Unfortunately, once you’ve had one concussion you are likely to get more. Slips and falls, jumping off stages, and certain movements can cause concussions even without hitting your head. I would from now on always keep an eye on how you are feeling when doing your crazy awesome fighting. Stay safe!
Sad but true 😬
@@JillBearup please be safe. I enjoy your videos!
I was going to mention the same thing. The first thing I through of when you said that you didn't hit your head is that you also said you were learning to jump off the stage without sounding like an elephant. Jumping off a stage and landing hard can cause the effects a of previous concussion to worsen since the brain is still recovering and tender. It is always a good idea to listen to what you body is telling you.
Yep - probably the jumps. There is enough vertical force there to bounce your brain off the top of your skull.
It's crazy reading this comment and seeing all the jump cuts of the ... jumps.
Huge props to your first aid-knowing fight partner for recognising the signs and making sure everything was alright.
I was very impressed! Even as someone who's done workplace first aid refeeshers for decades, I'm not sure I'd pick up on that subtle a continuing concussion...?
Here we find that a cocktail-length summer dress with a cheerful print is ideal combat wear, Makes perfect sense when you think about it. Freedom of movement, high visibility to facilitate rallying your henchmen, etc...
I imagine the UK grading scale is causing some misunderstanding here for Americans. In the UK, the top mark is at 70% and up, rather than 90% and up. Jill saying she didn’t think she could beat an 80% wasn’t her settling for B- mediocrity. 80% is actually really freaking good.
Good to know👍🏻
Yeah, I was kinda thinking about how harsh the grading sounded, and being further puzzled by 80+ being the threshold for distinction! Not an American, btw, but a Scandinavian. I guess we're more used to being more encouraging in our grading 😄
It also varies depending on the exam board.
In ACTT exams (like this one) 78% is the threshold for a distinction.
In APC exams at advanced level, 80% is the threshold for a merit.
@@MagnusMoerkoereJohannesen I'm finnish and have no idea what you are talking about (we use modified romanian grading in schools).
Hard landings when you jump (the ones where you sound "like an elephant") are entirely capable of giving you a headache or light concussion. I've never had it quite that bad, but years of orienteering have given me plenty of experience with hard landings by short drops. Real skull-rattlers.
This is actually how I envisioned the training of Dumbeldore's Army in the Room of Requirements when I read the books. 🖖
OK best comment 😂
@@JillBearup Thank you!🥳
“I need to do something with my hair.” Because contrary to movie logic, long tresses flowing around your face does not in fact make you a better swordswomen.
Sad but true.
Just for life in general, long flowing hair is not practical, unless you are sitting still, doing nothing. Even something as mundane as washing the dishes, you want to get your hair out of the way.
Unless you're an Elf.
Somehow, those long, gorgeous locks stay sane no matter what they do.
@@isabelleblanchet3694 It's excellent for looking dramatic, and infinitely easier to put in a ballet bun than short hair. I also whip people my hair it when it's wet. So there's that? It can be a weapon all of its own!
(But no, for real, excessively long hair is a nightmare)
@@isabelleblanchet3694 Thanks to the pandemic, I've learned this firsthand in a way that I knew but never truly understood before.
I am dying every time you say overenthusiastic Viking. Sending this to my best friend right now, she deserves to see this. In case she’s here already: shout-out to Ahkuna
Your fight partner is solid worth - I appreciate how she looked out for you. And congratulations on the exam, and the high pass! There's nothing quite like just nailing a fight exam.
not using a cape for an incredibles scene feels right. edna approves lol. also this looks so fun
NO CAPES!
“Landing like an elephant” is probably what triggered your concussion, mild as it was. That was my experience, had to learn how to land, as you did. Makes a difference. Either way, glad you’re okay and glad you did so well.
Your concussion feels could have been caused by just the spinning and jumping you were doing. You don’t have to hit your head to get a concussion 🤕. Amazing view into your fun world. Thanks for sharing
most knockouts in boxing are caused by rapidly rotating the head which makes the brain bounce against the inside of the skull. Obviously, other things can also bounce ones brain against the skull.
If your child doesn't have a *My mom will (stage) fight you!* shirt, it is a missed opportunity.
I think the jumping on and off stage might have jiggled the brain
Definitely possible!
