Australia is the most competitive car market in the world. There are many car brands in Australia. The Japanese manufacturers ruled the Australian market, because they make right-hand drive vehicles. But now the Chinese will take over with their electric vehicles.
No they won't Japan has a really good reputation they will continue to dominate in Australia. China has a terrible reputation I'll be surprised if they sell many cars
What a lovely video, your energy is great. So glad to see your enthusiasm. I’ve been lucky enough to own an XR6 Turbo Ute and one of the last XR8 sedans with the supercharged coyote V8. All of the Americans that I have shown those cars lamented that they were never available over there.
Gotta love the FGX Falcons! I own a 2015 XR8 and it’s an awesome car. Bought mine 2nd hand in 2018 for 45K and a guy near me who wants to buy it from me offered me 80K about a month ago, it’s wild 😂

Fascinating observations, and flips the 'America had all the best cars' concept I have always subconsciously nurtured from childhood. Most informative.
Im Aussie and watching this made me happy :) So were so close to getting the the Ute thing right. basically here if it has a tray it's a UTE. We only call truck what US calls semis or big rig. What you call a pickup truck we also would still call a ute here. Loved the video
I love the Australian ford falcon xr6. I think America really missed the opportunity on thoughs cars. 4 door reliable sports sedan that has a inline 6 that will smoke any V8 on the road
Oh yeah, if I had made a longer video I would have mentioned 2 more things! 1: Aussies kept the muscle car thing going long after the USA had given up on them and 2: Aussies enjoy 6 cylinder muscle cars, whereas Americans only like V8s.
@@WastelandFirebird Europe makes 4.0l V8 so a 4.0L inline 6 is basically simular size that's a big 6. Nissan skyline inline 6 are rather small in comparison But make a lot of horsepower with all the oversized cams and turbo. @@WastelandFirebird I think that is due to the fact fuel has been relatively cheaper in the USA so the market was more accepting of 6 cylinder cars in Oz.
Most of the cars you showed are what I'd call 'regular' cars. Nothing special about them and cars like that can be found all over the world in one form or another. What irks a lot of Australians is that we don't get American pick-ups, vans, or muscle cars because none are made in RHD except the Mustang. Can't buy a Camaro, Demon, Hellcat, F-250, Econoline (when they were making them) etc. unless you want to spend another $40,000 to have it converted. You can modify your car to the limit. Go to a custom car show and see what's there.
I think maybe you can modify older cars more freely than newer ones? Then again the USA is the same way in that a lot of things are technically illegal (like putting a turbo on a non-turbo car, I think, violates federal environmental regulations) but people get away with doing it all the time.
@@keyboardemperor3540 I've seen several where I live too and an uncle of mine had the first in Australia back in 1968 but like everyone since then, he had to pay a ton of money to have it converted to RHD.

