Haha! This could be a 10 parter. I used to go to a gym with 1 bench press that always had 10 guys waiting for, and about 40 treadmills; 4 would be in use.
Only recently have I started to look into calisthenics-based workouts, and your channel was the push I needed to begin to move in this direction. It finally dawned on me that after all this time in the gym, I still couldn't do many push-ups, or any pull-ups at all; so I figured that the bodyweight exercises must be more challenging than what I had been doing. Using a book with a well-regarded beginner progression among its workouts, I'm excited to see what I can do if I just keep at it. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hey Al, Personally speaking, the treadmill is softer on my joints than the road or even tracks. That's where I prefer doing most of my long-distance running these days. Sprints at the track, and hiking/rucking for the trails. I understand the disdain for treadmills, but I really like them. Realistically though, getting rid of some of them for another squat rack and/or deadlift platform would make most gyms better.
No prob w/ the treadmill if that's what works for you, but why?...how? Wouldn't you rather be outside covering ground? Either way, want to get, cdnservatably, 1/3 more from your workouts? Reachout.
@@oldnatty61 I was clear why I use the treadmill, to have less wear on my body compared to road running. And if I'm aiming to cover ground, I'll be taking a hike in nature. I've run hundreds of miles on roads, trails, and tracks. At the end of the day, I'm training my gait and cardiovascular system.
I always favoured jump rope and burpees for cardio. Simple, low tech, but effective. That said, I do have a long term injury now that means burpees can be problematic. Therefore I can see how machines can be beneficial for those of us working around an injury.
I totally get your point. Saying that, living in a small studio flat in the country where training outdoor can be done maximum 3-4 months a year, I do need to go to the commercial gym😐
Agree, Al.. The only stuff I need is a kettlebell, because they align with the body structure nicely.. And a bar or rings for pullups and dips.. I also love to use a pushup board.. Other than that just myself
I saw a recent video where you said you've been doing squats and deadlifts once or twice per week. I'm not asking in an accusatory way, just curious, but why not use the isochain? As a follow up, have you used the isochain and seen results from it? Been watching your videos for a long time, you're great. Thank you!
I've read a couple of your books and I know how you feel about supplements and I know that you only drink water but what do you make of some of those additives like those Mio squirt with flavor into the water? Zero sugar and zero calories. Healthy or skip it? What are your thoughts?
Hey, Al. Do you still manage a Crunch gym? I’m a commercial gym manager myself and while I love the facility, some of the equipment makes me roll my eyes.
Not just floor space, I can sometimes get floorspace depending on the gym. It's WALL SPACE that is noexistent in gyms. Even if it's a dance floor for ballet, there's no wall space because they got junk up against it or a mirror taking up the whole thing. I rely on the wall for so many exercises, that now I can't do because you got junk lined up against it.
Hey hey hey Al, I really like your slim look that may make folks underestimate your strength. Do you consciously eat to maintain that balance? - like cycling more protein on workout heavy days? As someone that wants to stay slim but achieve more muscles in certains areas - what strategies for eating and timing would you recommend I try ?
I workout at home for 15 years for all these reasons (also mooney and the soundtrack..)...but I´d defend the treadmill since, for me, as a mountaineer, walking an inclined treadmill with a backpack is a great workout (since where I live there´s no long steep hills..).
Hey hey hey AL.... it's always so positively refreshing to see new videos from you, can you upload more often, and, a question, what's your favorite push up variation for strength, muscle and overall athleticism? Mine are one arm one leg push ups and one arm divebomber push ups.... but your answer may help me find out what I am missing. Thanks in advance.
In defense of treadmills, they provide a decent way to do some cardio exercise when the weather is bad (which you mentioned), and also a way to precisely graduate and control for speed and incline. Kind of like dumbbells or weight plates that come in all sizes and allow for small adjustments. Also, it's good for people who might not live in walkable/safe neighborhoods and still want to get a walk/run in. All things being equal, though, I do prefer being outside and walking/rucking/running there.
I used to train as a hobby boxer. After one year i joined a nice gym with a boxing area. First i was like, cool lets train here if my club is closed or so, then i saw that the gym used the old eqiument of my boxing club...
I think all the things in the gim are what most people want, because most people don't like to actually work out. Why if someone opens a gim that has only barbells , dumbells, bars for pull-up and dip and a lot of floorspace whon't have as much succes as the guy with all the machines? I workout at home because calisthenics and weights are all I need to keep me in shape.
The fancy machines are there to justify the expense. The expense is there so skipping a workout will feel like losing money. People motivate themselves with losing money because they don't really care about their fitness -- they're just copying what they see on TV.
Why are you so friendly, good energy? Where dies it come from? Do you have some family members, who are so friendly with big hearth? Sirious question ✌ greetings from germany
Hey hey hey Al.... here ıs my question as a 50 year old man having spent almost 40 years of calisthenics.... high volume(easy sets) or high intensity? (Low sets close to failure with very high reps)... I know you're heard of this question zillion times in your life but I really wonder your answer.... thank you....
I'm sorry for this temporary discomfort, but everybody needs these little unpleasant jolts to keep safety and common sense in mind. Don't be scared of being "that guy" at the gym who insists on spotting somebody who's working out alone.
Please...show us AL, the head stand progression? Maybe, have covered it already. Been following you for a year. No Gym for me! Workouts at home. Thank you..
Gyms are a business and this is all part of their business model. Gyms know that most people who get a membership will just come and use the cardio machines for a while and then stop coming after a few months. So they're profitting off someone who isn't even using the gym. If they had more weight training equipment and less cardio machines, they would attract less of these casual gym goers and only the few dedicated people who are actually there regularly. Simply put they make a lot more money off of the treadmill than the weights.
When I first joined a gym, it was slightly intimidating. The treadmills and indoor cycles were a way to ease into regular exercise. After a while, I experimented with resistance machines and did my walking outdoors. Now I've graduated to using a mix of free weights and machines three days a week and I'm using the treadmills on 'rest' days to work on my cardio/running. There is truth to what you are saying but I'm glad my gym has a good supply of resistance and cardio equipment.
I just skipped my gym membership, the gym seems to be the place to avoid, with Omikron taking over.. I got everyting I need to get good workouts, at home, anyway.. I'm in for a push up workout right to come, 13sets a 5-6reps every 5min, feet and hands elevated..