I was also going to suggest that it might have been fast movement rather than a blow...happened to me sometimes in the aftermath of my soccer/football induced concussions.
This is absolutely something I would totally suck at, but it's fun seeing someone else do it. It's like a stage fighting reality show. Strictly Come At Me, or something.
"It's like a fencing stance but broader."
Now you're reminding me of Avatar the Last Airbender:
Teacher: "Assume your stance. Wider."
Aang: "But you're not even looking..."
Teacher: "WIDER."
I will never not be delighted to hear about someone's joy in something like this. Thanks for bringing us along!
11:35 Sort of like what my friend did. He stupidly stepped into the street and was promptly hit by a car. He just remembers a massive thump to his side, flying through the air then sliding along the rather abrasive road surface.
He thought he might have been knocked out because the paramedics arrived very very quickly. But no, he never lost conciseness. He had been hit by the ambulance.
The paramedics stabilized him then had a legal dilemma. They needed to get the accident victim to the hospital ASAP, but doing so would mean leaving the scene of an injury accident, a felony.
They decided to take their chances with the law and left for the hospital. Turned out they made the right choice.
So if you have to be hit by a car, get hit by an ambulance, because they usually come with trained paramedics.
that's gonna have to be the best argument i have heard for leaving the scene of an accident i have ever heard.
That's interesting! Over here (Ireland), it's actually the last thing you'd want to be hit by. If they're going fast enough to hit you without stopping in time, they're probably going to a callout. And that means they legally cannot stop under any circumstance. They will call ANOTHER ambulance to come and get you. So if you get hit by it, it's just a heavy af vehicle moving fast.
Jill, take it easy on your head.
It's really, REALLY easy to reconcuss after a concussion.
Just wanting to say take care of yourself...from a fellow 'multiple concussion' sufferer.
Lilly is absolutely me when I have to take care of my friends. Gentle roasting in between examines and treatments, lol
So good you have a friend who can pick if something is off, and who will look after you.
*step, step glide, step step glide...stabby stabby...pause... pirouette, pirouette...over head glance ... witty banter, witty banter, hands on hips laugh... backflip, backflip , stabby once more...left foot in, left foot out...tis only a flesh wound...time to walk about*
Warm is just a warm-up, Nothing else or more. It’s not a competition, it getting you ready.
"And you get to swing a sword around! What could be better?" *Insert completely coincidental and unrelated flashback to certain Indiana Jones scene*
Congratulations Jill, 83% is, _ahem_ swish! Lots of _eeek_ about the conc from clonk, but how brilliant to fight someone who has the diagnostics built in. Added bonus for sharing Sherlock with us, lovely video!
I still remember when I knocked myself slipping on carpet and planted the side of my head into the ground on the first day of an unarmed course. I was more embarrassed than anything else as I'd been doing actual martial arts alongside stage combat for like 4 years to that point. Kept trying to get up only to have spinning stars and a more spinny world sit me down again. Fortunately by day 2 I was alright enough to carry on and got cleared by medical so I was still able to complete it. Good on you for the rally, hope things don't continue to bother you and your head gets solid with time. Thank you for the candid look at your craft, very fun to watch.
Title: FIGHT ME
Me, a person who avoids confrontation: ....n...no thanks.
Jill you are hilarious. You have really natural comedy energy, the way you deliver a joke or sarcasm is beaut. Love your videos.
Getting concussed and not remembering how it happened is terrifying. Speaking from personal experience. Especially when you “wake up” and find yourself going about your business with no memory of anything that happened that day.
Take care Jill! I’m glad that it was a only minor concussion and passed quickly. I agree with other comments, I think the jumping off the stage is what did it. Unless Lily remembers hitting you on the head. Also, wears the video of the full fight????
I'll admit this comment is coming from the fact I'm having difficulty finding a good tutorial for a self-made crown braid, and I got distracted looking at yours in this video, but I'd love to see a video talking about long hair during fight scenes, good and the bad - Princess Leia's cinnamon buns are slightly ridiculous but at least they don't get in her way!
Lily, thank you so much for being a great fight partner.
I am inclined to agree that poor jumping form might have been the trigger for the recurrence of the concussion symptoms.
I am frequently amazed at how much difference technique makes in sounding or not sounding like an elephant. It has to do with how good your dampers are.
