The bulk of Stannis's army was killed at the Battle of the Blackwater, the rest were wiped out during the First Battle of Winterfell, if any survived they would have either fled or joined with Jon Snow at the Battle of the Bastards which I'm sure resulted in massive casualties for both sides. Then going on to S8 if there were any Baratheon Bannerman who somehow survived all of that they would've been present during the Long Night Battle. You'd either have to be extremely lucky or incredibly skilled to have survived all that, and I doubt most these men would've even survived the Blackwater.

Renly asks lady stark if ser barristan is with her son, because he said he was going to serve the true ruler of the throne, and he hadn't showed up to serve renly or stannis yet, so they figured the only other potentail ruler was robb. The whole section was foreshadowing to barristan showing up to serve daenerys
maybe if she wasnt flat chested it would have. as it stands, she is the most ill equipped queen consort ever. which actually worked uite well, seeing as her husband was the most ill equipped king ever. dude was so gay he couldnt even fuck her drunk, he tried to put it in her butt.
This is what I like about Renly: He gives his full and complete attention to the champion, Brienne. Loras is looking at Renly, shaking his head. Margery is looking at him, too. But King Renly is in his regal finest; he requires the approval of no one.

Probably the most realistic fight in the entire show. We finally get to see armors serving their real defensive purpose and not just being cut and pierced in one strike.

High Garden's fall was bullshit, because you cant just take one of the biggest castle in realm in one evening. And you cant just move whole fleet/army without enemy knowing about it. Spies, scouts, dragon would learn for sure a few days in advance about movement of lion army and if they would want to move quickly they wouldnt have sige equipment with them. So they would have to build one. Or this is all bs and D&D wanted just to end the show
@@Just_a-guy While the fall of High Garden isn't unplausible, you're correct that it was bullshit. The entire strategy and realism was completely lost in Season 8. As you said, taking a castle in one night is virtually impossible, and High Garden's Larders were probably full. A siege would be pointless and impossible cause Daenerys swooping in with the Dragons would end the siege, all it takes is one Raven to make it out of the castle. The would have to break down the gates, and whilst High Garden may not be very adept at war they are also not completely incompetent. They can't be or they wouldn't be such an affluent House. Really just a shame...
@@cruusha9866 yea it's true, Highgarden was in control of lands completely untouched by war. The Lannisters were dealing with 2 wars with substantial losses and , debt and inflation. While the Tyrell army was effectively untouched the entire time (seeing as they went home after Renly was killed) They also had control over food production in the realm after the wars decimated the Riverlands. They could have done so much to have the Tyrells out of the picture or perhaps part of the Lannister's with whoever took over after Mace (since they decided to remove Mace's two eldest sons from the boks). But Jamie took the mighty Highgarden in less time than it took for him to take a bath.
She is always on point. Got and vikings both managed some of the best casting I've ever seen in my life. But they all also had incredibly good directors and editors because if you ever watched behind the scenes you'll see just how much direction the actors actually get in real time Every one of these actors would tell you that they are nothing without the best writes, directors, and editors

I think was the scene that made me really like Renly. You have all these lords and men disappointed that a woman bested a man, and even Margery who is supposedly a semi-good character is being quite petty with her brother's loss. Renly on the other hand takes it to good heart that his lover got his ass handed down to him, then even accepts Brienne's request despite the others being appalled at the idea.
Ironic isn't it? The closeted gay man is beaten by the woman everbody assumes is a lesbian! I like the way the show later shows that they both had two things in common: 1) Their dedication to being knights. 2) Their love for Renly.
Why would everybody assume she is a lesbian? She is, in book and show, obviously in love with Jaime Lannister. She practically admits it to Cersei at Joffrey's wedding feast. She's straight, she's just never met a man who's physically attracted to her, and she herself in only interested in strong, noble men, like the man Jaime is becoming.

It's also mentioned in the books that Loras's prodigal skill lies primarily in the joust. He even admits outright his older brother is a better swordsman than himself, and Jaime is one of the best in the seven kingdoms with a sword. Different knights excel in different things, and even then chance can unseat a famed knight.
Gotta be honest, watching these scenes just reminds me of how much more I liked the Robb era on the show than any of the others. It felt like a war drama, now it's... different
Tempting fate though it is, I actually really like Renly in this scene. At this particular moment, Renly holds the most power militarily, economically (especially after Tywin reveals the Westerland's gold issue), and politically but when insulted to his face he just laughs it off and carries on. Sure, it's nice to trade barbs and insults with your rivals, but to not act like a child and throw threats shows a level of composure not often seen in a brutal world like this. That's my one and a half septims anyway. Then again, I still love the show and the books as separate entities, so apparently I'm already some kind of heretic in most people's eyes. Whoops!

