I noticed you had the headrush main volume all the way down. When you start playing where do you usually have it at? Also, at what level do you put your f/x block at for your send. I’m asking because that’s three volume controls, there’s one more with output settings too. I tend to have my headrush main at like 8 and my f/x block is cranked up. But just wondering how you do it?
The Headrush master volume was all the way down to prevent any accidental noise while I was bent down in front of the Orange cabs. When playing at volume with the whole band I turn it all the way up. It's loud as hell lol. FX loop block is all the way up, output block/rig volume is at 0.0dB
Awesome , i do intend to use the 4CM with my amp when my Headrush MX5 unit arrives in the next few days or so. Super cool and damn envious of you to be opening for Dokken and my favourite guitarist Mr. Scary. A few quick questions if you got the time to get around to it :- 1.) Just wondering if there's a quick way to toggle the Tube Pre-amp on and off, like just using the Tube amp as a power amp. Is there a need to balance the Headrush volume to the Tube amp volume etc? 2.) Do you create and share any of your Headrush presets?
Question 2 and 3 first real quick. No there's no need to adjust the Headrush volume internally, just adjust the physical master volume knob to your needs and leave the "rig" and "to amp gain" volumes at 0dB. I have shared some presets, they can be found in each of my videos on specific amp models. I eventually intend to create a website with easy and quick access by category. For the first question the answer is technically no as far as turning the tube pre-amp off goes. However, you could design a rig so that there is an amp model AFTER the FX loop block in the HR, which would then send that amp model into the amp's power section. The drawback here might be volume balancing because I imagine introducing an amp model into the FX loop might also add considerable volume. I haven't tested this theory, but I would approach this carefully so you don't damage anything including your hearing.
Hey Alex, i`ve got two questions regarding the 4 Cable Method. Do you always set the position of the switch (RACK/STOMP) to "stomp" and how did you set your MASTER volume level? In one post someone recommended to set the main level always to max, while using the 4 cable method. Thx in advance and many greets from germany.
Always set it to stomp and your amp's FX loop accordingly. Your FX loop should be in whatever the higher dB setting on it is, not the padded down one. How this looks will depend on the amp model. I always start with the master on the HR at 0 and turn up until it sounds as I would expect it to depending on the amps volume setting. You'll have to play around with this probably. Plug your guitar straight in and get an ear for how loud it is, then return to 4cm and try to match it. Headrush states that unity gain is at about 6 on the master, but I like it around 9. Leave the FX loop block at default. Mix 100% and volume at +/- 0dB.
hey man! thank you for your Headrush content! Could you show how the headrush sound connected directly in your amp return loop? without the cab sim/IR disabled of course. Most of the videos on YT only show the headrush into the daw, but not with real sound. Thank you!!!
Thank you! Do you mean show how the amp models sound using my JCM 2000 as just a power amp? If so, I can definitely throw something together soon. It's actually my favorite way of playing live now. Going direct never felt right, 4CM is too much work, but FX loop return as just a power amp is perfect!
I noticed you don't use a cab in most of your rigs, is it because you prefer to use your real cab as output? Can you briefly explain the difference between with and without a cab in a 4CM? In your other videos I also noticed you don't insert the FX loop block when using delays, reverb, wet tones, can you briefly explain why? thank you!
Good questions. When using 4cm into a real amp you don't want a cab/IR because your real guitar cab is providing that aspect. I prefer a power amp/tube amp + guitar cab for my live sound with the band over going direct to PA. When going direct using cab sims or IRs you don't need the FX Loop block because all that does is tell the Headrush which fx to route to the physical fx loop on the Headrush. When going direct you can just put any effects you'd traditionally place in a loop behind the amp block and that is essentially the same as using a physical fx loop on a real amp. The FX Loop block serves no purpose when going direct.
@@alexmansman I really appreciate the help, you have the best info on RUclips about this beast..subbed. I just received my new Headrush pedalboard and trying to decide whether to use the 2CM or 4CM, and to understand the FX Loop on my amp to decide whether to use it or not. I have a Mesa dual rec amp and would like to use the FX Loop making the Headrush the pre-amp stage in the 4CM. After adjusting input/output gain staging on the Headrush, on the Mesa what settings should I use for the send and return mixes from 10 to 100% on each without over saturation/clipping? I've watched other guys on RUclips with a Mesa dual rec with the send/return mixes pegged at 100% on each does that sound right? According to Mesa dual rec manual the send/return mixes should be no more than 2 o'clock for both. Thank you for any advise you can give on the best way to setup my Mesa/Headrush combo with the FX loop.
@@Ray-zy1hp if you want the Headrush to be your pre-amp stage then you don't need 4cm at all. Just plug the Headrush's Left(mono) 1/4" output into only the "return" of your mesa's fx loop and the Headrush becomes your pre-amp just like that. 4cm method is for when you wanna use your Mesa's pre and power amp while the Headrush is used for effects only. Just set your levels to the desired volume. The Headrush's Master Volume becomes your amp's volume

Hi, I have just got the HeadRush mx5 and I want to use the 4 cable method and I want to use the mx5 just for effect as I have a real cabinet and amp I want to use but I only get a clean sound come through when I have it set up. I have the fx send in the mx5 going to the amp return and Fx return in the mx5 going into the amp send.Is there something I’m doing wrong and also do I need change anything on the mx5?.Thanks
You don't need to change any settings in the MX5 for 4CM, but your cabling is wrong. Read the description of the video, I left some basic instructions on how to connect a modeler in 4CM to an amp
I wish I could make my 4CM work with my 5150IIIS, it’s like my EFX loop block is not set correctly. Honestly, when I run through that amp this way, it seems as though my amp has NO balls. It just dies. I wish SOMEONE would actually show their EFX loop levels and their global settings in one of these vids.
The other guitar player in my band uses a Headrush through his 5150III as a power amp only and it absolutely kills. The FX loop block is just the default setting for me, no changes made. My global EQ is turned off. The amp/line switch should be set to "amp" and the stomp/rack switch to "stomp". Aside from those settings all I could suggest is verify all your cables are good. My "rig" and "to amp gain" volumes are both set to 0dB. Maybe it's not hooked up quite right? Try going 4CM with an FX loop block in there, but no other blocks at all and see what happens
I tried the fxloop(return) in my 6505mh to left(mono) mx5 headrush and a few minutes of playing my mx5 suddenly died, it won't boot. lights coming in to the footswitch but no display and sound
What’s your noise gate settings ! I had mine backwards I had delay and mod then fx loop that’s prob why it doesn’t sound right I’m running a mx 5 into a mesa mark v:25 thanks !
I can't recall off the top of my head and don't have the means to check at the moment, but I'm not too far off from the default settings. I do recall threshold is around 70db and the noise filter is fully on
Opening up for Dokken is more than just "Pretty Cool". That's awesome dude!
Haha hell yeah it's awesome! Just trying to keep things humble 😌
I usually play thru two FRFR112's but will try the 4 cable method thru my DSL100H full stack
Congrats on opening for Dokken, you just got lucky (not an insult, my favorite Dokken tune)
Thanks! I think this tops opening for Warrant earlier this year, but only because of the lack of Jani Lane!
Congrats dude! That’s an amazing gig to get! 💪🏽😎🏝 Thx for ur no-nonsense/real-world Headrush Pedalboard vids!
Thanks, Keoki! there's so little content about modelers in general geared towards live use that is what I try to focus on
