The art was OK and 1-2 of the OSTs were decent. I'm trying to check out other people's opinions to get some more insights and viewpoints but it seems like this was not for me, I would rate it a 5/10 at best for the first 10 episodes. The developments felt minimal because Frieren is a much older living being, whose development is slower on purpose. Rewatching this through your reaction video has me realized that the fast pacing of the story kind of reflects how time works for Frieren, who thinks 10, 20, years are barely longer than a blink of the eye. Such a thoughtful method to tell a tale, I am loving this series even more ❤
I normally don't like blueprint fantasy shows (which of course, in the end, Frieren do kinda deviate away from), but I've read a comment about how this show has made him fall in love with anime again and it made me curious. After blitzing through all the available episodes, I can now say the same thing: Frieren made me remember how great of a story-telling medium anime can be and how I've fallen in love with it all these years.
U can feel all the loves that went into it. Starting by the story and ending by the animation. I couldn´t see any blunder until know. Not like i want to say that there aren´t smaller fails but i certainly couldn´t make them out between all this perfection. XD
glad to see you finally watched Frieren. its a masterpiece. as always loved your reactions. Expect this mellow vibe throughout the show. its not your typical adventure story after all.
So glad you're starting this journey! Here's some translations for all the german names as they directly correlate to the characters and places: Frieren - To be cold Himmel - Heaven Heiter - Cheerful Eisen - Iron Fern - Distant Ewig - Eternal Qual - Agony Flamme - Flame Ende - End
Frieren is not "to be cold". Its translated to freez. "To be cold" would translate to "kalt sein" Himmel could also be Sky. But Heaven is also correct. The rest is already perfect.
@@ATypiclaNPC Considering the correlation to her character "to be cold" seemed like the better choice as Frieren can come off as cold due to her nature and it also translates to "frieren" besides "kalt sein". "Kalt sein" is simply the literal translation. I forgot to add "sky" for Himmel though

Welcome to your new favorite show!! I love how after Himmel passes it shows how long it’s been since he died. That’s Frierens subconscious perspective on life now. He was THAT important to her
This is a real treat! Somehow didn't mentally register you'd not already been covering Frieren. Quite excited to watch your reactions to this amazing and beautiful show.
When you said you were just 15 minutes and you couldn't be crying yet, I think everybody I've watched reacting to this has said the same. Somehow they manage to get you that fully invested in the characters that fast, and then the show just blossoms like a flower all around that investment. Also, note they start dating things "after the death of Himmel the Hero." There are events which coincide with that date, but you have to pay attention or you'll miss them. If you think about timing, here's some numbers. Himmel and Heiter were likely in their mid- to late-teens when they began the adventure to slay the deamon king. Add 10 years and they return to the capital city in their late 20s. Add 50 and they're approaching 80. Add 20 more when she visits Heiter's home and he's pushing 100. Then 6 more to train Fern, who is 15 when she departs with Frieren as her apprentice. So Fern was 9 at 20 years after Himmel's death. You can calculate up from there. MEwanwhile Frieren was over 1000 years old at the beginning of E1. The buttefly has meaning. If you recall in E2 Fern's memory of her first great spell was producing a swarm of magical butterflies. So Frieren knows more about her than she realizes. Your cat's gorgeous btw. As an FYI, almost all personal and place names in the show are German Look them up for hints about respective themes. Here's a few you've already met: Frieren = Freeze Himmel = Heaven Heiter = Bright Eisen = Iron Fern = Remote Qual = Torment (with really bad implications) "A mere ten year adventure." She said that in E1 and E4. But did you not, her body language, tone of voice, and even cadence of speech all changed between the two times? She has changed so much in that time.
There are such great bits to notice on rewatch, too. That ring Frieren is playing with. The way Himmel reacts to the field of flowers spell. It's not even important details, it's just things that don't matter until after you learn more context around them.
