convenience. I find the stuff I like the sound of most, and feel the best. They may be copies of real products, but in this case sounds like you should approach with that only as a guide. Cut back on the levels of things and see if that helps.
Thank you for your advice could I possibly run my metal zone with my head rush i seen a video where this guy was using pedals with the head rush just a thought ?
Oh yeah man, for sure. Pedals integrate really well with the HeadRush. You can put it either in the loop or run it before into the input. How are you using the Metal Zone with your JCM? Don’t hear many people doing it, I wanna have a go.
I followed your instructions on how to connect all the cables to and from my Headrush pedalboard to my Marshall however I am having an issue. Only the effects I put in front of the FX loop block work, all the effects I put behind it don't work. They are activated but don't work. is there a setting I have missed somewhere? ruclips.net/video/nllRaJL9ntA/видео.html
Hmm.. That’s annoying. - Check you have all the cables in the correct inputs/outputs… There we’re a couple of times I mucked up and sound was cut. - My amps FX loop needs to be physically turned on. Check yours doesn’t have one. - Check volumes on the HeadRush. - Check leads. - Check volumes on all effects etc. My guess is that you have a cable in the wrong order. Like I said, I did it, it’s easy enough to get wrong. Otherwise mate, I don’t know without having a look at it. Good luck!!
@@DaveWebbMusic what a sad day, my mx5 just arrive I did the fxloop connection, Mx5 left(mono) to fxloop return 6505mh, it's working for a few minutes then it saddenly died😔. Did I do wrong?
Oh no! Hopefully it’s nothing drastic. 4 Cable Method needs to like this.. 1. Left(mono) 1/4" output of HeadRush connects to the FX loop RETURN of amp. 2. FX loop SEND of HeadRush connects to front INPUT of amp. 3. FX loop RETURN of HeadRush connects to FX loop SEND of amp. 4. Guitar connects to the HeadRush Instrument IN. Plugging straight into the input, just make sure the amp and cabs are not in the rig. I hope it’s all ok!

I get no signal in my Mesa looking amp when I turn on the effects loop inside the touch screen like you're supposed to do if you split it You know preamp effects and post preamp effects
Here is one for you... connect using the 7 cable method... to two amps on your GT 1000 Core.
Oh geez! I don’t currently own 2 amps with FX loops, but if I ever get the chance I’ll be over it.
Thank you!
How interesting! Had no idea.
Try changing the ‘LOC’ mode. See if that helps.
I will need to rig it all up and have a play, off hand I don’t know.
@@DaveWebbMusic
Amazing thank you. So I switch off the amp and cab. Do I add the fx loop pedal still in the chain
Yes, you still need the FX loop block.
Just map exactly like I have in the video and you’ll be set.
P.s. please help i have shows coming up and my board is down really wanted to use the head rush this year
Hey mate!
Sorry to hear you’re having issues.
Make sure you don’t have an amp or cab in your HeadRush chain. Because you don’t want either of those being run into another amp/cab.
(Just covering all bases)
I’ve found that some sounds don’t act the same as analogue pedals.
IMO
In regards to your other question about using 2 amps. I’m not sure. I would suggest an A/B but I’d need to see it and play with it…
Amps & Pedals vs Modeling is hard.
Hello sir
When I try to use 4m My headrush don’t out rigout put and alternate output do you know why ?
Sounds like a cabling mistake…? It’s hard to know without actually seeing it.
@@DaveWebbMusic yes sir my cable was bad
Thank you sir for kindly reply me
You’re welcome. Glad you got it sorted. 🤘🏼
I followed your instructions on how to connect all the cables to and from my Headrush pedalboard to my Marshall however I am having an issue. Only the effects I put in front of the FX loop block work, all the effects I put behind it don't work. They are activated but don't work. is there a setting I have missed somewhere?

I have followed this method to the T BUT I LOSE ALL MY SOUND ?
Good luck!!
Not working for me.
So this setup won't apply to mx5
It should be exactly the same.
The MX5 still has a send/return, and and FX loop block. Follow the steps and away you go. 🤘🏼
@@DaveWebbMusic hell yeah thanks man, my mx5 coming this week I'm so excited
Awesome!
