@@deliciouslifetv7362 the Holden Torana never came out with a Chev engine. The SS came out in either the 253 V8 or the 308 V8. The SLR5000 which is a 4 door came out with the 308 V8 only. There were 4 and 6 cylinder versions as well. Check them out on RUclips as they are a iconic Australian car. People put Chev motors in them but it's a sin if you ask me.
Originally 308cu, Holden 4bbl in order to make Homologation for Racing at Bathhurst. The 253 wasn't used in n the SS. Holden since it,s inception was aligned with Pontiac and Oldsmobile, they have the same in common with the Pontiac V8s. Only main difference they were made with starter on the left of the block to make it easier for Right hand Drive. The Brock05 number plate, probably an homage to the late Sir Peter Brock who campaigned in the HSV and HDT Toranas with his #05 always on his car. Looks to be a nice example in the slime green. Chevys were only used in Holden's for Racing purposes from 1968 in the Monaro 327. For Racing. 350 in 1969, 1970, 71, to stay competitive against the 351 ford's and 340 Chryslers. The only other Chev that was used was the 307 used in the Holden Brougham. Early forrunner to the. Statesman. The 253/ 4.3l usually left the factory as a 2 bbl offering. Back in the seventies there was all manner of aftermarket goodies available, for Holden's. So any 253s would have only been aftermarket motors that found their way into Toranas.

G'day from Australia! :) I hear you say it has a small block Chev in it, and was wondering has it been re-engined there in the states because the Australian Torana A9X came with an Australian built 308 cu inch.
this car is an Aussie icon its a Holden A9X , basically a car built specifically to race at Bathurst , they had to sell 5 , 000 cars to be able to race , but not all of those 5 , 000 cars were A9X 's ! The A9X , had better suspension , bigger & better brakes , it was just a perfect car for Bathurst & Brocky proved that by winning by 6 laps , & did a lap record on the last of 163 laps !
Absolutely lovely Torana SS and worth huge dollars now. Just echoing some comments here though - the bonnet scoop was bolted on ex-factory rather than moulded into the bonnet. They came out with a 4.2 litre 253 cubic inch or 5.0 litre 308 cubic inch V8 not a Chev. The manuals were a factory 4 speed. And the bonnet blackout usually ran along the doors to the hatch (A9X). Hotwire wheels were a popular option. That's a great example he's got there. The americans must freak out seeing and hearing this cruise by. Great video mate.

One of the best Aussie muscle cars, considerably valuable too, worth onwards of 200K USD It is a Torana SS Hatchback or better known as a coupe. Very sought after aussie muscle car, lightweight and won many car races. Brock05 number plate represents PETER BROCK he is a famous Aussie car racing legend, he raced them and many other holdens, unfortunately he crashed a car during a race in 2006, he was a legend. 05 represents his racing team number! Long live Brocky!
Brocky was no doubt a dead-set, fair-dinkum, dinky-di, true-blue, you-beaut Aussie racing legend, but he went a bit off the rails after he retired, had a big spat with Holden & was divorced from Bev, endorsing of all things, Lada Samaras from Russia (?!) & something called a Polariser, which was supposed to prevent rust & I think also to cause the petrol molecules to be "aligned" to supposedly increase fuel economy & power. He went broke & died some years later driving head-on into a tree in the Targa West tarmac rally in the hills east of Perth. A sad end to a great racing career. Strangely enough, America had a great racing legend named Pete Brock.
Like in USA , Australia had its own Peter Brock race car hero . I saw him race at Queensland international race track in a Marlboro red and white delivery. This Iconic car took Ford out of the contest ❤️🇦🇺
You know when Brocky raced this model at Bathurst- he finished 6 laps ahead of 2nd place AND broke the lap record on the last lap of the 161 lap race! THAT'S how dominant these things were, the SLR 5000 A9X package was the baddest mf on the block 💪
Beautiful I'm from Australia so nice to see the Torana in the USA the price tag on that thing now here in Oz is incredible. Holden don't make cars in Australia anymore. Very nice car mate 👍👍👍
This one may have a small block chev but in Australia, the v8 was an Australian designed V8 with 2 size options, a 253ci (4.2ltr) or a 308ci (5.0ltr), often known as a thong slapper for their distinctive sound. There are similaritieswith chev design but they sound and perform differently through both torque and power ranges.
But, very low performace, and dodgy handling by todays standards. I drove a mates SLR5000 and was amazed by the understeer caused by having an iron v8 in a car designed to be a 4 cylinder.
@@nordic5490 blame a bloke called George Roberts. An American posted to GM Holden, he believed that family cars that understeered were inherently safer. He ruined the HQ also. Only with RTS did the Holden’s finally gain decent handling (for US watchers, unlike over there, the Aussie engineers actually changed the suspension significantly to make use of new tyre tech. It wasn’t just a badge and marketing)

