The whole Cinderella live action was worth every penny. It was a perfect mix between the classic with the modern take on it. I watched it the day before I watched the beauty & the beast live action. And i was so sure that bella's dress will be at least close to it. Was really disappointed
the actor of Cinderella had a naturally small waste, but to fit the time line they still did a corset which made Lily James waste come up to a shocking 17 inches. Emma could've easily worn a corset. They were the style back then. I love Emma and how she wants to change Feminism and she is a great actress in Harry Potter, Little Women, etc but she isn't a good actress for a corseted Disney Princess
@@omgimgay3476 Agreed... In my opinion corsets don't deserve their bad reputation too. After all it was just as normal for women at the time, like a bra is to us today. I love Emma, but I just couldn't agree with her on that one :/
It’s pretty,But too..Simple for belle in my opinion her dress is like one of the ‘poofiest’ and the One in the live action is like a pastel golden dress you’ll wear for a special event. While in the animation It’s A shimmering gold with several shades of yellow,But a princess dress is Expensive
Sad fact is, the dress cost a LOT of money. They put thousands of small crystals on top of the dress but it became completely unnoticable. The details weren't showing off as they're supposed to and the expensive crystals didn't spice up the dress, making the dress look dull and cheap ://
Not only was Belle's dress an average-looking dress but also, "Beauty and the Beast" had the misfortune of coming out after "Cinderella" which had the most magical dress transformation
@@rujak_kacang cimderellas live action dress is simply an evidence that you can make changes to an adaptation and still achieve the magic the original source material had if you try hard enough
Cinderalla's dress is jaw dropping and has the wow factor. Belle's? Its underwhelming. Its disappointing since its one of the most iconic dresses in Disney films.
@@vilwarin5635 Cinderella's dress silhouette and its elements are still very reflective of the era but with modern fabric. I can also excuse that since it's made of magic right before our eyes. Belle's dress seems like she found it in the closet and the wardrobe stuck some ceiling glitter around the hem.
Also idk if it's just my poor eyesight, but from far away, her necklace just looked like random twigs, but in close up shots of it, it actually looks really beautiful. I wonder if there would've been a way to do the necklace justice with wide shots
I’m so glad that there are many people who thought Belle’s dress was sadly underwhelming. I was so blind by the hype back then, I didn’t see much. Only the fact “Oh! It’s not accurate…but I guess that can’t hurt, right?” Now that I look at her dress again…I don’t really like the design. The yellow is beautiful, but it just looks like your everyday modern prom dress to me.
I think that's fine tbh. Belle's old dress was ugly as hell and very outdated. I also get with the new dress they were going more for the movement and how the dress looked while moving for the iconic dance.
I have to say her dress looked bland. Less of a “princess” dress and more of a.. long summer dress to the pier. Or... ya... it’s ok. But I couldn’t even say it’s nice looking on her.
She had an unreasonable amount of control in a few decisions concerning Belle. Including switching her grown flats to boots and changing the hair accessories for the ball gown
@@jezreelbullock6280 but this one cannot be given so many permissions and trusts to the actor, the only thing they will achieve is that the director suffers headaches
_Especially_ for her to just change her mind two years later and wear a corset for _Little Women._ Jacqueline Durran was the costume designer for that film as well; I wonder if perhaps Emma Watson discovered just how expendable she was in a mainstream production and acquiesced?
Modifying the dress as a "feminist" concept is just so dumb. It reduces what feminism fights for (like erradicating actual violence against women) to just clothing.
Many celebrities see "Feminist" as a noun rather than a verb. It's all about identity and appearance rather than action. And frustratingly that trickles down into ordinary people too. So we end up having lots of irritating discussions about "Can a feminist do this?" or "Can a feminist do that?" rather than "Is this a feminist act?" It rips all the meaning and purpose out of the movement, and unfortunately I think that's the whole point.
@BİKAS AYM BATMAN yes "Feminist" is literally a noun, but I was making more of a political statement when I said that it's a verb not a noun. I mean that's the attitude we should take.
Imagine if they made a PERFECTLY accurate 1700s dress, with ALL the layers, and just let Emma Watson wear it without a corset. She would’ve put her back out
What they could've done was put the boning in the top part of the dress and it will still give the look of a corset with the support needed like they do modern prom and wedding dresses of today. That dress is hideous.
I was so disappointed by this movie. The dress was uninspired and I actually prefer her cottage outfit and her wedding dress more. I also felt like Emma just didn't portray Belle the way I imagined her to be whereas, Lily's Cinderella was magic.
Lily was amazing as Cinderella. I didn't see her, I saw Cinderella. Whereas in Beauty and the Beast all I saw was Emma playing Belle. She just didn't suit the role
Imma be brutally honest: Emma Watson is a bad actress. Why? Cause she can only play one type of role. Belle was quite out of that comfort zone and made it painfully obvious, pair that with the mistake of letting Emma Watson make decisions for the movie just cause she is famous and...you'll end up with what this....movie is.
Totally agree. The actress and then the dress were a whole disappointment. I was so pissed off by the film especially because I love the cartoon film sm
I feel for the costume designer. Imagine getting that gig, knowing the yellow dress is in your hands, letting your imagination run free and then you're told, sorry, ugly net curtain tent please
Someone said it perfectly: Cinderella's dress is like a wedding dress everyone will be talking about even after the wedding and Belle's dress is the bridesmaids dress that a bride would pick to be sure none of her bridesmaids will look prettier than her. Three years after that movie came out, and I'm still not over that horrible yellow and how color terribly it photographed.
Corsets aren’t oppressive they are undergarments. You can wear a corset without tight lacing. If it was such a problem for her she could have just worn stays
@@lucifernazaedi yeah they were pretty beneficial and helped with supporting you and your outfit. (That is if worn correctly otherwise it could hurt you)
@@lucifernazaedi Yes but nowadays they are made to make you look super skinny, rather than giving support for the dress. And since everyone always needs a woman to be skinny in order for her to be pretty, corsets are pretty much an oppression on women nowadays because of their new purpose.
@@Halo-rg6dr Every woman wants a tall man. You can't change height but you can change weight so I find it stupid anyone makes that argument. Plus, corsets do not make you *super skinny* but rather put more definition on your curves. Nonetheless, corsets can't be oppression if it is out of the woman's will to wear them. I know women who wear them and they wear them because they like them.. not to impress anyone. And corsets are also used for better posture and for medical purposes.
As a busty girl looking into wearing a corset for my back pain I find the amount of misinformation appalling. Also, 90% of the corsets if seen are basically meant for waist training which is NOT the point of a corset
But seriously, what's the PROBLEM with waist training? I'm not suggesting extremes here, but having a slim waist is kind of necessary to be healthy - I don't mean it's unhealthy to be overall stocky or plump naturally, but if your waist is out of proportion and as big as your hips or bust, that's kind of a giveaway of being overweight, which is unhealthy. If a corset helps to ensure you don't let yourself get overweight, that's a good thing! And that's even without the much more important virtue of support.
@@cmm5542 A slim waist has nothing to do with being healthy, nor does it have anything to do with one's weight (plenty of even skinny girls have waistlines that aren't substantially smaller than their hips, because people have different proportions and body shapes, not influenced by their body fat. It's _anatomy),_ nor does a corset do anything to "ensure you don't let yourself get overweight." I've worn corsets, and trust me when I say that there's nothing about them that restricts you from eating normally, or even excessively. The only thing that was ever damn uncomfortable to do in a corset was _sneeze._
@@Mokiefraggle Sorry I wasn't clear. I was trying to indicate that because of different body types, just as you said, wearing a corset or having a slim waist naturally or any other health/beauty choices or even natural build can't be seen as signs of oppression. For all we know, a girl with a slim waist who also wears a corset would have a slim waist naturally, and someone without a slim waist may still choose to wear a corset, not to force slimness, but for other valid reasons. I was just pointing out that if a girl DOES have a slim waist or chooses to dress in a way that creates the appearance of a slim waist because she WANTS to, she shouldn't be criticized for upholding 'impossible beauty standards.' Everyone has a right to make their own choices regarding their appearance, regardless of societal expectations. It can be a very big boost to one's self esteem to stand out, and an equal but different boost to meet expectations: it's all about how YOU perceive yourself and the reasons you make your choices.
god i can’t even imagine how gorgeous the dress reveal would have been of the dress was giant, poofy, gold, AND HISTORICALLY ACCURATE! it would have been so much better
My other issue with Belle’s yellow dress that my friend Molly and I noticed in the theater is you can clearly see the zipper in the back ballooning outward. As cosplayers and Molly being really smart with knowing how to sew, we both agreed that it’s easy to hide a zipper. They didn’t do a good job with hiding it.
Belle's dress pissed me off so much in the film considering the fashion is clearly set during the ROCOCO FASHION ERA. Her dress should have been packed with lush ambers, dusted golds, some roses (red and gold?), bows, and frills! 🤦♀️ Also THANK YOU for mentioning how the side characters had fancier dresses but apparently Belle had to have a simple dress for....reasons???

