The ending of episode 23 will always remain my favorite scene of the original series. So epic yet so small and simple. A man brought to the depths of despair is given hope and the confidence to try again by none other than his future self. Brilliant. The mad scientist returning is always a fine sight to see. I love Okabe as a protagonist, and I mean both sides of himself. His chuuni dramatic behavior and his soft, quiet and serious yet caring side. The plan to deceive himself seems so confusing but at the end its so simple. Escaping the Beta Worldline by preventing world war 3 is simple thru the destruction of the time machine thesis. But saving Kurisu is a little more difficult solely because its cos of Okabe seeing her lifeless body that he sends the first d-mail and is the diverging point to the Alpha worldline. Therefore Kurisu must die there, however its only the observation of her body there that is needed for that. Hence why deceiving only Okabe by faking her death is the only thing that is necessary. Also cos the experiences of the Alpha worldline are necessary too. Without them we wouldn't have known, have fallen in love with and thus have a reason to save Kurisu in the first place. Its such a good message too. Don't avoid our past mistakes and experiences, cos they are a part of us. They shape who we are now. Anyway by deceiving himself, this is how the "changed past" should look like now. Past Okabe sees "dead" Kurisu, he sends the first d-mail to go to the Alpha worldline and spends the three weeks there and comes back. However due to Kurisu not actually being dead and cos world war 3 has been prevented, Okabe returns to the Steins Gate worldline not the Beta worldline. The past that we encountered remains the same, but the results have been changed.
The one reasons (there's a lot of reasons), I love Steins;Gate is simply because the story itself is very complex (for most of the journey), but once you see how all the moving pieces come into play, you get a very comprehendible story. The protagonist isn't someone who has a basic power, such as super strength, speed, etc, but rather one that centers around the story while keeping it very relatable. He doesn't just go around flaunting his talents or abilities with every scenario he runs into. Okarin handles it using rationality and basic understanding that we as humans use in everyday situations. The concept of Okarin needing to see a "dead Kurisu" in order to use the D-mail machine and experience those 3 weeks is genius. As you mentioned, he just needed to be influenced or convinced that Kurisu was dead in order for her to be saved in the S;G world line. My thoughts were kinda scattered, but I enjoyed the conversation!
A line from the visual novel I wish was in the anime is that after stabbing Kurisu and yelling, Okabe thinks to himself "Ah... The voice I heard that day... Was my own." Referring to the scream he hears in the beginning before discovering Kurisu's body. It really helps you understand why he's so broken after the fact. It's not JUST that he killed the woman he loves with his own two hands, but that he's technically done so TWICE now because her death is so set in stone. Three times, if you wanna count sacrificing the time he spent with her in the other worldline to save Mayuri.
The biggest takeaway for me is how the creator had this planned from the very start. To develop a story where the plot centers around the concept of time travel is surely to have lots of holes and gaps, given the very premise of time travel itself is very confusing. The very first episode when Okarin stumbled upon Kirisu's body, he was just as stunned as we were. When he found out that he was the one who murdered Kurisu we were just as stunned as he was. Truly excellent writing!
Thank you for posting all 24 episodes. It was a lot of fun to see you. If you keep posting on Steins Gate0, you won't be so happy. Some people say that 0 is a snake's foot, but that's not the case, and now I like 0 better. Hopefully, I want you to watch episode 25 (OVA) and watch 23β and then move on to 0. I'm sorry if the translation is not correct. Well, I wish you good luck on your further Steins Gate journey. EL Psy congroo!
20:11 If you rewatch the first episode, we can hear someone screaming. At this point, since it's the first episode, we dont even realise its the same voice as Okabe.
Didn't even catch that... Okabe was hearing himself scream as he originally thought it was Kurisu. Still can't get over the ending and how everything was carefully planned from the start.
did you notice? The events of this episode 23 were all depicted in the episode 1. The time machine on the roof and Suzuha's appearance. Kurisu said "I met 15 minutes ago to you" with Okarin, who should have met for the first time. Okarin scream when he stabs Kurisu. That is why Steins;Gate is said to be a masterpiece. There are two more stories in store for you. One is the movie version "Steins Gate".(2013) This is a future story one year after episode 24. It is a work that can be said to be the "final chapter" of the story "Steins Gate". And the other is "Steins Gate Zero"(2018). Actually, the foreshadowing of "Zero" is stretched in "Steins Gate". There is a foreshadowing that has not been collected. As the original author said, "Zero" is not a sequel, but a part of the story of "Steins Gate". Please look forward to the final foreshadowing of "Steins;Gate" being revealed in "Zero". However, before watching "Zero", please watch "Steins Gate" episode 23 (β) “Divide by Zero” as much as possible. EL PSY KONGROO P,S The lyrics of the OP of episode 23 indicated the ending of episode 23 as it was. And the ED of episode 23 is the OP of the first VN version of Steins;Gate.
