Been riding with a 1040 Solar since a week after it was released. LOVE IT! Rarely ever have to think about charging it, even up here in the Gloomy PNW! I have to say that brighter screen for my vision would be AMAZING. For me, I'd only miss the long battery life on one or two rides a year and I'd still have my Solar. I'll wait till I see one in the wild. Everything else on the 1050 I would want will be pushed to my 1040 so...undecided at the moment.

I agree with you. The 1040 is getting the same software features which make it much better deal. The lower battery life is also a minus for me. The speaker and brighter screen are nice but not enough for me to upgrade.

The 1040 actually just came off sale about a week ago. Garmin had the 540, 840 and 1040 on sale for almost an entire month, both standard and solar versions. I thought it was odd timing to run a sale at the start of summer and because the 540/840 just came out last year. $50 off the 540/840 and I believe $70 off the 1040 - both solar and non solar. I wouldn't be surprised to see more sales later in the year.

@@thomaskuhn6541 thank you for your reporting! I understand the need for extreme battery life is a niche market. I think you’re right if the 1050 sells well and the 1040 Solar starts to build excess inventory they will put them on sale again. That would be great because for now I have no interest in a 1050

I would have like to see Garmin come out with something closer to the 130 like a 140 with more options for the more modern electronic bikes. When my 830 glass started lifting off the body I started searching for a new bike computer. I didn't care for the 540 so I bit the bullet on the 840. I really don't need all the training data it offers but some options I do like and I would like to see those options on a lower model. I only use Speed, Cadence, Radar, Di2, and Heart Rate, and finally Gears. Of coarse Distance, Speed, Time, those general bits that are on even a $20 bike computer. There is just a lot of options about health, climbing, sharing, etc. that I don't need. Garmin didn't need to create the 1050 when something better in the lower range would be more welcome to a large number of cyclists.
I have to add this, the cost and life of the models. My 830 only lasted about 4 years before the glue that held the glass on failed. Batteries are only good for a number of charging cycles. At the prices of these high end models, are they worth it. I hate having to replace my smart phone every 4 years because they are so expensive. I'm still using the iPhone 11 but it's getting close to that time when I'm going to have to shell out another $900 or more. I guess if you want the tech you have to pay to play but I think Garmin could offer a more affordable model that has the options the people want.
One year ago I bought the Garmin EPIX Pro watch for $1100. I still don't know what to do with over half of the features so it's kind of meaningless. I realize now I could have went with something far less. It doesn't compliment the bike computer like I thought it would.

Bought the lezyne mega XL on sale last summer for the battery 48hour charge and has features that other cycling Gps just getting at budget levels. If had the money would go for garmin 1040 or 540 solar. The mega xl is starting to fall behind now in climb pro standard (not strava premium required for mega xl) or color screen plus app that needs rework after some years.

@@markifi Mega xl is 5-6 years old now released in 2018 so ahead of it’s time when put on sale. Now behind in some areas. Back then these were common issues for gps. Being late signaling a turn leaving not enough time on busy traffic road. But fine on less busy roads and off tarmac. Some mapping not matching route from other sources off pavement due lack data from satellite with thick forest cover or too many sudden temporary logging roads in one area. If home area best remember local roads and trails layout and traffic patterns. Or go old school if possible paper map of unknown area you are in your riding in. Lezyne is engineering focused company on quality long lasting products not a marketing based with a new model with minor changes every 1-2 years as so is many others. Hopefully they are working on a new models with a new top range computer that will be ahead of the current standards with solar for a budget friendly price and better support app that will give Garmin and wahoo a challenge in sales.

@@sccxvelo thanks but age of the device isn't an excuse for them if the navigation is lacklustre. my garmin 520 is from 2015 and it alerts consistently within 10-15 metres of taking a wrong turn. almost better than a smartphone i'd say. i do like the lezyne's comparatively low consumption. i know a bit about the device because i almost bought it myself at the time. the dealbraker was if i have a multi day route in and turn the device off for the evening, in the morning the route wouldn't automatically resume when turning it back on. I have the 1030 Plus and when the screen is shaded by my body or when I ride in the woods, the screen is totally useless. The screen of the 1050 is the biggest selling point to upgrade. The LCD screen also has higher resolution, more vibrant colors, and better contrast. When I get the 1050 I will enable battery saver for the screen brightness, and that will certainly increase the battery life.

I use an 840 solar which if I'm not mistaken is functionally the same as the 1040 solar with the exception of having a smaller battery and screen (thus also smaller solar panels/glass), and more physical buttons. Still over 50% more battery life than the 1050, and for me the screen size works just fine. I've always been curious about having a bigger screen to see more data, but if I decide to try a 10xx unit it will be the 1040 solar.
I see the 1050 as being a draw for those who use maps a ton, or want a techy piece of kit for their bike. I'm not sure I'd want a big, bright screen on my bike. It's one of the few times in life I can get away from screens! Simple is good :)