This has to be one of my top anime of all time. I really appreciate how all of the characters feel like real people and the story really takes its time exploring the world and its inhabitants. I love the subtle remainders that time is valuable and we should appreciate the people we care about. I think the story, while simple, does everything it needs to do right. Its not a revenge story, its not a coming of age, its not a shonen or classic power fantasy, its simply a journey of remembrance and rediscovery. Its like retracing your childhood or youth, walking around your old town or going back to your old school and remembering how life used to be, not in a sad way, but in a wholesome fondness of what once was. Atleast thats the vibe I get and part of a variety of reasons for why I love this show. 10/10
I completely glossed over the ring the first time I watched through this series, and had forgotten about it by the time *that* scene in Ep. 14 comes along. Decided to watch it again on a whim and its just heartbreaking. This elf is the epitome of "Is he into me or is he just Canadian?".
I'm so glad that you're reacting to this anime series, #AlanaMisako. It's so amazing, and also beautifully animated. I'm still continuously supporting you because your anime content is absolutely amazing, and also because I really enjoy watching your reactions to different anime series.
i like how i already know the show goes so i got to hear your thoughts on what MAY happen and the entire time i just had to be like "ehhhh...kinda?" or "okay no" etc etc. love it all.
wow i managed to complete watching this 11 hours video without any skippings or fast forwards or quicken it at all. your commentaries has been the best of all...
All 4 of these episodes dropping immediately really helped bring this anime home. People may have known the source material, but nobody was ready for this. Episode 1 may have interested people, but they gave us enough meat to get to the real premise.
"It was a mere ten-year adventure" and "It'll be a mere ten-year adventure" The difference in meaning to those lines... the writing of this story is just sublime.
When Frieren says they're similar, she means in respect to their relationship with magic. There ARE other ways, but that moment is showing how transparently she sees through Fern, reinforcing the old woman saying she was so much more mature. They both have backgrounds using their magic as a tool, but grow to enjoy the relationships that magic can foster when used to make the people you care about happy. It's both a representation of their love for the people in their lives, and their livelihood. They both like magic "somewhat".
Fern and Frieren are similar because they use magic to bond with people. Frieren collects spells because Himmel enjoyed them. We see the scene where Fern makes Heiter happy with her butterfly magic.
Wanna add that, the scores for frieren was made by the same guy who scored Violet Evergarden, Evan Call. So expect very grounded but thematically appropiate OSTs for the smaller moments,, n full scale orchestral setpieces for the major scenes.
9:52 “We’re 15 minutes into the show - I can’t be crying at this!” I sat down to watch this with a couple of friends of mine. They got to the end of episode one with so much as a tear. I packed the video away and told them this was not the anime for them.
One of the possible translations for the title of this series is 'Frieren at the Funeral'. Its a lovely series, but many of its themes are rooted in mortality and melancholy. I hope you enjoy it all the way.
She goes into the shop for a dragon horn twice. In one scene the shopkeeper is young. In the next he's an old old man. Thr way this show portrays the passage of time is awesome.
ive found out through google maps, a roundtrip from lisbon to beijing is only 304 days/over 16000km ... so 10 years roundtrip on a rly rly rly huge continent.
Also we learned that just because someone looks rough and scary doesn't mean they won't be friendly and helpful and knowledgeable about the city's best desserts and fancy cafes. I guess it takes a lifetime like Frieren's to be able to actually put into practice the adage "don't judge a book by its cover." I think us humans will struggle to challenge our initial instinct to fear them.
I am coming here after having watched the entirety and then subsequently read the source material. I can proudly say, Himmel died too early. I ain't no elf but even I wished to have gotten to know him more. He is the best. Every moment with him should be cherished.
Heiter using his love for drinking as an excuse to redirect talks will always be funny to me. The bastard was always drunk, but when he wasn't, he for sure is dependable.
The Quote in the beginning is from Flamme. And they animated the quote in eps 4. You were spot on, good on you. But The Demon King is dead, so the only thing left is the castle
I always see people forget that in episode 1 when Fern was not even a "proper mage". She can already conceal her mana that she's "practically invisible" even for Heiter and Frieren who are probably 2 of the best mana users of their time. She's basically Kuroko of Mages.
Idk i´dk if Heiter was such a gopod mana user but he was defenetly a good user of goddess/holy magic. Since we don´t know how it works exactly, we can´t tell if u have to have a good mana controlle. But what he certainly has, is one of the biggest talents for goddess/holy magic, for which Frieren has nearly no Talent.