The Holden 308 ci V8 is the only GM V8 with the right hand cylinder bank forward , reflecting our right hand drive . The 308 and 253 ci V8 share much of the GM Oldsmobile V8 design, same port layout only Oldsmobile and Holden have, same uprite 6 deg valve angles only holden and Oldsmobile have , same alloy valve rocker bridges , same starter location , same intake manifold style and carbie , the only chev design on the holden is bore spacing and later V8s had chev bellhousing. The holden oiling system is Cadillac V8 .

This was GM's answer to the mighty fast Ford Falcon Cobra that won 1st & 2nd in 1977. Because of the A9X Torana light weight body, they won Bathurst in 1978 & '79.
Shouldn't have a chev if original and came with a M21 4 speed gearbox also. Hood scoop is wrong as came with a A9X Torana one, was bolted on standard dimensions should be 880mmx520mmx100mm These are also similar to the American Monza but better front and rear panels. 4door LX Torana is the same except not a coupe also comes as A9X like a hatch.. UC Torana hatch is similar. same floor pan as A9X but uglier front and rear panels
Chev V8 small block inspired but you won't find a Chev engine like it in the USA. It is a 308 cubic inch mill developed in Australia and made at the Fishermans Bend plant. GMH decided to promote the Torana as its performance tin-top racing platform to go up against the Ford Falcon GT. The Ford was a much bigger car with a 351 cube mill. The strategy behind the Torana was that a smaller, lighter vehicle with the right power-to-weight ratio could beat a bigger more powerful car because it had less weight to push and pull up and corner with plus less drag and better fuel consumption with the smaller engine. The first racing Torana's had inline six-cylinder engines and while successful struggled on the long straights or uphill climbs and our most famous track had both of those. The third-generation racing Torana would therefore be a V8 and a very successful one but the Ford Falcon 351 still managed to rain on their parade every so often.
@@deliciouslifetv7362 Yeah mate I think they were Aussie designed and back in the day there was no internet so I doubt anyone knew what was available across the planet like these days :)
Used to own one of these, the rear end was so light every time you put the foot down it would start to snake. Didn't stop the diff (banjo) from popping though they had a pathetic drive system that needed a complete overhaul, usually a ford 9 inch cut down and unless you customized the the wheel tub you couldn't put a wide a tyre on them without them bottoming out and risk hitting the flare. The UC that came after the LX had a bigger diff (Salisbury) but wasn't compatible and a waste considering they only came out with a small straight six.
Nice job mate the Torana has legendary status like Camaro and mustang and mopar in the States This cars main rival was a Ford GT coup like the one Mad Max drove.