@@ingloriousMachina a corset could help hold A LOT of puff volume. It would definitely save the dress. Otherwise, if remaining non corseted, it’s unsalvageable unless changing half the design haha
its actually the men who started the whole "corsets are oppresive" thing. women owned most of the corset businesses which men to fight their competition started calling it oppressive.
And the dctors at that time (who were also men) that said that wearing corsets would "rearrange your organs" or "break your ribs" THEN male journalists made articles condemning the vanity of women and how they would sacrifice their health and fertility for the sake of fashion🙄 (and also how the few men who wore corsets were ridiculed and had to hide the fact they wore it, even if it was for medical reasons)
I hate the “corsets don’t let you breathe,” trope. A correctly fitting corset doesn’t need to hurt! I’m petite and can only have a seven inch long corset (in the front, the sides two inches shorter) because I have a cartoonishly short torso. Of COURSE it hurt until I figured that out! But the correct size and fit doesn’t have to hurt or stifle breathing at all. Most people didn’t tight lace, so it wasn’t uncomfortable. We’re pushing our modern priorities onto another era, as if their objective would of course to be as thin as possible, which wasn’t the case in various times and places. I used to have to wear a back brace. But it was two inches thick and made me embarrassed if I had to wear it in public. It was also incredibly hot, and as I’m in the South, that was a problem. But a mesh corset can be stealthed and is breathable. I’m in less pain with a corset on than otherwise, as it gives some added support that my bra needs, relieving my back pain. They’re so useful even now, but people associate them with discomfort or pain and automatically rule them out. Instead of a $300-$500 bulky back brace, I can spend $75 on a steel boned corset and have this pain relieving device stealthed under my clothes, so no one knows I’m even having to dodge pain. I get why Emma wouldn’t be a fan of what the caricature of the corset stands for, but that isn’t its true history, so it made the movie worse for... absolutely no reason. Stand up for your principles, sure. Just make sure they make sense. 🤷🏻♀️
Stardancer No, I used to be but I don’t even remember my username for sure, lol. You could DM me on Twitter, which I also don’t really use anymore, but at least it’s still downloaded on my phone, lol. I don’t mind answering some questions at all!
Miss Roma If you want to see if you like them for not a ton of money, Orchard Corset is a good starter brand. They also have new styles and designs here and there. I have about four corsets from them. If you’re in a hot environment, I’d recommend starting with the mesh one. They tend to ship quickly and have good service. Just be aware that if you are petite you might need a short corset, or a “waspie.” The ONLY time I’ve had a painful corset was when it was too long, and when I sat the end would dig into my legs and pelvis. Looked stunning, lol, but I couldn’t sit in it. Basically, if it hurts, that is only because it’s not the right size or length maybe. They have RUclips videos helping you understand the lingo and how to get a proper corset and how to maintain them, and how to break them in. Basically, wear them for short amounts of time at first. Over time they kind of mold to you. It’s really cool. Also, make sure that when you’ve tightened the corset, that the edges in the back are parallel. Sometimes in movies you see where a corset laces and that area looks like a triangle or an hourglass. Those corsets don’t fit right, and are more likely to be uncomfortable, and over time that corset would be damaged more quickly because more pressure is put on some areas than others. You know a corset fits right when you got up to a few inches of space between the edges of the corset and when those edges are straight up and down like railroad tracks. Let me know if you have any other questions. Corsets aren’t the end all be all and in some situations they can’t be stealthed, or for some kinds of pain back braces are better. But generally, corsets are pretty great and get a bad wrap. It’s just a matter of understanding how they work. 🤷🏻♀️ I hope you find something you really like. 😊
Amara Jordan really! Corsets were rally tight laced. Also being plump back then was more desirable because it meant your father could feed you and you had a good dowry.
The animated dress is like honeycomb, and the live action one is like cheep shredded cheese. Don't know how I came to that conclusion, but that's what I believe.

I agree. This coming from a feminist, I always dress for the occasion. When I go to the supermarket, I dress very casual, when I go out to dinner, or visiting for holidays, I dress up. And I don’t think that’s antithetical to feminism 🤷🏼
In an interview, Emma has admitted that she said no to Cinderella over concerns of how the character stood up as a “role model”. “I didn’t know they were going to make Beauty And The Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella,” she told Total Film. “But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did." Thank goodness she turned down Cinderella.
I read that interview, and I remember how I was annoyed with it. Agree that it was a blessing that Emma turned down Cinderella 2015. Cinderella 2015 was the best Disney movie adaptation to me, hands down. Emma doesn't understand Cinderella, thus she doesn't deserve that role. Cinderella might not be a warrior princess, and ppl might see her passiveness as being weak, but she showed emotions and strengths in both the animation and live action versions. There is an essay concerning how ppl blaming Cinderella for not fighting back and not running away as blaming the victim. In those days, for Cinderella, having a roof over your head would be more important than winning the argument against her stepmother. At least in that house she was physically safe (I disagree of course with the abuse, I just want to point out that Cinderella has a reason to not physically fight back). And in the end, Cinderella's kindness and forgiveness are one of her most endearing traits. If those traits are not the traits of a role model, then what a sad thing the world we live in then... A side note: I see more and more people thinking that Cinderella 2015 is a better movie overall compared to BB2017, and I am glad they start to think so. It's not because I don't like Beauty and the Beast; I love the animation. I just can't relate with the BB live action version.
Emma really missed what Cinderella was about anyway. To still keep a kind heart when you are abused is not easy, and is severely looked down upon by people like Emma who grew up so privileged. The whole "just save yourself" attitude is toxic when you think it can be applied to everybody. and even Belle wasn't a "I'll just save myself" kind of girl, but that's the kind of character Emma wanted to push.
Lots of self proclaimed feminists insult Cinderella, forgetting the tiny detail that Cindy never looked for a man, she just wanted to go to a party. They put down the soft girls, as if that makes them empowering.
The thing about abusive family is that you *have* to be passive as to not get into trouble. You can't stand up for yourself and not expect there to be dire, dire consequences. In both movies the stepmother and sisters showed that they were capable of putting their hands on cinderella. Could you imagine if Cinderella yelled at them or slapped one of them!? She'd be locked up in the barn bruised and battered. Also, abuse does not make kind people. The fact that Cinderella, was verbally, physically and emotionally abused throughout most of her life up until age 19, and came out of it still kind and sweet shows more emotional and mental strength than any disney princess (or character) made during Walts' lifetime. I was abused by my step family. I'm now 19 and out of it. It did not make me a kind person admittedly and gave me a lot of my own anger problems. Cinderella broke the cycle, the strongest, most incredible thing an abuse victim can do
You guys look so goofy rn 😭 thanking god an actor didn’t play a character there’s ALREADY a movie for. Cinderella is kind of dead tbh because she has no self esteem or back bone when it comes to ppl hurting her , but she stood up for a DEER the prince was hunting 💀 vegan Cinderella ? I have no idea what that was abt , but she takes all the abuse from the step family with a smile
As a medieval-style seamstress, I had to roll my eyes at the feminist corset statement. Corsets are one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing I've ever worn. Like as a big-chested girl, corsets help alleviate so much pain because they support the entire torso and not just the chest. They are a historical item of clothing that allowed women to function in life. But she wouldn't know any of that because no one does any real research on anything anymore.
As an expert in this field, I'm very glad to see how many people in the comments here actually have done research. What dismays me is that Emma, with her massive platform, doesn't bother to do a damned google search before popping off at the mouth about how they were torture devices.
She would never understand because - as my impression of her goes she would only know about herself. Most certainly not about women with a different body type not to say a hard physical working lifestyle.
I'm a feminist and I always get pissed at what she said about corsets, she said something along the lines of "gender stereotypes"....like, what? Corsets can be worn by anyone, yes, but they are specifically made for people with busts, so I didn't understand her statement, it's like saying I hate bras because I hate gender stereotypes
Some years ago, I directed a production of "Beauty and the Beast" at my school, and our Belle wore a sumptuous gold lace 18th-century frock that I bought from a professional theatre company costume sale. The little girls in the audience were gasping with delight when she appeared at the top of the staircase! Anyone who is directing this play: you can't have Belle wear any other color than golden yellow--those little girls have expectations!
Yeah lmao, my high school production of Beauty and the Beast had an honest to god prettier dress than this. It was handmade by a mom of one of the cast and it was gorgeous.
So true. I've never played Belle - one of my life's dreams - but I played Princess Ida in my Gibert and Sullivan Society's production and we didn't have much money for costumes. The girls at Ida's school were dressed as pastel nuns! Well, I told my director that I had to wear a princess dress at some point or we would break the hearts of every little girl who came to the show because it had 'princess' in the title! So one of the ladies who did costume did over one of my mom's evening dresses to look more medieval, and I wore it for the lunchtime scene as sort of 'non-uniform' downtime. Well, judging from the response after the show, I made several young girls very happy! You've got to have the princess dress: it's a law. 😁
Luna Grace I had no idea about the dress supposed to be made or stars. That’s cool and I do like the silver dress more than the blue one. Is this also why they decided to have Aurora’s dress mostly be pink and not blue?
@@Emilykrabappel yea they made auroras dress be pink so as to not have two princesses in blue dresses. At the time sleeping beauty was released, there were only 2 other princesses: Snow White and Cinderella (Correct me if I'm wrong). Disney didnt want 2/3 of their princesses wearing the same color dress since it would be a lot easier to market 3 different color dresses to kids that want princess dolls. Sorry if that was ramble
Luna Grace I had no idea Cinderella’s dress was supposed to be made of stars. That’s such a beautiful nod back to her roots. I personally loved the live action dress but the original animated dress will always have a special place in my heart
Yay, me too. I love shimmering silver color, reminds me of stars ✨ or the moon. Which is fitting since their romance song has an outdoor sequence at night in the animated version (I haven’t seen live action Cinderella). So pretty.
I'll always prefer the animated version, even in the Broadway adaptation Belle's infamous yellow dress is jaw-dropping. Emma Watson was all wrong for the role of Belle.
Everyone talks about how underwhelming the dress is when they think about this movie, but all I can think about is how they took away Beast's monstrous snout and made him look like Mr. Tumnus on steroids instead
Mr. Tumnus on steroids. That's one I've never heard before. Beast looks too human. My high school did better. And taht was just make-up and a wig. Plus hairy gloves for the claws. I wasn't in it, and its been a while so I could be remembering wrong.
And there are a crap ton of yellow dresses in the background of the ballroom scene that would have looked stunning on Belle! All of the dresses in that movie, although maybe not entirely historically accurate, they still make an effort to resemble the 1840s and 50s, and on top of that, they're absolutely gorgeous! The thing is, a bunch of the dresses in the Live-Action BATB are accurate to the 1760s-80s as well, and they look wonderful! So it baffles me how they put Belle in such a terrible 'gown'!
It's like they tried not to be sexist but then ended up being sexist, and the dress looks like what you'd buy your 8 year old daughter for halloween in Walmart.
The costume designer said when the movie came out, that because Emma Watson refused to wear a corset, she couldn't support the weight of the original costume, and the costume had to be drastically redesigned to make it more wearable without a corset, and the chiffon dress was the best she could come up with to still make it flowy. Basically, Emma Watson's selfishness ruined the film for all of us.
I agree. Belle isn’t my favorite princess but the actress is here to play Belle, not Emma Watson and express her personal beliefs. Belle’s golden ballgown is just so beautiful and personally one of the most beautiful gowns of the Disney princesses, and that’s what made the scene one of the most iconic scenes Disney ever created! Because its GOLD, it shimmers and makes her shine like a diamond. This dress was so disappointing, not only from it doesn’t even look like the dress but it looks like a diy project gone wrong. My mom made me a beautiful turquoise dress with rhinestones and gathers that looked waay better than the actual dress. This could’ve made Disney live actions worth it if Emma wouldn’t have been so stubborn. Disney should’ve fired her and hired a new actress saying she can express her beliefs somewhere else.

