The Flashbacks are so perfectly placed. This episode was flashback heavy, but those flashbacks were used as a set-up for the climatic reveal of the resolution. It was PERFECT.
This is what makes Frieren was so popular I guess. Because nobody likes 20 episodes of flashbacks and 3 episodes of the actual fighting scene. That is such a waste of storyline.

I remember that someone described this as an anime episode with perfect pacing, and I couldn't agree more.
Often anime will misuse flashbacks to try to make us care about a character with little development, but Frieren isn't doing that here. It's showing us why Flamme was the GOAT, how she thoroughly understood the psychology of monsters and humans alike, and how despite having a hard time understanding emotions Frieren will outsmart Aura by using her mentor's methods and win in the end.
The moment when Frieren releases her mana as the soundtrack crescendos always sends a chill down my spine, and that cold "kill yourself" is the icing on top of the cake.
"Frieren will outsmart Aura by using her mentor's methods and win in the end." she didn't use tat method to win, she did it to win efortlessly and himiliate Aura, but she would win regardless. if you did look exam arc or read the manga you know what i mean. Frieren could wipe Aura out of existence together with her whole army if she wanted to, but she didn't want to damage those corpses Aura control, because Himmel didn't like it.
That shot of flamme and Frieren in the shadows of the laundry with the scaling notes of the crescendo is just chefs kiss perfect

In episode 2 Frieren was drawing a circle around Fern while teaching her, which ,now after the last 2 episodes, we understood why - to teach Fern how much to suppress her mana.
And another thing - the montage when Frieren grows is 50 seconds. Afterwards there is quick succession of 4 frames which are 0.5 seconds - proportion 1/100 just like her adventure was 1/100 of her life

@@ydziros Yes she was, as we will understand in next episode. But the amount of mana which to be seen by others was part of this scene in episode 2. Also, Lugner in the beginning of this episode saw exactly the same amount as was the size of the circle.
@@ydziros you have to go back to that episode where their carriage got carried by a monster bird. When frieren was talking about how humans can't modify the flying spell because they just copied it. Basically like math, you can copy your classmates answers but you dont know how to do the formula.
Heiter already taught Fern to suppress her mana but it was Frieren who actually taught her the fundamentals. Now Fern is basically an expert of it, maybe not as good as frieren but enough to deceive the observer.
I'm chapter 160+ on the manga and as far as I can remember It was never said out loud. But this is what the Author is very good at - Show, dont tell. Their just giving us pieces of the puzzle, the fun begins in figuring how thy fit together. - Lowkey why lego is such a popular toy.
Frieren may have been helping her practice but she wasn't the one who taught Fern how to suppress her mana, that would be Heiter.
Remember the first conversation she had with Fern in episode 1? Fern all but admits she's doing it then.... "Heiter often tells me I'm practically invisible. It's a very good thing, isn't it?"
There is another hint as well but I don't want to spoil anything. The only reason I mentioned this clue is because it happened back in the first episode.

Frieren is arguably the best fantasy anime I’ve ever seen.
Getting to see other people enjoy it the way I did puts a massive smile on my face.
We can see how much Frieren HATES demons, so she makes a point of killing them in the most humiliating/ironic was possible, usually with their own techniques.
-With Qual she starts by basically telling him "You know that legendary killing magic you spent your entire existence developing? Well, thanks to me, humans now calling 'ordinary offensive magic' and this girl could cast it when she was six. Ya basic. Now I'm going to kill you with a supped up version I created especially to kill demons."
-With Draht she's super dismissive "oh no...what ever will I do..." "Really? that was enough to make you feel special? Wow, modern demons are hopeless"
Then she uses a cutting technique herself to cut off his hands and then specifically destroys his neck, like he tried to do.
-And of course with Aura turning her spell against her and forcing "the Guillotine" to behead herself.
For Frieren it's not enough to kill them she wants to BREAK them first.
well, too bad she not going to do it the same way after that. later in manga she just kill them, nothing special.
Well, the "The Guillotine to behead herself" is a bit wrong.
Frieren doesn't say to behead her or something similar, she just said kill, which Aura could probably do by using her other offensive magic. It is Aura's own choice to kill herself by beheading, because that is the way a Guillotine kill people.
But yeah, I just realized the Draht one. Normally one would say, "pretty f'ed up". But nah, he is bad and overconfident
She could kill Draht without cutting his hands, but she had to cut his hands first and then his neck. She hates them that much.

