I will never recover from the fact that Frieren learned a spell to make grapes sour because she remembered 70 years ago Eisen liked sour grapes, and a spell to clean rust off statues because all of the statues of Himmel, Heiter and Eisen are now rusty.
That's the good worldbuilding of Frieren at play. Folk magic is just that. Practical small spells that were made to help people go about their daily life and improve it. It's refreshing that spells people likely dedicated their lives to would never directly change the world except make it a slightly better place. It's like what Gandalf says in the Hobbit. It's the small things that keep the darkness at bay. Not every spell needs to be one of offense. A spell to clean clothes or remove oil stains would be far more beloved by most people and improve lives far more.
The first time I cried to this show was after him saying his favorite food was sour grapes and realizing that's why she learned the spell. I can't verbalize why that affected me so much, but it did
Qual was no joke, after waking up 80 years later, all it took was seeing Fern's defensive spell to be able understand the concept, replicate it, and immediately identify it's weakness. He didn't get owned because he was trash. He got owned because he didn't keep up with the meta game strats for the past 80 years. If he hadn't been sealed, who knows WHAT sort of insane magic techniques he would have invented.
Qual probably need a day or two to catch up with that 80 years that he fall behind, considering he only need to see the defensive magic ONCE to able to figure out what it do, how to do it, and it's weakness. Plus, considering what been revealed in future episode, Qual probably can turn the tide of battle if Frieren missed, and Qual knows what Frieren did to his spell, which he could developed a direct counter right there.
Another thing is, he had no idea Frieren would be able to fly. kinda a spoiler (for later episodes): In the second half of S1 it is explained in more depth, but until quite recently flight magic was exclusive to demons and other monsters. So Qual doesn't really expect attacks from above. And even then, you can see Frieren take great care not to reveal this too soon. She waits through Qual's initial storm of attacks and only starts her own counter-attack while he is focused on that single massive shot Qual then tries. Btw, a large part of this fight is shown from Qual's perspective. Most of the time Fern is in the center of his vision but you can still see Frieren somewhere to the side. Then once Qual blasts his last attack and Frieren vanishes, the camera movement clearly indicates he is looking for her. And when he eventually finds her, she has already started casting that final spell.
I just want to highlight how formidable Qual was even though he's the 1st baddie, quickly eliminated, and used as a lesson for Fern. He was stuck for 80yrs while his spell was analyzed, countered and improved upon. But upon seeing Fern's 1st defensive shield, Qual was able to replicate it immediately and able to figure out its weakness. If Frieren wasn't strong enough to end him in 1 hit, if Frieren fired her improved Zoltraak but Qual survived, Qual would've figured out the new Zoltraak as well, and might figure out a weakness as well. Actually, as Qual was dying, he noticed something different about Frieren's Zoltraak.
yeah if Frieren and Fern wasn't there and he was given even a short time to see the change in magic in 80 year he would have become impossible to win just like he was 80 year before
I love this comment, which highlighted how much of a genius Qual was, the instant replication of the defensive spell, the instant recognition of its weakness, and the next course of action he would take, which Frieren predicted based on how beforehand thats what was practiced with Fern and how you pointed out that it is implied how much Frieren acknowledges how much of a threat Qual at that time, so killing him instantly was the right move bc of his talents as a Genius mage... I mean, what we know now, and how Frieren described how hard and difficult she and the party heroes fought against him, is a testament of how much of a bad*ss Qual was/is
also on the new episodes on the mage test arc i don't know if watchers noticed it but fern used the same technique as qual when she fought the girl with earth magic... defensive magic is draining too much mana so just like qual she spams a barage of zoltrak then when the defense is exhausted she used a large more powerful zoltrak just what qual did😂

I find it crazy that this pretty much side character with barely any screen time is so beloved by so many (crazy in the positive meaning of the word). It's practically a small religion in Japan by now. Himmel has made his mark all over the world too. There was a story from Taiwan not too long ago, where an otaku risked his life to stop a serious knife attack on the metro (it happened on the anniversary of another deadly knife attack that claimed the lives of many people), and when the journalists asked him what made him stand up and tackle the assailant despite the clear risk to his own life, he just replied: "It's what Himmel the Hero would have done." Despite only ever existing in fantasy as memories of another fantasy character, Himmel managed to touch so many lives across the world and made us better people. Himmel is the GOAT of all GOATs.