I HATED her dress it just ruined the magical feel of the movie. yea maybe she stood out but not in a good way. She was like a sore thumb wearing a cheap prom dress from amazon
I don't understand why they always give Emma Watson so much freedom over her costumes. This dress was an absolute disaster in every way. Micarah Tewers made a video on how the costumes of little women didn't deserve an oscar, and she also explains how terrible the dress of Belle is, and created her own vision of what the dress should have been (she is amazing at making great costumes). I understand Emma Watson's intention concerning corsets, but she obviously doesn't master her topic enough to be given so much freedom over her costume...
i was gonna comment about micarah until i found yours!! love her, she also said this era in france would have been about structure and artifice (if i remember correctly) and emma's dress is too flowy and ethereal. it was such a waste edit: the word she used was whimsical and not ethereal, I misquoted her
She’s also being paid.... a TON of money.. throw ur political agenda elsewhere and at least do ur historical research before assuming you know anything about the era. That is why the job should be left to the designers not the ACTors.. what’s your job again?? Oh that’s right ACTING.
The gloves with Belle's dress were a symbol of her being married into royalty. They should have let it be instead of not making them a part it her dress. They did the same with Cinderella's dress as well! I know gloves are no longer considered that popular but they add up to that princess vibe! ❤️
corsets are not oppressive. they were historically kind of like bras and were meant to help with support. unfortunately people misused the purpose of the corset and spread things like how it’s suffocating and whatever. misinterpretation. that’s the issue
Emma refused it as a feminist thing because nowadays corsets are seen as and remembered to enforce beauty standards. And who watches Disney movies? Kids (all ages but the brunt of the audience is little girls) She didn't want to wear what has become a symbol of female oppression just to look pretty in a dress.
Corsets CAN be oppressive a lot of women actually were pressured to wear corsets to be Skinner then a lot of women got hurt but I agree corsets are not the problem it's Peoples obsession with girls being super tiny Just to be clear I don't think corsets are inherently bad or evil they just need to be worn correctly but there's so much propaganda surrounding corsets and they're actually use And I really don't like how everybody's hating on Emma Watson for making a simple mistake we all probably would have made too just because the dress wasn't pretty enough for you guys
We had a lesson on history of clothing in school, and corsets were very suffocating and uncomfortable. But women had to wear them because they were the equivalent of bras and they were supposed to look as skinny as possible. Nevertheless, considering that it is historically accurate, she maybe should have worn one. She's already skinny so its not that big of a deal. But I understand why she disagreed.
@@snowflakes7344 not entirely true. One thing I’d like to mention is that the entire outfit that has a corset is about illusion. Big skirts make the waist appear smaller. Most women then did not tightlace as most women were working women. Tightlacing would cause issues but again it was rare & frowned upon. The eyelets (the holes in which the lacing goes through) we’re hand sewn & actually could not withstand the pressure of tightlacing anyway. Another thing is old timey photoshop. They retouched a bunch of photos of women (& men. Just about everyone) with way too small waists & perfect skin & weirdly no collarbones. I could go on but I’ll end it here.
@@alloriavarner8304 About what you're saying, I believe it was Karolina Zebrowska who made a video where she "reviewed" a bunch of old photographs (like over century old) and how they've been retouched. To maybe add to what you've written. The reason many actors who wore videos on set complain about it, besides the fact that media love drama etc, is that they usually aren't made to measure by professionals, seasoned etc. They don't use any shift or chemise underneath it. They probably don't lace it down gradually and do tight lace it. So no wonder they dislike the experience. Corsets are expensive to make, goddamit, why would you want to have it drink all the sweat and other body oils from your skin? Yes, corsets were THE breast and back support and there're modern women, including those with rather bigger "assets", who say that wearing corsets helped relieve back plains, because the weight doesn't rest solely on your shoulders and a little strap around your rib cage but gets distributed around the whole corset surface. Tight lacing was a thing but it was a thing for rich and vain girls, just like not everyone does plastic surgeries for "looking prettier" reasons (plastic surgery is still a surgery and a health risk). You would lace it just enough so it sits next to the body, but why on Earth would you tight lace it to a point where you can't move and basically faint while working in a field or a factory? Also love to hate how corset portrayal in movies is basically that of male caricaturists of past centuries, ridiculing those rich vain tight lacing women, except we take it seriously because that's the only thing we know. Istg, don't let me anywhere near movie making or there will be serious money and time invested into making corsets for the cast, to their body measurements, they will be historically accurate, require chemises underneath and will actually be pleasant to wear, once you've gotten used to it (personally my biggest beef with corsets is that they take more time to put them on than a bra, been there, done that).
I would hope so, considering that Belle's entire wardrobe fell flat due to her imposing HER vision on the costume designs instead of leaving it to the professional costume designer. Poor woman had to find so many tactful ways of saying "please, don't blame me for this or hold it against me when considering future jobs." Edit: Not to mention, she fell into the trap so many movies do when trying to make their historical heroine seem modern and relatable. That is, thinking of the dress as a costume instead of clothing. PoTC had the same problem. It's when the heroine will walk around in her underwear, no problem. Elizabeth flinging off the jacket her father gave her to cover her shift on the pier, or Belle stripping off her dress entirely to rush to the castle to join the fight. The historical version of standing in front of everyone in your bra and panties. And Belle running around town with her dress tucked into her drawers. Not only were those not a thing at the time, when they did turn up they were viewed as being for loose women. So, Emma had Belle going all over town doing the equivalent of the drunk girl at the club who left the bathroom with her dress tucked into her panties.
Yeah, I feel like she's probably realized her own interpretation as incorrect and has gone and done research of her own. She doesn't seem like the kind of person to not be introspective ykno?
@@kannale7845probably due to the backlash she got from not wearing a corset in BATB. I wouldn’t be surprised if she did some more research after so many fashion historians called her out
How is it a "feminist statement" to refuse to honor the real life clothing choices of our fore-mères? Is it feminist to say to centuries of women, most of whom made their own intimate apparel, that they were stupid? Or that their method of supporting their breasts and distributing the weight of their skirts was oppressive?
Good point. Some women still wear a modern version of a corset to fashion or for practical support. I thought being a feminist was about choice? Belle could read, work the land and look after her elderly father, I highly doubt Belle was forced into a corset. Emma was given too much leeway by the director. The director of "Little women" obviously didn't because she wore a corset in "Little women".
@DriftFromReality - Even then, tight lacing was seen as a very vain thing to do. Some did it occasionally, but people more often than not talked badly behind their backs for doing so. It was the 18th - 19th century version of plastic surgery.
@ALLEGRA F But she can't sing! She's like the female equivalent of when they hired Gerald Butler to play Phantom. And even he did a better jobb because he actually showed emotions! Emma kept the same expression throughout the whole film. Seriously, watch a side by side comparison of the animated and live action film. The best scenes to compare are the Be Our Guest and the wolf scenes. Who has more emotion? The one that was made with paper and pencil!
@@Notsomethingtoknow Did you not read the numerous articles about the making of the film, because that's what they're talking about. Emma Watson stepped out if her boundaries as an actress and made so many decisions that wasn't her job to make. That's not a good thing. Films are a team effort and everyone was hired to do their jobs because they have the skills for them. Emma didn't study costume design, screen writing, or cinematography, so she isn't qualified to make such decisions but she did for this film because she wanted to, most likely threatening the production team that she'll leave if they don't do as she says.
The dress in a different movie wouldve been a “jawdropping” piece. But in beauty and the beast its just out of place and awkward. I remember reading that directors and costume designers wanted the dress to seem more “flowy” so it look pretty when she danced but it barely held much shape when she turned except for the one moment she grabs the dress and lifts it. The reason belles dress was so big and out of her character was just because of that. IT WAS MEANT TO BE OUT OF HER CHARACTER. Her transformation into this perfect looking queen type was to show her in a new style, Belle as royalty and how she fits in with it. Its obviously my own thoughts and theory but personally its what makes sense to the drastic change of style in the movie. The big change is what makes the dress so memorable. They lost that in the live actiin
I love how Belle as so giddy and preened and you could tell she was just so excited! And then there was Emma. She stood there. Like she couldn't care less. Like she was bored.
that dress wasnt even specially designed for her personality or to ride horses,it came from a royal wardrobe. it was supposed to be extravagant and luxury, thats why it was gold.
I think it's not just the dress that sticks out in a bad way, it's her whole appearance. Her hair and makeup are too modern; like I think even her eyebrows are noticeably modern in their shaping if that makes any sense. Her hairstyle just says 'Hermione but straighter' (the texture that is). When I think of women in good period pieces set pre-20th century, they almost always have some degree of curl or wave to their hair because curls/waves are genetically more common, I read somewhere. And her posture... eesh.
Idk why, but it made me think of Keira Knightly and how she is professional to let the crew do their work with no complaints. And she ended up looking stunning because of it.
Now I feel a slight bit more special for having naturally almost bone straight hair, like I don't even need a straightener. XD And I'm sorry to say this, but I also think Emma did wrong for refusing to wear a corset she was originally provided. You are an actor, your job is to bring the character you're acting to life. It's not about some feminist statement told through the movie, but telling the actual story as it is. If the director makes poor choices along the way that's on them, but don't you make the production any more difficult, because you know what you signed up for when you read the script and accepted the role. Please.
Last I checked, wasn't the style back then over the top wigs and curly/wavy hair was all the rage. Its odd, because even in the cartoon Belle has wavy hair... I dont understand why they wanted to make it straight.
I feel like they created this vibe of “Belle isn’t like OTHER girls, she’s a feminist and she actually reads books and is SMART so she doesn’t wear fancy ballgowns and she never wears makeup and barely does her hair!” which is why literally EVERYONE is dressed nicer than her, even in the only scene that she has a fancy ballroom moment. And that vibe is cool, Belle isn’t focused on appearance which is part of her charm, but I think clinging to that idea just made the most iconic scene seem lackluster. Also I can’t stand the idea that a smart feminist woman inherently doesn’t care about fancy clothes, hair, and makeup. Like why couldn’t belle be smart, kind, focused on inner beauty, but ready to serve looks at the “ball”?
So she needs to look like the girl in a cheap prom dress to reveal her "inner beauty"? What the point of a ball scene and a grand reveille of this horrible dress if not to emphasize her beauty? If she is so feminist that rejects fancy dresses (the closing and jewelry, btw were the only capital women were allowed to have those days and she just... reject it??) why they made a whole scene where she is flaunts in this "beautiful" (no) dress instead of just give her something simple to wear? This scene was IMPLIED as the moment of her heyday, but through the efforts of Emma Watson and the team of costumers, they turned this magical moment into a laughing stock. If Belle does not care about her appearance that much, why did she put on a "beautiful" dress, and did not stay in the clothes she wore in the village? This is simply the poor work of costumers and the inept use of the word "feminism" as an excuse for their own unprofessionalism.