The allure of the Iron throne was too much for him, and he lost everything he loved, sacrificed everything he held dear over it. The TV Series plays down his religious zealotry. But with the way his arc was going? Pretty soon he'd have become a New Mad King, burning everyone who disagreed with him. Renly might have had the weakest claim of the Five Kings. But he would have been the greatest. Stannis rules by right of birth. Joffrey by right of conquest. But Renly had the backing of the people, and the ability and the wisdom to rule. He'd have allied with Rob Stark. He'd have recognised the threat beyond the rule. Its not hard to imagine he'd reinforce the Wall. I am almost certain he would have reached some agreement with Dany, were she to return to Westeros under his rule. He would have left the Kingdom in the best shape to defend against the Long Night.
Haradion Drogon Stannis recognized that the long night was coming and sent men to the wall. Renly would've just been taking it from Loras and would've indulged in King's Landing. If Renly had been a good guy he wouldve helped Ned install Stannis as King (the rightful heir) instead of squabbling for power himself. Guy starts this scene as Catelyn points out "playing at a war" Renly was all shownmanship and no action. If Renly was smart instead of being a sissy, he could've invaded King's Landing easily.

Love the attention to detail in the duel Brie is bigger, more likely to get hit because her size is a bigger hit radius so she uses a shield to protect herself. The flower Knight is smaller so he uses a axe with a long shaft to keep Brie at a distance and a axe has alot of stopping power, something you'd want to use against a bigger fighter
That is not how real life fighting works. Plus axes are not spears, because of being top heavy you have to grip it high. Look where his hand are on the axe. In term of reach axes arent great option.
It seems that Loras is stupid to forgot the bonds between the Starks and Baratheons, to demand Cat to kneel. Stannis, Renly even Robert always treat the Starks with equal and much respect....
It's too bad Renly got whacked so early on. I feel the actor was just starting to come into his own as a king. But then the number of interesting characters that have been offed so far...Qorin Halfhand, the guy who Boromir'd himself for Arya & Gendry, maybe Arya's dancing master, et al. At least Jaqen H'gar is still around - cool and harder to kill off than pretty much anybody.

Renly was poised to win the war at this point. The greatest tragedy in the series truly is that his host was scattered, even though I didn't like him that much personally. His demise opened all the doors for the Lannisters

According to the books, Brienne is really ugly and also looks clumsy and uncomfortable in both armor and women's clothes. She is constantly ridiculed, but also underestimated, and I think her walk captures this perfectly.

That would've worked in the short term but Renly's reign over Westeros would've been as bad a Robert's later reign, if not worse. Not only would he be setting the president that any younger sibling can take whatever they want with a large army, leading to who knows how many deaths. Furthermore, Renly was willing to leave Littlefinger in power and give titles to his friends like Mace Tyrell, who was a corrupt man The Small Council would've been riddled with the same corruption that allowed The Lannisters to thrive under Robert's reign. Come one of the later Seasons, once Daenerys Targaryen arrived in Westeros, many Reach Houses, being Targaryen Loyalists, would've switched sides.