@@Depressed_until_deadthat’s the thing. JJK rarely gives us any moment to get us attached to the characters and they exploits the “killing of characters” way too much as well which led to such an emotionless battle manga. Gojo is loved because they give readers time to get attached to him. But then damn author fucked him over. Nice battle manga but story is by far not on the same level as Frieren.
The opening is great for sure, but I absolutely adore this ending, the song is so powerful, the lyrics are so beautiful and it just complements the show so well
did you even read the lyrics to the opening? I fell like people heard the song in japanese and made up their mind that it doesn't belong in this anime. watch the english version or the cover. the opening is goated.
33:00 The other spells also show how she cares about Heiter and Himmel too, and it's little details like this coming back around to punch your feelers why I love it so much. She knows Himmel liked to show off and wants to preserve his memory, so she learns a spell to clean statues of him and to let his legend endure. She also disapproved of Heiter's drinking, so she leared a spell to make tea to possibly give him a substitute, but he had already quit drinking when she met him again.
There's so many amazing anime this season - Farmland Saga S2, JJK S2, Heavenly Delusios, Oshi no Ko, Apocathery Diaries etc. I never imagine Frieren would sneak its way to my favorite Anime of the year!
This is my favorite anime of the year, so I’m sooooo excited to see what you two think about it! The combination of seeing a channel I love reaction to something I love is the best Christmas gift ❤🥰
41:50 I think the reason Freiren always gives Fern head pats is because she actually liked when Himmel and Heiter would do it (the only two humans she travelled with, Eisen didn’t and he’s a dwarf) so she thinks it’s something humans do to make the other feel better/good so she wants to show that feeling to Fern in “the human way”. I think it’s really cute to think of it this way, Freiren so damn wholesome
Although it is difficult to express in English translation, Fern actually always speaks polite Japanese to Frieren with great respect. That hasn't changed since she was a child.
First off, I really appreciate the way the both of your react, respond, question , synthesize your thoughts with substance and depth--we definitely appreciate it. As an anime-only watcher and who is caught up with the latest episode of Frieren, I look forward to seeing your reactions to this amazing fantasy series! This show is definitely up in my top all-time favorite anime lists. We're in for a ride--it'll be a great journey for sure and at this point, the destination matters less (in my opinion). Thank you both for sharing your reactions and looking forward to the next one! 🙏🏻
The beauty of this show is that a lot of things can be interpreted different ways or in fact something can have many different meanings and all of them are true. Like the sunrise scene is about Frieren realizing that it's not about sunrise itself, but seeing your friends enjoying it, but also about just doing something with your friends, no matter what it is, but also about experiencing something beautiful with people close to you and sharing that memory, but also about doing things you'd not be able to normally do by yourself, but also about being pushed by your friends to do something you didn't have intention to doing, but you ultimately end up enjoying. Neither reading really contradicts one another and all of them have value. Another thing about their encounter with Qual is that it also showcased how Qual (and demons in general) are arrogant. Despite figuring out how to make a defensive spell on a fly and being flat out told that Zoltraak is now basic spell for humans, when Qual saw Frieren flying and preparing spell (which was also something mages couldn't do 80 years ago and he didn't anticipate), his first instinct was to attack her with Zoltraak instead of protecting himself from his own spell that he didn't even consider she could cast back at him. The reality of situation didn't really sink in for him and he still was considering himself the OP mage he was 80 years ago, showcasing how living long live can be a weakness as well, because with all time in the world, you become stagnant and evolve and adapt much slower that other races with shorter lifespans. It's something that Frieren used to experience as well, but now is learning to overcome, no longer seeing just the length of time spend as the only important part, but that the quality of how you spend that time is also important. 1 day you spend doing something important, is more valuable than 50 or even 100 years, spend just passing time leisurely. Lastly, a bit of heads up so you won't miss a very cool moment later on, how like majority of anime-only watchers did, thanks to the way show is localized. The actual title is "Sousou no Frieren" (葬送のフリーレン), with "sousou" (葬送) meaning "attending a funeral procession; seeing off the deceased; burial of someone's remains; observing a burial". Basically, being present during process of sending off someone dead. That's why combined with general premise of the show and first chapters, it makes logical sense in the context to translate it as something like "Frieren at the funeral", as it's clear the theme of the story is about Frieren outliving people she knows and attending a lot of their funerals. Translating the original title, especially for it to sound good, can be quite difficulty, that's why localizing it at "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" sounds like a good idea and it definitely sounds good and gives you good idea of what the show will be about. The thing is, author later does a bit of twist on the title, by making a certain group of characters using it as a nickname for Frieren, which gives it a whole new meaning that is definitely not how the word is used normally, making it a double meaning phrase. So because of that for people watching official release, the double meaning is lost, which is a shame and honestly the translator's job to be able to preserve it. People in fansubs tried to translate it certain way to preserve the original meaning, but I'm personally not convinced it's the best option as it feels a bit too direct and on the nose. The translation closer to original title, which imo the best preservers the both intended meanings, would be something like "Frieren of the funreal". I won't say more than that. Once you get to that moment, you'll understand what I meant.