The thing with Aura, we learned that demons are extremely prideful beings. Basically, Frieren didn't even allow Aura the honor of being killed by the legendary mage that killed demon king. I'd imagine it's the worst way to die for demons
Now you also know why Frieren was used to seeing her master beg for her life. Flamme carried that "deceive demons" thing all the way through!

Also because Frieren faced so many Einsam like monsters in her life, with Flamme begging. Perhaps Flamme training her too to resist her begging.

someone previously mentioned that frieren's sense of irony is some dark ass humor. Of the 3 demons she's killed up to this episode, qual was killed by his own killer spell, draht was killed by his own spell magic wires and crushing of his neck, aura the guillotine was killed using her own mind control power of the scales and commanded to behead herself.

I loved you talking about how well this show does flashbacks right before starting "The episode that is almost entirely perfectly done flashbacks". I love that instead of having an epic brawl like Fern and Stark, Frieren just gets an entire episode using flashbacks to explain why there was not even going to be a fight, and that Aura was just going to die from a trap set a thousand years ago.

The show does the flashbacks very well. Each one has so much meaning and the only show I've seen do it well off the bat and make it work well as part of it's storytelling is LOST. This was such a great arc where we learn more about the world they live in and getting so much of Flamme. Someone else commented that's why Frieren sleeps in late, because constantly suppressing her mana tires her out a bit, even now.

They aren't your typical flashback, they are Frieren remembering them.
Its like that famous proverb "You live as long as you are remembered".
Himmel, Eisen and Heiter is essentially immortalized through Frieren. Now Fern and Stark and all the people she met along the way is now also immmortalized through Frieren.
One detail I love is that during the flashbacks with Flamme, their clothes and the architecture are all Greco-Roman style instead of medieval like the rest of the series, because it takes place 1000 years earlier.
Seen this episode so many times and it still hits so good through the whole thing.
The show hid fern's power from us which made us underestimate her. Gives you some perspective on how the demons felt.
well, surprise, it does the same with Frieren's powers too. ppl who saw EP 25-26 knows some terrifying shit about that surprise-box elf...
I'd like to point out that when aura's head flies, we see her perspective: Frieren walking away. She doesn't even look back.

This episode is easily my favorite of the entire show. It's so good. Frieren telling Flamme that she knew she was a strong mage because "Just a feeling" then Himmel telling her that same thing was so good. Same with Frieren being asked if she likes magic and her response is "Somewhat" just like Fern's response when Frieren asked her that early in the show.
It's all so good
And knowing how much Friren is tied to her memories, it becomes very clear that the only reason she even agreed to travel with Himmel is because he reminded her of her master. It's a very tiny detail that is easily missed... but makes so much sense the more of the show you have seen.
8:07 this is why Frieren is so sleepy all the time. she's constantly supressing her mana, and it makes her tired. this show is great at dropping answers like that and barely drawing attention to them

that's my assumptions too. but if suppressing mana is the cause of frieren being always sleepy then why does it not apply to fern if fern is also doing the same thing as frieren. maybe fern is just too talented that suppressing her mana is also engraved in her being since she was born like with zoltraak.

That "kill yourself" is one of the coldest fucking lines ever. Goosebumps
The ending of this episode just never gets any less amazing to me. We just learned the double meaning of "Sousou no Frieren" in Japanese like 2-3 episodes ago, and now the way she takes out Aura reminds us what Frieren means in German - Frozen - just in case we got too comfortable thinking of her as adorable and silly. There is ice in her dainty elf veins.
ice in veins and a black hole in the pockets... imagine Fern's face in that moment in EP 26... ah, wait, her face is almost always the same, so nvm. i mean, i doubt Fern saw those spells before. if i was learing from her for most of my life and thought i know her good enough, and then saw THAT, it would scare the soul out of me...

