Heavy for racing uphill, still looking for some carbon new model, afraid i can find just some Chinese :-(
My progress has been parallel, but I haven't lost as much as I should. At 6'2" in the early 2000s, I weighed 230. Began progressively bike commuting and exercising. I've kept my weight around 190, and can't quite find the motivation to drop 10 more. Anyway, going from 38 inch waist to 34 afforded me the chance to renew my wardrobe. 😂
@@johnduggan4993 well done John! As spring turns to summer you’ll drop those last 10 lbs this year.
Sounds eerily familiar. Pre-COVID, I was 5'10" and 210 lbs. Fortunately I had a decent bike. After getting back into cycling I dropped about 50 lbs through riding and eating right. I had to throw out ALL of my 38-inch trousers though 🤒 Bicycles are magical machines!

Helpful as seems I need between a Competition and Sport but now sure which as the more volume of the Competition mucks things up. I like room for my toes as have worked to spread them out for running, use a Topo show with a roomy tow box, but have a low volume foot and narrow heel. Wanting more toe room seems to rule out the Race

Good video. Time for a Goodwill trip
Oh yes!
First. I have a similar story. Was at one point 210lbs and almost died of having pneumonia, colitis, and bronchitis at the same time. After literally surviving I decided I couldn't continue and got my old Allez out and started riding with friends and doing workout plans. Now I'm 180lbs but with a lot of muscle mass as my sport is track cycling (gotta be bulky). The journey is astounding but a proud moment for me in my life is being fitter than I was as a high schooler active in scholastic sports
Congratulations for taking charge of your health and fitness! Thanks for watching
I think you said the sealant is good for 3-6 months. Correct?
Yes that’s what the Stan’s label says. Your mileage may vary YMMV 😂
Eight bikes in the garage for us all on tubeless. Road, mountain and gravel. I keep a clipboard in the garage with each bike listed on it and write down when sealant was put in to keep track of them. Every three months or so, I check and replenish as needed. I remove the valve core and stick a spoke in to check if there’s liquid in there and how much. Eventually I’ll pull a tire off to patch a puncture from the inside and I’ll scrape off any old dried sealant if it’s built up. I’ve been doing this for years with great results. Orange Seal Endurance sealant has worked the best. Bring along a Dynaplug to plug the punctures that are too big for the sealant to stop. We have other bikes that rarely get ridden for months on end. Those bikes get tubes.
This sounds like a well thought out strategy! I will pin your comment for other folks to see it first. It’s pretty much the way I do it.
Hey George, I wouldn't beat yourself up too much. Shit happens to everyone. I'm sorry you went down. Your crash record is still awesome, meaning it almost never happens. Some riders it's 3 crashes a year, year after year. Pine cones, rocks and other junk can be a serious problem. Yeah, we all gotta call that stuff out. And you were thrown out of your groove because your head started out solo in mind. I seek group rides but yeah, you need to prepare your mind for that. And riding close with an unfamiliar rider is inherently dangerous. I'm always on extra high alert at those times because that's when stuff often goes south. Planets were in alignment for you. Fortunately it was a fairly minor mishap. Ride safe, bro.
Hello Dean thanks for watching! Yes there is a completely different mindset between group riding and solo riding. Thankfully, the gap between crashes is about 5 years so about 50,000 miles. Unfortunately, they are quite significant. In 2014 I broke my right femur 🦴 I’m 2019 I broke 5 ribs my scapula and my acromion. So I was due 😂
I use standard tubes for my three bikes, I always carry two tubes with me.
That sounds sensible 😊
omg - why? would you do that? -maniscalco
😂 😂
Great service. Only these rusty bolts bothered me :-). I would replace them if it was me. (Just sharing my opinion to whom never asked hahaha)
Ha ha I don’t worry about silly shit like that and neither does the customer. There is no safety issue nor do you see while riding. It’s funny people point out stupid things like rusted bolts and I’m like really? 😂
I do bike maintenance every last Saturday of the month. Charging everything, waxing my chains , wiping things down on all my bikes. Every other month I add sealant, clean up the valves and pipe cleaner the valve stems.
Boom! Well done mate!
