While I always disliked Cliff so much, and loved it when JR knocked him down to the dirt, this scene was so devastating for him. I did feel bad for Cliff. He truly loved his sister. Her decision to not go back to Dallas and to not tell Bobby, Christopher and Cliff that she only had weeks to live was a hard and very personal decision for Pam. But I think it was only hers to make.
I hated the way Victoria Principal ended the show. Pam, never would have abandoned Christopher. This is a very touching scene and you can see how deeply moved Cliff was.
Yes, when Linda Gray announced she was leaving, she made sure that Sue Ellen left with a bang with her head high. Principal should've at least done the same thing, or hung around long enough so Pam can get a send off that she deserved, like founding Mark Graison again, actually had a baby and decided to leave Southfork to live in peace...ANYTHING but THIS.
In the new Dallas it was discovered that the reason Pam didn’t go back was because she found out she had pancreatic cancer and didn’t want her family to go through losing her again. It was found out that she died just a few months after this.
It is terrible, but at the same time, Victoria was experiencing a lot of back problems and it was hard for her to act. It's never easy to write off somebody from a show like that.
This whole scene was ridiculous! I was not exactly a Cliff Barnes fan, but not even he deserved this. This was way too much. And I think this show was wrong for killing off Victoria Prinicpal? I know I am no longer the same person I once was before the death of my own spouse. Plus I no longer have the same beliefs and outlooks on life that I once had.
The problem I had with Pam's exit storyline was it was so out of character for Pam. Pam leaves town and files for divorce and Bobby never once questioned it or tried to track her down to talk to her face to face. He just accepted it and said to the family, "we'll never talk about Pam again" and moved on with his life.
Exactly, this was beyond ridiculous. As if Bobby wouldn't investigate the disappearance of the love of his life any further and sign the divorce papers just like that. Didn't he care what happened to her. She could have been kidnapped by Katherine or anyone else for that matter.
And also Cliff didn’t fight her decision - that simply isn’t Cliff. He’s like a dog with a bone when there is something he wants... and he just gave up... so sad 😭 I wish this actress had taken on the role x

This was the dumbest storyline--why not just RECAST Pam?! After being abandoned by her own mother and her struggle to have a child, and finally having Christopher, there’s no way Pam would desert her son and her brother.

Losing Victoria Principal was clearly what began to truly break _Dallas_ however if producers had been smart, they would've kept Margaret Michaels on as Pamela. It was rough loosing Pam and more importantly Victoria Principal, but apparently she was ready to move on. I wonder if more money and a better storyline would’ve changed her mind..?
@@jazmorrison9030Actually, I remember Pam offering to buy Cliff's share of Ewing Oil for $200 million while it was still in litigation. All three siblings were set for life after Rebecca Wentworth died.
I agree! Pam wanted a child so badly so how can she just willingly leave that child that she wanted so badly I mean it makes no sense and another I thought made no sense is why have her go to the doctor and find out she can carry a baby till term just to have her get into that accident which eventually caused her to leave that child that she had, the only child she had in the first place I mean it makes no sense at all none of it does but I think the show was going down the tubes ever sense Patrick Duffy left and then the way they brought him back and it just kept going down hill from there ever sense. I think the show was about at an end before it actually ended I actually surprised it lased as long as it did.
A. Pam would never let her family think that she has abandoned them to save them from the pain of her dying. She’s smart enough to know that it would be healthier for her child to lose her through death than through abandonment. B. Cliff is smart enough to know that something is up here. Even if you accept the premise that Pam has fallen in love with her doctor, he knows that Pamela would NEVER abandon her son (especially since their own mother abandoned them). And he would at least say, “OK - so you’re not coming back to Dallas. Why does this mean that our relationship is over? Tell me what’s really going on.”

