The Peter Fowler build Mercedes 450 SLC Sports Sedans is one of the pinnacle race cars in Australian motorsport history. Built as a dedicated space frame race car with big V8 the car was initially built with the desire of getting the local community of Shepparton Victoria and corporate partners to support motorsport.
Raced initially by John Bowe, the car suffered development and teething issues before driving duties were taken over by Brad Jones. Fresh out of Formula Ford at the time!
Following this period the car was purchased by Bryan Thomson, who took his and the cars first national title in 1985, winning the Australian GT Championship.
Now owned by Simon Pfitzner, the car has been returned to it's glory days in Australian Sports Sedans and takes to the track regularly as part of the Historic Sports Sedans series.
One of the most iconic cars of Australian Sports Sedans! Imagine it going toe to toe with the WEC Porsches at Sandown :O
Do you have a standout memory from this car on track?
Not 100% sure but I think it blew up at Calder when I was there one year. But LOVE this car.

A car of many incarnations. Started as a Sports Sedan with the Fowler twin cam heads, then went twin turbo for a while and broke quite a few engines. Then it became a GT car with some success. When that inevitably fell over it went back to being a Sports Sedan.
Last I saw off it in Thommos hands was the 94 'Thundersports' race at the 94 AGP supports. 10 lapper and hot & drizzly. I was in a group of cars with Bryan, Bob Jolly, Des Wall [Thommo wanted to beat the newer car that he had built from the Jane Monza]
I have a feeling it broke the gearbox there and am unsure wether it finished. We had a couple of other cars try to play but they kept falling off. Dave Attard in the Alcair Commodore did it twice! Second time was a hard hit. As did I on the last lap with a spin in the increasing rain on slicks where I lost a spot to Bob Jolly. I finished 6th. I do know that the car then sat on a hoist for quite a period until it found a new home and from there went to NZ.
As a n/a car as it is now it never had close to 1100hp. Even Simons 700 may be optimistic. Simons dad Bernie Pfitzner was part of a group building the Develco chassis for Sports Sedans that included Clems Charger [also owned by Simon] the McCormack Charger, and Jag, Peter Finchs Monaro [where is that?] and Tony Ross's 48 Holden [which Simon also owns] Simon runs PPG gearboxes that sells world wide.
That's some great history LDN! Thanks for sharing it. Love hearing more about the days when these beasts were raced in anger!
This car is the reason why I, as a teenager, really loved motorsport. Infact this car was on the cover of Auto Action which I then bought for for years and years.
Nice seeing it dicing with the Barry Bray Stanza, wonder how many races they have sparred in over the years
That's awesome. We've loved the car from afar for many years, so to be able to see it in the flesh was a dream!
I remember when this car was built it was a stunning sports sedan back then ,by the looks of it it still is and it really did have quite a few engine combinations. By memory the turbo set up was the most troublesome but you couldn't go past a Goodwrench motor sport block with brownfield head's and McGee fuel injection music to the ears. Great program guys.
huge memories indeed even for this young chap
So many great old sports sedan/GT cars out there still. As a kid I liked the Merc, also the Bob Jane Monza, and Rusty French's Porsche 935.
Saw this car at Calder and Winton when I was a kid. Was my favourite sports sedan of all.
Watched this car live 2 weeks ago at Mallala and it's awesome.
How good is historic Mallala at an event. We absolutely loved it!
Brian Thompson used to race this car back in the early 80s.
I used to race Vees at that time and I remember Brian blowing turbos and generally having a number of reliability issues.
It was a monster.
Still have many photo's of those days and the cars.
another great one was Tony Edmondson's Alfetta
Remember seeing it at Sandown when it was out with things like the Porsches. The car is an absolute weapon.
Nothing beats these era sports sedans they are the absolute best 😍😍👍👍
wish you guys put the laps times at mallala up,
This channel still wont disappoint, everytime still banging on with brute speed force! 🤘
Cheers Roderick! We're so glad to hear you're enjoying the content! We're loving putting it together and getting it out there for the fans.
Bloody love this car was always one of my favourites and always wondered where she finished up. So glad it's still running
Now this is something I can get behind!
Very cool car! It's unique and I bet it's a blast to drive! Thank you for making this video! Very interesting to hear the history!
I would 1000% watch these races if they were on BLTV
Brilliant. I can remember this car from years ago 👍
It's such an awesome piece of Australian history and we're so indebted to people like Simon who keep it on track.
Early 2000's Geoff Munday drove it in the Vic State Series before it went to NZ if memory serves me correctly
Cockpit-mounted engine...how do they control/endure the heat in there?
worked out at racers rest with peter fowler, the quad valve was ahead of its time then. i can remember reducing the port size to get more torque .
Plenty of ponies there bro, awesome car, I love old sports sedans too 👍
My favourite car ever.
Looking forward to seeing this car (and all the others competing) at Winton festival of speed.🙂👍
And how cool are the "Mexican Hat"3 pc rims
What a Monster 👹
my god those wheels are off tap ,outstanding
Cracker video guys, can’t wait to see the whole wrap up💪
What an awesome shape ❤️
Motorsport as it’s Best for real Man
Very nice car.
Much prefer to watch these cars than any formula 1. Wish they would ban paddle shifting in racing. I have all the photo's of this Merc from back in its racing days.
It's brilliant racing that's true.
Though, Sports Sedans are now allowed paddle shift as well.
What a beast💪🏽👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👌🏽🇬🇧😎
Now I can’t unsee that the helmet hook is a loose fit on the roof diagonal.
What an absolute bruiser of a car!!
It sure is, and a credit to Simon that he's keeping it on track!
Great to see it back on the track and getting plenty of looks but a Chev engine? A Mercedes AMG engine would be real and much more appropriate.
F’in weapon!
What kind of book is shown here in the video?
It's the Australian Motorsport yearbook for 84/85.
A lot of that on track footage is from 2022,, some of those cars were not there in 23.
Yes, this video was filmed at the 2022 event.
Help me out here gents, it’s called a sports sedan, but it’s a coupe. Can someone enlighten me? Is it just because that’s what the series was called when we were kids?
Stanza coupe more interesting. Or Clems charger.
There's stories on those cars here from last year's Mallala. ruclips.net/video/hRTnh-4io_E/видео.html
you know . . .
Is Phill Ward's HQ Monaro still around what about the HDT Torana Collin Bond use to drive Tony Edmonton Alfa pictures are available

Claiming 1,100 horsepower... really?!
The guy clearly says 700 in the interview 🤦
The 1100hp was in it's twin turbo days.