Ya know you would think watching so many different reactions or re-watching the same show would dwindle a show down to being boring... expect for those great ones. No matter how many times I rewatch Frieren I still pick up little extra details. That's what makes a book or film or anime so great. I rarely re-watch any anime more then once expect the special ones. I have annual rewatches for Kill la Kill, Gurren Lagann and most likely Frieren is going to enter that list.
These two (specially Anna) are so perceptive wrt to storylines and where they're going with it, they almost never miss a detail. It's even better in Re:Zero, which is already a highly re-watchable show, combined with their great insight and perceptiveness.
The thing that made me smile the most about your reaction is your attention to details. Most people miss the sour grape spell reference. I immediately smiled when you called it out. Almost every spell Frieren collects is a spell to make her friends happy, or a spell to honor her friends who have long since gone.
15 minutes in. You guys are already more intelligent , and have more analytical input than most reaction channels . I know the original subtitled version feels authentic when it comes to anime, but honestly the English dub for this show was absolutely brilliant as well, simply because of Frieren's English voice actress. She did SUCH an incredible job with the character.

Someone said something interesting that I think it's true. When she was alone traveling her time was going fast and that's why it was shown in like 3 minutes but the times she spent with Himmel or Hiter later on were slower bc it's dear to her and every moment is important and by the way fun fact all names and places are words in German
I Am so annoyingly happy that you are watching this anime❣️ I think I have cried every single episode from every possible emotion. Frieren is the perfect anime, the perfect story, the perfect starting point to introduce anyone into anime and just show them how rich of an experience it is. Really happy you are watching it! ❤
You're the first ones I've seen who caught that she used the sour grape spell in the montage with Eisen. 1:19:04 It's a classic fantasy trope that elves develop emotional bonds, romantic feelings or sexual urges much slower due to their long lifespans. I think it's been kinda forgotten in more recent fantasy franchises this was usually a very common scenario a few decades ago. Elves were the race that quietly goes extinct, a relic of a bygone era, while humans were on the rise. Humans on the other hand are the opposite, the fast developing, innovative species that lives so much in the moment. I think Record of Lodoss War covered this topic a little bit as well (great fantasy classic if you haven't seen it yet btw). 1:27:50 I'm pretty sure that's exactly it. "You're just that kind of person" was Himmel meaning she'd enjoy it for the others, so he DID knew her after all. And her saying she wouldn't able to see the sunrise if she was alone is obviously not referring to the actual sunrise, but what she'd see looking at the others - that's her sunrise. It's such an important and endearing trait of her that goes through the whole show, it is also the whole reason why she collects all those silly "useless" spells too, because they may make someone's day - and maybe even change the world. I also just love how all of her friends knew her long before she knew herself, even as far back as 1000 years ago. It's so weirdly endearing in a retrospective kind of way of her figuring herself out. Speaking of which... Honestly, her small moments of realizations is what I am living for in this show - particularly after a re-watch. Because then you know her so well, that you basically watch her through Himmel's eyes, making all those scenes hit even harder. He basically saw right through her and saw her beauty the moment she cast the flower field in the forest.
