- Loretta Young was an extremely popular Hollywood film star in 1953 when television was beginning to sweep the nation. Taking a tremendous career risk, Miss Young decided to explore the new entertainment medium by extending her popular and diverse movie roles onto the 'small screen'.
The Loretta Young Show premiered on Sunday night, September 20, 1953 on the NBC television network where it was broadcast for the next eight years, in over 250 episodes, quickly becoming a ratings winner. The series was awarded eight Emmys as well as many other major acknowledgements.
Miss Young's signature show openings, the many and varied roles she played, the high production values and moral content of the series became the standard for the early days of classic TV in America.
Not all 266 Loretta Young Show episodes survived over the years. This collection, transferred from Miss Young's own private 16mm syndication prints, represents nearly every episode in which she appeared in the dramatic content of the episode.

Pure class and elegance. You don't really see that anymore with today's actresses.
You said it. Take care.
As a child, it was her entrances which I most remembered. Even then I would think; what a beautiful lady. And those images have never left my mind. Those gowns!!!
@kandorstevenson And she never wore the same one twice.
Loretta Young really knew how to make an entrance!
She sure made an entrance like nobody else!
I remember this entrance and her iconic theme song well. Even as a child in the 50-60’s, I found her genuine and appealing ❤️❤️❤️
Wow. Thank you for putting Loretta Young's grand entrances together. As a young child, I watched her show to see her in those beautiful ❤️ eloquent dresses as she did her twirl through the door.☺️😄
I remember the double door entrances from my childhood in the 50s. I just stumbled on Loretta Young and Cary Grant in "The Bishop's Wife". How have I missed this all these years? An underrated classic Christmas movie up there with "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Miracle on 34th Street".
How I miss those days...I was a child when this show was on TV and I loved it! I have never forgotten Loretta Young and the way she wore those magnificent dresses! I never wanted to miss it!
No one enters a room like Ms. Young. Thank you SO much for posting this.
A real star.
Her movie career dated back to the silent films, and she was still very beautiful on television in the 1980s.
Finally! There are the double doors that I remember!
This is how EVERYONE should enter a room!
I do… when I’m intoxicated.
Loved watching this show!
Her husband was the designer of her gowns. The same designer of Marilyn Monroe's nude studded dress that she wore when she sung happy birthday to Mr President and Rita Hayworth's black silk gown she wore in Gilda. All memorable outfits in history
Jean Louis designed her gowns… Not her husband.
@@Bailey2006a Eventually, Jean Louis was her husband until his death in 1997. I think that is what DestinyDiamond is referring to.
Ohhhh, she was so beautiful & her graceful entrances mesmerized me as a little girl. I used to open doors & "twirl" into a room so my dress wld flow like her's did!
I've even told my granddaughters about her & how beautifully graceful she was!
Thank you for compiling these video clips. Loretta Young really knew how to make an entrance. These clips bring back so many happy memories. 🙂 (Chase)
I was just talking to my big sister, (2024) she was telling me this story of the gracious and beautiful Ms. Loretta Young, my sister worked when she was young at the old Austin Municipal Airport restaurant..and one day my mom who also worked there told my sister, "go see if these people want anything" all my sister knew was there was this gorgeous woman and three men sitting in an area away from everyone else..( movie stars and other famous people always stopped off at this restaurant in-between flights) she remembers she had a beautiful turban on, and as she walked up to ask if she needed anything her head was down then she slowly raised her head to softly say.." no thank you" my sister to this day was in awe of her beauty and elegance..when she went back by our mom my mom said, " you know who that was?" sister said..no ..mom said "that was Loretta Young" my sister has never forgotten her brief but lucky chance in meeting with one of Hollywood's most famous artist ever.. rest in peace Ms. Young....and my beloved mama too❤️🙏🙏❤️
SHE KNEW HOW TO SAY HELLO ,
AND WAS ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR !!!!!!!
Elegance personified . BTW- she had a daughter out of wedlock . It was Clark Gable’s child which she “ adopted” and never revealed the truth to the public. That daughter , Judy Lewis, wrote a book about it .
Loretta Young was the
most beautiful movie star. And, always kept a fabulous figure! And, all of her sisters (3) were very beautiful too. One could never forget Loretta's face, she was so lovely!
Beautiful creations on an equally beautiful woman. Loretta had a lovely figure that certainly enhanced those dresses. Talk about graceful! I rented the first few seasons years ago and the episodes are well done and interesting in and of themselves.
Smashing collection of garments. Nobody like Loretta to show off those duds. Thanks for posting this.
Wish it had been in color!