Beutiful Torry. Shame it has a Chev V8 and a 5 speed box? Should have a Holden 308 in it. Also depends if it is an original A9X, although seat upholstery doesn't look right, meant to be hounds tooth from memory, unless it is just a copy/tribute?
Bonnet scoop not quit right, an the hotwire wheels were a popular in the day look. They still look good today. The SS coulda had any engine in it. They actually came with a 6cyl an 2 V8 options, 4.2 an 5.0L.
Peter Brock raced a 1978 Holden Torana A9X hatch at Bathurst 5000 race, and won by 5 laps, that SS will be a 5ltr, 308 ci v8 with a Aussie 4 speed, and Salisbury differential. Collectable car.
A friend of mine sold his A9X recently that he bought new as a teenager!. He wont say how much he got ,but he said it was $100,000 less than what he was asking. In the USA there isn't much value on holdens but Falcon XA-XC coupes fetch good money.
If that has the factory motor then it's NOT a SBC but the Holden 308ci which was an indigenous design (and didn't even have the same firing pattern as the Chevy).
Bruh power to weight ratio built for racing around a track not a oval track but a real race track like bathurst. Good luck on keeping up with a holden torana period down under guy!
LX Torana hatchback. 308ci. Never came with 5 speed, There is a variant racish version, A9X. Disc brake rear. Had next model UC rear floor plan. Torana’s are awesome, 6 cyl early or V8 winning Bathurst 1000km/620mile race. 2nd place 6 laps behind. Set the fastest lap on last to prove a point. Peter Brock, not the designer of the Daytona sports coupe. Aussie.
We used to make cars in Australia, but we couldn't adapt to the changing market and our input costs were to high compared to Asian countries. Our government stopped supporting the industry and it was shut down a few years ago. So now we have cheap chinese suv's and utes everywhere.
Hmm, I remember these being driven around. A very light weight small car with a 302 CI (5 Litre) They used to win races, mostly due to judicious driving and low weight. That is the other way of improving your power to weight ratio.

I just wish i had more about the car .. i just spotted this car at my local SoCal cars and coffee

Beautiful good old Torana 👍🏼 Thanks for sharing…
this car is an Aussie icon
its a Holden A9X , basically a car built specifically to race at Bathurst , they had to sell 5 , 000 cars to be able to race , but not all of those 5 , 000 cars were A9X 's !

One of the best Aussie muscle cars, considerably valuable too, worth onwards of 200K USD
It is a Torana SS Hatchback or better known as a coupe.
Thank you for stopping by my friend glad you enjoyed the content.. 😎👍🏾🇵🇭🇺🇸
These cars were originally powered by a 253 and 308 HOLDEN V8. They only ever had a 4 speed box, M20 if my memory is correct.
You could not get a SS 253 only 308 and 202 six.
@@nordic5490 70's Aussie cars all understeered- on purpose. But it's all tuneable if you don't like ploughing understeer.
LOL. Thong slapper won't mean anything to the Americans. They'll have all manner of imaginations about that.
@@jonathanrabbitt That's why I made the reference. Aussies will get it straight away....... and yes you're right, most Americans will have their imaginations going riot. 😂😂😂
The Torana was powered by a small 308 v8 in the ozzy cars though some put in the Chevy 307 which wasn't factory it was a good short sprinter I owned one ....They were a good combination of power to weight which made them a great track car
Its a Holden V8 probably a 308CU. In Australian Dollars if its an original SS A9X its worth big money. $500,000 plus Aussie Dollars. Note it dosnt have a radio which is how the special built A9X versions came out.

The SS tag is not the Gestapo (Don’t mention the war). It stood for Sports Saloon
That’s good to know … thanks for stopping by 😎👍🏾🇵🇭🇺🇸

Used to own one of these, the rear end was so light every time you put the foot down it would start to snake. Didn't stop the diff (banjo) from popping though they had a pathetic drive system that needed a complete overhaul, usually a ford 9 inch cut down and unless you customized the the wheel tub you couldn't put a wide a tyre on them without them bottoming out and risk hitting the flare. The UC that came after the LX had a bigger diff (Salisbury) but wasn't compatible and a waste considering they only came out with a small straight six.
