The 'final meet' in this and '5 centimeters per second' are glorious in their respective ways and pretty widely known. I would love to add the 'First Love' (2022, the one with Takeru Satoh) and the Korean 'Yeopgijeogin geunyeo' (aka 'My sassy girl', 2001) to the conversation.
It's funny I didn't know it was the same director. I watched 5 centimeters back in college and then just a couple years ago watched your name. When they were walking past each other before the final scene I thought of that movie and thought it would end the same way. When they did the little extra bit after the cut to black and brought them together I was uncontrollably suffering from emotional whiplash and fulfillment. Felt like the Grinch on Christmas with my old jaded heart growing

You know, despite this being an animated movie, humans recognize humans. They cheer each other on. They aim at love. They cry for love. They smile for love. Especially women, I mean just look at how many women in this video are bawling their eyes out over two 2D animated characters finding love. It's really adorable and beautiful.
They don't get bumped. It's they don't submit. Every actor/actress/film has to submit their work "for your consideration" and then voters vote. The top voted are the "nominations." The Academy members don't just watch randomly or find something they like and vote. It's a formal process and unfortunately they didn't submit. The director however DID submit his next movie for the Oscars

This movie hit you hard but have a happy ending. However , 5 centímeters per second just hit you hard.

日本以外の作品なら階段で再会した瞬間に走って駆け寄って𝑯𝑼𝑮 & 𝑲𝑰𝑺𝑺でもしてるんだろうけど、日本人はこんな時ですら(違う人かもしれないよな……)みたいなシャイというか遠慮というか、感情を表に出すことに抵抗を持ってる感じがすごく良く表しててそれでいて最後ハッピーエンドで終わらしてくれるからまじ最高なんよな
