  • Jaime told Brienne that there are only 3 people in the kingdoms that stand a chance at beating him in a sword fight. Which 3 people do you think he was referring to?

      You are correct about the final twelve, but my three MIGHT be:
      If Syrio is anything like this guy, I'd go with Syrio, Gregar Clegane, and Barristan Selmy, Gregar is a TANK! Barristan does everything like a boss, quitting, fighting, understanding how his own life could be so causally lost defending the crown
      The saddest part of all three of these characters is how 'little' we see of them in action:

      It's not clear if Oberyn was the better fighter, or he just had an advantage because he was using a different weapon and a fast-acting poison. IIRC IRL duels tended to require both participants to use the same weapons, because it was ultimately a test of skill, not strategies. Not to say that Oberyn wasn't the better fighter, but you can't necessarily use their duel as proof of Oberyn being more skilled than Gregor.

      Like 70% of actual fighting is all about the willingness to do grievous harm to another human being. That's why they train you with pugle sticks in the military (the US Marines, at least - I assume they do it elsewhere) - they don't expect you to be rushing into battle with a giant q-tip - it's all about aggression. To knock over the other person, you have to get right up into them and act tenaciously. Everything else - like technique or skill or experience - comes into play afterwards.
      Greg is a big bastard who could wield a claymore in one hand and had no mental block whatsoever regarding hurting people, that's literally all you need. Andre the Giant was not even close to as aggressive or sadistic (by all accounts, he was a good dude), but he was close to that size and just look up people telling stories of him getting into fights. It's no contest.

    @BeWe1510 4 года назад +20

    For me it would be:
    Baristan Selmy: Obviously Jaime still admires him, he is the only one who he could lose to and not be ashamed
    Thoros of Myr: Everyone involved in the battle seems to be impressed by his actions at the breach of pyke, so you have to assume that Jaime is too. That combined with the fact that Thoros is still great makes me think, that he is one of the 3
    The third person is difficult. For me there are three candidates
    Oberyn Martell: He is a legend in Dorne, where the competition is tough, Jaime knows of his skills for sure. But when Tyrion asks him if he thinks that Oberyn has a chance against the Mountain, Jaime doesn’t seem to actually think that.
    Loras Tyrell: He has beaten Jaime in the last tournament before the events of the show, so he seems like an obvious choice but when he talks to Brienne they are talking about swordfights and Loras has beaten him in the joust. It looks like Jousting ist a big strength of Loras because when Sansa is worried about him, Ned calms her down by saying how good he can ride, not by saying how good of a fighter he is. So I think Jaime sees Loras as a worthy foe in the Joust but not in a sword fight.
    So my top 3 is: Ser Baristan Selmy, Thoros of Myr, Ser Gregor Clegane
    Btw.: I am only halfway through the first book, so this really is a show perspective

      He's going to need that initial mass of troops to get up in their stuff and fix the enemy in that location, he can rely on subordinates to get those guys motivated (at sword point if need be) to engage and advance - I wouldn't call it a distraction exactly, but it's something like that.
      I assume he did the job that was more intensive in terms of maneuvering and timing. Just look how easily he defeated the mountain before getting killed. His speed, range and most importantly fighting style seems to be very effective against the more conventional shield and sword style of combat that is prevalent in the seven kingdoms. To believe that he would be just as effective against pretty much any other conventional fighter wouldn't be such a big leap to make.

      100% agree. The problem comes down to timing and knowledge. Until the fight with the mountain, Jamie has no idea exactly how good Oberyn is/was. Given Jamie's arrogance and quite frankly, the true knowledge that he was top level means that until Jamie has seen proof, he believes he is the better fighter. In truth, I believe that after the fight with the Mountain, Jamie is happy he never had to fight Oberyn. The problem is that Jamie didn't have that knowledge when traveling with Brienne. Thus he would not have had Oberyn on his list.

    When it comes to ranking The Mountain people always bring up his fight with Oberyn... Not to discount The Viper's skill, but keep in mind he spent years planning his revenge on The Lannisters and Clegane. If you train for years to beat a giant, you're probably going to beat a giant. Or get your head crushed like a melon at the last second.
    And it's not like Jaimie says in the show there are three guys that'll definitely beat him in a one on one fight, he says there are three guys that might beat him in a fight. It's perfectly reasonable to assume that he would include the guy capable of splitting him in half with a single swing of his sword as having a chance at beating him. I'd say Selmy, and those Clegane boys are the three that Jaimie is thinking of when he says that there are three men in Westeros who might be able to beat him in a fair fight.