1:08:25 Having re-read the manga and watched the anime as it airs, I think this is a good line of thought to hold on to for the series. I've just had several things hit me over and over at different times on different revisits, and how you can infer and tie things together with both new and old information in this series can hit so hard and be so satisfying. Edit: When you said 90's anime color palette my mind went to blue and pink cityscapes at night, and when you said DBZ I thought of the Broly movie/OVA when everything turns purple/green/blue.
Moin Guys :) I'm back. First I have to say, your pronounciation of german words is pretty good. All I can do now is give the hint to use google translator to listen to the pronounciation. ( Little speaker in the window ) Welcome to this calming anime. Its a masterpiece ! Very close to Aot and 86 in my personal TOP10 ;) CYA ;)
Great reaction to a fantastic series! FYI, this is from a manga. It’s more or less a straight adaptation but it does make notable additions that elevate the series (notably battles).
For the 4 episode special that they released all at once in Japan they also had a special ED done as well which you guys should definitely watch because it encapsulates Frirens relationship with Fern so beautifully. It doesn't appear anywhere else in the anime besides the 4 episode special, only the song does once in a later episode.
17:10 Seeing coloured subtitles take me back to when anime wasn’t so popular and studios weren’t really a thing so fans would do the translation. Because of that we got a lot of Power Points styled Text. So a lot of fade in & out, texts sliding from all angles. Sometimes it would be wavy and the texts size would change depending on how loud the character was speaking. Some characters had their own colours. Now whither the subtitles were correct or not I couldn’t tell you. But I still understood the plot.
I am SO HAPPY you guys started watching this, and that you watched the initial 4 episodes at once! It's my AOTY. From the beautiful animation to the characters and storytelling, it is all amazingly top tier. It just keeps getting better and better and I really think you're going to enjoy it. Gojo is loved because they give readers time to get attached to him. But then damn author fucked him over. Nice battle manga but story is by far not on the same level as Frieren.
dump kaisen was dead, so boring
YES! Peakren is here, you’re gonna love this series!
Not peak, but not bad
@@maninthespacebruh, it’s phenomenal. Let it cook.
It's literally top 3 of the season.@@maninthespace
@@addollz6192 Wait, what is number 3? Ik JJK is 1 or 2.
Frieren, jjk,Vinland saga best of this year
I legit watch this show every week and think to myself 'god damn, Ben and Anna would love this show'
The opening is great for sure, but I absolutely adore this ending, the song is so powerful, the lyrics are so beautiful and it just complements the show so well
The opening grew on me, it´s a good song. The ending from Milet though is a masterpiece 😍
OP is like 2/10, ED is 8/10, ep 11 insert is 11/10
100% I swear the ED has actually made me nearly cry more then the show, like a whole episode that makes me sad but I dont cry and then the ED plays
did you even read the lyrics to the opening? I fell like people heard the song in japanese and made up their mind that it doesn't belong in this anime. watch the english version or the cover. the opening is goated.
@@CSRT123 yeah the lyrics are the blandest shit I've seen, absolutely lazy
33:00 The other spells also show how she cares about Heiter and Himmel too, and it's little details like this coming back around to punch your feelers why I love it so much.
She knows Himmel liked to show off and wants to preserve his memory, so she learns a spell to clean statues of him and to let his legend endure. She also disapproved of Heiter's drinking, so she leared a spell to make tea to possibly give him a substitute, but he had already quit drinking when she met him again.
I thought the statue/bronze spell was for Himmel's statues

Omg you guys started this show!!! I'm really glad that you did! Hopes you enjoy this☺️
There's so many amazing anime this season - Farmland Saga S2, JJK S2, Heavenly Delusios, Oshi no Ko, Apocathery Diaries etc. I never imagine Frieren would sneak its way to my favorite Anime of the year!
The crazy thing is, we haven't even gotten to the best parts of the manga yet. Frieren is such a special story. I can't wait for the next cour!
I love that you guys are loving this as much as the rest of us do!! Such a beautiful well written story.