I didn't even realize that the scream Okabe heard in episode 1, was indeed himself from the future. Also with the line about Kurisu saying " I met you 15 minutes ago" completely glossed over my head. Like the Okarin from episode 1, I was clueless as to what she meant. I am aware of the backlash with 0, but I'm looking forward to seeing more of the foreshadowing and events playing out. Also a movie?? I'll have to save that for last after I finish 23B, and 0. Thanks for the info! EL PSY CONGROO
If you enjoyed Steins;Gate and loved it’s characters, you will enjoy Steins;Gate 0. It truly is a show that gives further depth to each of the beloved characters and expands the story in ways you had no idea you wanted and never would have expected. It’s the Steins;Gate for people who want more of the anime. Great reaction material and just a great watch all around. Hope you enjoy and I’ll be here for it. (Don’t forget to watch episode 23ß of original S;G before starting S;G0)
I'm interested into watching 0 for two reasons. One, I'd like to see any of the event that they did not show in Steins; Gate in how it lead up to the final two episodes. Two, there seems to be some backlash with 0 as it isn't regarded as good as S;G. Glad you enjoyed the reaction! I'll be reacting to 23B next!
Now that you have experienced the finale it is time for (this is for anyone who is interested) the only canon (for now) Steins;Gate related epilougue, Holy Day of the Calamitous Rebirth. This story is about Okabe suffering from PTSD due to the Nae incident. Fun short read while leaving stuff open ended still while hinting at what Okabe is doing later in the other novels. Now Steins;Gate 0. Many will hate me for this but in all of SciADV it is one of my least favorite titles only beating Robotics;Notes DaSH. I don't know it just doesn't click for me like the Chaos; series or the original Steins;Gate does but there also a few reasons I can come up with. Even though I don't like it shouldn't mean you don't watch it though (it's just my opinion) I know a few who really like it for what it is. Well what about other stories after Steins;Gate like the movie? The movie is in a weird state of being canon and not canon because of Anonymous;Code that is getting an English localization in 2023. I hear from people that the title will help canonize many originally non canon stories although I don't know 100% if it's true. Many ideas in SciADV will be explained or talked about in A;C and from what I've heard it is very good. What about other non canon Steins;Gate stuff? Well there is Linear Bounded Phenogram a bunch of mini stories set in different worldlines. Then there is My Darlings Embrace, a romance visual novel for each of the female characters. There are also drama CDs that are sometimes nice to read/listen to. Steins;Gate has so much side content to list off but these are a few. Anything beyond Steins;Gate? As I've said many times, yes. This is only part 2 to a larger series known as the Science Adventure series. A 5 (9? technically) part series of visual novels. To keep it brief I will put the recommended read order for the novels if you want to check them out. Chaos;Head (Noah) set in 2009 Steins;Gate set in 2010 Robotics;Notes (Elite) set in 2019 Chaos;Child set in 2015 Anonymous;Code set in 2037 My favorite being Chaos;Child (I think it's a lot better than S;G) I will never stop recommending it. Well, anyways I am going to enjoy a nice ham sandwich, good luck on Steins;Gate 0! El Psy Kongroo
There's a special award that must be given for creators of such circularly consistent time travel shows likes this. I can't remember many others of this kind other than S;G, maybe only Dark by Netflix. Bit we definitely need more of them!
Agreed! I've seen other videos talking about how Steins;Gate wouldn't be able to compete with the anime being produced today, but regardless of the animation, the writing and thought put into this series is what makes it really special.
5:22 Very nice okabe yelling doctor in a mocking voice. 7:23 this scare was more comical than sad, I already knew it was going to happen... Whoever likes mayuri likes an upa. 8:59 Every time I've watched it, it's unbelievable that metal is what started the war hahaha. mayushi's upa. 12:55 This ending is very good, it's the vn op. About Steins;gate has an ova (episode 25) and a movie. If you're going to watch Steins;gate 0 I recommend watching mayuri's monologue, it's on youtube. It's better than the 24 episodes of Steins;gate 0. 22:30 music is Another Heaven ending in the vn.
The fact that it says her name on the METAL UPA and is shown nationally as time travel research gets shared with Russia is hilarious. I can't believe the Upa had such purpose. I'll be diving into 23b and I'll look for the Ova as well before starting 0. I'll also be starting a new series along with 0. (Either Kaguya or 86).