What fun! I would really enjoy learning stage combat. And OF COURSE learning to jump down 3 or 4 feet without sounding like an elephant is a useful life skill!
I offer this purely from experience. Mild vertigo attacks can present similarly to a concussion. Watching your activity for the course, especially the jumping down from the stage could shock your system into a vertigo attack. I had to spend almost a year figuring that out, now some 20 years later, the vertigo attacks are far more pronounced, but I'll take them over a concussion any day.
Not sure how much of it you got to see but Deal is a lovely town. My dad used to part-own the Royal Hotel on the seafront which is no more than 200m from that theatre. As a teenager I worked in the kitchens for a couple of summers in the mid-90s - by the looks of it it hasn’t changed too much 😁
It’s a very pretty place!
Also, Solleys farm nearby for great ice cream!
I did all kinds of am-dram and the odd martial art in the theatre as a kid and it truly hasn’t changed in the slightest it’s pretty surreal
@@lyooyiylklykyokyklky I had to Google where Deal was and Solley's farm was the main thing highlighted on the map apart from Deal itself. Must be quite the place.
I hope your concussion is okay! Lilly is so adorable. The two of you are so funny together. It looked like a wonderful time.
I got a concussion once by falling on my tailbone. The shock when right up my spine into my head. It could definitely be that the shocks from stomping off the stage jostled up your spine into your brain.
That sounds…painful!

I love the stage combat training videos. It’s fun to follow along.
Excellent display of the work, and hazards, of the profession.
Always bring a first-aider. :D
The running commentary from Lilly (apologies if that's the wrong spelling) in that tone familiar to anyone who has to look after others when they're not necessarily capable of doing so themselves might have had me dying, just a smidge...

It may be niche but that's where enthusiasm and presenting style make things interesting to watch. Case in point, how pleased with yourself you look at "I'm hilarious". 😂
Congratulations on your exam! I got a concussion rollerskating the only time I did without a helmet. I have a few seconds of lost time right after I fell and I hit my head. But I felt fine and drove home from the rink with just soreness and minor swelling and bleeding at the impact spot. Within 2 hours I was vomiting and couldn't walk a straight line, blinding headache. Recurring bouts of severe nausea, headache and brain fog for about a year. Never rollerskated again, unfortunately. Even writing this triggers my anxiety, the nausea was so bad.
Bless you and your dedication! Love the videos!
Jill, you are my favorite badass! Keep up the great work!
Keep up the entertaining work! Sending you my highest quality healing energy from Calgary, Ab, Canada!
You can hit the inside of your head with the inside of your head, without hitting the outside of your head at all.
Did you know that woodpeckers have a sort of a neck hinge and lots of extra room inside their skulls, just so they don't hit the inside of their head with the inside of their head, even while whamming away at a tree with the outside of their head?
I thought "you pick the incredibles" was a figure of speech.
Hey me too! Six months post concussion and I still am uber protective of my head
Why did I read the title in Meta Knight's voice? A mystery I may never know the answer to.
I think the mild concussion might have been caused by repeated stage jumps.
Dance off, bro! Me and you!
Thanks for such a great and insightful video! I enjoy these informative videos on various careers or hobbies very much!
I am sorry to hear about the head injury, though I am glad it was not severe. I am also glad you reported it because it has the side-effect of being a good demonstration for others interested in fake fighting that even with professionals, things can go awry, so it's critical to be careful, and to have help from other professionals such as the help from your fight partner to check your eyes and coordination and general state of health after an injury, regardless of how seasoned a pro one is.
Safety first!
To answer the title, Nope. You're a delightful internet bean spreading entertaining educational content

3:26. Yes, yes you are. It took me about 2 seconds to catch the pun, which means I caught it and started grinning almost exactly as you were declaring yourself to be hilarious. The timing was *chefs kiss* perfect and made the joke better!
doing stuff for the joy of it is what it's all about. Good for you!
Yes, meeting new & interesting people & then bond while beating each other up. I am familiar with this.
I think I would be better suited to an accompanying "stage cowering and screaming in terror" course.
"... maintaining eye contact ... all the time ... which I definitely don't find difficult at all."
I'm not going to go there with how many times I yelled "eyes" at her during practice 😂😂
I have no doubt that I'd lose the fight. Also worried about what your MK-style finisher move is, Jill. 'You have to wear wedge heels for a week!' FATALITY.