Yes Stannis is dedicated to his duty and I am sure he would put many laws in place that could benefit the realm but his uncompromising nature would see him a short reign. He would never make peace with the Lannisters and the Tyrells would never side with him (due to a list of reasons). He also was heavily against Robb being named King of The North and Trident and even viewed him as a usurper. That's 4 of the Seven Kingdoms already against Stannis. With Renly he was already aligned with the Tyrells and was in talks with Robb of an alliance. He most likely would of crushed the Lannisters but there is possibility he would of made peace with them after taking the throne. That's one reason Stannis could never rule well. You can be as dutiful as can be but you can never be king if all your vassals are against you. Another reason, and one which many people don't take into account, is Stannis's court. Yes Stannis has a few good people in his court like Ser Davos and eventually Rolland Storm, but most of his court and majority of his army (before Renly's death and when he is in The North) are filled with Queens men. These men are religious extremists and have many members (Melisandre, Queen Selyse Florent, Axell Florent etc) that are in high places in Stannis's court and army. We have been already exposed to their extreme behaviour on Dragonstone when they burnt the sept there. If Stannis is to take the throne those Queens men are likely to burn the Sept of Baelor down and I doubt Stannis would be able to stop it since he couldn't stop it happening at Dragonstone and even somewhat cosigned their religion with the burning of the Seven statues. This would then create a war with the faith, similar to King Maegor's. The spread and influence of the Queens men and R'hllor would be a worse corruption than any of the Lords Renly would have at court. And the argument of Lord Mace's corruption in the position of hand of the king falls flat when you look at his Stannis counterpart, Lord Alester Florent, a man that is just as corrupt if not more than Mace, a man that changes his religion to R'hllor as soon as he switches sides from Renly to Stannis so that he can gain favour in Stannis's court. And Stannis names him Hand of the King. About your point of Renly setting a precedent of the younger brother being entitled to the throne, I believe it's impact is way over exaggerated. One reason for this is because its happened before, actually in both Stannis and Renly's bloodline. There was a point in the Durrandon Kings succession line that a younger bastard overthrew his older true born brother who had been King of the Stormlands. That event never set a precedent so why would Renly's claim to the throne do so. The only precedent it would set is that people are able to claim the throne through right of conquest, which was already a precedent. I'd also add that Renly's reign would not be as bad as Roberts. Renly would actually do his job and tend to the realm and attend council meetings as he had been already doing so as Master of Laws. Also whilst the Tyrell influence would be prevelant in Renly's court it would never be as bad as the Lannisters. Robert had the Lannisters do whatever they wanted, allowed himself to be in massive debt to them and even allowed Cersei to influence his Kingsguard and add Lannister cronies such as Meryn Trant and Boros Blount. There is no evidence Renly would allow this as he has a Kingsguard made up of people loyal to him and is not in debt to Lord Mace. Also I would much rather the influence of the Tyrells than that of the Lannisters or Melisandre, Florents and the Queens men.
@@amanimckenzie32 Stannis takes KL, Tywin could try to besiege it if Stannis lops off both Joffrey and Tommen's heads, then there's no Lannister King for Marg to marry as she can't marry the hostage Cersei, making The Tyrell Alliance mute. Ironically, if Tywin besieges KL and the Tyrells bail, Robb may want to hoof it over to the capital to break Tywin and save Sansa (and Arya). I don't think you need to do much math in that scenario to calculate who comes out on top. As for the aftermath, Robb's host would be bloodied and Stannis would still have his sisters. And as for Renly, he says himself he would've made Robb bend the knee and swear an oath of fealty. Even though Renly says Robb can be King, he would've turned Robb into nothing more than a glorified puppet, something Robb wouldn't've been happy about. As for Stannis as King, I doubt he'd let his followers get too rowdy. He may turn a blind eye but not for long, I mean look what happened when his officers demanded he burn people at Crofter's Village. Sure he killed three criminals but he went no further than that, talking down to his men who suggested it. So the problem with Renly is that he is second to last in the bottom of succession, Hell, very last if you include Shireen being above him. I imagine the guy who over threw his brother wasn't the youngest of three, plus that event happened thousands of years ago and people in Westeros only remember was everything after The Conquest. And Renly's reign would have been pretty bad seeing as Mace Tyrell would spread his influence as far as he could and Renly wouldn't go against his father-in-law. Also, the people of King's Landing wouldn't be crazy enough to adopt this foreign religion without a miracle and they'd be more likely to adopt Tyrell gold.
@@gfilmer7150 Firstly there is no way Stannis will kill Joffrey and Tommen both and nullify the Tyrell Lannister alliance (unless you are talking about the show). This is because the Lannisters had a back up plan for if Kings Landing fell and would of crowned Tommen as king at Rosby. This would then continue the alliance. As for Renly's terms for alliance with The North it is not as you put it. He gives Robb the ability to be king and bend the knee. This would put The North in a similar situation to Dorne when they bent the knee. There is also no evidence that Renly wanted to make Robb a puppet, that is just false. With Stannis he straight up names Robb a usurper and orders him to bend the knee having no negotiation about it. This sets Stannis having 4 Kingdoms against him whilst Renly only had one (The Westerlands). There is also no factor pointing to Robb and The North bending the knee once Sansa is in Stannis's control. They are fighting a war of independence and they didn't trade the Stark girls and back down when it was the Lannisters they were against. All that would happen is that the conflict would shift from the Lannisters vs Robb to Stannis vs Robb.This sets Stannis up for a turbulent and probably short reign. As for Stannis and his court, the influence of the Queens men is already overgrown. Much of his council is made up of R'hllor supporters. Just because he stopped them burning a village doesn't mean he can stop them burning the Sept of Baelor. If Stannis was to take Kings Landing its evident that the Sept would of been burnt and there would of been war with the faith. And also when I mention influence of the Queens men I don't mean the people of Kings Landing would turn to the religion, i mean that many of Stannis main supporters and council are Queens men and thus will be able to influence Stannis's court from positions of power. This evidence is seen in his wife and Hand of The King being R'hllor worshippers. Also the Durrandon King thing was even worse than what Renly was doing. Why, because he was a younger bastard. So my point about setting precedences still stands. And it happening years ago changes nothing. All it shows is that through all those years it did not set any precedent. People may not remember it now but people did 5 or 10 years after it happend and a precedent was never set. Yes I agree that Mace would try to spread his influence far and wide but whose to not say the Queens men and the Florents won't do the same. The Florents are just the Stannis counterpart of the Tyrells. And their spread of influence is less to do with people adoping the religion but more to do with putting people that are apart of the religion in influencial places by using their already set status and positions in Stannis's court, influenctial positions such as Queen and Hand of The King. Plus the Queens men are a lot more corrupt and violent than the Tyrells so their spreading of influence would be far worse.
Three powerful and strong women here, each in her own way, but I love how Catelyn is dominant - more assured and ultimately stronger than either of the other two. Her death was one of the great disappointments in the show. I wish we could have gotten Lady Stoneheart.