@@jaredjlinden that’s the difference between a story that is plot driven and one that is character driven. If the story was written with what the characters would do based on what is already established in regards to their personalities, Pam would never just leave.
I can't believe that Cliff just let it go at that without really no exception like why are you doing this? How can you just abandon your own child, a child you yourself clamed you wanted so bad and especially how can you with all heart abandon your own child when you yourself knows what that's like? What's really going on? I think Pam at least owed Cliff that much sense she planed on casting him and the rest of her family especially the child she calmed to love and wanted so badly out of the remainder of her life I mean Pam just made no sense, you would think because she's dying she'd want to be with her family for the remainder of the time she's got left not want to be away from them but then the Pam character never made any sense, it never made any sense to me why she kept leaving Bobby whenever things got too tough for Pam to handle and a lot of times it had to do with J.R. trying to break the two of them up but by running off all she was doing was letting him win and the time when her half-sister came into the picture by leaving Bobby then all she was doing was setting herself up to lose Bobby forever to her half-sister. I mean Yes! She's had problems, she was abandoned by her mother when she was a child, we all have of some sort but we all don't go leaving our husbands when things get too tough to handle but I don't know maybe her accident was a good thing to have happened cause it got Little Miss Runaway When Things Get Too Tough To Handle Pam out of Bobby's life for good now he can get somebody else that wouldn't do that shit to him every time you turn around I mean maybe if the accident had never happened, maybe things would have been different I mean who's really to say, they had been through a lot together this time I mean they didn't have just J.R. to deal with this last time but also Pam's half-sister Katherine who was trying to get her mits onto Bobby I mean it's different when they have had just J.R. to deal with but this last time when they were broke up it wasn't just J.R. that was in on braking them up but also one other person, Katherine.
after the Donna Reed/Miss Ellie debacle - quickly followed by the Wes Parmalee nonsense - producers were wary about how to deal with the Pam resolution - and made a complete mess of it.
This scene was totally unrealistic of Pam. The producers were obviously in a jam and avoided killing Pam off instantly to leave the door open for VP to return especially after Bobby's death dream. But VP wanted a clean break and had no intention of returning which left producers with a real headache as Pam would never abandon her family. Hence they cooked up this terrible twist. VP was way too iconic to re cast Pam . I dont think viewers would have taken to MM or anyone else in the role.

