So I started looking at other brands, and it came down to the Wahoo and Karoo. Then in July 2023, Garmin offered the Edge 1030 plus on sale (Prime Day?) for $309.99. Is the Li-Ion battery replaceable in the 1050? Something that complies with upcoming right-to-repair requirements (EU, etc.) would be a BIG thing that would cause me to upgrade/switch! I'm getting so tired of disposable electronic gadgets that won't hold a charge after a few years...

    But to be honest what would make me upgrade from my x30 series to a new edge isn't a fancy screen, but if they could implement inReach functionality into the unit. I go on plenty of epic rides where there's no cell coverage, and carrying an inReach + edge kinda sucks. Now THAT would be something I'd pay top end iPhone money for.

      how often do you ride 20-30h? Let's say you ride 5h a day, and that is a lot and no one except of pros do this kind of volume. That gives you 4days worst case /p cycle. Now 4 days *500 cycles =2000days (do you cycle every single day?) to get to 80% of initial cpapcity and ~15h of battery life worst case.
      Your device will be long time obsolete before you will ruin your battery man :)
      Battery chemistry over time is another thing, but that's the same if you have 40h expected life or 20h so let's not dive into that right now.

    Big question for me is; Do Navigation and Routes actually work yet? It's very frustrating on an 830.
    1) if you load a route, it offers to "navigate to start". If you pick yes, then it actually navigates you to seemingly the nearest waypoint anywhere on the route? Or maybe its that if the route it takes you on then touches the course at all, it flips to "route detected" and starts navigating you from the middle of the route.
    2) If you start a route where the start and finish are the same place (a loop) and you start your ride, and maybe 500 meters in remember you forgot something in your car and go back, it now sees you are at the end and finishes your route. You have to restart the route to get navigation again.
    3) If you have a route that crosses the same point multiple times (like a race that crosses the same water station a couple times by looping back to the same point) the navigation gets confused and will move you forward or backward in the overall route. In other words, if you have a 30mi route, and at 10mi and 20mi, you cross the same point, then when you get to the 20mi point in your ride, Garmin sometimes decides to start navigating you from the 10mi point instead.
    I basically haven't had a single successful navigation experience on my 830. Until Garmin makes basic nav work, and I can stop pulling my phone out of my jersey pocket to load Google Maps to see where I actually am, I don't think upgrading is going to be worth it.

A 15.6mi ride to the train station is at least 21mi on the 1040. Also took the 1000 and the 1040 (23.10 fw) on a ride, recalculations also do the same, always extra distance. Regarding screen brightness, this is not a cell phone, you only look at your bike computer for a fraction of your ride duration. So, nice yes but not so important, plus it bumps up the price and decreases battery life.

    • @Maxwaehrens
      @Maxwaehrens 7 месяцев назад +1

      High screen brightness is important if you want to be able to view the vivid colours of the display in bright sunlight. I guess it's the same argument you have on the Fenix 7 versus the Epix 2, you can go with the Fenix if you want long battery and do not care so much for a good looking display, or you take the Epix if you want a really dam good looking display and don't mind that you need to charge it more often.

    Hey DC, any idea if the Computer/Watch/Connect integration is fixed with this new gen? The x40 offers a bug where calories recorded and imported to Connect are superseded by a garmin watch, and I (and other x40 users) have never gotten accurate calorie data in Connect when also using a watch with Connect. Which renders training readiness features, and much of the ecosystem, useless. The line from Garmin for 1.5 years is “we’re working on it”. Can you shed any light on this?