@@NeilPower feel like that is the advantage that brinne has in a lot of fights. There are pragmatic fighters, bralwer fighters, and skilled honor fighters in the show. Bronn was a pragmatic fighter largely. he was skilled but he worked around hwo to best exploit his enemy. But this pragmatism makes him more capable of doubt as he will back off if he feels outmatched. Jaime and othesr are skilled honor fighters, they have pride in their refined techniques and abilities and want fights to be clean. When the enemy isn't fighting fair though is when they are at theri weakest. The hound, and the mountain, are both brawler fighters, using brute force and strength vs extra refined technique. One could almost say they fight like animals. Brienne has all three aspects to her fighter style and can and will implement any of them. She was also gifted with exceptional size and strength to help as well.
Renly would probably have made the best king out of all choices in the entire series. He understood the value of playing nice and being friendly but also immediately suggested to Eddard Stark that they should strike first before Robert even died. He was not afraid to be both kind and ruthless when the time was right. Hell and after he created the best chance for victory with his Highgarden alliance and at least neutral and friendly stance with the Stark's. He also worked on the small council before and had experience knowing how to actually rule in peace time.
In the books, Renly was a lot like Robert (both physically and personality wise), just a bit smarter and more politically savvy. Renly likely would’ve succumbed to the same shortsightedness that Robert did.
Loras Tyrell is a great warrior. Shame he's been finding himself fighting top tier people all the time in the show lol. Getting jumped by the Mountain and Brienne who subdued Jaime Lannister (albeit severely weakened). I don't remember if he fought anyone else besides participating in the Blackwater.

