I like how every wants to feel bad for Aura, but you have blatant display of all the people she beheaded, tortured, and is just ontologically evil as fuck. Frieren is an absolute badass.
Lol its like they are a combo because I came back watching anime in netfix because they both release at the same time and they both the best anime of the season
This is how you create strong female characters. Frieren is the proof that people want to and love to see strong female characters, if they are well written. 10/10 episode!
Marvels female heroes are cold , emotionless “cool”. Frieren is goofy, kinda dumb in some situations . And her whole goal is to become MORE vulnerable . Which is exactly what Disney seeks to erase from its female characters.
8:34 Freiren answers “somewhat” to Flamme asking her if she still likes magic, which was Fern’s exact answer to Freiren in the second episode when Freiren asks Fern if she likes magic, and that’s why Freiren said “just like me, then”. This is something I missed when I watched through the series since it had been awhile since I saw episode 2 when I saw episode 10
A small thing tha might go unoticed or get lost in translation is that Flamme says you "cant be famous until you defeat the Demon King" not because that act would make here famous , but the demon king had ordered to kill all the elves because he knew their magic could be a threat for the demons. So Flamme asked Frieren to live in obscurity so that she woouldnt draw attention to herself and her growing power and also to further built upon the whole concept of conceiling her power. That's why we get these random references from random characters about how an elf mage only got recently popular after defeating the demon king. also a very excellent directorial and storytelling detail is that the 1000 years since Flamme's passing is shown in a montage that lasts around 1 minute but the 10 years of her journey with Himmel montage lasts like 1 second, further showcasing how Frieren percieves time.
The ultimate disrespect ... turning your back to your enemy, tell him to end himself - not even putting in the work to do it yourself - and then just walk away without even looking.
I don't think I ever felt this satisfied after a fight when it wasn't even really a fight. The episode was so well done and the build up to it was just beautiful. Overall 20/10
Honestly what blows me away is that my favorite part of the episode is the one second flash of the whole rest of her adventure with Himmel. It feels like we are in her head remembering those moments and then she has that impression of the adventure before returning fully to the present. masterfully done.
What made me sad in this episode was realizing how Frieren lived hundreds of years alone before meeting Himmel, Eisen and Heiter. No wonder why she didn’t have her soft skills developed.
I always like to point out that frieren isn’t the overconfident type, and almost definitely knew that willpower could be used to resist. Her turning around and walking away meant that she was sure that she’d broken Aura’s spirit completely.
One cool thing I noticed in the flashbacks with Flamme, is that the people are dressed in Romanesque style clothes. This makes sense since it was literally a thousand years earlier. So fashion and architecture would be from a different era.
My favourite part about this is the restraint. Frieren could have just blasted Aura with all kinds of flashy spells and win that way, but instead the writer was like "Nah, let's just show off her mana", save the flashy spells for another day.
One does not become the reason monsters have night lights by accident. Something to remember is that Aura compelled those who'd faced her to take their own heads by her command. She got her jollies on it. Frieren didn't enjoy it, it was just a task to get Aura to follow her own suggestion. That isn't cold, no matter how many people say it is- it poetic.
Thanks for the reaction! One aspect I loved about this episode is they give the punchline of the episode right at the beginning of the episode. We all know how it's going to end, yet the way they do the reveal is so satisfying.
The Demons and especially Aura were very good at reading when people where hiding their mana and confidence she got from that was the thing that did her in.
Flamme was/ is so wise and powerful ..plus, is one of my fav veteran seiyuu (Atsuko Tanaka ) I really love when she says in the flashback: " Frieren, just as demons deceive humankind with words,... you must use your mana to deceive demons" . I really like that alana is flying watching Frieren's episodes,. a t this pace you will catch the show,.. I cant wait to re watch 'em haha.
Little detail: while all the other time they showed us the mana "aura" like something that's just visual, when frieren finally released hers, it moved her hair, like it's a true force. We saw a lot of auras now, and she is the only that makes her hair move
Interesting to note this also gave us the first glimpse to Heiter's power level: Frieren was taught to show just a tenth of her mana that Heiter compares to be about a fifth of his own, so if we do the math it is an impressive mana for a mere mortal
One of the best self-contained singular episodes of the year. Tells the entire story of how Frieren started training her suppression of Mana and then seeing the payoff for that training.
I did. Me too. How can I not tear up at Frieren's glorious, loving Master, or her should-have-been lover Himmel, and the gaps between their moments and feelings?!?
YES I ALSO GOT SO EMOTIONAL AT EVERY PART YOU DID AUUGUHH i can't wait to see you watch the rest.. i love this show so much i am fighting DEMONS trying not to read the manga
9:59 this scene, In the past, Hero from South trying to recruit Frieren, but she refused, then he told her there will be someone will convinced her to take the Journey... Yes it's Himmel
The thing about this episode is, especially after the last episode, you think you're going to get a 10-minute, extremely beautifully animated battle between Frieren and Aura with Frieren overcoming Aura in the end. Instead what we got was a 20-minute (still extremely beautifully animated) exposition on why Aura had lost the battle with Frieren before it had even begun... and it was far better than if we had gotten that 10-minute battle. And it had "Aura, kill yourself" as a cherry on top of that beautiful episode - one of the coldest lines I've heard in any anime. And now that you've seen this episode, you should really check out the meme "Aura, kill yourself socially". Really funny.
the scenes showed Flamme fav spell is that flower spell and it inherited to future which makes Frieren still can use the spell to affect Himmel....the linkage is just so heartwarming....
So, were you expecting a big fight at the end, with flashy spells and beams flying around left and right? Well, this is actually so much better. An absolute epic episode with one of the most bad ass endings I've ever seen 😅 Btw, I love these Flamme flashback episodes so much, they always get me somehow so emotional.
This show is a masterpiece in storytelling. The montage after Flamme's death is ~56 seconds to the time where she meets Himmel. The flash montage after that is about half a second. That's 1% or the 10 year adventure compared to her 1000 year life. For me it's a metaphor for how Frieren perceives time.
One by detail that I’m not sure that you caught is that during the flashback in episode two, the spell that Himmel complimented which set set Frieren on her journey of collecting spells wasn’t just any old spell. It was the most important spell she knew, the last spell that Flamme, the legendary mage, ever taught her student: the spell to create a field of flowers.
We got a good sense of how old Frieren is over the course of the episodes up to this. In the discussions about Flamme and elves, you could conclude that Frieren was way older than Aura and probably closer to over 1000 even before she says this. Yes, good catch that Frieren now wears Flamme's earrings. When they introduced the scales, I'm like, yup. Aura's dead.
One easy to miss(because of everything else going on) is Flamme's admonition to Frieren to live in obscurity. Which is partly why she seems so hesitant to drop her name for things like getting through a border or getting out of jail.
Are you sure Fern learned suppression from Frieren? Remember what their meeting at the rock the first time was like... Frieren said she could barely sense her mana, but her control was amazing. Also, this is why in the previous episode, Aura believed Frieren was just some upstart who only came on the scene 100yrs ago, because Flamme told her to 'live in obscurity'.
In ep 2, you can see Frieren drawing a circle around Fern. That was one way she taught Fern to limit her mana to a smaller range. Fern is naturally good at concealment but Frieren taught her how to weaponise it for combat
what makes it more sad about Frieren's village, was because they posed a threat to the demons. Since Elves have long lifespans they could have easily beaten them in the future, but Elves are mostly peaceful here, until The demon ordered them to be exterminated. Them being so few already by that time to, makes it worse when they had no idea they would be wiped out... So Frieren took it in her own hands to wipe demons out.
I cry like . Multiple times in every episode . I can’t remember if I cried at the end of this one, but I have definitely cried at nearly every 5 minutes of the show. Haha
suppression of mana. Its the one thing demons gauge strength on. so suppress and look weak and then blast the demon scum. that's the entire premise of Flamme's and in extension frierens battle strategy to fight demons.
I loved this episode, but when the episode ends and the song starts with, "Are you alright?" It sounds like it's asking Aura, and I can't help but laugh
The slow montage of Frieren training alone to control her mana got to me 😢 Some other anime would have made a training montage as flashy as possible but here it is the opposite. It is slow, calming and emotional (and sad). But it hits and the emotional payoff is real. What a badass she is! This episode was so good! This episode sold me on this show 100%
Despite Aura's short appearance, she was popular enough to get 10th place on Japanese manga popularity poll for Frieren. Her cute character design probably a large factor. lol