Deep down, Pam was actually very selfish. Whatever anyone says, she always put her own wants before Bobby's and Christopher's. I get why she didn't want to return to Southfork but they deserved to know the truth.
I'll never understand why Dallas couldn't have cast Margaret Michaels as Pam..Slight difference but after a crash like that, it would have been better story..
i agree 1000 percent... VP is Pam Ewing...but they should have a given a replacement a try ..and plus at this point souring viewers anymore would have not been too risky. (a lot viewers were disgruntled and stopped watching after the entire 85-86 season was written off as Bobbys dream) ..the ratings had already dropped the previous season (86-87) because of this as well ...
@@greggbarnette5316 They made two attempts with this actress but the fans were rooting more for Bobby to move on than a recast and April was the choice. No way could anyone else have played Pam!
Mr Bigfan April could never replace Pam and fans are fickle. They should’ve stick with the recast and paired her with new characters. Built a whole new storyline with Bobby on the fringes looking in, developing her relationship with Christopher.
In a way this scene rings true. Pam always had the flight or fight response when it came to hardship in her life. Remember when she threatened to kill herself when she couldn’t have a baby by standing on a ledge? Plus Pam and Bobby’s relationship was always plagued by pride and misunderstandings, specifically their divorce and then this their biggest obstacle. I can buy in a way Pam not wanting to be seen while recovering from a massive fireball (kind of dumb they didn’t kill her off in 1987 but they left the door open for her to return, if you’ve seen that tanker scene no one could survive that), and wanting to heal and do it on your own, but Bobby’s pride and stupidity was too much surrounding all this. He never once thought of looking for her, a woman pumped up on all kinds of pain drugs, and further traumatized by being disfigured and having no one around to support her (Pam’s choice but still), clearly not in her right mind. As far as recasting her, two words. Donna Reed. The producers didn’t want to go through this again. They always hoped Victoria would come back. But there are ways to get around this, specifically in the TNT version. Pam is alive and well and lives off screen. But then that would satisfy me, other viewers would want to see her. I don’t think we will ever see Dallas again in our lifetimes, but the only way to lay the where’s Pam question to rest, with no more expectation, was to kill her off.
@@worldsokayestflightattendant agreed lol. Dallas really got stupider starting when they wrote off an entire season as a dream. Even if she survived the initial impact, it would’ve taken minimum 10 or 15 minutes for paramedics and an ambulance to get there. She wouldve been severely burned and in horrible shape, or most likely dead. Much worse then what happened. Look what happened to Anne Heche and she still ended up dying. But they wanted a good cliffhanger out of it, that’s what they got. Divorcing Bobby and leaving town would’ve been the smart move. Victoria disliked the writing after her first five years. I’m sure she was relieved to get the hell out of there. But they really disrespected the character with all this nonsense.
Under normal circumstances Pam never would have left Bobby or Christopher but it wasn't exactly normal circumstances because she may not have been thinking straight after the car accident.Plus after learning she had cancer she may not have wanted them to watch her die and grieve for her all over again.
Yes, many of burn scars are already seen in her face. Unfortunately this was a terrible accident, and that's a miracle that even her survived this explosion and third degree burns. But I think too that the cast could recast Pam's character by Margaret Michaels to the end of the series.
Also, I can't even imagine what went through in her mind when she first saw her face after the doctors remove the bandage from her. That could be terrible sight for her :(
@@Peteerh they tried to see if that would work and it didn't. Overall the fans were not happy with a possible recast and preferred to see Bobby move on. I for one rooted for him and April within the first few episodes of season 11.
And her raspy voice is perfect because it explains the problem that happened with the explosion to her trachea changing her voice. It actually seemed to work and was realistic and also yes, she looked a lot like Pam I would have accepted her, and Pam would’ve never left them even though Mark did the same thing to her. That is especially why she would never do that.
This absurd story still could have a happy ending with VP playing Pam one more time. I actually heard a VP interview where she said she would have come back for the series finale if Leonard Katzman would have guaranteed her that it was indeed the last episode of the series. He couldn’t do so b/c CBS hadn’t made the final decision to end the show when the last episode was being produced. After it was shot, CBS cancelled the show which is why the series literally ended on a cliffhanger. In hindsight, if CBS had told Katzman that there would be no season 14, I’m sure he would have wrapped it up in a satisfying manner. All he had to do was have VP show up at Southfork and knock on the door and when he opens it have Pam say “hello Bobby”. Then, show the final credits. We all know how their story would have ended.

I am sure Victoria Principal had her reasons for leaving Dallas. But they should have come up with a better storyline. Pam would never have abandoned Christopher or left Bobby. This was the worst storyline of all for Dallas.
I will never understand the writing after the accident and Victoria leaving. She and Bobby went through all that trouble getting a baby for her, not to mention all the trouble Bobby put himself into with getting their son illegally in the beginning. And Pam doesn’t feel she doesn’t owe that little boy or Bobby any kind of explanation is just selfish and unbelievable to me…
The coldness of Pam to Cliff (and Christopher and Bobby) wasn't believable. But what was even more ridiculous was when Bobby saw the Pam lookalike in later episodes and said she looked just like Pam did after her surgery. It was ridiculous because Bobby never saw Pam after the surgery!!!
@@mainlymusicman When Bobby showed her to Cliff, Cliff said she looked just like Pam AFTER the surgery. So she obviously looked very different, therefore, it still made no sense that Bobby would said she looked just like Pam. Bobby even showed her a picture of Pam and she said "That's me!!"
@@citygirl5705 i dont think you can directly apply the obvious difference between the new actress playing Pam and Victoria principal as the same difference Bobby sees when he sees her. you basically have to assume that pam still looked somewhat like pam after the accident - to Bobby. we dont really have a gauge of how pam's appearance changed because it was a totally different actress. the effects of burns on someone's face would not be to the extent of making them look like a totally different person.
Really bad exit - we should have seen Pam pass when she was in the automobile crash . The producers should have known nobody but Victoria could play that role . and then to hint that Pam was alive for the DALLAS reboot ... ugh