Just because she's beautiful on the inside doesn't mean she shouldn't want to be beautiful on the outside. It isn't vain or shallow to want to look your absolute best for a special dance.
I think that you are right. They gave her clothes that made her different, not fitting to those time in purpose. Simple and classy that just support her beauty, without a need of creating it. (Tho I didn't like the yellow dress :c)
But in the original that is the only time she wears a gown like that. Why would it be against her "believes" to wear something awesome for once? I personally think they also did it because they wanted to make it look a little more modernised. Which failed.
i’m probably going to get dragged for this but i think their biggest mistake when making this movie was letting Emma Watson play the role of Belle. that’s not on her, she was given the part and worked with it, but there’s other actresses who i think would’ve captured Belle’s essence better.
I’m glad I’m not the only thinking she shouldn’t have got the role. A lot of people hyped it up just because she “looks like Belle” ( I don’t really see it ) and I did not have high expectations when I found out she actually got the role.
She could have turned down the role (she was offered the lead in LaLa Land as well, and turned that down instead), or have let those who knew better take the lead in design.
Kyra McGee Exactly! The character radiates this warm energy and I could tell just by the trailer that she wasn’t going to portray that. Not to mention she can’t even SING?! Like what?? That was the best part of the character I-
Sincerely, Noëlle That’s true, I just question why Disney would ask Emma in the first place, considering most of the movie’s success came from its soundtrack. But you’re right, she ultimately could’ve turned it down. I feel like this would’ve been the perfect movie to cast a fresh face that felt really connected to the role.
I just saw a Broadway production Beauty and the Beast, and they did such a beautiful gold dress covered in sparkles. The audience literally gasped and applauded when Belle entered in that dress.
Well... they ARE! If you’re wearing the wrong size. Which is 70-85% of women. Upsettingly. If offered a fitting... ACCEPT IT!! It is one if the healthiest things you can do! It’s how I learned my ribcage is significantly wider at the top. 36” to 32” where the main band of a bra sits. That is a huge change!... no wonder my shirts rarely fit right
RUclips recommended this to me and I’m just a random dude that mostly watches video game related videos. That being said, I AGREE WITH THIS VIDEO. Belle’s live action dress seemed a bit underwhelming compared to the animated take on it.
As someone who does not like the Rococo style, I was actually looking forward to see how they'd change Belle's dress. I was expecting something like Cinderella's dress; modern fabric and enhanced color that has the silhouette of the dresses of that period, but no we got that yellow dress. I like yellow but I was expecting more than that. Also, that gold floral prints added later? it was hardly recognizable and didn't add anymore wow factor. it was meh.
msk i think because people don’t like the rococo era and don’t view it as attractive anymore, they thought that it would be fine for the side characters to have the historically accurate costumes that people would have seen as goofy, but if the main character did there would be backlash because people wouldn’t have liked the style of dress that she wore thus lowering the marketability of the movie as a whole
The costume aesthetic for Cinderella was 1950's combined with a few other eras. So the modernity in her dress made sense. In BatB, aside from Belle, the costuming is so incredibly exact to a few certain years that Emma's dresses are especially awful.
An actor’s job is to embody the character’s life and time period. Belle would have worn some sort of corset and nothing in Emma’s portrayal suggested otherwise.
Because she didn’t want people to attack her for her opinion. Honestly I never cared or really paid attention to what the dress looked like in the live action. But now looking back man it was an ugly dress💀😭😂
I know it’s not a Disney Princess movie, but the Renaissance retelling of Cinderella, Ever After, had the PRETTIEST costumes. The “Cinderella” dress, the white butterfly gown, is one of my favorite movie costumes of all time.
Agreed! The Ever After costumes were amazing, as was that movie. The way I see it, Disney had two choices before them: a) make as exact copies of the cartoons as possible, maybe allowing a couple of things the animation wasn't able to accomplish (like a gold dress in a more historically accurate style), or b) go for something completely different and make something like Ever After. What we got was neither.
Ever after is such a beautiful movie, also Drew Barrymore’s Danielle / Cinderella is such a great and loveable character. And the costumes are simply amazing.
I hate the fact that they made Emma portray herself and not Belle. I love Emma, and I don't have anything against her but seriously Belle is my favourite princess and I looked up to her since I was a little girl to the point that I believe that she is the best princess among others (although that did change when I grew older but still, she's my favourite). I've waited for this movie and thought it will be magical, but when I saw it,all I wanted to do was turn it off and put the original one instead. Belle in the original, which is a cartoon, definitely showed more charisma, and character than Emma, which is already saying something.
Fun fact. Emma Watson was born in Paris, France. As a French, The role of Belle really suits her. The problem with the movie. It's how it filmed. The Beast is obviously CGI. The Iconic Yellow Dress from the Movie I really didn't mind it. A Real dress from the 17th is way more heavy and uncomfortable You guys are so picky.
It didn't really even feel like she was playing a character, it was just like filming Emma Watson around on the set. To me Belle isn't in the movie at all, it's just Emma and the Beast
@Someone 333 On paper she was perfect, but when it comes to acting - we saw Emma Watson and not Belle. With full sympathy to Emma she is not very versatile actress...
@Madame Bookworm I think they are just angry that people don’t have the same opinion as them. Also, you put that so well. People do still like to dress in historical clothing and they don’t complain, if corsets hurt then people wouldn’t still wear them.
Let's just be real, Emma shouldn't have had the role as Belle from the beginning I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but a girl can't sing and the wardrobe for Belle shouldn't have been in her hands. She was the iceberg who sunk the ship, and unfortunately she snagged the door
As much as I love Emma Watson, she just wasn't the best choice for Belle, who was subtle, patient, calm and easy-going and that's what makes her so admirale and lovable. The way Emma plays Belle is the polar opposite, and it kind of feels like I'm watching a calmer Hermione. Personality heavily affects the tone of the story. In the end it doesn't feel as memorable and strong as the original. Her dress certainly didn't help the situation. Very underwhelming.
i think maybe what they were trying to go for was that belle had these walls up because of how the town treated her and what happened with her mother, and the beast helped her let those walls down and in turn they both learned a life lesson. but the execution of it was done really terribly which i think is probably the issue. it might not be emma’s acting in the movie that’s the problem, it’s probably the writing and/or directing
She also can’t sing, so picking her for a movie where her character sings some of the most memorable songs is not a good idea because it just ends up being a bunch of auto tune
I hated that dress. With a fiery passion. Even if she didn’t want a corset they could have had a more sophisticated look on her. She looked like a kid still you know?
I've seen more accurate and prettier versions of Belle's dress at Comic-con. Emma wasn't Belle at all for me, the rest of the movie and the characters were fabulous... Just not Belle. The actor felt wrong, the dress was wrong, the dance was lacking and the emotion felt hollow. It was such a shame.
I was actually rather disappointed with Belle’s gown in the live action version of Beauty and the Beast. I understand cartoon dresses can defy the laws of science and whatnot; however, compared to Belle’s dress, the skirt of Emma’s dress appeared forlorn and seemed to hang limply with nothing to support its shape. Additionally, the fact that a corset or stays were not worn beneath the gown’s bodice marred the effect, and did not allow for as much of a whimsical, magical Disney appearance. I had expected something elegant and extravagant, something that would appear expensive and almost unrealistic, as that, I feel, is what I have been trained to expect based upon the other creations that through the art of sketching have been presented to me in the animated versions of these Disney films. Moreover, I would have liked to see more extravagant fabrics used in her dress and heavier embroidery to give it that air of wealth. Overall, the dress was not good, but it was not terrible. In my humble opinion, that is.
i think not wearing a corset is a dumb "feminist statement" ive researched and watched tons of people talk about the topic. corsets were bras. we didnt have bras until very recent time. it wasnt a torture device only media makes it look that way. and corsets arent painful if you wear them correctly
and even if corsets were harmful, emma wouldn't be betraying feminism by wearing one since its only purpose would be to make the film more historically accurate!
@@rita6276 she wanted it to look more real can we for jst a second keep the history nd facts aside nd think what would be perfect for a film for the generation of this decade. Corsets would have given a very thin waist which are not at all real. I agree that dress looked like curtains nd should have given more details bt i agree with emma watson in not wearing corset.
@@bhumisoni1515 A corset would only give a very small waist if it were tight-laced, which most historical corsets were not. We have existing historical garments with waist sizes up to 40 inches and more. Corsets were primarily worn as supportive or "foundation" garments. The illusion of a very small waist was mostly created by hoops, petticoats, and copious amounts of padding in the right places. By making the bust and hips appear wider, the waist seems smaller in comparison.
@Bhumi Soni she wasn’t tiny at the waist. She was actually a very healthy size and even though I’m a guy, I’m surprised I know more about corsets than you apparently do. If you are going to complain about corsets making girls feel like they need to be skinny then you should tell that to all the celebrities that those girls look at and look up to. Corsets weren’t even designed to make you look skinny. They were mainly used to hold up a dress and give support/posture. Even men wore corsets at one point in time. Plus, corsets are also used for medical purposes especially if you have a back injury. The only people who cared about how they looked were the wealthy bunch. Plus, to make themselves look skinnier, they would use other things. I’ve seen a lot of women with corsets on and they don’t make the women look skinner.
Belle suits a more structured dress (like in the 1991 film) as it is reflective of her maturity and intelligence, perhaps even more so than the other princesses whose charms lie in their whimsical and arguably naive nature. Perhaps it was taking away the ability to use away a corset as you mentioned... but in doing this the dress became no longer reflective of the time period or of Belle as a character. Loved this 💓
I completely agree :) I always felt as if her dressing up in this fancy, beautiful golden dress was sort of letting herself be a bit extravagant, not always modest, to enjoy herself a bit as if she were a princess from the novels she loves to read.
Niamh Lauren I completely agree! Plus I think the 1991 dress showed that Belle did not need to compromise her femininity nor her independence as a strong willed woman. In fact it showed that there is power that lies within allowing yourself to be truly beautiful, both on the inside and the outside.
Nesseire I was just thinking that. They could have gotten away with no corsete on that too. It was scandalous and daring, and I can picture Belle being a woman who would be forwar thinking enough to hop on that. Also it does have that elegant in it’s simplisity thing they were going for. Marie Antoinette loved that «simple life» thing. It could have been made super floofy as well.