This is my favorite anime of the year, so I’m sooooo excited to see what you two think about it! The combination of seeing a channel I love reaction to something I love is the best Christmas gift ❤🥰
You know they are going to love. It was made for them. 😃
There are so many good animes this season and what's even better is how many of them are more than 12 episodes, we're truly blessed
13:13 Knowing the origin of that ring is just-I cried when I saw it. I had never put the pieces together before.
So happy y’all are reacting to Frieren! It’s one of my all time favorites and I know y’all will love it so much!
"How hard it must be to always be left behind."
Great perception, excellent comment.
This show is becoming one of my top 10 of all time. A true Masterpiece so far, I am sure you'll agree.
This show has been such a welcome surprise this season
I am so excited to see you guys react to this, you guys always have the best discussions when it comes to deep shows like this
Ah ñau 😸... you have no idea how many people missed the sour grapes spell reference to Eisen's taste in the 3rd episode!!... 😊
This is why these two are the GOATs lol. They watch the shows like we do, thats why its so rewarding watching them watch stuff.
OMG FINALLY YOU GUYS IN FOR THE RIDE!!
Just found and watched, and you're one of the very few who did the entire prologue in one go. Glad you're enjoying this!
Although it is difficult to express in English translation, Fern actually always speaks polite Japanese to Frieren with great respect. That hasn't changed since she was a child.

Ms. and Miss mean the same thing in English. The subtitles are fine.
Fun fact: Frieren has the same VA as Anya from SpyXFamily. And I think no one would have guessed that😅
I'm so excited to see you two watch this! It's so thematically rich and deep. The analyses are gonna be crazy!
I'm SO happy to see this. Hope ya'll have a Merry Christmas!
If you check out the lyrics in the opening it’s essentially the story of the series.
Seeing this video show up on my recommendations made me excited as if watching a movie. You guys really are the best reactors I’ve seen.
So happy to see you guys watching this, I know for sure you'll love it. It's such a breathe of fresh air this show!
I am the same way with avatar and attack on titan, the journey really is best the part like frieren says haha
Can you imagine that Frieren has the same voice actress than Anya from SpyxFamily? 🙂
Im going to enjoy rewatching this series for probably the tenth time at this point with you guys.
Also Ben predicting the afterlife after the second episode … good call. Haha
Both of the end credit sequences for frieren are absolutely incredible .
The staff members participating can be described as the Avengers of the Japanese anime industry, they're that impressive.
I was awaiting for you guys starting this show, and am glad to see you like them. I look forward to seeing the future episodes!
I also love how excited you got about the grapes 🍇 ❤ it was such a small spell but a huge gesture to do for friend
I love this show!So happy that you guys are reacting to it!
Edit:Wtf you guys just predicted the core premise of the show so accurately based on just the name?!
Anna's seriously built different for that prediction lol.
i saw everyone voting for frieren so this gives me the perfect opportunity to watch the anime alongside Autosave
You guys are in for a treat, this show is fucking amazing and you can feel that it was made with love.
himmel = heaven
heiter = bright
eisen = iron
fern = remote
flamme = flame
I won't spoil future names you have not seen yet.
Any chance of reacting to Dangers in My Heart or Duke of Death? Thanks for your in-depth analyses!

I love this show so much. its so heartwarming and feel-good, but with such sad undertones throughout the whole thing. not even to mention the absolutely gorgeous art. a true masterpiece
while waiting for you guys to come back, i guess ill rewatch frieren again
ohh yes i have been waiting for you guys to reacting to frieren!! i just love the story and the animation, someone pointed out that the clothing animation watch out for next episodes clothing animation, the actions are so wild like so detailed😁.
Happy you guys watch the show !
Some information droplets that add flavour (:D) :
(most) names of characters and places in this anime are german: Frieren= freezing ; Himmel= sky (just like the sky blue flowers
1:34:22 it's a manga adaptation, and there will be 28 episodes total!
Oh shit thats awesome. Do you know how long the manga is, and if the manga will be completely adapted in those 28 episodes? Or will there be a second season? (I hope there is lol)
@@arwenlostlorn6569 this season will cover around 60 chapters of the manga, as of today , there are around 120 manga chapter released
@@DestianoY Ohhh so it's still ongoing? I thought the manga was complete but the fact that the anime is adapting so much makes me happy :D

超級好看
I know the original subtitled version feels authentic when it comes to anime, but honestly the English dub for this show was absolutely brilliant as well, simply because of Frieren's English voice actress. She did SUCH an incredible job with the character.