Yeah like this life is so great. Maybe for you and you along with others do not speak for people like myself. It truly amazes me how so many people are afraid of death. For some people living is suffering. Death brings peace for those who have suffered horribly in this lifetime.
I love how on all these soap operas the character has a disfiguring accident; where they have plastic surgery...And then they have a new actor playing the role
Why wasn't the deadly disease discovered when she found out she was pregnant? Why was he written out of the series like that? She would rather have married Mark! Jenna was bad with Ray. No chemistry. Pamela would never have left Christopher there when she was crazy for a child!
They wanted Principal to come back to the latest reincarnation of the series, but she just drop dead refused no matter how much money they offered her. I have to hand it to her . . the story was over and she thought it was ridiculous. Of all the flying off the wall hippocracy in Dallas; "Pamela Ewing's" was so profound and outrageous; I hated her the same way people hated JR. Maybe the show would have worked if she came back.
Frankly, as a young child, I didn’t think Pam survived the crash. I think that after the controversy of the “dream season”, I think Dallas opted to not kill her off, in case Victoria made the decision to to return, as Patrick had. It just prompted this to be such a bizarre storyline. Which was unnecessary, and too similar to what you’d expect from some daytime soap opera.
When the episode first aired, I thought Pam would come back because that night on the local news, they interviewed Margaret Michaels as the new Pam. But then the show never mentioned the fate of Pam again (until the 2012 reboot). But Michaels came back the next season as Pam lookalike Jeanne and Bobby got to say goodbye to Pam once and for all
@@radrobd123 But how was there no reference of Cliff seeing this woman if she is the same one he saw in Canada in Season 12? All he can say when she comes to Dallas is she is the spitting image of Pam. They treated it as if Cliff never took that trip!

She really does resemble Victoria Principal especially the eyes. I’m sure they matched her hair color & make up too but it does a pretty good job of making her believable as Pam after plastic surgery. I was little at the time so my knowledge was from my parents viewing & discussing it but if i remember correctly they didn’t think fans would accept anyone but Victoria as Pam for the longterm so they wrote this to give an out to Pam’s character not returning but also a way that could’ve survived if they got Victoria to return down the road
The producers should have replaced Victoria with Margaret Michaels as Pam as soon as she left the show to make it as seamless as possible for the fans. That was huge mistake on their part, IMHO. They lost a lot of viewership because of this, not just because of the "Dream Season" without Bobby, then suddenly coming back the following season. I believe the series would have lasted much longer beyond 1991 if it weren't for those two hiccups. Dallas was never the same after 1987. It lost most of its credibility among viewers.
Kind of Ironic Dr. Gordon would be the first name of Gordon Cahill, father to Alex Cahill, and the girl with Cliff was APril Stephens before Alex Cahill.
Dallas after Bobby came back ( I realize that it was the ONLY way for Bobby to return, for it to be all a dream) but after Victoria Principal left, they knew that no amount of money would have made her return to the role. The writers as the show went on, became weak and ridiculous. They sadly turned the JR character into another Cliff Barnes. Proof is how they ended the series.. It was no longer the greatest drama in history, it became a shell of its former self. They teased us with the fact that VP would come back.
I, really, dislike making this comment, about my favourite dramatic series but, I don't know how Ken Kercheval was able to keep a straight face, throughout this scene; just, not believable/credible/satisfying, for a viewer.

@@karenconnor6682 And I especially didn’t like how they brought this actress Margaret Michaels to play a Pam look a like to put closure . Even though Victoria Principal was missed, I could have accepted Margaret Michaels. She had enough physical resemblance. It is too bad Jeanne O'Brien did not turn out to be her.
That would've been awesome
This was the dumbest storyline--why not just RECAST Pam?! After being abandoned by her own mother and her struggle to have a child, and finally having Christopher, there’s no way Pam would desert her son and her brother.
They tried several times to get Victoria back but she refuses to return....even after that scene they didnt show Pam die they had still the hope that at some point Victoria would return thats why they never recast.