We are strong because we are different, and skill and strength of arms can vary just as much as the size of a person can vary. You simply want to broaden your generalization into a law of nature. In any case it pays to be wary of when people love their own thoughts so much that they feel their generalization is incontrovertible, especially when they proceed to insult someone with the basest and most banal of language. Is a woman warrior like Brienne as likely as a male of such capacity? No, who would say so? But that certainly doesn't mean you can say never when such things clearly have happened before.
Not sure why Varys didn't try to back Renly. He was gentler than Stannis, but stronger than Tommen, and with the right family name. He is loved by the people and nobles, and he is decent at the game. Quite unfortunate that he died.
The show doesn't really make anything of it, but to astute book readers there are many clues that Varys is a lesser scion of the Targaryen house, probably a descendant of Aerion brightflame. He's a Targaryen loyalist at heart. Hence his pact with Illyrio Mopatis, _"Red or Black, a Dragon is still a Dragon."_ In the books he backs (f)Aegon. In the show, Denaerys.
I liked the character of Renly. He wasn't really a great man. But he was a reasonable one. Didn't really enjoy fighting or bloodshed but he knew how to put on a good front. And he wasn't quick to temper or overly-concerned with how people saw him. In his mind so long as they never saw his true self, the self that loved other men, then he didn't give a damn what people thought of his false persona that he wore around. That gave him a genuine advantage over the egotistical and narcissistic competition for the crown. He was never blinded by a desire to been seen as something more than he was. But he knew what he was and what he could gain. He understood how to use the advantages of his bloodline to take something great for himself. As a king he would have done quite well. Quite fair, well-tempered, not a shred of cruelty or hatred in him. He'd have stacked his council with decent leaders and gone about a good life.
Anyone notice the grunts and moans brienne makes while fighting make her sound similar to Bane in dark knight rises? just makes her that much cooler in my books

Realistically, if we were going to ignore Melisandre's little deus ex machina, Renly would have crushed Stannis (Renly's vanguard alone greatly outnumbered Stannis' entire force), waited for the Lannisters and Starks (his army was bigger than both combined) to wear each other out, then win without much trouble. Renly even offered that he could be "King of the North" as long as he bowed to Renly. It was the most generous result the North/Riverlands could have gotten.
Loras and Brienne are excellent fighters. They were the last two remaining out of all the other men. Such a shame we couldn’t see them both talk about Renly in the future.
Mrs. suffered such indignities at the hands of those she loved and was trying to protect. I think her story arch is one of the sadest of the whole series.

High Garden's fall was bullshit, because you cant just take one of the biggest castle in realm in one evening. And you cant just move whole fleet/army without enemy knowing about it. Spies, scouts, dragon would learn for sure a few days in advance about movement of lion army and if they would want to move quickly they wouldnt have sige equipment with them. So they would have to build one. Or this is all bs and D&D wanted just to end the show
@@Just_a-guy While the fall of High Garden isn't unplausible, you're correct that it was bullshit. The entire strategy and realism was completely lost in Season 8. As you said, taking a castle in one night is virtually impossible, and High Garden's Larders were probably full. A siege would be pointless and impossible cause Daenerys swooping in with the Dragons would end the siege, all it takes is one Raven to make it out of the castle. The would have to break down the gates, and whilst High Garden may not be very adept at war they are also not completely incompetent. They can't be or they wouldn't be such an affluent House.

@@cruusha9866 yea it's true, Highgarden was in control of lands completely untouched by war. The Lannisters were dealing with 2 wars with substantial losses and , debt and inflation. While the Tyrell army was effectively untouched the entire time (seeing as they went home after Renly was killed) They also had control over food production in the realm after the wars decimated the Riverlands. They could have done so much to have the Tyrells out of the picture or perhaps part of the Lannister's with whoever took over after Mace (since they decided to remove Mace's two eldest sons from the boks). But Jamie took the mighty Highgarden in less time than it took for him to take a bath.

I think was the scene that made me really like Renly. You have all these lords and men disappointed that a woman bested a man, and even Margery who is supposedly a semi-good character is being quite petty with her brother's loss. Renly on the other hand takes it to good heart that his lover got his ass handed down to him, then even accepts Brienne's request despite the others being appalled at the idea.

I like the way the show later shows that they both had two things in common:
1) Their dedication to being knights.
2) Their love for Renly.
Why would everybody assume she is a lesbian? She is, in book and show, obviously in love with Jaime Lannister. She practically admits it to Cersei at Joffrey's wedding feast.
She's straight, she's just never met a man who's physically attracted to her, and she herself in only interested in strong, noble men, like the man Jaime is becoming.

