Also Loras too just became a joke character when he was supposed to be quite a skilled fight too.They did well with Oberyn and Arhur Dayne at least. In the book it was clear that Jaime lost this fight because of his condition, although he did still underestimate Brienne thinking he wouldn't need to be at full strength. In the show it's really just a whole girl power thing, she just wrecks him. We never see Jaime's skill, even against Ned Stark it seemed quite even and he only killed Jorl Cassel by cheating.

That is all this was there is simply no other way to interpret such a drastic and frankly not good change, I cant imagine anyone preferring how this went here over how it was in the books, also in the books both come out looking amazing brine says something along the lines after recalling there duel/battle" his speed and technique were very impressive and intimidating even after being in chains and starved and etc for over a year he could still take on and defeat most around even as he is right now! and there fight was very admirable and high level by both, in the show she literally humiliated him 1`00 percent no challenge even a little bit she may have been dueling fricking Podrick for frucks sakes, then when they talk about it in the show recall scene she again humiliates him by saying" maybe you were that good and fast..once" or maybe you were just hyped up...doubling down on the emasculation and humiliation of course, again literal polar opposite/flat out revision of how this actually great fight scene/duel was actually in the books, and I get it I'm not trying top be " oh yah well in the books" kinda guys I'm not lol but no one can reasonably argue this is better then that or even close nor can they really argue against why they chose to change this because that is obvious enough.

      "easy to beat the crap out of them" I'm assuming you mean maces, mordhau, and warhammers. Ok first of all. It's not that easy. Second of all, on a 1v1 duel, a well trained knight will very likely know how to counter attacks from blunt weapons. They've literally been training since the age of 7. And third of all, and I hope this isn't true, if you're talking about beating the crap out of a knight with the actual blade of your sword....tell me again how that is not an advantage to plate? If you hit an unarmored opponent once, he goes down, but with plate, he can take multiple hits.
      "just back away from the sword hand bro" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
      Knights have been literally training since the age of 7. It's likely he'll be the one tiring you out rather then the other way around 😂😂 Especially since he only needs one good strike at your flesh vs you dodging and weaving and trying to hit him multiple times in his armor lmfao.
      Real life isn't GoT and you're not Oberyn or Bronn dawg. Even then, the only reason they won was because they're opponents had grossly overly heavy plate, it was explained in the novels.

    For me, this is the only scene that actually makes it properly feel like Jaime is the best swordsman in Westeros. As other people noted, we dont get to see him ever fight a “real” fight at his peak, but the way Jaime acts with the sword while seriously disadvantaged, and the way Brienne reacts to him getting the sword and being 100% on guard makes it feel real. Like he really is the last person you would ever want to fight in a duel. The only time in the show it is ever Shown rather than just Told to us, and it was done beautifully. Superb acting done by both, and excellent choreography for the fight.

      Yes, he is on his last legs in regards to malnourishment, exhaustion along with cold and soaked through, hands tied up. The amount of handicaps he has here stack the odds very much against him. He tried, because he's used to finding an advantage. But Brienne deserves her props. She is a total bruiser, able to best The Hound when he was at peak performance level and without any hindrance to his abilities. I actually quite like Jaimes implied capabilities. The bridge as a place to fight was not bad, gently curved and overall flat, not unlike tourney fields where Jaime may have had more experience than Brienne in fighting. His just dropping down for a sit obviously frustrated Brienne who wanted to keep out of sight was much as is possible; certainly not out in the open on a bridge(which in the scene following the fight was part of their mutual undoing).
      His refusal to move and verbal whining was meant to and succeeded in drawing her in and when she heaved him back up to his feet, he made his move. Sharp sword makes quick work of the 'leash' he was being dragged around by and now... hands bound but having a sword...Jaime's got a chance.

If he was a tad healthier he probably could’ve beaten her in the beginning, but because she was able to defend well in the start, he started losing the final reserves he had and she was able to treat him more bluntly. It started as life and death, and ended with a thump as he collapses from exhaustion, she barely even needs to hit him. She even starts to look at him differently as the fight drags on, starting extremely wary and defensive, and ending kind of annoyed and aggressively battering his sword away.

His longsword grew heavier with every blow, and Jaime knew he was not swinging it as quickly as he'd done earlier, nor raising it as high._

      +Diego Pachón Arthur Dayne was pretty much his mentor. In the book he doesn't use 2 swords. He said "some knights" though. Arthur Dayne was not some knight.
      Using 2 swords that heavy is insane, Arthur Dayne has to be pretty much the only person who could wield 2 heavy swords like this in the entire verse. The Hound and the Mountain would be strong enough to lift two swords but to effectively attack and defend with both swords you also need a lot of fluidity otherwise the extra sword is useless.