@@ATypiclaNPC We do know that Goddess magic still uses mana, it's just a different form of magic. The same way Demon magic also use mana but is again a different form of magic. I do not want to post spoiler here, but this was made clear even in the anime if you read between the lines.

Rewatching this through your reaction video has me realized that the fast pacing of the story kind of reflects how time works for Frieren, who thinks 10, 20, years are barely longer than a blink of the eye. Such a thoughtful method to tell a tale, I am loving this series even more ❤
The VA for Himmel also did the voice for Garfiel in Re:Zero. Frierens VA is Anya from SpyXFamily and Fern is Maki Shijo from Kaguya-sama
XD
This was a surprise! Editing these can be a pain but thank you for the 4 episode drop!
glad to see you finally watched Frieren. its a masterpiece. as always loved your reactions. Expect this mellow vibe throughout the show. its not your typical adventure story after all.
OMG OMG ITS HAPPENING. EVERYONE STAY CALM!
Fun detail. Frieren's wearing her master Flamme's red earrings. You can see them in her flashbacks.
So glad you're starting this journey! Here's some translations for all the german names as they directly correlate to the characters and places:
Frieren - To be cold
Himmel - Heaven
Heiter - Cheerful
Eisen - Iron
Fern - Distant
Ewig - Eternal
Qual - Agony
Flamme - Flame
Ende - End
Wouldn't Frieren translate better to "to freeze"? Not 100% sure, just asking. Am Dutch so my German is usually slightly off
Frieren is not "to be cold". Its translated to freez. "To be cold" would translate to "kalt sein"
Himmel could also be Sky. But Heaven is also correct.
The rest is already perfect.
@@ATypiclaNPC Speaking of "Sein", it means "To be" and "signal" both, right?
@@ATypiclaNPC Considering the correlation to her character "to be cold" seemed like the better choice as Frieren can come off as cold due to her nature and it also translates to "frieren" besides "kalt sein". "Kalt sein" is simply the literal translation. I forgot to add "sky" for Himmel though
@@ChrisMorray Considering the correlation to her character "to be cold" seemed like the better choice as Frieren can come off as cold due to her nature and it also translates to "frieren" besides "kalt sein". "Kalt sein" is simply the literal translation.
Welcome to your new favorite show!! I love how after Himmel passes it shows how long it’s been since he died. That’s Frierens subconscious perspective on life now. He was THAT important to her
Cryingggggggg
Here's a few you've already met:
Frieren = Freeze
Himmel = Heaven
Heiter = Bright
Eisen = Iron
Fern = Remote
Qual = Torment (with really bad implications)
"A mere ten year adventure." She said that in E1 and E4. But did you not, her body language, tone of voice, and even cadence of speech all changed between the two times? She has changed so much in that time.
This show took a place in my heart immediately, glad you are watching it ^^
There are such great bits to notice on rewatch, too. That ring Frieren is playing with. The way Himmel reacts to the field of flowers spell. It's not even important details, it's just things that don't matter until after you learn more context around them.
Wasn't expecting 4 ep in a row, let's go!!
This show has a special kind of warmth
glad to see you finally starting this series! hope you enjoy the ride. it will be awesome
Thanks for the reaction! You're going to love this series!
Finally!! I knew you would enjoy this show and have been waiting to see you get on it!
FINALLY!! I've been wanting for you to react to Frieren.
You'll love this show Alana. it's such a vibe.
I've been waiting for this for so long! I hope you like the show 💜
I'm really hyped for this one.
As someone who watched way too many anime, let me say this one is really something special.
Thank you for reacting to this anime, probably one of my faves ❤
This anime is so peaceful, everyone is so nice there, it makes me wanna cry and wanting to stay there forever 😭
i like how i already know the show goes so i got to hear your thoughts on what MAY happen and the entire time i just had to be like "ehhhh...kinda?" or "okay no" etc etc. love it all.
This show has such well written characters
Yassssss!! I've been waiting for your reaction. This is one the best anime in recent times I think you'll enjoy them
FINALY YEAAAAH I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS THANK U !!
wow i managed to complete watching this 11 hours video without any skippings or fast forwards or quicken it at all.
your commentaries has been the best of all...