Can we also talk about in the opening sequence, where we meet Belle, many of the background characters are wearing blue. Something that was supposed to only be wore by Belle to help her stand out as strange and different to the town citizens. But in the live action she blends in with the rest of them, making her seem part of the town.
I remember watching the film and feeling underwhelmed when I saw Belle’s dress. I don’t know a lot about fashion history, but since Belle is the protagonist and that it’s a Disney film, I expected a more elegant and magical dress. Also, I don’t want to offend anyone, but when Emma said she doesn’t want to wear a corset because of feminism, I just rolled my eyes. I understand it’s her choice but not everything is about feminism and corsets were prevalent during that time.
@@winterblossom9546 I get what you mean but i do see a difference like for belle who doesnt care so much about apearance, making a gown that has structure but without the need of a corset under it seems fine to me also considering it's a fantasy wolrd. As for little women she plays Meg who cares a lot about fashion and being accepted in society so not wearing a corset would have went against the character (altough the clothes were pretty innacurate in that but thats another subject)
Claudelle Myrand - But it was Wardrobe who dressed Belle. Even if Wardrobe took Belle’s preferences into consideration, she wouldn’t have made it *_SO SUPER_* plain and rather ugly (considering it’s supposed to be a 18/19th-century ballgown.) Even simple dresses back in those days weren’t so plain. Even 21st century prom dresses are prettier than Live!Belle’s dress. And Wardrobe would’ve added flair to an otherwise plain dress, but there’s nothing.
@@winterblossom9546 i was only talking about the corset/no corset issue. I completely agree that the dress could have been much prettier and much more historically accurate. I honestly don't understand what happened in the clothing departement to end up with such a dress ...
Claudelle Myrand /// The no-corset rule played a big part in it, though. Like the corset, Emma had creative input and control over her wardrobe. It wasn’t just a matter of wearing no corset and being active-Emma had every dress made to be active-friendly, including the yellow ballroom dress. But ballgowns aren’t meant to be activewear. Yet, being free of the corset wasn’t enough for Emma.
@@rainywoex5035 you know because Belle likes to read and focus on the inner beauty instead of the physical which are things that make her differents Like literally the first song of the movie is about how she is weird/ different to everybkdy
I find it ironic that feminist actresses refuse to wear corsets as a ‘statement’. The reason people think these entirely inaccurate myths about corsets is because of misogyny. Men felt threatened by a widely female-run industry- corset making. So they invited rumours and exaggerated stories about them so that the industry would fail. Saying it’s a feminist statement to not wear a corset is a tad ignorant and perhaps these people should do some research on them before forming a full opinion.
@@thetillerwiller4696 Pretry sure if you want people to believe that corsets were torso support and not intended to warp the body into having a tiny waist, you should not be talking about indulging in unhealthy food and being molded by your corset to still look attractive. Your claim defies the other argument.
The corset statement she made was just ridiculous, it a movie about a princess...in an era were a corset had a real purpose as a garment, wasn't for looks or men and it definitely didn't mean that you were inferior to men, nor does it mean that now 😔.
You’re absolutely correct. Also, men back then wore their own version of corsets too, but we never hear people talking about how “oppressive” and “sexist” those were, do we!
also, a corset would've 100% made her performance SO MUCH BETTER. playing a princess has so much to do with your posture and the lightness of your movements to give it that truly magical factor, and a corset can really really help an actress get used to that. even if the purpose was to portray belle as a more "active" princess they still needed that.
It wasn’t only the dress throughout this whole movie I felt like I was watching Hermione in Belle’s clothes. I didn’t see any of Belle’s qualities in Emma Watson which is a shame because the actors are really supposed to bring the characters to life.
As a feminist I see no problem in wearing a corset, be it in real life or for a movie. This "feminist statement" is the stupidest thing I have ever heard
@@thetillerwiller4696 Tons of things were created by men. Corsets were the earliest version of a bra. Many corsets if worn properly are comfortable. The whole feminist statement doesn't fly for this. This is movie is set in a different time period & actors & actresses should wear proper clothes accordingly.
@@Anna-zp1ok I've worn corsets regularly for half my life (I have back issues and it helps) and it irks me when actresses complain about corsets being uncomfortable because I guarentee that they (for the most part) aren't seasoning them so of course it's not going to be comfy if you haven't taken the time to mold it to your body. Not to mention the whole corset is against women myth came from me that were threatened by the dominantly woman ran clothing industry.
So I actually met someone that worked on this film and they were telling me some things that reminded me of your video. Let's just say you are right the designer had other plans but someone made a stink about her ideas and so she had to quickly change the costume.
And yet when she appears in 2019’s “Little Women” Emma is wearing a corset as Meg March. Thanks for the video, I was also disappointed in Belle’s dress, and the original blue/white dress was an eyesore with those patches. That lasagna comment someone made about the yellow dress was spot on! 😆
She was apparently not wearing a corset for several scenes as Meg March either. Which is worse, because Meg isn't unconventional, like Belle, she's very proper. I don't get why she even takes on period pieces with that attitude...
Apparently in "Little Women (2019) Saoirse Ronan was the only of the 4 girls who never wore a corset. It was a thematic choice since her character was the "feminist" among them. perhaps that's why Watson was more willing to wear one in that context? (that being said, poor girl needs to learn how to act, no one smirks when sincerely apologizing to their husband but whatever)
Clearly, Emma Watson in her attempts to be a “feminist “, influenced the design of her costumes. As a theatrical costume designer (for 32 years) I have NEVER had an actor influence my design decisions. Actors wear whatever. I design for them and I have always tried to be as historically accurate as time and budget allows. Thank you for this video. It really struck a nerve for me.
While I liked Emma in the movie, she probably should have been fired for not wearing it or they should have tried to build support into the costume so it fit the time period. Overall, I liked the movie but that scene is the most lackluster because she looks way too modern compared to everyone else in it.
Emma Watson really very much wanted to be in this film. And it seemed that Disney also very much wanted her to be in it. They just worked with and around her. Her singing isn't great, so they improved on it. And if she wanted to make a feminist statement, they just let her run with it, because if makes for even more positive selling points. It sort of fits with the character she is portraying, even though the original didn't feel the need to oversell on that. I think that if actors have reasonable doubts or requests during a film, they should be discussed and agreed to where and when possible without it taking away from the final product. I think in this case her "demands" went too far, even if meant with good intentions. It's too bad.
I work for tv in Europe and i’m so confused, actors here have zero say over what they wear, the thought of someone refusing to wear something would be an instant recast lol.
@afootineachworld What would you mean with inappropriate? It's pretty clearly presented what the "depiction" of the character is before applying for the part. You can make some demands in your contract like not showing certain parts of your body uncovered, but otherwise refusing to wear something (albeit health related issues aside) will probably end up in getting you fired. Taking a princess role but refusing to wear a corset because you're trying to make a statement (which doesn't even make any sense) is imo a dick move and it would never have been accepted where I work.
More like a prom dress. Believe me, I work with outdoor weddings, and even the more simple wedding dresses are more elegant than the gowns Belle wears.
I was just mad they blurred the library scene. They seriously couldn't rent an European castle's library for a day and put a shiny filter on the camera? No, they had to blur CGI it 😭
ALSO it MUST be noted that corsets were, in fact, a HIGHLY feminist statement during this era. It gave structural support for the working women to do their jobs, and it wasn’t incredibly cinched to give an hourglass look at all times. It was often very breathable, that women would even EXERCISE in corsets in order to maintain stability. These new “feminist” actresses are completely uneducated in historical fashion, as they are not expected to. However, throwing around blatantly uneducated points of “female oppression” is so cringey.
@Maria Giulia Rodriguez you have your timeline so confused. the late 1800s (not the mid 1700s which is when this film would've taken place) is when tight-lacing increased in popularity and became common practice. THAT'S when people actually tried to change their natural shape with a corset (like a modern day waist trainer) and it's what most people think ALL corsets are. unlike modern times where people tend to overexert themselves by attempting to tight-lace themselves into a corset quickly, women of the 1700s wore a corset/stays (NOT a tight one) from very early ages. it made wearing them natural (like a bra) and it was VERY rare for it to actually adjust organ placement. corsets in the 1700s were made with materials of the time and thus were much softer than modern corsets. in regard to the working class they didn't own multiple corsets, they'd have one that they would wear until it couldn't be used anymore, this made their personal corset soft and worn. corsets in the 1700s were literally used as back support (those dresses were HEAVY) and it wasnt until the victorian/edwardian period that the 18-inch waist was what people strived for. you can't lump one time period with another, especially when we're talking about historical accuracy. there is so much research about this i highly recommend checking it out.
YES! thank you! "She rides horses" gurl all women rode horses back then and had to wear a corset because a) posture is very important when horse riding and b) your chest will behave as if on their own personal trampoline
Can we for a moment respect the heck out of cosplayers who totally NAIL the looks adapting the cartoon dress to real life much more accurately than most costume designers?
Totally! I've been to a lot of conventions and whenever there is a Belle cosplayer I'm just in awe. We all just literally make way for the princess. Or if it's Cinderella or something like that. A Disney Princess makes the crowd part ways ;)
DO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME that Audra McDonald, who has the best singing voice in the world, was wearing a corset and probably live belting out those operatic notes bc she's a goddess of theatre, and Emma Watson wouldn't even wear a corset to just walk around? The nerve.
OMG I burned with rage when I saw what Emma Watson said about the corset. She's such an idiot she's always saying stupid s*** like that pretending like she knows what she's talking about while she doesn't have a clue.
@@malachai_coffee that isn't the only instance of her being a dumb a** and running her mouth and spreading misinformation. Glad she at least realizes how dumb she is but the damage is already done. Wow oh my god the world will end if an actress refuses to wear a corset. Seriously? If you cared this much about something that affected people's lives I would have understood. But so passionately swearing about a fantasy film? We live in a world full of shallowed brained people.
The problem with Belle’s dress is that Sandy Powell didn’t design it. Edit: Sandy Powell is the one who designed Cinderella’s live action dress and ALSO won an Oscar for costume designer.
i actually think jacqueline durran was more than capable of creating a stunning dress, but i think there were other factors (disney's marketing and the lack of a corset) that inevitably wound up preventing her from making the dress she wanted. the woman has created many of keira knightley's most memorable costumes, she's wildly talented. sandy powell did an AMAZING job with cinderella, but she also had full control. unfortunately jacqueline durran didn't.
cinnamon babe would’ve been fun to see alexandra byrne have a go at it too. but any talented costume designer would struggle designing an 18th century ball gown with the notes “make it just yellow”, “i want to be able to run around in it”, and “i won’t wear a corset”