It's also mentioned in the books that Loras's prodigal skill lies primarily in the joust. He even admits outright his older brother is a better swordsman than himself, and Jaime is one of the best in the seven kingdoms with a sword. Different knights excel in different things, and even then chance can unseat a famed knight.
Gotta be honest, watching these scenes just reminds me of how much more I liked the Robb era on the show than any of the others. It felt like a war drama, now it's... different

Tempting fate though it is, I actually really like Renly in this scene. At this particular moment, Renly holds the most power militarily, economically (especially after Tywin reveals the Westerland's gold issue), and politically but when insulted to his face he just laughs it off and carries on. Sure, it's nice to trade barbs and insults with your rivals, but to not act like a child and throw threats shows a level of composure not often seen in a brutal world like this. That's my one and a half septims anyway. Then again, I still love the show and the books as separate entities, so apparently I'm already some kind of heretic in most people's eyes. Whoops!

If Renly had been a good guy he wouldve helped Ned install Stannis as King (the rightful heir) instead of squabbling for power himself. Guy starts this scene as Catelyn points out "playing at a war" Renly was all shownmanship and no action. If Renly was smart instead of being a sissy, he could've invaded King's Landing easily.

Love the attention to detail in the duel Brie is bigger, more likely to get hit because her size is a bigger hit radius so she uses a shield to protect herself. The flower Knight is smaller so he uses a axe with a long shaft to keep Brie at a distance and a axe has alot of stopping power, something you'd want to use against a bigger fighter
That is not how real life fighting works. Plus axes are not spears, because of being top heavy you have to grip it high. Look where his hand are on the axe. In term of reach axes arent great option.
That melee starts with dozens of competitors by the end the last two are exhausted and swinging wildly.
It seems that Loras is stupid to forgot the bonds between the Starks and Baratheons, to demand Cat to kneel. Stannis, Renly even Robert always treat the Starks with equal and much respect....
It's too bad Renly got whacked so early on. I feel the actor was just starting to come into his own as a king. But then the number of interesting characters that have been offed so far...Qorin Halfhand, the guy who Boromir'd himself for Arya & Gendry, maybe Arya's dancing master, et al. At least Jaqen H'gar is still around - cool and harder to kill off than pretty much anybody.

According to the books, Brienne is really ugly and also looks clumsy and uncomfortable in both armor and women's clothes. She is constantly ridiculed, but also underestimated, and I think her walk captures this perfectly.

Not only would he be setting the president that any younger sibling can take whatever they want with a large army, leading to who knows how many deaths. Furthermore, Renly was willing to leave Littlefinger in power and give titles to his friends like Mace Tyrell, who was a corrupt man The Small Council would've been riddled with the same corruption that allowed The Lannisters to thrive under Robert's reign. Come one of the later Seasons, once Daenerys Targaryen arrived in Westeros, many Reach Houses, being Targaryen Loyalists, would've switched sides.