My feet just slipped into these without any trouble, good buy 👍
Boom! 💥 Thank You for the feedback! Please consider subscribing
Bike came out good. Shimano crank recall has to be a hard call for shops. Shops have to spend extra time doing services they we're not planning on. Possibly send passing crank back out that could fail next day or week back to customer which is lawsuit risk. Or just say not risk it sending it back as mapdec shop in UK does to keep their customers safe and avoid potential lawsuits. All this because shimano did not want to fix this problem years ago when first spotted. Now a bunch of extra wok for shops to handle due to poor QC. Hope the crank holds up for the customer.
I’m surprised he can send them back. You’re only supposed to send them back when there is a defect. But whatever… it’s really a non issue anyway
So you talked the owner into switching to larger tires, don't forget to tell him to check he is running the correct pressure also, it will be less with the 28mm. I also am still using that Shimano 9000 crankset. It is part of the recalled batch but I inspect it and don't see any issue with it. I've even replaced the chainrings. I'm going to use it until it dies.
It’s really a non issue that people have blown out of proportion
They have a unsanctioned ride , the length of vermont, each year , its 212 miles,
Sounds fun! That’s the stuff I live for. Do you have a link for the un sanctioned ride? Website? I’d Ride with GPS?
What a great video, i have multiple bikes and multiple wheels, i was scared to go tubeless, but wanted to try it , I was riding with a friend, fast friend, drafting him, and i said hey, Aaron you got a puncture, he stopped, lifted up the back of his bike and twurled his wheel, and we were back cycling, I was sold, so i went tubeless with one set , and ive had no problems, but i put that bike away and now im back riding it, and im concerned about the sealant, thanks for the info
You’re Welcome ! The bigger the tires the lower the pressure the better tubeless will work. Thank you for watching. Please consider subscribing
These pre and post service videos are quite interesting and highlight a lot of tips for preventative maintenance. Thanks
@@dorohmc I’m really happy you’re getting value out of them!! Thank You for making me feel good about continuing the series.
TPU inner tubes are great and light just don’t use them in the mountains on rim brake wheels, they will melt and can cause you to go down.
That’s a great tip. I know Tubolito has rim and disc specific tubes. What are your thoughts on that?
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad Ridenow says theirs are safe for rim brakes, too. I haven't had problems with them overheating on road rim brake wheels.
I used RideNow and blue generic Chinese in the dolomites in Italy and both melted and lost air, I switched to rubber for mountain riding and still use TPU on rolling hills.
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad I venture to say all TPU tubes will perform similarly, you don’t want to test that bombing down the mountain at 50mph which is how I found out. No crashes though but I bottomed out on a rim so it’s rubber or disc brakes for mountains for me. Rims can get pretty damn hot when you’re scraping a lot of speed quickly.
Have you tried TPU tubes George? I’ve read some folks say it has a pretty good ride quality and more durable than typical tubes - also easily repairable with a TPU patch.
@@brandonsouba yes I wasn’t impressed. First ride out I double flatted a $60 experiment. I find tubeless a much better solution
I am a fan of both tubeless, and TPU tubes. Skinny tired bikes get tubes, but the 34c road, and 40c gravel tyres get the milk….
I think that’s a good balance.
Usually it’s enough to spin the wheels at high speed on a workstand to find out if there are dried clumps of sealant as they will cause a big imbalance which shows as jumping when the wheel is spinning. Some sealants dry much faster than others. Orange is maybe one of the fastest to dry up and it forms exactly these kind of clumps. Stans Regular stays in liquid form for a long long time but on the other hand it doesn’t seal punctures nearly as effectively as Orange. I only have two bikes with a total of three wheelsets in active use. Every now and then I’ll shake and spin the wheels currently not in use to prevent sealant from drying up. Anyway tubeless is best for the bikes in active use.
@@anttibusk4401 It’s worth noting that I once poured 14 different sealants into small Dixie cups to observe their evaporation rate and other behaviors. Stan’s did take twice as long to dry out, but when it did it weighed nearly twice as much as dried Orange Seal. Stan’s leaves a much thicker layer of latex behind and is so much harder to peel off. This also depends on the tire, it’s incredibly easy to peel Orange Seal off a Grand Prix 5000 S TR while removal from other tires is more time consuming.
Great sensible tips thank you for sharing.
Thank You for chiming in. I always think of you when I use Orange Seal for my personal tires.
