    To answer a couple of common questions:
    No, my wedding dress didn’t look (particularly) like this, I got this dress on eBay in 2013 for a Christine Daae costume.
    Yes, Nemo is an adorable cat.
    No, that train isn’t really long enough for rapier and cloak style shenanigans.

      Your assessment is quite accurate, but limited to European / HEMA sword fighting. If you know any wushu / kung fu master ask them about the Chinese lady combat styles. These are both hand-to-hand and jian (straight sword) combat techniques specifically developed for people fighting in tight dress-like garments that limit leg movement and they're quite unique, interesting and fun.

      As someone who is 5'-2", wearing heels saves a bit on having to have the dress hemmed. I'm lucky to find a long dress, even in petite size, that doesn't trail on the ground when I wear it, and if the skirt is full enough, I really can't be arsed to do it myself (not that I'm great at it. Every hem I've sewn so far always gets caught on something and rips), and it's cheaper to pull on a pair of wedges than to hire someone to do it for me.

    • @sealpiercing8476
      @sealpiercing8476 3 года назад +72

      One dramatic phrase that comes to mind is for the skirt wearer to be facing two or three assailants but manage to lunge and fatally stab one (setup for lunge concealed by skirt) and still have a clearly dangerous fight from the remaining assailants. The idea being that the surprise opener took the fight from nearly unwinnable to merely difficult.

      Best Gatling gun surprise since Django.

    • @dynamicworlds1
      @dynamicworlds1 3 года назад +49

      Something to note: even with the hoop skirt, most fighting stances get significantly lower than most dances. If your heroine is expecting it (or just habitually evaluates clothing's combat readiness) a dress/skirt that doesn't go below mid shin would allow for substantially more freedom of movement for low stances (which are more stable) and lunges than a longer one.
      Perhaps bonus style points for what you're going for; slightly shorter hoop skirts tend to be wider and more frilly.
      Just in case any of that fuels more inspiration. If less appropriate (and you want to more play up the hiding the legs part), other fighting styles stand a bit taller and use less deep lunges, so as long as you're staying above ankle-length, you're still in the realm of plausible.

    When you picked and held your dress in one hand, I don't necessarily believe your "off hand is out of the picture." -> some of my wifes dresses have such ridiculously artificial fabric I swear not even a chainsaw would cut through them. Wrapping the fabring around your hand and just grabbing the sword hilt with your hand becomes an awesome (obviously unrealistic, but hey, it's movies) strategy.
    Edit : My wife wore balerina shoes and a very agile dress for our wedding. After this video I suspect she wanted to sword fight me and I, the idiot, got drunk and passed out instead.