Yes Stannis is dedicated to his duty and I am sure he would put many laws in place that could benefit the realm but his uncompromising nature would see him a short reign. He would never make peace with the Lannisters and the Tyrells would never side with him (due to a list of reasons). He also was heavily against Robb being named King of The North and Trident and even viewed him as a usurper. That's 4 of the Seven Kingdoms already against Stannis. With Renly he was already aligned with the Tyrells and was in talks with Robb of an alliance. He most likely would of crushed the Lannisters but there is possibility he would of made peace with them after taking the throne. That's one reason Stannis could never rule well. You can be as dutiful as can be but you can never be king if all your vassals are against you.
Another reason, and one which many people don't take into account, is Stannis's court. Yes Stannis has a few good people in his court like Ser Davos and eventually Rolland Storm, but most of his court and majority of his army (before Renly's death and when he is in The North) are filled with Queens men. These men are religious extremists and have many members (Melisandre, Queen Selyse Florent, Axell Florent etc) that are in high places in Stannis's court and army. We have been already exposed to their extreme behaviour on Dragonstone when they burnt the sept there. If Stannis is to take the throne those Queens men are likely to burn the Sept of Baelor down and I doubt Stannis would be able to stop it since he couldn't stop it happening at Dragonstone and even somewhat cosigned their religion with the burning of the Seven statues. This would then create a war with the faith, similar to King Maegor's. The spread and influence of the Queens men and R'hllor would be a worse corruption than any of the Lords Renly would have at court. And the argument of Lord Mace's corruption in the position of hand of the king falls flat when you look at his Stannis counterpart, Lord Alester Florent, a man that is just as corrupt if not more than Mace, a man that changes his religion to R'hllor as soon as he switches sides from Renly to Stannis so that he can gain favour in Stannis's court. And Stannis names him Hand of the King.
About your point of Renly setting a precedent of the younger brother being entitled to the throne, I believe it's impact is way over exaggerated. One reason for this is because its happened before, actually in both Stannis and Renly's bloodline. There was a point in the Durrandon Kings succession line that a younger bastard overthrew his older true born brother who had been King of the Stormlands. That event never set a precedent so why would Renly's claim to the throne do so. The only precedent it would set is that people are able to claim the throne through right of conquest, which was already a precedent.
I'd also add that Renly's reign would not be as bad as Roberts. Renly would actually do his job and tend to the realm and attend council meetings as he had been already doing so as Master of Laws. Also whilst the Tyrell influence would be prevelant in Renly's court it would never be as bad as the Lannisters. Robert had the Lannisters do whatever they wanted, allowed himself to be in massive debt to them and even allowed Cersei to influence his Kingsguard and add Lannister cronies such as Meryn Trant and Boros Blount. There is no evidence Renly would allow this as he has a Kingsguard made up of people loyal to him and is not in debt to Lord Mace. Also I would much rather the influence of the Tyrells than that of the Lannisters or Melisandre, Florents and the Queens men.
@@amanimckenzie32 Stannis takes KL, Tywin could try to besiege it if Stannis lops off both Joffrey and Tommen's heads, then there's no Lannister King for Marg to marry as she can't marry the hostage Cersei, making The Tyrell Alliance mute. Ironically, if Tywin besieges KL and the Tyrells bail, Robb may want to hoof it over to the capital to break Tywin and save Sansa (and Arya). I don't think you need to do much math in that scenario to calculate who comes out on top. As for the aftermath, Robb's host would be bloodied and Stannis would still have his sisters. And as for Renly, he says himself he would've made Robb bend the knee and swear an oath of fealty. Even though Renly says Robb can be King, he would've turned Robb into nothing more than a glorified puppet, something Robb wouldn't've been happy about.
As for Stannis as King, I doubt he'd let his followers get too rowdy. He may turn a blind eye but not for long, I mean look what happened when his officers demanded he burn people at Crofter's Village. Sure he killed three criminals but he went no further than that, talking down to his men who suggested it.
So the problem with Renly is that he is second to last in the bottom of succession, Hell, very last if you include Shireen being above him. I imagine the guy who over threw his brother wasn't the youngest of three, plus that event happened thousands of years ago and people in Westeros only remember was everything after The Conquest.
And Renly's reign would have been pretty bad seeing as Mace Tyrell would spread his influence as far as he could and Renly wouldn't go against his father-in-law. Also, the people of King's Landing wouldn't be crazy enough to adopt this foreign religion without a miracle and they'd be more likely to adopt Tyrell gold.
@@gfilmer7150 Firstly there is no way Stannis will kill Joffrey and Tommen both and nullify the Tyrell Lannister alliance (unless you are talking about the show). This is because the Lannisters had a back up plan for if Kings Landing fell and would of crowned Tommen as king at Rosby. This would then continue the alliance. As for Renly's terms for alliance with The North it is not as you put it. He gives Robb the ability to be king and bend the knee. This would put The North in a similar situation to Dorne when they bent the knee. There is also no evidence that Renly wanted to make Robb a puppet, that is just false. With Stannis he straight up names Robb a usurper and orders him to bend the knee having no negotiation about it. This sets Stannis having 4 Kingdoms against him whilst Renly only had one (The Westerlands). There is also no factor pointing to Robb and The North bending the knee once Sansa is in Stannis's control. They are fighting a war of independence and they didn't trade the Stark girls and back down when it was the Lannisters they were against. All that would happen is that the conflict would shift from the Lannisters vs Robb to Stannis vs Robb.This sets Stannis up for a turbulent and probably short reign.
As for Stannis and his court, the influence of the Queens men is already overgrown. Much of his council is made up of R'hllor supporters. Just because he stopped them burning a village doesn't mean he can stop them burning the Sept of Baelor. If Stannis was to take Kings Landing its evident that the Sept would of been burnt and there would of been war with the faith. And also when I mention influence of the Queens men I don't mean the people of Kings Landing would turn to the religion, i mean that many of Stannis main supporters and council are Queens men and thus will be able to influence Stannis's court from positions of power. This evidence is seen in his wife and Hand of The King being R'hllor worshippers.
Also the Durrandon King thing was even worse than what Renly was doing. Why, because he was a younger bastard. So my point about setting precedences still stands. And it happening years ago changes nothing. All it shows is that through all those years it did not set any precedent. People may not remember it now but people did 5 or 10 years after it happend and a precedent was never set.
Yes I agree that Mace would try to spread his influence far and wide but whose to not say the Queens men and the Florents won't do the same. The Florents are just the Stannis counterpart of the Tyrells. And their spread of influence is less to do with people adoping the religion but more to do with putting people that are apart of the religion in influencial places by using their already set status and positions in Stannis's court, influenctial positions such as Queen and Hand of The King. Plus the Queens men are a lot more corrupt and violent than the Tyrells so their spreading of influence would be far worse.
Three powerful and strong women here, each in her own way, but I love how Catelyn is dominant - more assured and ultimately stronger than either of the other two. Her death was one of the great disappointments in the show. I wish we could have gotten Lady Stoneheart.