One of the best anime show has ever made, great storyline.
Yeah it was a huge thing that she left her name out of the history books until the right time. If the demons started catching even a whiff of the trick than it would all be worthless. The demon king wouldn't have stopped hunting for her and would have sent a force to end her and in all likelihood the the heroes party journey might have ended elsewhere. Let's not forget that one of the sages was too strong and had to be turned to stone until his spell and magic could be understood, what would have happened if they knew she was suppressing her mana to that extent. Would she and the others have survived if two or three of the sages joining up against them?
well, surprise, in EP 27 Serie said demon king was able to see through her concealing mana. also she did fight demons before Himmel's party. 600 years ago she meet Macht and had too flee due to him being too strong and turned her hand in gold(its his curse) and she had to spend 100 years after that to lift that curse(which is what NOBODY did before and even after her, even Serie said it hopeless when Macht used that curse on the Denken's hometown).
With this episode, I realized that in the third episode, had Fern and Frieren focused only on defense, they probably could exhaust Qual, assuming he is much younger than Frieren.
(By the way, just a note here to remind everyone : concealing mana isn't a disgrace fo magic, but concealing mana while fighting another mage is. Lügner and Demon General 1000 years ago will and have conceal their mana when going stealth for a surprise attack)

The only thing that could have made those scenes any better in my opinion was when Frieren showed her mana was to have a shot of Fern looking over in that direction. Not that it needed it, but just a small 'holy shit' moment.
Actually 2 of the 7 sages of destruction .freiren has taken out 1) Qual in ep3 now aura in ep 10 so maybe 5 to go in total
actually 3, with her party they killed Bose the immortal. he was specializing in barriers and catched them in his barrier. they couldn't escape and Frieren didn't know what to do, so Himmel and Eisen gave her some moral support and Heiter buffed them all so they don't need food or water for 2 months. Frieren analised his barrier and dispelled it and then they killed Bose.

Qual isn't part of the 7 Stages of Destruction.
He is an Elder Sage of Destruction. He is basically their senior.

Frieren has been following flammes teaching to its core even after 1000 year.... She still suppress it around 1/10 because aura deduce Frieren mana should be around 100 year... But that only show that heiter has actually the same amount of mana as Aura ffs XD...dude has half of Frieren's mana when they 1st meet ...

decreacing it to 1/10 of full was Frierenst FIRST TRAINING, its a very noob level. look at the Flame flashback, her visible mana shown in vilage when Frieren said that Flame is far more powerful mage, and full mana shown after she killed 3 demon mages. its by far not 1/10 already. and Flame was like what, 30+? do you really think Frieren after 1000 years of training that skill still shows 1/10 of her mana?
her full mana(if its really full mana, who knows, she's a fckn surprise-box) shown at the end of episode. if she would show even 1/10 of that, no demon would ever come close to her. Lugner and other two would fckn run away and prob shit themself in EP 7 the moment they saw her. but instead Draht was trying to kill her and he was even doubt she stronger than him, not to mention Aura. Lugner was thinking she had less mana than Aura, while her full mana shown being nowhere near comparable to Aura's.

frieren aura was actually smaller but it did show it is still bigger than aura to show she is indeed has live over 1000 year... Aura a damn Sage saw frieren with a mana worth atleast 100 year...frieren is 1000 year...100 year/1000 year=1/10=1/10 mana suppresion...u cant connect both of those point even after it was pointed out in this episode? the way frieren showed here is different from the manga because Keiichirou Saitou the legendary director decided to go beyond the manga to show frieren strength and it works, if u dont know who Keiichirou Saitou is then u wouldnt understand his work.