On another note, thanks for looking after our Jill, Lilly(sp?). You're a treasure! Not a national treasure though, because Nicholas Cage will then try to steal you.
*Lily 😉
And honestly? Jill has marvelously hidden how often *I* get hurt on these courses. The difference is people gloss over my injuries at this point because it's just... it just inevitable 😂
@@lilygrace4766 No shame in a little mishap occasionally. Even dramatic acting has perils, not to mention any stunts or combat. It's great to see you supporting one another and coming back for more!

I've had a strange urge to fight you for years so this is finally my chance...
But alas, won't be able to make it 😕
Maybe next year. Count down the days to your defeat, Sursum Ursa 😤
Interesting that the Sword and Scoundrel course is being held at the Malthouse Theatre... My dad worked in that building for about 20-25 years when it belonged to Barretts of Canterbury.
Having been in the military for over 20 years and Fenced (Foil, Epee and Sabre) as well as boxing to a fairly high level, would those skills be a hinderence or a help on one of these courses. The reason I ask is I am looking for an active hobby!
They would definitely help! You’d already understand the footwork and blade work stuff, so you’d be able to focus on the “stage” aspects more easily instead of learning all the skills from scratch!
IME it absolutely helps HOWEVER you've got to constantly remind yourself that the point is always to tell the story not to "win" and if you've spent decade honing fencing skills, relearn to make every move significantly larger and slower than you would in the sport.
@@zenistfpv This is very much it! In my experience, people with a weapons or combat background look good doing stage combat, it's just a matter of making things stagey and remembering that it's about teamwork, i.e. you're fighting your partner, not an opponent.
The title and thumbnail combined gave the notification I got for this video a very threatening aura. I found it exquisite.
I just got into stage combat a month ago and now i'm intermediate and obsessed! it's so fun!
ohhh this looks fun
...maybe i should think about trying a stage fighting thing someday 🤨🤨🤨
Neurologically compromised Jill is neurologically compromised. Stay safe, we need you.
There's a small problem of a small continent, and ocean between me and Canterbury, otherwise, I would love to do stage combat. I've got years and years of martial arts, and an overwhelming love for exaggeration, and being bonkers.
Having once broken an epee blade on someone's body and luckily missed them with the stub ... they are only sorta safe
One thing to make sure is that people you're around have a basic understanding of first aid and what to do if you're concussed. Especially if you're doing an activity where there is an increased likelihood of concussion.
I had a major concussion years ago.
I fell off a galloping horse. Luckily I broke my fall. With my head. On a tree trunk we were going past. 😭
I actually lost consciousness, was out for about 5min. My companion called an ambulance, after making sure I had stopped choking on my tongue.
Then I woke up. So they cancelled the ambulance. 🙄
I was talking nonsense and couldn't form new memories - we had the same conversation over and over as I couldn't remember it. We went to the hospital in the end, took me hours to be able to form short term memories again. Couldn't remember what month it was, sat up in the middle of a CT scan because I forgot where I was.
That took me days to get back to fully functional.
Always make sure someone you're with knows what they're doing with first aid.
Edit: and always wear a helmet if you're horse riding/cycling
Congratulations on the distinction! That was great to watch 🙂
Keep a very close eye out Jill! My dad had a minor head injury that resulted in concussion symptoms that would come back whenever he got tired. Turned out to be something called a intracranial epidural hematoma. The slow bleeding eventually put enough pressure on the brain to cause a subdural hematoma which almost killed him.
Hope the head gets better. Great to see behind the scenes, the course looks awesome. As someone with several decades of martial arts experience, this looks so fun. Congrats on your score. I personally love your fight breakdowns.
"...I was completely unable to jump off the stage without sounding like an elephant!"
*Plays clip of Jill jumping of the stage incredibly lightly, far lighter than I would ever be able to do even if I practised for a 1000 years*

Very much enjoyed this clip; more, please!
As one who has suffered more concussions than I can remember (badump-tsss), I can say you A) never quite get over them (not even including complications like Post-Concussive Syndrome) and B) are indeed more likely to see another concussion (as Waffle mentioned). The skull is not the greatest armor against itself.
That said, please, please, please show us more stage combat and choreography! I used to want to do fight choreography on the side (even choreographed a "fight scene"* in high school drama) and would love to see more! :D