    • @musigma5050
      @musigma5050 8 лет назад +36

      +theo konstantellos ..What? Both long-swords and arming swords(which most European knights did carry at once, historically) were built for one-handed use(as well as two-handed, in the case of the flexible longsword). So long as you have adequate strength in each arm, there's no reason why you wouldn't be able to hold a sword in each. And weight does not matter so much as balance. If the weight of the sword is balanced properly, it can be quite heavy before it starts to actually become impractical. In fact, swords tend to be weighty on purpose, as it literally adds weight to the swing. To use a bit of RPG terminology, when it comes to one-handed swords and longswords, dexterity is far more important than strength. So long as the swords are well-made, which you'd expect the best swordsman in Westeros to have, *any* knight could lift two swords effectively enough to learn Florentine techniques.
      Whether or not dual-wielding swords is a good idea over say, two-handing a longsword, or dual-wielding a sword and a buckler or a parrying dagger, is another matter.

    • @angelnikolov9596
      @angelnikolov9596 8 лет назад +32

      An average longsword weights about 1.1-1.8 kg. Thats not heavy, anyone can lift two swords .... ( its not common because its not practical, its much better to hold a shield or a buckler in your other hand. A sword and a dagger is a good combination though )

    After all this time I think I found out what this show did wrong at Jaime right here. In the books, Jaime, even in this dreary state, is so good of a swordsman that Brienne almost doesn't stand a chance. Do you know how this show should have depicted that? I have just watched the duel from Troy between Brad Pitt (Achilles/god) and Hector. Brad Pitt is very calm during the fight and you can see that even though he moves fast as HELL, he is breathing slowly and steadily. Hector is getting more and more tired, breathing super fast, and getting drenched in sweat, his hair is oily and he can't keep up with Brad's pace. Brad Pitt employs EXTREME stability in his legs, for example when he lands from a jump he doesn't even boggle for one centimeter, he lands and stays in that position like a solid marble statue. Hector, in opposition, stumbles over a rock. Even in the movements it looks like Brad has something like a 6th sense that helps him predict Hectors attacks, and you can really FEEL the gap between a God at work, and a mere human, Hector. One last thing, you can see that Brad plays with Hector like with a toy. He could have killed him many times during the fight, but chose not to, when he punched Hector with his fist, or even just pushed him away with his bare hand. That's another way to further show his supremacy over Hector.

    1:37 Is anyone gonna talk about how badass that "honorable" blade-interlocking round was; how they geometrically check each other "around the clock" trying to gain the upper hand move-for-move? It's so well choreographed and frankly beautiful to watch. The gliding effect, the sound design, the technique (not to mention dangerously high stakes) is just all round superb!
    Gets my panties in a twist. And I'm not even wearing panties. Nor am I a woman.

    Its a shame that we didn't get to see more of Jamie's Sword fighting.

      Nikolaj Coster-Waldau sucked at it, that's why.

      @@JakeKoenig They could've made it seem good, no actor knows how to use the long sword, and its just choreography, and after like 1 move they could cut and shoot the next one. So they could've made it work easily, i ques the lore couldn't find him anymore opponents that would've had change to beat him and after losing the hand he could've used the gold hand as a shield and then we could have few scenes more where he fights with his left hand.

    I just realized, this was the last time Jamie had both hands for a fight

    They really should've had Jaime have a bit more fight in him. How it went in the series, he looks like a massive goose and a great big sack of wind, thanks to this scene. True, at this point Jaime was a long imprisoned, skinny and malnourished sack of bones barely kept together by some skin and withered muscle. Still, he was one of the most skilled fighters under the sun and they should've driven that point by having him give Brienne a much harder time.... like it went in the book, as much as I hate to be the book-nerd. it would've made the cutting of his hand a much more dramatic moment for the character, too.
    Oh well. Coster-Waldau does such a good job portraying Jaime and the change of his character that it's not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

    "You shouldn't grimace before you lunge it gives away the game." *Immediately grimaces as he makes his next move*
    That aside though I fucking love this scene. Jaime's excitement and confidence with a sword in his hand for the first time in months, Brienne dropping into stance refusing to back down from one of the greatest swordsman alive. These two are about it when it comes to swordplay and it's awesome, sucks they never got to fight or spar with an even playing field, Jaime's at a huge disadvantage here but even at full strength with armor it would definitely be a fight

      No, it wouldn't. The ONLY reason Brienne gets out of this fight alive is because he's been a prisoner for a year, starved and exhausted. In the books, he still outfights her even in this state and she decides to wrestle him with her superior strength. The show made it more even because that's somehow more cinematic, but the books scene is much more in line with the lore and both characters.

    I've said it once and I'll say it again. Jaime literally could've gotten a better prosthetic hand that would allow him to grip a sword properly. Gotz of the Iron Hand was a real life mercenary who did the exact same thing after he lost his hand in battle

    At first I didn’t like the fighting as it looked like she was pulling her strikes. But as soon as I thought about it and realized she wasn’t even trying to kill him, the pulling back made a lot more sense and made the scene that much better.