My motto is: workout primarily for your health and fitness, avoid drugs etc......and most certainly avoid all the crap of trying to impress others. When you get to 67 like me: then your more concerned about your imminent end, rather than trying to impress others.

Truth 💯
The first thing I noticed, and liked, about Cross Fit when I started a few years ago, was that there were no mirrors in the gym.
your the man Al
Hey Al, which do you think are better for building upper body pushing strength, pushup progressions or the bench press?
Hey hey hey Al! What are your thoughts on using stuff like avocado oil and butter over “0 calorie” cooking spray? Is one better than the other?
Hey hey hey! Al, you took the words right outta my mouth. Where is the room to move?
Hey hey hey Al. Have you ever don bouldering/climbing? I just started doing it last month and love it! Ritchie
I want a full response video to my question by The New Year Al or I am taking down all your posters.

Damn, it really made me appreciate my gym that has enough space for me to train cartwheels, jumps, long jumps etc.

Agreed, I quit the gym also because they had no spots for pushups and Planck
No room for Planck... ha! 😃 That's funny if you know a little quantum physics... if not, look up Max Planck.
You can also teach English to foreigners, your accent and pronunciation is so easy to understand, you speak slow and clear!!
100% agree also I hate people who sit on machines on their phones talking or following their workout plan
That guy in first clip dropping barbell on his neck was horrific! Damn! Hope he was okay.
This is the funniest video! :D
I had to look up the squat magic to see if it was real. I laughed through the entire video for it.