Tried tubeless, for me it was a horrible experience. Kept getting sealant spayed all over my bike then having to clean it off. Went back to TPU tubes with Mr Tuffy. As far as I can tell the only people that love tubeless, are bike shops, tubeless gives them an endless revenue stream. Also MTB riders who use very low tire pressures.
Interesting using TPU with tire liners. Some might argue that you have negated the two major selling points of TPU - supposed ride quality and lightweight Funny but as a bike shop I often dissuade riders from tubeless. When I tell them that every 3-6 months the sealant needs some sort of maintenance they realize it’s not for them.
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad TPU Tube with a liner is still significantly lighter than a regular tube. Lose about 0.3 Watts over just TPU tubes. I am too old to go fiddling around with flats on the side of the road. My racing days were over when Regan was president.
I have been tubeless on my gravel and touring bike for about 6 years. On my currentl trip to Thailand ive had enoough issues I went to tube in tye rear. I just couldn't keep pressure and regularly had sealant spraying everywhere. First real issue but it's enormous pain in the but when problems arise. It seems heat does not treat sealants well.
So glad you made this video, I haven’t checked the air in my TPU tubes in months! It might have gone bad? 🥺
Ha ha well played 🤣
OK.From that angle, i don't think there is enough clearance for 28mm tyres on the down tube...or i might be wrong
There is plenty of clearance. The new tires are installed and the bike rides great.
Hi George, a great video! I recently got a pair of new r9100 shifters which may stocked for many years, when I shift their small lever it doesn't have a clear click sound but the big lever clicks well, may it caused by some dried lube etc?
Report, some wd-40 and several lever strokes bring the clicks back.
I use a cleaner lube. WD-40 is not really lube it’s for water displacement. I’d go back in and but a dollop of lightweight grease in the gearing for longevity
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad Thanks for the advice! I'll try PTFE spray or light cable grease later when I clean it completely.
@ You’re Welcome and my pleasure. Please share my video/s
It seems you’ve trained your audience too well in the past. Your change and adoption of Tubeless has us floored. 😂
Turns out road tubeless is really good once you gain a bit of experience. People give up on it too early and often due to user error or really bad luck.
You’re going to fool with your tires no matter what. I’d rather spend time setting it up in the shop vs on the side of the road with a tube
Yes sir. It wasn’t until I personally went to 30 tires that tubeless started to work for me.
That’s a common way to convince someone to go tubeless. Tubed flats can be very inconvenient while tubeless is usually at home.
Once I went to 30mm tires and 65 psi things got a lot better.
I'm another one that went from tubes to tubeless and back to tubes. The OCD in me wants to pick out every bit of dried sealant when I crack open the tires. Tubes are just easier for me to deal with 👍
Yes sir! OCD is a bitch 😂
I found my system. I quit using tubeless. I've never had a puncture that would seal, seems like they were always in the sidewall of the tire. A lot of the roads have been chipsealed and in the Winter they use what we call ash to treat slippery roads which makes for debris that cuts tires. I don't have a Sag Wagon to call in an emergency to pick me up so the most reliable coarse of action is to carry several tubes and patches and a pump. It's the one "Old School" technology that will always work 100%.
Tubeless is essentially what you make of it. If you start with Stan’s, Muc-Off, Silca Ultimate sealant and Stan’s Darts / “bacon strips”, you’re going to hate it. If you do research by searching old threads on MTBR, you’re going to go straight to Orange Seal + DynaPlugs and have a much better experience.
Because it always does come back to the noble tube anyway!
Conti GP5000 TL got it mostly right. Creating a tire that holds air without a sealant. The tubeless ready system that requires sealant to hold air isn't ideal. If I was to go tubeless I would want a tire that holds air and just carry a sealed bottle of sealant, or plug, that I can put into the tire when need. But for me I'm sticking with my Revoloop Race.Ultra TPU tubes.
I still have a couple of TL tires hanging around 😂
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad best try them before the rubber wears out
I have a system - it's called tubes. 😁
@@barrytantlinger1033 Niice! 😂
First of all, know that I subscribed just a few weeks ago, and I really like your vids, your point of view, etc, all good! But I have to say that I am so happy that TPU tubes are available-save a bit of weight, somewhat smaller chance of a puncture, life is good. Tubeless just seems such a PITA, I am glad to have a middle ground that's better than a conventional tube.