the actor of Cinderella had a naturally small waste, but to fit the time line they still did a corset which made Lily James waste come up to a shocking 17 inches. Emma could've easily worn a corset. Sad fact is, the dress cost a LOT of money. They put thousands of small crystals on top of the dress but it became completely unnoticable. The details weren't showing off as they're supposed to and the expensive crystals didn't spice up the dress, making the dress look dull and cheap ://

ruclips.net/video/zNwTqanp0Aw/видео.html
Many celebrities see "Feminist" as a noun rather than a verb. It's all about identity and appearance rather than action. And frustratingly that trickles down into ordinary people too. So we end up having lots of irritating discussions about "Can a feminist do this?" or "Can a feminist do that?" rather than "Is this a feminist act?" It rips all the meaning and purpose out of the movement, and unfortunately I think that's the whole point.
The whole "corsets = oppression" is very 2010 feminism.
@BİKAS AYM BATMAN yes "Feminist" is literally a noun, but I was making more of a political statement when I said that it's a verb not a noun. I mean that's the attitude we should take.

Corsets aren’t oppressive they are undergarments. You can wear a corset without tight lacing. If it was such a problem for her she could have just worn stays
And they are comfy. When you wear them correct.
Weren’t corsets made to hold the dress up on a woman and to help with posture?
Also, 90% of the corsets if seen are basically meant for waist training which is NOT the point of a corset
the fact that all the corsets seen are meant for waist training is why she didn't wear one.

