  • In this episode of 'In The Pits' we chat with Larry Kavanagh to chat about the Torana, affectionately known as "Saggy Sarah".
With a long and storied history in motorsport, piecing together this car, and paying respect to its history has been a massive labour of love by Larry and the car presented today is of great credit to him.

What an incredible restoration and acknowledgement of the history of such a cool car.
What's your favourite part of Saggy Sarah? We think it's got to be the attention to detail and deliberate leaving of parts of the car that tell the story of its' life.

@@Lightsout89 very difficult to put a price on this. When you combine the history, the drivers, the fact it was the lost missing key to HDT. The fact is has repairs that are traceable to moments in time... it's ability to shape shift...... and the way it was restored.
If this was on pawn stars it would be the "HOLY GRAIL" of holden.
And those lines. Would love to see it in a good spray.

    SARAH SURVIVES. TRULY AMAZING!
A rinky dink museum of living and breathing HDT Harry & Ian technological art work and mind boggling, hugely successful motor sport history all crammed into one slinky little package and still trundling along under her own power.
Seeing this car intact feels like finding a pirates chest in your back yard when all you wanted to do was dig a sand pit for your kids. You look inside & all the wonderful treasure is still packed within. A wonderful little miracle...
It just makes you feel giving someone a hug and jumping for joy.

Ridden in Saggy as a rally car when our family friend, Bob Bird owned it.
Bob was doing well in Victorian Rally Championship rounds at the time in his Mk1 Cortina, and Harry firth offered it to him, was $5000 in the day, and came with more than another 2 car's worth of spares as Firth was cleaning out all the XU1 stuff for the L34 era. The car was dark green when Bob got it, and under street lights at night, you could see the "HDT" where it had been painted over on the rear guards :-)
I think the "over the jump" photo he refers to at 8:45 , might actually be a well known photo of Bob nosediving after a jump?

Saggy Sarah... Sounds like the monica for a retired Madam. Well she's seen a few Aussie race car drivers through her time and by the sounds of it each have had their way with her in their own unique way, right down to bending the fender for the crooked headlight effect. The many layers of paint represent the styles and fashion she's lived and seen. I think you can see the picture I'm painting here. To bad about that "Holden it together" diff being hurt.
A bit like us when we need a hip replacement.
Well Saggy Sarah is a real surviver in the hands of someone who respects her now and is going to treat her with the dignity she's longed for.
Keep the tyres pumped and engine warm. 👍😀

It kind of reminds me of granddads hammer, has had 5 handles and 3 heads but totally reversing the concept. I think a great deal of respect and honour has been shown to the vehicle.
After the weight of multiple paint layers was removed, was it quicker? 😉

    • @BlendLineTV
      @BlendLineTV  2 года назад

It is a bit like that, but every owner/driver puts their own mark on the vehicle.
Not sure how much quicker it was, I assume there was a fair bit of weight lost though which removed some stress on the panels!

Just the number it ran when Bruce Watt had the car with this paint scheme back in the day. This car was labelled "Watty's car" by Harry Firth himself despite Jansen's moniker for her. So it was important to preserve Bruce Watt's identity within the old girl. Maybe Watty had a sense of humour or just liked the number??