Losing Victoria Principal was clearly what began to truly break _Dallas_ however if producers had been smart, they would've kept Margaret Michaels on as Pamela. Yes, she matched the look Principal had, and they could have continued on with the plastic surgery storyline, and that the trauma of the experience changed Pamela in ways that made her harder. Instead, they did what they did and it was just bad.

Cliff was very emtional he really loved his sister very moving
The fact that she kept wanting a child and willfully ditched her son makes zero sense.
It's a fictional TV Show. Not reality.
Pam would have never been that cold blooded but after Linda grey departed the show went down hill...
You don't know that for certain. People do change sometimes. Especially after a traumatizing event.
Tell me what’s really going on.”
it's called "Fictional Writing". Not the real way life actually works.
It’s called “Bad Fictional Writing.” “Good Fictional Writing” is also often not the way life actually works, but isn’t so unbelievable that you have a whole thread full of people questioning it.

The show went downhill after this. I never understood why they didn't just get this lady to play Pam. She looked enough like her, voice was close, the story line was set up for her to have a new face, why not? They didn't give a damn about recasting on Dynasty, it worked (mostly).
i cant see any other face being pam
The only Dynasty recast that wasn’t a total disaster was Steven, and some people didn’t even accept that. The recast Fallon and Amanda were awful.
how Pam's character ended was stupid. Pam may have felt it was for the best but Her son never got over being abandoned
Deep down, Pam was actually very selfish. Whatever anyone says, she always put her own wants before Bobby's and Christopher's. I get why she didn't want to return to Southfork but they deserved to know the truth.
So who is this actress?
Margaret Michaels.
Fake Pam looks like real one.
They should’ve brought Margaret Michaels for a cameo with Christopher in the new Dallas
Very similar, it would have been a very believable recast. The final 3 seasons would have been MUCH better, with this Pam
Do we have these scenes from the HD remaster, possibly?
Can u improve the volume? I can't hear it very well.
I also always thought that, thier is no way anyone could survive the truck tanker explosion
My gosh the damn thing blew up.
Glad to see this storyline carry over to Dallas 2012
And w3 finally got th3 answ3r w3 await3d too
Pam would not of wanted to lose bobby again or give up christopher
Under normal circumstances Pam never would have left Bobby or Christopher but it wasn't exactly normal circumstances because she may not have been thinking straight after the car accident.Plus after learning she had cancer she may not have wanted them to watch her die and grieve for her all over again.
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn this is sad.
Dallas went through and portrayed every facet of the human experience!
If you look at Pam's face at 3:40 you can still see some of the burn scars on her face
That could be terrible sight for her :(
@@Peteerh Nothing went through her mind. Pamela Ewing is fictional.
And then this actress returned as a Pam lookalike in a later season.
Didn't she play a realtor Bobby looked at houses with?
@@maineindividual5202 Yes, that's the same character. Bobby saw her in public while he was having dinner with Phyllis one evening, then did some digging, found out she was a realty agent, then tracked her down and uses the buying houses thing as an excuse to meet her.