Why do men 🙄
Men also made fun of women in corsets, thinking them a sign of vanity
And the dctors at that time (who were also men) that said that wearing corsets would "rearrange your organs" or "break your ribs"
THEN male journalists made articles condemning the vanity of women and how they would sacrifice their health and fertility for the sake of fashion🙄
(and also how the few men who wore corsets were ridiculed and had to hide the fact they wore it, even if it was for medical reasons)
Of course it was men.
Yes! Yes, yes, yes!!! ...Are you on Instagram? I've been looking for a corset for myself, and I have questions for you!
Could you recommend a corset/ brand to me??

In an interview, Emma has admitted that she said no to Cinderella over concerns of how the character stood up as a “role model”.
“I didn’t know they were going to make Beauty And The Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella,” she told Total Film. “But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did."
Thank goodness she turned down Cinderella.
Must have been marvelous and an experience for the people there, especially the children. They will remember that.
I really prefer Cinderella's dress as white/sparkly silver. I think it looks better that way in the movie.

@@Emilykrabappel yea they made auroras dress be pink so as to not have two princesses in blue dresses. At the time sleeping beauty was released, there were only 2 other princesses: Snow White and Cinderella (Correct me if I'm wrong).
So pretty.
While it’s not quite the same, in the live action, with Lily James, at the end it shows her in a truly gorgeous white wedding gown.
The video "I hate 'live-action' Disney remakes" said it perfectly, in that the Beast looks like a rejected Guillermo del Toro design, lol.
Mr. Tumnus on steroids. That's one I've never heard before. Beast looks too human. My high school did better. And taht was just make-up and a wig. Plus hairy gloves for the claws. I wasn't in it, and its been a while so I could be remembering wrong.
Mr Tumnus on steroids xD
And the actor didnt help either. Nothing he did make me care about the beast in this movie.
oh my god I'm dying, it's so funny :DDD
I always thought that Cinderella's live action dress looked a lot more like Belle's animated dress.
Yeah just blue instead of gold
Oh shit u arent wrong it has that V kind of look on the shoulders
And there are a crap ton of yellow dresses in the background of the ballroom scene that would have looked stunning on Belle! All of the dresses in that movie, although maybe not entirely historically accurate, they still make an effort to resemble the 1840s and 50s, and on top of that, they're absolutely gorgeous! The thing is, a bunch of the dresses in the Live-Action BATB are accurate to the 1760s-80s as well, and they look wonderful! So it baffles me how they put Belle in such a terrible 'gown'!
Yeah except the colour.
Sameee
It's like they tried not to be sexist but then ended up being sexist, and the dress looks like what you'd buy your 8 year old daughter for halloween in Walmart.
No the dress is WORSE than the Halloween Walmart dresses
Lmao so true xD
Honestly, though!
Look cheap dress than expensive couture dress by designer.
And people think the original movie is sexist.
At this point, they shouldn't cast her role as belle..
Emma Watson had full control over the dress and truly, it was a grave mistake
I hate how she overlooked historical accuracy to be “woke” 😒
What do you mean full control
@@melissam597 you don't say? I love her back in harry potter now she's just this woke person who doesn't even know how harsh life can be and how most women in America or England are way more privileged for them to start wailing of inequality. Now I just realized that all this time it was Hermione granger who i actually idolized, because Emma and Hermione are different person.
@@melissam597 She also relied heavily on the design's of Dan Stevens's (Beast) daughter, who was a very little girl at the time. So, what we have literally came from the expertise of someone who has only lived a whopping 5 or 6 years in this world, and whose sense of fashion is heavily influenced by the toy market. It shows! I know she was going for, "let's make it for the little girls. If a little girl designs it the. They'll all love it!" Unfortunately, little girls are best left to make choices from adult designs, not the other way around.
@@stephanielim5544 I agree EW is comlletely overrated. My opinion: if the role of Belle would have been given to a (maybe lesser known but) competent actress, who can fulfil the requirements to participate in a musical (you know... As in... Can actually sing) this movie could have had an inkling of a chance.
I had the impression they added some of the lesser plot-lines because "queen of the internet" wanted them. Same with the dress. And I'm not saying EW is the root of the problems with that film, but she is certainly part of it.
I HATED her dress it just ruined the magical feel of the movie. yea maybe she stood out but not in a good way. She was like a sore thumb wearing a cheap prom dress from amazon
🤣 amen!
The Hot Topic version was better, lol.

I understand Emma Watson's intention concerning corsets, but she obviously doesn't master her topic enough to be given so much freedom over her costume...
i was gonna comment about micarah until i found yours!! love her, she also said this era in france would have been about structure and artifice (if i remember correctly) and emma's dress is too flowy and ethereal. it was such a waste
edit: the word she used was whimsical and not ethereal, I misquoted her
I agree with what Micarah said there too!
Morgane Jourdain love ur reference to micarah! That’s awesome! Totally agree.
She’s also being paid.... a TON of money.. throw ur political agenda elsewhere and at least do ur historical research before assuming you know anything about the era. That is why the job should be left to the designers not the ACTors.. what’s your job again?? Oh that’s right ACTING.
People who watch micarah should kind of know that its called stays not corset
Corsets CAN be oppressive a lot of women actually were pressured to wear corsets to be Skinner then a lot of women got hurt but I agree corsets are not the problem it's Peoples obsession with girls being super tiny
Just to be clear I don't think corsets are inherently bad or evil they just need to be worn correctly but there's so much propaganda surrounding corsets and they're actually use
And I really don't like how everybody's hating on Emma Watson for making a simple mistake we all probably would have made too just because the dress wasn't pretty enough for you guys
Istg, don't let me anywhere near movie making or there will be serious money and time invested into making corsets for the cast, to their body measurements, they will be historically accurate, require chemises underneath and will actually be pleasant to wear, once you've gotten used to it (personally my biggest beef with corsets is that they take more time to put them on than a bra, been there, done that).
i think even emma watson herself eventually went back and was like "i was actually stupid here, sorry"
I would hope so, considering that Belle's entire wardrobe fell flat due to her imposing HER vision on the costume designs instead of leaving it to the professional costume designer. Poor woman had to find so many tactful ways of saying "please, don't blame me for this or hold it against me when considering future jobs."
Edit: Not to mention, she fell into the trap so many movies do when trying to make their historical heroine seem modern and relatable. So, Emma had Belle going all over town doing the equivalent of the drunk girl at the club who left the bathroom with her dress tucked into her panties.
i would assume she probably did. because in her most recent movie, little women, she actually wore a corset. so maybe she just researched or smt.
I really hope so
Shouldn’t she do the same for Little Women also then?
Yeah, I feel like she's probably realized her own interpretation as incorrect and has gone and done research of her own. She doesn't seem like the kind of person to not be introspective ykno?
You didn’t even mention the worst part! The embroidery was GLITTER GLUE.
Are you serious...?!
The horror!
You're kidding...right?
For real?? 😷
Oh Lord...
Honestly Emma Watson was mad ignorant for the whole corset refusal/virtue signaling thing
Yep
She made "being a feminist" her entire personality when women are actually more nuanced and diverse than that
They shouldn’t have cast her for this role she’s perfect for other roles but not this one tbh
@@aeoligarlic4024 yeah, she refused the corset bc of her "feminism", but later she still wore corset in Little woman 2019 :V
This is the best answer. This is exactly why her "statement" falls apart. Thank you.
The dress wasn’t Belle’s dress, it was Emma Watson’s dress.
This whole movie was Emma Watson's ego project
I wish I could like this more than once!
@ALLEGRA F ikr, I don't know why everyones being disrespectful to Emma while they can just state that they dislike.
And her posture... eesh.
I saw a pre-release showing, and the unanimous reviews among those talking was that it was like Hermione phoned in a some line-reading.
Idk why, but it made me think of Keira Knightly and how she is professional to let the crew do their work with no complaints. And she ended up looking stunning because of it.
Now I feel a slight bit more special for having naturally almost bone straight hair, like I don't even need a straightener. XD
And I'm sorry to say this, but I also think Emma did wrong for refusing to wear a corset she was originally provided.
@@purevenus6359 To distance her from Hermione. Didn't work out too well tho.
If she is so feminist that rejects fancy dresses (the closing and jewelry, btw were the only capital women were allowed to have those days and she just... reject it??) why they made a whole scene where she is
flaunts in this "beautiful" (no) dress instead of just give her something simple to wear?
@@hatawaaztec4270 Nice reply😂
i’m probably going to get dragged for this but i think their biggest mistake when making this movie was letting Emma Watson play the role of Belle. that’s not on her, she was given the part and worked with it, but there’s other actresses who i think would’ve captured Belle’s essence better.
I’m glad I’m not the only thinking she shouldn’t have got the role. A lot of people hyped it up just because she “looks like Belle” ( I don’t really see it ) and I did not have high expectations when I found out she actually got the role.
Factss
Haha I'm just thinking of in a few hundred years when people will make movies with references to bras today as being torture devices.