    Jamie mentioned he was at Pike at the same fight Throros was at. So he would have seen the fight that Jorah (who isn't easily impressed) fanboying in the clip you provided. Don't get me wrong, I doubt Jamie just dismisses the Hound. But generally the Lannisters don't seem to respect the hound nearly as much as his older brother. The Hound is really just treated like a glorified body guard and that is about all. So i would wager Jamie would give higher esteem to the person he saw in battle over the family guard dog.

      That's pretty much what he says in the book. Jamie is a better swordsman than the hound, even though the hound is really good. But the hound would still probably beat him just due to size and brute strength. Also little known fact is Theon Greyjoy is one of the best fighters, better than John Snow, but he's good with the bow and arrow. Since we are only talking about a one on one sword fight it leaves Theon out, but if we are talking about overall combat ability Theon would be in the top three, at least before he was castrated.

However, what we do see is Jaime essentially walking on egg shells nervously around the man. Gregor Clegane is the only person who is shown to legitimately intimidate Jaime Lannister. Even Selmy doesn't do that, and it's pretty obvious what Jaime thinks of Selmy's prowess. Also, when Jaime and Tyrion are speaking of Oberyn prior to the fight with Gregor, he says that Oberyn is going to die. So.... if Oberyn is in the top 3... Gregor is in the top 2.
      Finally on Gregor, you can't really judge his skill (or lackthereof) on that fight with Oberyn. Oberyn was fighting in a style that few in Westeros would be familiar with. As such, they wouldn't be ready to defend against it. They would all be hacking and slashing wildly whenever Oberyn came into range, just as Gregor did. However, Jaime's skill is with the sword... which is the same skill Gregor has. Gregor cut down a few of the men stated in this video, and chased a couple of the top contenders away (including Thoros and Loras). If Jaime had to fight the Mountain one-on-one with swords... the Mountain has a real chance. In fact, I'd actually give him the edge in that fight. He's a greatly skilled swordsman who has major advantages of strength and reach, whereas Jaime would have the advantage of speed and maybe stamina.
      Meanwhile, Jaime knows of Sandor's fear of fire, and can/would use that against him. So it's possible that Sandor isn't in the top 3... though I personally believe he is.

    • @Unlitedsoul
      @Unlitedsoul 6 лет назад +3

      You make a damned good point. The only counter I could possibly make to that is the same point bridge made in the video. He's never seen Oberyn fight. He's also said several times before that he never judges a fighter's ability until he sees them fight. Jaime has also made the point that any man can obtain a reputation as a great fighter without really earing it, so he doesn't include reputation into his judgements. He made this point about Ned directly, as Jaime always questioned whether Ned could have truly beaten Dayne. That said, Jaime also makes the statement that Oberyn is going to die against Gregor. So, he obviously ranks Oberyn below Gregor going into that fight. Which turned out to be the case, as Gregor actually won that fight due to Oberyn's cockiness and showmanship that often comes with learning one's skills in the fighting pits like a gladiator.
      That said... you could be right. He just might mean Oberyn. I personally think it's Selmy and the Clegane boys... but Sandor may not be the third due to his fear of fire, and that's a weakness Jaime could easily manipulate. My thoughts are also that Loras Tyrell could be the third, despite how Jaime mocks him. That mockery often reminded me of a way to downplay one's own worries of a possible threat.

  • @KingOfKingz819
    @KingOfKingz819 4 года назад +7

    Jaime always seemed to put great fighters on a pedestal, so it wouldn't be so crazy for him to believe Oberyn would be in that 1/3 without seeing him fight. You could def flip The Hound and The Red Viper, but I do agree that Gregor and Barristan are locked in at 1 and 2

    • @kylethekidable
      @kylethekidable 5 лет назад +2

      +bridge4 my argument for syrio would be that he would know him as one of the greatest dancers of braavos which is a pretty clout heavy title, not exactly bullshit and politics, if you were considered the best there then you could drop just about anyone in the city. Secondly, knowing that the guy would likely be very top tier of any fighters in the 7 kingdoms, he could also assume syrio may be able to take him based on his very different fighting style. Most of the knights in westeros used the templar style with wide sweeping movements and the occasional hilt attacks when locked in close, syrio, with his dancing style, was more of a fencer with agility. Think oberyn but not as showy, he'd do some flourish to bat away an attack and fancy spin his way in for an up close puncture through the gut and that would likely be a fighting style jamie had rarely encountered.
      Another person made a good point that based on wording it would also be reasonable to assume he wouldn't count anyone who he thought as flat out better. He put ser barristen in such high regard that it could be assumed he thought he was better than himself by far. So I'd go with syrio and th cleganes. The mountain is sloppy and bullish, but between his strength and jamie still being of the straightforward templar fighting style, it would be possible for the mountain to throw him off balance and land a hit. Given his strength, one hit is all it could take, hell one punch from flat on his back knocked half oberyns teeth out and he used his bare hands to burst his head like an overripe cantaloup. The hond on the other hand is probably 2/3 as strong as his brother, probably a good bit faster, and also fights plenty dirty ( the mountain really didnt because he believed his bullrushes were good enough to win, no dirty moves needed). That would mean he could potentially overpower jamie while possibly being fast enough to not get caught by some quick moves from him, and realistically, if he thought he was losing he'd just lock swords and kick jamies nuts out through his mouth and then take advantage of jamie being off balance.