I think margaret michaels would have suffered "your not victoria principal" syndrome if she had taken on the role full time. she does have a striking resemblance, but fans simply not wanting pam to die wouldnt have been enough in the end and she would have ended up like donna reed
But Margaret Michaels was great on the daytime soap "Santa Barbara" when she played Santana Andrade!
Plus she was on an episode of Charlie's Angels in season 4
I am sure Victoria Principal had her reasons for leaving Dallas. But they should have come up with a better storyline. Pam would never have abandoned Christopher or left Bobby. This was the worst storyline of all for Dallas.
I think Cliff really wanted to cry when Pam told to forget he ever had a sister and to live his own life he wanted for her come back home with him.
It brok3 his h3art
I think Dr Gordon had diagnosed Pam with cancer here.
I think so too
He did, she had pancreatic cancer, she died 9 months after this scene, in June 1989. Explained in TNTs reboot.
I will never understand the writing after the accident and Victoria leaving. She and Bobby went through all that trouble getting a baby for her, not to mention all the trouble Bobby put himself into with getting their son illegally in the beginning. And Pam doesn’t feel she doesn’t owe that little boy or Bobby any kind of explanation is just selfish and unbelievable to me…
How can she leave her son.
The coldness of Pam to Cliff (and Christopher and Bobby) wasn't believable.
But what was even more ridiculous was when Bobby saw the Pam lookalike in later episodes and said she looked just like Pam did after her surgery. It was ridiculous because Bobby never saw Pam after the surgery!!!
i think he just thought she looked like pam , not necessarily pam after the surgery
@@mainlymusicman When Bobby showed her to Cliff, Cliff said she looked just like Pam AFTER the surgery.

Dang. Why couldn't this actress have taken on the roll for Pam and kept her character on as a regular. Hmmm.
She sounds like she is in pain when she talks!
Pam was badly burned and her larnyx suffered considerable smoke damage
Really bad exit - we should have seen Pam pass when she was in the automobile crash . The producers should have known nobody but Victoria could play that role .
and then to hint that Pam was alive for the DALLAS reboot ... ugh

Still don’t see why Margaret Michaels didn’t take over the role of Pam… Pam was too important a character to leave the show…
Why couldn't they hire this actor to replace Victoria on a full time basis while they work on a better exit for the character if they didn't wanna keep Pam anymore?
She's the Great Value Victoria Principal
She was blessed to be alive
Agreed since 60% of her body suffered 3rd degree burns
Ken doesn't get the credit he's due!
Margaret Michaels who played this Pam, also played Pam lookalike Jean the estate agent who Bobby had a fascination with.
They should've killed off Pam in the 1st episode of the 11th season
This actress is a dead ringer for Victoria Principal. Perhaps she could have continued the role of Pam. Bring back Pam in some crazy twist.

Actress that play Pam leave the show? Why did she leave Bobby and her son John Ross
One thing about Cliff, he always loved his sister.
She was good enough to play Pam, and continued the saga
Pam knew by then she had pancreatic cancer.
It lost most of its credibility among viewers.
i dont know if i can continue watching dallas after this... is it even worth finishing without pam?..
Ken was a remarkable actor!
Kind of Ironic Dr. Gordon would be the first name of Gordon Cahill, father to Alex Cahill, and the girl with Cliff was APril Stephens before Alex Cahill.
I lived all these years as a casual Dallas fan and never knew there was a "fake" Pam.
this was the moment I quit watching Dallas.
that isn't victoria principal very sad
Dallas after Bobby came back ( I realize that it was the ONLY way for Bobby to return, for it to be all a dream) but after Victoria Principal left, they knew that no amount of money would have made her return to the role. The writers as the show went on, became weak and ridiculous. They sadly turned the JR character into another Cliff Barnes. Proof is how they ended the series.. It was no longer the greatest drama in history, it became a shell of its former self. They teased us with the fact that VP would come back.
This story line fell off on sooo many levels....
Exactly, Pam would never have done this, would never have lived on...,.
We saw that women in the hall of oil meeting leading by cliff before donna come in with Bobby to take cliff's place.
This version of pam was cold and heartless
They really tried hiding her face behind the dark chair and bright lighting behind her, knowing television picture quality then was shit
Why didn’t Victoria Principal come back for this scene?
Once the show lost Pam then Sue Ellen in the season afterwards, there was no strong women left & the show when downhill in fairness
I, really, dislike making this comment, about my favourite dramatic series but, I don't know how Ken Kercheval was able to keep a straight face, throughout this scene; just, not believable/credible/satisfying, for a viewer.