Back in the day, this was commonly known as Loretta Young's "Twirl." I recall her saying (in an old article I came across) that many television viewers would tune in just to see the opening segment which had become so popular. Apparently, enough folks watched the entire show, and made it a ratings hit, since it ran for so many years.
LORETTA YOUNG'S entrance is a perfect example of class and beauty never goes out of style and is always a joy to see
Would be fun to see the gowns in color. She was stunning.
Fun to see the changes in hairstyle and skirt length and sets.
Beautiful
What a shame this show was not recorded in color. The gowns would come alive!
I remember in the summer my mom watching this show as she ironed clothes...mom in her housedress, hair in a wrap...nothing like Miss Loretta!
1:25 It is amazing that her wardrobe does not look outdated. I once read she was concerned the costumes she wore would look outdated in the future.
I'm reading, "All the Stars in the Heavens" by Triggiani and it is about Loretta Young and Clark Gable, mainly. I remembered those entrances, but forgot how elegant she was.
I recently Jeannine Basinger's THE STAR MACHINE, and it has caused me to re-evaluate Loretta Young, as a very shrewd business women and manager of her own career. When the movie roles weren't working out so well (after decades at the top), she moved into the new medium of TV (against everyone's advice at that date), mastered it, ran her own show, and presented herself in exactly the best way to gain a new loyal audience.
Wow!!
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for posting this Chris! I am going to work on the IGTV link because this would be a perfect opener!!!!!!!!! SOOOOOOOO FANTASTIC!
Liberace was so jealous I'm certain.
I never watched her show when it originally aired but my parents thought these “entrances” were ridiculous.
Almost hypnotic... Nice as they all are, it's always a bit of a disappointment when she enters and the fabric of her dress doesn't move.... :-)
Beauty, class, glamour and poise personified.Nigella Lawson is the only one to compare today.
You can see how Grace Kelly imitated her in the movie High Society.
she was like Vanna White- never wore the same gown twice
I remember at that time, the comedians had a field day.
hilarious that she didnt want these clips aired on reruns bc the dresses would be out of date with time
They have stood the test of time. Much like everything that Jackie Kennedy wore when she was First Lady. There's a beautiful large-format book that chronicles that era in fashion.
300 years of fashion
Loved the Dresses. As a young girl, preteen, I thought she was elegant as her full skirts swirled through the door with her. I hoped to show that much grace of movement when I grew up. Some say I did, others...?
I wish that LY would have had her daughter Judy Lewis come through that door with mom wearing the same dress !
As the years go by the doors look bigger and taller - and Loretta looks smaller and smaller. See: 3:47
Yes! I noticed that too :D
Which is the episode that LY plays Cleopatra??
I remember her from 1962. Maybe before that?
All the dresses up to 2:45 are great. Afterwards, not so much.
+dueroden I agree with you. The gracefulness in fashion began to wane in the 1960s.
Pretty. And pretty funny.
Who designed these beautiful gowns was it jean Louis
Probably, she married him later in life.
Yes
What a lovely elegant lady, and oh my! that waist.
My god, could that woman wear clothes!
I think the earlier fashions were much more elegant. As skirts got shorter something was lost.
You can tell she loves beautiful clothes??
I read a comment which said that LY was a terrible parent to Judy Lewis . Ms Lewis grew up to be a solid citizen who gave credit to her mother depite of the covering up her birth information . LV loved that child , kept her with her and provided her in plush Hollywood surroundings and a Catholic school education .
It's a shame cocktal hats went out of style in the Mamie Eisenhower years.
Hello
Hello
removed me from flop era
She had a child with Clark Gable. Put her in an orphanage for 19 months then “adopted” her. She never told her daughter that she was her biological mother. Her daughters HUSBAND told her. . It was a mess. Loretta was a beautiful woman, but a terrible, terrible parent.
I was a small boy in the late 50's and 60's when my mother used to have me watch this show, and this is how American women were then, decent, graceful and always 'on' without cursing and clowning. Post WWII dads came home to these angels after busting their asses for 8-12 hours, for the family. No feminism delusion to put up with.
Yeah, and no Black Lives Matter either, fool.
so you think women should be pretty ornaments, rather than full-fledged human beings who get equal pay for equal work and are treated equally in the eyes of the law. Because THAT'S what feminism is!!! You obviously know nothing about the subject!
Michael, nonsense. You are falling for lies. Loretta Young had an affair with Clark Gable and had a child.
Elegance is dead. Don’t expect millennials to bring it back.
I feel like I just watched a recap of RuPaul's Drag Race.
