I think it depends. If you can find comfort or even purpose in philosophy or parables, stories can heal you. If you cannot, stories are mostly escapism from an inescapable reality and cannot heal you, only practical solutions can and existential fears (which are part of what Frieren touches upon) rarely have any solutions.
the producer of the show said when he read chapter 1 of the manga, he cried and felt there is something changed inside him. And I love how he gather all of the talented people on the studio to just show us and let us feel what he felt on chapter 1 by seriously crafting one of the best art, music and story in modern anime. They did Frieren justice.

I particularly like how they imply Frieren's perspective on time by drawing out some scenes, and montaging others like with this show where the seasons were passing literally at the blink of an eye then suddenly 50 years have come and gone.
This quickly became my favorite anime of all time. It boggles my mind how the characters become so developed and important to you in the span of about 10 minutes. Masterful storytelling in every way! I hope you enjoy the show! It gets so much better, although I know that doesn't make sense at the moment, because that is an amazing first episode. You care so much for the characters, immediately.

In Taiwan a random guy protected the passengers of the train he was on from a knife attack. I think he actually got cut on the face. When he was asked why he protected those people he answered “It’s what Himmel would have done.” That is how good this anime/mange is written and how much impact it has.
Ever since I read about that guy in the news it always warms my heart even more when I think about Frieren and the impact it had or has! It is really just so heartwarming and inspiring

This show feels so different from what we've been getting for the past 10 years or so. Every character looks beautiful. Side characters are not useless tools without a brain. The show has an old feel but it's fresh at the same time. Everything about it was done with love for the story and the world.

Nah man. Vinland has a bigger message than Frieren. Frieren says appreciate the time here with your loved ones but Vinland says violence is not the answer. And given the world we live in, I feel Vinland's message is more important. Both are exceptional shows though.

Frieren is my favorite anime that I've watched in YEARS and I am so excited for you guys to watch it! Especially after how much of a banger your JJK reacts were! Haylo getting emotional gets me every time! 😭
Something I love about this show is that it showcases the dark realities of life and hardships, but it also showcases the good and lightheartedness of life too. It's not super dark that it's depressing but also not too naive about how the world works either. It's a middle ground that I really love.
I’m late to this watch party but I remember commenting in the announcement for this shows reaction that these two lovely ladies would cry a lot in this show and the first episode didn’t let me down 😆
There is SO much about this anime to love, but even in the first episode the director manages to elevate it above the manga (which was already great). In the manga, Himmel's funeral takes place entirely within the cathedral, but the director decided to move part of that scene outdoors in the anime. That allowed him to hit us with a series of memories flashing by with no music, only Frieren's breaking voice and the rhythmic sound of dirt being shoveled onto Himmel's coffin. It's SO powerful, and that's the kind of storytelling you can expect from this show. You're going to love it. Thanks for sharing the journey with us. ❤

It's probably too late to say this, since you probably watched this days or weeks ago (I have no clue on turnaround time for editing) but the first four episodes go together almost like a pilot movie, then things really start to move. Happy you're watching this. Frieren is probably the best written anime I've seen. Like, technically speaking. The dialogue is refined and meaningful - there aren't many empty words or conversations. The show also doesn't over-explain situations or characters' feelings - there's a good amount of subtext and "show, don't tell". It's also pretty down-to-earth and doesn't lean on tropes. While it's wonderfully heartwarming and contemplative, the actual writing itself is what impressed me the most.
I'm glad y'all are starting Frieren. I just finished it back in July and I loved it. Can't wait to see your reactions to this show and now I can come home and expect a video of this and One Piece from Monday to Friday.

So the title of the show in Japanese has three meanings you'll see throughout the show. First is the one you see in the title card, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Second is Frieren at the Funeral, and I won't spoil the third. The thing is, all three use Sousou no Frieren as the verbal component.

I’m sure someone else has said this already: pretty much all the names of characters and places are based on German words. My daughter “forced” me to watch this series and always asked what the translation was, usually she thought they were very fitting. Frieren = freezing Fern = far away Himmel = heaven, or sky Heiter = happy, jovial Eisen = iron

This is not a show you need to recover from, it's a show that heals you more and more with every episode

I’m sure someone else has said this already: pretty much all the names of characters and places are based on German words. My daughter “forced” me to watch this series and always asked what the translation was, usually she thought they were very fitting.
Frieren = freezing
Fern = far away
Himmel = heaven, or sky
Heiter = happy, jovial
Eisen = iron