What you were saying about the land cruisers is true. They’re very popular over here and are one of the most reliable cars that I’ve driven, ever. My dad was obsessed with them too. We had a 60’s series, an 80’s series and a 90’s prado. The 60’s series (yes, it was made in the mid 1960’s!) Would have still been going to this day if we hadn’t had to sell it when we moved across the country. All of those cars had probably been 3 - 4th hand when we bought them, but they never broke down. The 60’s series was literally rusting through in some places and it would have fallen apart before the engine carked it I reckon!
You gotta visit during summernats, nothing quite like it, im across the ditch and have been wanting to go all my life, definitely #1 on my bucketlist for sure❤️💯
As someone who's lived in Sydney their entire life as is really used to the...I suppose you could say ecosystem of cars around here and what they look like, I find it fascinating that the cars I'm so used to are rare or non-existent in another part of the world! Your enthusiasm is infectious, mate. Also I'm not a huge fan of blocky cars, but the Jimny looks quite nice in that colour!
They will crush your car for repeated street racing and "hooning" but not for general speeding they hold you up by the ankles until all your money falls out of your pockets.
Sköda's have traditionally come from Czechoslavakia / Czech Republic, but were acquired by Volkswagen Automotive Group and now are built in and around Europe, various components in various factories... Same Audi/VW/Sköda/Seat
When you can, get to Narrandera for the Summernats or one of the custom cars shows. There you will see old cars lovingly restored plus hot rods, street rods etc. I had a similar experience when going to the States in 99, I couldn't believe how low all the cars were. A lot of Aussie cars are built slightly higher off the ground because of the rougher and more unmade roads we have. Also if you come down to Melbourne, sit in peak hour on one of the major roads and count the Porsches, Lambo's, Lotus, Peugeot, etc cars you see in inner Melbourne.
Americans always say "there are so many utes in Australia!" but the USA has lots and lots of pickup trucks too. What we're actually surprised at is that there are so many things that look like the old Chevy El Camino or Ford Ranchero! They don't sell a single thing like that in the USA now. Sadly I don't think they're selling any new ones in Australia either, but at least there are still lots of cool used ones you can get.
@@WastelandFirebird yeah everyone loved the utes but with locally produced cars in Australia ending a few years ago with Holden and Ford they kind of died out. The Holden Ute you were looking at , yes , we would call that a UTE . The Toyota with the Silver , Drop-side Tray can get referred to as a " One-Tonner " . And something like a Big Chev C-20 or Ford F-150 we may well call an " American Pickup " . And I think the OTHER big Toyota you were thinking of , while looking at the Prado , would be a 70 Series Landcruiser . Big and Square Farm Truck .
@@dantemadden1533 . I did NOT say , anywhere , that they could NOT be called a " Ute " . However SOME People will use the terms I mentioned to be more descriptive to whomever they are addressing .
Now that the car companies no longer make car based utilities anymore they started calling pick up trucks utes hoping that people wanting ute qualities would be sucked in buying rough riding pickups by calling them utes. Worked well with lots of clowns defending the names of ute replacements.
really intresting to see we get more exclusive cars than i thought. Fun fact tho, the Toyota Echo is literally the same as a Yaris, they were just called different things in different markets until they eventually consolidated everything to Yaris
3:58 yes! As an Aussie I did exactly the same thing in Europe, but in reverse obviously! Also, on multiple occasions, I would turn the wrong way cos the GPS said turn left (or keep left) and I'd take the exit and turn right. This was particularly annoying on Autobahns cos sometimes the exit would be to a different freeway and it might be 20km before I could turn around! I prob did this a dozen times over a 3 month trip if I wasn't concentrating properly.
Great vid, love how you get excited over everyday cars which we Australians take for granted. What would be great is to see you cruising in a few aussie muscle cars. If you ever make it to Brisbane let me know. My friend runs the RUclips channel Oz Torque, I'm sure he would do a colab and take you for a spin in his Commodore VL Turbo.
We get after market trays on our utes so that the sides on the base car don’t get in the way of putting tools and what have you in the back. If you really wanted the tray can be completely flat, you also don’t have to worry about anything scratching the paint. Tradesmen and farmers dream.
2:58 that is an Australian made car from 1971. Australia made its own falcons from 1960 to 2016 because the American made falcons fell to bits on our rough roads. That purple car is a GTHO phase 3. It can handle some of the roughest roads in America and can reach 160mph.
Deadset my falcon still falls apart on our roads I've spent more money on it then any car I've owned. biggest regret of my life can't wait to get rid of it and go back to my hilux
Holden/Ford/Chrysler used to build panel vans. These were a car front end, like the ute, but with a van rear. As teens we used to turn them into custom vans known as 'shaggin' wagons'. You'll mainly see then at car shows these days due to their age.
I love those things!! I want a purple Sandman!! In the US we had the "van" craze too but we had those big tall vans, not the station-wagon type things you had here.
Appreciate your perspective and enthusiasm here. Have you visited Japan before? As an Australian it tripped me out because I realised everything I grew up with car wise was foreign (from Japan), but none of the car models I was familiar with are sold to the domestic Japanese market. None of the Japanese brand cars in Australia are driven in Japan (They're made for export only, just like Fosters beer). The Japanese in Japan if they do buy a car, it's a really boxy and tall car like the "Cube". Their needs are different from our own, they travel short distances at slow speed, so headroom and storage is prioritised over speed and aerodynamics. Cars are for groceries or Sunday trips mostly over there, never for commuting, because public transport is so attractive, its faster, regular, efficient and cheaper to travel by. Oh and all the Taxis are black Crown vics with white doily interior and white glove drivers, It's like a perfectly preserved 80s time bubble.
And what you say is perfectly true, even the models like say Toyota Corolla are a bit different as I own one here in Australia or models look similar but different names. I just had 6 weeks in Japan and took great notice of car types and most Japanese Hatch and SUV types are all Hybrids, a few diesels and I also seen a few Jeeps, a Huge GMC pick-up and one of those 70's style American Utes, which looked ridiculously large in a Japanese shopping centre car park. The little Boxy cars commonly known as Kei Cars are generally under 1,000 cc, mostly around 660cc 3 cylinder cars and under 1,000kgs in weight, they are much much cheaper in rego and tax charges and commonly get around 27kms to a litre or just over 100kms (60 miles) to a US Gallon and inside they are deceptionally spacious.
Haha this is so awesome. Love it. Love your enthusiasm and general love for automotive history. As an Aussie if I went to America I’d be so excited seeing all the USA cars we don’t get over here. 😃
Of course you can modify cars here ! You should go to a custom car show, Australia is full of highly modified cars, but just like the US, they are now worth a small fortune, so you generally only see them at shows or organised runs. I have both modified cars and motorcycles... Look for video's on the "Summernats" at Canberra for a look at some modified Aussie cars...
I've been to a couple shows like that. Can you drive those cars on the street? Do they have to be a certain age to avoid having to be engineered and emissions-approved and safety-approved and all that? I know the people who modify their modern cars are constantly complaining about being defected by police.
@@WastelandFirebird There are rules and regs for say, putting a late fuel injected engine into an older car, some regs / emission's controls must go with the date of manufacture of the engine, some with the manufacturer date of the car, it also depends on which state you live in, All states have different rules. It can all be a bit confusing. Yes you can drive them on the road if engineered properly... Lots of people do mods without getting them approved and get defected..