@@daveclark8788 Thank You for your subscription!! Yeah TPU is good for some folks. I can’t get behind them. Tubeless is so much easier for me now.
Given the number of bikes I own that hang for weeks on end between rides, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze to change from tubes to tubeless sealant.
Yep I had riders like you and me in mind when I shot this video. Thanks for watching
As you live your bicycle ownership journey, treat your self to the best bicycle bell on the market...... The Spurcycle bell. Hear me now, it is the chris king hub of bells! Using a spurcycle is like flying first class. Once you do, you just can''t go back to coach (or yelling out "on yer left"!) Doing so will feel, somehow brutish and an inferior bell's tone will seem ugly. "When a keeper of the cog dies, and is found to have lived a worthy life, he will arrive in Valhalla atop a white Ritchey Ti Road Logic with rim brake and perfect mechanical Dura Ace. A single tone of the spurcycle bell shall call him home and open the gates ."
That was awesome! It made me laugh. Now I I’m intrigued! I have to find a Spurcycle bell. 🛎️ 😂
keep on with the bike profiles. Thanks.

Talk a little about those rear brakes - will normal, center mount brakes work? Are they a pain to adjust? I think Look had the hidden brake design too... Nice bike though 👍
I’m not a fan of brakes mounted to the bottom bracket. They almost always have inferior stopping power and most definitely have a shortened lifespan. They corrode, they get impacted with sand and dirt and don’t work effectively it’s just a terrible design to save a couple of watts if any.
But that saddle clamp design can be a pain
I agree it’s not the best design, but it is what it is.
1:47 nooooooo! Fat tyres? On a “road bike?” And tubeless? 🤮
😂 😂 😂
I like the wheelset aluminum brake track.
Yes rim brakes for the win
George please explain why it's not good to yell on your left to walker. IMO using a bell doesn't tell them what side you'll be passing on. Even though we know you should pass on the left when possible. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong thanks
@@tmayberry7559 I responded to another commenter about this topic. But I’ll add here almost never while using a bell do I have pedestrians veer left into my travel. If you are not directly behind them and to their left and they are walking on a bike path their brain can discern where the bell sound is coming from. I’m surprised this is even a point of discussion or contention with folks on this channel 🤷♂️ Get a bell, trust me your results will be significantly better than yelling “on your left” 😂
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad okay I'll try it. However, the results I get are just the opposite. They will do one of three things. 1 they will move to the right. 2 they will move to the left or 3 they will stop right in front of me Believe it or not some people don't know their left from their right 🤣🤣🤣 I'll try to start using a bell maybe I'll make a video called on your left vs bell 🤣
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad btw thanks for the explanation
I've found that yelling "on your left" causes some people to overthink it (mostly people who aren't super comfortable on their bike and momentarily forget their right from their left). I generally just yell out "passing", and they're cool with that and move over to the right if they're not already over there.
@@tmayberry7559 do it and the video! 😂 Yes I’ve had some people just stop walking too 😂
I ahve that exact set and have ridden the beejeesus out of them. They were so good I bought a second set for climbing and just bought a 3rd set for my new build. The blue ones come with that wheelset. I niow use Wheelstop brake pads for carbon rims.
@@triatheletewolf7279 so great to hear from another user that has these wheels! Thanks for watching. Please consider subscribing.
Teach me, why do you prefer a bell over 'on your left" ? Not every rider is aware of the unwritten 'pass on the left" rule & how does ringing a bell inform the rider in front of that ?
Thank you I appreciate your question. In my non-scientific studies I have found that ringing a bell for pedestrians brings a smile to their face as I’m passing them from behind. Riders on pedal bikes and eBikes also seem to yield to the right without much fanfare. It’s just a personal thing, but I dislike yelling at riders or pedestrians on your left because in many cases inexperience riders tend to look over their left shoulder because the only thing they hear is the word “left“ and as they look over their left shoulder, the bike veers to the left directly into my path.
I have that bike and have had shifting and rubbing issues for the front derailleur. They didn’t come with front barrel adjusters. Weird.
The bike builder can install an in-line cable adjuster in the initial build or when you get your cable replaced. I will be doing the service on the bike today. I wonder if I will have front derailer issues like you mentioned.