So excited that you two are watching frieren
I've been waiting so long for this day!
Thank You guys for that!!!
YES!! Been waiting for yall to finally watch this! Love your reactions and commentary
This is like a Christmas gift to me since it's also the eve, opening this app and this very reaction in one go how one is supposed to watch it (first 4 episodes). Thank you and Merry Christmas guys! (if you celebrate :D)
Someone said something interesting that I think it's true. When she was alone traveling her time was going fast and that's why it was shown in like 3 minutes but the times she spent with Himmel or Hiter later on were slower bc it's dear to her and every moment is important and by the way fun fact all names and places are words in German
I Am so annoyingly happy that you are watching this anime❣️
I think I have cried every single episode from every possible emotion.
I was just thinking today what will be a perfect anime to show to someone that has never seen anime before... and this is it. Frieren is the perfect anime, the perfect story, the perfect starting point to introduce anyone into anime and just show them how rich of an experience it is.
Really happy you are watching it! ❤
i'm happy frieren got them so many views ^^ most viewed video in months since the AOT finale!
I have just recently fallen in love with this show and Mushoku and just found your channel. You guys are great and keep it up 👍
I'm glad to know you guys start this show!
This is one of the best and unique anime of all time.
Finally started watching this one and thought it would be great to see you guys watch!
I have loved all 16 episodes to date. So many moments, and Frieren has supplanted Oshi No Ko as my personal AotY.
I'm so glad I watched Oshi No Ko. I slept on it for a while because I was like "oh not for me", that plot twist WAS INSANE. Such a beautiful show
@@TheWorldsOkayestUSMarine I adored that show. Kana became a fave character this year!
Let's go!!!!
Thanks for the early Christmas gift Ben and Anna!

Great reaction to a fantastic series! FYI, this is from a manga. It’s more or less a straight adaptation but it does make notable additions that elevate the series (notably battles).
I was waiting for you guys to react to this. 'Worth the wait. =)
Peakren is the Christmas present reaction I didn't deserve but I'm thankful!
Frieren means "to freeze" Eisen means "iron" Heiter means "bright" Himmel means "heaven" and Fern means "remote" as in to be far away/isolated
Also: Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda game!
YES! THEY'RE FINALLY WATCHING PEAK!!!
Edit: anyone know if they've watched "86"? Watched this recently and I feel like they'd really like it, especially the last two episodes. Would love to see them react to it.
Yeah, 86 would be right up their alley.
Why do you guys call it "PEAK"?
It was in the same poll so maybe in future they will watch it
i wish you both all the fun with this anime
just speaking for myself, but i never watched a show like frieren
its just amazing :)
Let's gooooo! Can't wait to watch, this is my favorite anime rn
me, being months late to this reaction + playlist: 😅 Ah yes, Frieren. The series where I couldn't stop crying for like 5 episodes straight when I binged it lmao Once I caught up, when it was airing, I think at ep 9 or 10?, I made sure to sit and watch when it was live religiously. 😻 The series is just, as a whole, beyond gorgeous.
Love you guys for blessing us with all this at once lol ❤
Btw, Frieren is directed by Keiichirō Saitō. Same person who directed Bocchi the Rock and key animator of the Oshi no Ko OP sequence.
Also, the OP (Yūsha) is from Yoasobi. Same duo who did “Idol”.
Now THAT'S how you properly Frieren.
Man took seven pages of notes in the first three episodes.
You know where a trip "Beyond Journey's End" leads?
That's right:
Watch A Place further than the Universe
Im soooo happy you guys are reacting tot his!!
As someone who loves the manga and the anime so happy u two are watching this!!
I'm obsessed with this show, I mean, they hooked me on the first episode caring for 4 characters that I knew nothing about - which is amazing. The art style and animation really reminds me of Mushoku Tensei too which I love. I will be catching up to watch the rest with you, by far one of my favorite shows, top 5 already!