Why did you write "I'm sorry don't hate me" in the thumbnail? I thought EVERYONE hated Emma Watson's yellow dress
Yeah it's common sense...to me at least 😂
F T there is always that one person that’s why
Also isn’t Belle’s dress in the cartoon technically gold?
Because now days if you criticise something , people will get offended and call you a hater .
A Real dress from the 17th is way more heavy and uncomfortable
You guys are so picky.
It didn't really even feel like she was playing a character, it was just like filming Emma Watson around on the set. To me Belle isn't in the movie at all, it's just Emma and the Beast
Out of curiosity, who do you think is the best princess now? (I like to see how people's interpretations of Disney movies change as they get older).
Let's just be real, Emma shouldn't have had the role as Belle from the beginning
I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but a girl can't sing and the wardrobe for Belle shouldn't have been in her hands. She was the iceberg who sunk the ship, and unfortunately she snagged the door
It felt more like emma watson playing hermione granger pretending to be Belle.
@@inkatana49 tbh I agree
As much as I love Emma Watson, she just wasn't the best choice for Belle, who was subtle, patient, calm and easy-going and that's what makes her so admirale and lovable. The way Emma plays Belle is the polar opposite, and it kind of feels like I'm watching a calmer Hermione. Personality heavily affects the tone of the story. In the end it doesn't feel as memorable and strong as the original. Her dress certainly didn't help the situation. Very underwhelming.
Finally, some one who shares their opinion in a respectful way. That wouldn’t hurt Emma Watson’s feeling
i think maybe what they were trying to go for was that belle had these walls up because of how the town treated her and what happened with her mother, and the beast helped her let those walls down and in turn they both learned a life lesson. but the execution of it was done really terribly which i think is probably the issue. it might not be emma’s acting in the movie that’s the problem, it’s probably the writing and/or directing
yeah, I think another actress would’ve been better. The movie could’ve been so much
Hm. I see what you mean. That makes a lot of sense
Yeah I wish they had tricked her and just built the corset into the dress’s structure “see Emma no corset here”😉
I've seen more accurate and prettier versions of Belle's dress at Comic-con. Emma wasn't Belle at all for me, the rest of the movie and the characters were fabulous... Just not Belle. The actor felt wrong, the dress was wrong, the dance was lacking and the emotion felt hollow. It was such a shame.
@Layla Goodon-Witter tbh Cinderella's live action dress was superior to comic con ones👀
@Layla Goodon-Witter ayere watch your mouth!!!
ME TOO. She looks old and not pretty enough
I agree. Belle was my favorite growing up and I was disappointed.
It wouldn’t even be that big of a deal… if she wasn’t the main character lol
I agree, its especially bad when compared to live action cinderella, who changed the dress drastically but still made it seem magical!
i think not wearing a corset is a dumb "feminist statement" ive researched and watched tons of people talk about the topic. corsets were bras. we didnt have bras until very recent time. it wasnt a torture device only media makes it look that way. and corsets arent painful if you wear them correctly
and even if corsets were harmful, emma wouldn't be betraying feminism by wearing one since its only purpose would be to make the film more historically accurate!
@@rita6276 she wanted it to look more real can we for jst a second keep the history nd facts aside nd think what would be perfect for a film for the generation of this decade.
@@kyrakytana i saw cinderalla nd her waist was so thin like it wasn't real at all nd maybe they were going to do the same to belle
Niamh Lauren honestly I feel like animated Belle would wear a corset
I’m sorry, but to be absolutely honest, her dress looks like layered Kraft cheese slices.

I understand it’s her choice but not everything is about feminism and corsets were prevalent during that time.
she wore a corset in Little Women, and later said in an interview that the corset was "worth it." Its an even bigger eye roll there. Like, wth??
@@winterblossom9546 I get what you mean but i do see a difference like for belle who doesnt care so much about apearance, making a gown that has structure but without the need of a corset under it seems fine to me also considering it's a fantasy wolrd. As for little women she plays Meg who cares a lot about fashion and being accepted in society so not wearing a corset would have went against the character (altough the clothes were pretty innacurate in that but thats another subject)
Claudelle Myrand - But it was Wardrobe who dressed Belle. Even if Wardrobe took Belle’s preferences into consideration, she wouldn’t have made it *_SO SUPER_* plain and rather ugly (considering it’s supposed to be a 18/19th-century ballgown.)
Even simple dresses back in those days weren’t so plain.
Claudelle Myrand ///
The no-corset rule played a big part in it, though.

Saying it’s a feminist statement to not wear a corset is a tad ignorant and perhaps these people should do some research on them before forming a full opinion.

corsets were like a bra back then. and what’s wrong with a little support?

@@thetillerwiller4696 Pretry sure if you want people to believe that corsets were torso support and not intended to warp the body into having a tiny waist, you should not be talking about indulging in unhealthy food and being molded by your corset to still look attractive. Ngl, that zoom on her dress makes it look like she’s wearing tablecloth.
I love how Emma said Belle rides a horse like Lily James didn't in Cinderella...
@@aishatarver193 agreed
also, a corset would've 100% made her performance SO MUCH BETTER. playing a princess has so much to do with your posture and the lightness of your movements to give it that truly magical factor, and a corset can really really help an actress get used to that. even if the purpose was to portray belle as a more "active" princess they still needed that.
Exactly, and she had no problem wearing a corset in Little Women, where she obviously had no liberty to make terrible costume decisions.
Ginny Bretz it was created by men that corsets are terrible.
@@thetillerwiller4696 Tons of things were created by men. Corsets were the earliest version of a bra. Many corsets if worn properly are comfortable.

So I actually met someone that worked on this film and they were telling me some things that reminded me of your video. Let's just say you are right the designer had other plans but someone made a stink about her ideas and so she had to quickly change the costume.
I feel like she’s the historical costume adviser, but the producers silenced her in favor of Emma Watson’s uneducated views on corsets.
Mon Mothma exactly
Mon Mothma agreed, Emma is such a hypocrite and doesn’t follow her own feminist beliefs. 🤦🏻♀️
@@Celestial7Heavens preach 🙌
It really struck a nerve for me.
she's the ultimate KAREN in hollywood
Taking a princess role but refusing to wear a corset because you're trying to make a statement (which doesn't even make any sense) is imo a dick move and it would never have been accepted where I work.
it doesn’t even look Victorian, it’s kinda looks like a simple “wedding gown” in yellow.
More like a prom dress. Believe me, I work with outdoor weddings, and even the more simple wedding dresses are more elegant than the gowns Belle wears.
It doesn’t take place in the Victorian era. It takes place in the 18th century. Victorian era doesn’t start until the 19th century.
Tbf a Victorian dress would’ve been closer to accurate, not by any stretch accurate but at least...historical
It’s not Victorian
Mary Ryan I think they mean that the dress doesn’t even reach the elegance and structure of a Victorian dress, nonetheless a Rococo dress! :)
SV SCRIB Exactly!
