    Hiking briskly with a weighted backpack (AKA rucking) is a great sub for running!

      For sure! I used to be a long distance runner and now due to injuries and the lack of joy I find in running, hiking is definitely a great substitute. I may not be able to run a mile anymore, but I'm sure if chased the adrenaline will kick in and help with that!

    I’d replace overhead press with squats, with OH press at a close fourth, but I guess that’s a minor quibble and a personal preference. Great vid, Al!

    I'd say loaded carries, overhead press and endurance walking are my top 3.
    Pull-ups are great but we don't need to pull ourselves up regularly. We all carry things, just try to go a day without picking up a single object! We also take/put things on shelves or in the attic so the overhead press is used pretty much daily. We're also built to walk long, long distances so walking a lot should be a part of anyone's training. Just my opinion and I love seeing other's views on fitness

    • @ukguy

      Yeah loaded carries are probably the most functional exercise tbh

      Totally agree with this. I suck at pull-ups. Although they are a great exercise, they are not needed for functional strength. I do loaded carries. I also walk a lot I think it's what keeps me alive at 61. Rucking is also an awesome exercise.

    Hello from Philadelphia PA! Love these vids. Using your pistol squat book and going slow. Making progress!

    Good advice, thank you. I was expecting exercises like pistol squats, handstand push-ups, and pull-ups. But you're right, if we have to choose between squats and running, running has better effects on our general health and is definitely functional.

    Hey Al! Thank you for the video. I had to go do some handstand pushups and pull ups after seeing this. Would love for you to go deeper into running/cardio. I used to play basketball, but my body gets a little too beat up from it and it's gotten harder to find people my age to play with. Seems like I could do running, but last time I tried, my knees and ankles would ache constantly and I just felt tired in the evening, like I just wanted to sit down all the time. How much should someone run? How often, how far and how fast?

  • @ClockCutter
    @ClockCutter 2 года назад +4

    Al has never had to push a car after running out of gas. This, by the way, may become a much more needed capacity. Most of the real world pushing we do is horizontal.

    I was a late bloomer, but when I got into early adulthood I started doing all the athletic activities I never did as a child. Well, this involved lots of running of course. Full speed, all out, running as fast as you can. My legs exploded with new muscular growth! It was shocking how much muscle I gained and how much bigger my legs got in a very short amount of time! I’m 53 now and haven’t ran since I was 38 and tore the acl and meniscus in my left knee and then started experiencing terrible pain in the right knee knee as well. Sucks! If I was pain free, I’d start running immediately because I know firsthand how effective it is!

    Great video. I wonder why you didn't choose deadlift over overhead press? I think people need to lift heavy things off the floor a lot more often than lifting above their head.

    Question AL,, isometric holds, do you have any experience of using these holds during push ups , pull ups, squats etc, if so did you notice any gains in strength or muscle size, etc , just thinking about how gymnasts use holds alot, and they are jacked per bodyweight ratio, hello and thanks 🇬🇧

      @@anthonyromayo6296 What isometric exercises are you doing?

    • @anthonyromayo6296
      @anthonyromayo6296 Год назад +1

      @@Mjolbaggar I do both overcoming and yielding isometrics. That includes the Bull worker. What I do is use the World Fit ISO trainer. Although I do different angles of different exercises my main upper body exercises are, chest press, military press, something I call cross back presses (in which I have the strap behind my back across my shoulders like you would put a bar for squatting and then grab each handle and press out), I also do different kind of pulls generally speaking it's the strap in front of me with my hands spread at different angles and try to actually pull the strap apart. I learned a lot from Steve Justa's two books. His take on isometrics was phenomenal. I can go on all day if you like but they are the main Crux of all of my exercises. For my yielding Isometrics I do Hindu squats, bottom position push up holds, and a chair hold in which I grab my dinette chair and hold it in front of me with my arms almost all the way straightened out completely for time. Everything else I do is calisthenics push-ups body weight squats squat thrusts. I ruck , and do loaded of carries with a big rock that I have. But like I said before mainly everything is isometrics.

    Hey AL, does Hey hey hey I'm AL have anything to do with the Fat Albert Cartoon? Here's the "real" question. I have gotten tendinitis in my elbows from both Yoga (transitions from upward to downward dog) and pull ups. (I loved the power yoga results but the elbows messed it up.)As a 51 year old Marine Corps veteran I can't let go of the pull ups obsession. I want to master a fitness discipline for the long haul as I age with no physical downside. I love swimming but won't always have access to water. What do you know/think about Tai chi chuan? I know it doesn't get you "jacked" but I have dabbled in it and my legs got strong and It felt great to have the loosy goosy mobility. Can you build strength with Tai Chi Chuan if you ad maybe a sword/staff or other martial arts routine? Is there no perfect excercise that builds your body, is always 100% available and doesn't create injury from repetition?Thanks, thanks, thanks!

    Al,
    Some pain in my shoulder stops me from doing pull-ups and push-ups
    Quite for a time
    Of late I have started simple hanning on a bar. Just to do at least something
    And as a remedy, which has helped me indeed but not altogether.
    Have you ever had problems with your shoulders?
    What did you do?