Some "Ute" also have Cab Chasis with a matching "Tub". Both look almost identicle but the Cab Chasis has a gap between the cab and tray.

Love the vid. I moved from LA to Sydney in 2001 and driving here is very different to driving in the US. The government here in Aus look at cars in a different light than most of the world. Here, if you own a car you are a means of revenue generating for the local councils. If you love cars and want to mod them you are labelled a Hoon by the police. Aus turned me off driving.

Australia is the most competitive car market in the world.
There are many car brands in Australia.
The Japanese manufacturers ruled the Australian market, because they make right-hand drive vehicles.
But now the Chinese will take over with their electric vehicles.
It wasn’t very competitive until government decided to sign really bad free trade agreements with South Korea, China, France and Japan
No they won't Japan has a really good reputation they will continue to dominate in Australia. China has a terrible reputation I'll be surprised if they sell many cars

So I guess a 4.0L inline 6 Barra would be more likely up with the standard V8 range on stock but serous horsepower worked.
I've seen at least 3 Camaros in Melbourne

The Summernats are in Canberra.

I do hope to visit Japan someday, and I fully expect to have my mind blown.
The cars don’t get crushed but your heart will be when you see how much they fine you for going like 5kph over the limit
Haha this is so awesome. Love it. Love your enthusiasm and general love for automotive history. As an Aussie if I went to America I’d be so excited seeing all the USA cars we don’t get over here. 😃
Australia is the perfect car market. Japanese, Korean, European, JDM, american-like cars (V6, V8 Holdens, Ford falcon). I envy their car market
Lots of people do mods without getting them approved and get defected..
the fold-down side tray thing you get on the tradie utes comes like that AFAIK.

You can modify cars here, but they need to be engineered. Generally if you're nice to police and your car isn't stupidly low or loud they don't really care. Insurance won't pay out however.

G'day, The Ute is evolving It now includes practically any vehicle that has a tray. The True Blue Ute, has a Sadan version available and the tray portion is part of the cabin of the vehicle. A "Cab Chasis" has a Tray portion that could be removed and replaced with one of a different style. I.E. remove a "Tub" and fit a "Drop Side" or "Flat deck" style.