All 4 of these episodes dropping immediately really helped bring this anime home. People may have known the source material, but nobody was ready for this. Episode 1 may have interested people, but they gave us enough meat to get to the real premise.
Yes! I’ve been waiting for you to watch this! I hope you enjoy the show :)
finally my prayers have been answered. What an incredible and wholesome journey.
Frieren! lets Go!
Peak has arrived, you’ll love this series
Himmel and Nishinoya(Haikyuu)have the same voice actor.
"It was a mere ten-year adventure" and "It'll be a mere ten-year adventure" The difference in meaning to those lines... the writing of this story is just sublime.
Gurlly I was waiting for your reaction
wow 4 episodes thanks so much! so glad you like it :)
I've probably watched at least half a dozen people react to Frieren, and it still has me crrying every other episode. :)
FINALLY! I've been waiting for this upload for so long! Enjoy the ride, Alana! :)
Another series from Madhouse i think you would love is "A Place Further Than The Universe". Very beautiful series that i highly recommend❤
Bonus side note, Frieren VA is also Anya from Spy x Family
9:52 “We’re 15 minutes into the show - I can’t be crying at this!”
I sat down to watch this with a couple of friends of mine. They got to the end of episode one with so much as a tear. I packed the video away and told them this was not the anime for them.
OMG I WAS ABOUT TO COMMENT YOU SHOULD WATCH TTHIS IM SO HAPPY YOURE FINALLY GOING THROUGH FRIEREN
This art style is so good😭
One of the possible translations for the title of this series is 'Frieren at the Funeral'. Its a lovely series, but many of its themes are rooted in mortality and melancholy. I hope you enjoy it all the way.
I've been waiting a long time to see your reaction watching Frieren Beyond the Journey End
Blessing us with almost an hour long video and a frieren one at that 💃💫
She goes into the shop for a dragon horn twice. In one scene the shopkeeper is young. In the next he's an old old man. Thr way this show portrays the passage of time is awesome.
Dayum, you don't know how much I've waited for your reaction. *peaceful*
ITS FINALLY HERE! Omylord. Not only was i excited for you to experience vinland saga, I also wanted to see you admire frieren!
Damn, I did not expect these episodes to hit even harder after having watched more of Frieren's flashbacks in recent episodes.
Almost literally going down memory lane. Love it.
Anya is now a mage!
ive found out through google maps, a roundtrip from lisbon to beijing is only 304 days/over 16000km ... so 10 years roundtrip on a rly rly rly huge continent.
Yes!!! You finally reacted to this anime.
I was waiting for you to react to this series, finally its here.
Joined Patreon cause I don't wanna wait lol
29:35 they are similar because they bith don't love magic, but they are passionate about it because of someone that was important to them
i didnt know i was waiting for you to watch it but FINALLY YOU DID 😊
I always see people forget that in episode 1 when Fern was not even a "proper mage".
@@rosshaikenleonen1416 Yeah but since it isn´t like u could eazily learn it when u mana controle is high, i guess that ur controle about ur mana isn´t important. Not like i want to say u don´t need mana. But needing mana and needing tto controle it are two different things.
@@rosshaikenleonen1416 Like i imagine that aslong as he have man and the initiate talent and knowledge about a goddess spell he can use it. Like it controlles itself.
With this show, Winland Saga and Apothecary diary you just hit a bullseye
i was so hella waiting for this show. this is an anime that literally revived the whole fanstasy genre lmao. thinking if you would give chance after this to isekai like rezero, mushoku or eminence in shadow!
yeah those are great however frieren wanst my cup of tea idk why
differs due to our taste@@jokergamingyt5360
@@jokergamingyt5360 😬
frieren is genuinely the best show this season
nothing beats it and it's not even close
the only other show that can even compete is apothecary diaries
Loved your long reaction ! Thanks Alana !
Watch Opening: OMG so pretty so colorful.
Finish EP1 : OMG Emotional tear
And yes, thats me
I refuse to believe those aren’t squirrels