As he removes his sword, everyone else takes a defensive pose and Barristan let's out, "Even now I could cut through the five of you like carving a cake." Barristan new it and so did the rest of them. That says it all.

    Locke is based on Vargo Hoat, isn't he? Amory Lorch actually shows up in the series by name.
    3:52
    Well, Robb says to Jaime's face that the Kingslayer would beat him in a duel.
    In any case, I can agree with your three selections for the most part. Jaime is very aware of the advantages that Gregor's immense size and strength grant him and the man's an anointed knight. He also obviously holds Barristan Selmy in very high regard; the only question is whether he would have felt by this time that Selmy's old age had gotten the better of him.
    Sandor's a little trickier. I imagine Jaime has been around long enough to respect his strength and skill... but the guy isn't a knight, technically speaking (Jaime isn't aware that The Hound was brought into the Kingsguard at this point). To someone like Jaime who hasn't developed a respect for non-knighted fighters yet like Brienne and Bronn, I can see that clouding his judgement. In the narrated lore scenes, Jaime considers Sandor's name to be a stain on the Kingsguard and dismisses him in the same class as Meryn Trant and Boros Blount. Though his words should be taken in context, as he's insulting Sandor for fleeing King's Landing during Stannis's siege.
    So if you *do* discount Sandor, I think Loras is the next obvious choice. Jaime has seen him (and been defeated by him) at tourneys, both in the joust and melee. I also can't help but remember the two Lannister sentries at Oxcross discussing (just prior to getting ambushed by Grey Wind) who they believe to be the greatest fighters in the Kingdoms. Gregor and Jaime's name comes up and one of them mentions Loras, arguing that "he's better with a sword than any of them". His comrade dismisses him, though it's mainly to make an insult about Loras' sexuality. The fact that random Lannister soldiers that should presumably hold both Jaime and Gregor in high esteem consider Loras's prowess to be comparable is worth noting.
    So I think Gregor, Selmy, and Loras would be my top three picks for the men Jaime is most likely referring to. Sandor is perhaps not all that far behind, though in all honesty I think Thoros is an honorable mention given the fact that he's made a name for himself in tournament melees as well as in major battles.

    • @davidhagberg6118

      The Mountain fought in the sack of kings landing and The war of the five kings proving he can take on multiple soldiers, he is even remarked for being a fast man for his size. And for his size alone he is realistically in another class than jamie its just to much of an advantage. Gregor isnt the kind of guy waiting for a lucky hit, he charges head on with his double-handed sword .
      Oberyn got the better of him cuz his way of fighting is diffrent and unkowned to the mountain. Jamie is a westerosi hack and slash knight and could be one of many the mountain have split in half. Maybe and probably Jamie has a better sword technique but in real life some people just have those Uber-powerman genetics and that alone gives the mountain such an unfair advantage that he wins atleast 60% of the time due to advantage of pure size. I mean the man is as big as two of Jamie, its unfair that he should win given Jamie probably have superior skills but that just reflects real life, Jamie could work his sword skills until the day he dies but against the mountain he will always have an unfair disadvantage.

      Do you remember that look of dissappointment when the guard interrupted their fight.
      It was a joy, it was a sight to behold, it reminded Jaime of Barriston the Bold. He thusted, he parried, the creepy smile on his face was a bit scary. Without a conclusion, it would stay in his mind, the truth of the matter must be defined.

    My boy oberyn was playing around with the mountain.
    Technically the mountain couldn't even put a blow on him.
    Oberyn infact defeated him but his emotions got to him.

      The series was about schemes, fighters are there to die while the shcemers play them like chess pieces.

      Oberyn defeated himself in the end. A person can do that to himself sometimes. The fight was already won.

    Great video! Minor point: I think Locke was based on Vargo Hoat in the books, not Amory Lorch. Lorch was actually in the show.

    I love how you placed the characters at 0:26 like in Mortal Kombat xD