There are pragmatic fighters, bralwer fighters, and skilled honor fighters in the show.
Bronn was a pragmatic fighter largely. he was skilled but he worked around hwo to best exploit his enemy. But this pragmatism makes him more capable of doubt as he will back off if he feels outmatched.
Jaime and othesr are skilled honor fighters, they have pride in their refined techniques and abilities and want fights to be clean. When the enemy isn't fighting fair though is when they are at theri weakest.
The hound, and the mountain, are both brawler fighters, using brute force and strength vs extra refined technique. One could almost say they fight like animals.
Brienne has all three aspects to her fighter style and can and will implement any of them. She was also gifted with exceptional size and strength to help as well.
Renly would probably have made the best king out of all choices in the entire series. He understood the value of playing nice and being friendly but also immediately suggested to Eddard Stark that they should strike first before Robert even died. He was not afraid to be both kind and ruthless when the time was right. Hell and after he created the best chance for victory with his Highgarden alliance and at least neutral and friendly stance with the Stark's. He also worked on the small council before and had experience knowing how to actually rule in peace time.

In the books, Renly was a lot like Robert (both physically and personality wise), just a bit smarter and more politically savvy. Renly likely would’ve succumbed to the same shortsightedness that Robert did.
The shortsightedness of Robert is what drove Renly to rebel in the first place to prove he can become a better king than Roberts

Not sure why Varys didn't try to back Renly. He was gentler than Stannis, but stronger than Tommen, and with the right family name. He is loved by the people and nobles, and he is decent at the game. Quite unfortunate that he died.
The show doesn't really make anything of it, but to astute book readers there are many clues that Varys is a lesser scion of the Targaryen house, probably a descendant of Aerion brightflame. He's a Targaryen loyalist at heart. Hence his pact with Illyrio Mopatis, _"Red or Black, a Dragon is still a Dragon."_ In the books he backs (f)Aegon. In the show, Denaerys.

I liked the character of Renly. He wasn't really a great man. But he was a reasonable one. Didn't really enjoy fighting or bloodshed but he knew how to put on a good front. And he wasn't quick to temper or overly-concerned with how people saw him. In his mind so long as they never saw his true self, the self that loved other men, then he didn't give a damn what people thought of his false persona that he wore around.
That gave him a genuine advantage over the egotistical and narcissistic competition for the crown. He was never blinded by a desire to been seen as something more than he was. But he knew what he was and what he could gain. He understood how to use the advantages of his bloodline to take something great for himself.
As a king he would have done quite well. Quite fair, well-tempered, not a shred of cruelty or hatred in him. He'd have stacked his council with decent leaders and gone about a good life.
Renly seemed like a good guy honestly. He didn't really have good claims on the throne but I'm sure he would be a pretty good king.

Realistically, if we were going to ignore Melisandre's little deus ex machina, Renly would have crushed Stannis (Renly's vanguard alone greatly outnumbered Stannis' entire force), waited for the Lannisters and Starks (his army was bigger than both combined) to wear each other out, then win without much trouble.
Renly even offered that he could be "King of the North" as long as he bowed to Renly. It was the most generous result the North/Riverlands could have gotten.
This scene alone easily tops most stuff in season 8....
In retrospective, Loras was a fucking Great warrior for have given Brienne such a challenge.