Did you note how Aura didn't even have enough empathy in her to beg for mercy? Instead she whined about how she couldn't have lost - until she lost that ability as well.
emotions were HIGH this episode oh my goodness!!!

She really turned into a gamer for a sec xD
How Aura lost to Frieren and force to ends her own life was immensely satisfying, justice is served.
Someone made an Aura Violin special in RUclips and the whole avatar of her is so funny considering what happened
The “fuck, not Himmel” had me dying 😂😂
Frieren has Flamme's earrings on and also wrapped her necklace around her staff.

That got me right in the feels.

Yeah , and Flamme was just as blunt , and unwilling to show emotion as frieren . At least until she knew she was about to die
On August 20, Atsuko Tanaka, the voice actress who played the role of Flamme, passed away; she was 61 years old.😢
I always like to point out that frieren isn’t the overconfident type, and almost definitely knew that willpower could be used to resist. Her turning around and walking away meant that she was sure that she’d broken Aura’s spirit completely.

Flamme's VA passed 2 days ago. I absolutely loved her performance with this character, her voice was so soothing.
One cool thing I noticed in the flashbacks with Flamme, is that the people are dressed in Romanesque style clothes. This makes sense since it was literally a thousand years earlier. So fashion and architecture would be from a different era.
This is also why Frieren is always tired, Flamme said somewhere that hiding Mana takes a lot of energy
