    "Make a fingerless glove" Dear God no! Gloves are the worst! Of all the thankless, finicky, miss-by-a-half-millimetre-and-it's-unusable projects, that is the most painful! Buy gloves and customize them!
    (BTW, shooting gloves are only fingertips attached by straps to a wrist band. They protect the fingers from the cut of the bowstring. Fingerless gloves are the opposite of what you want.)

  • @paulroberts3639
    @paulroberts3639 2 года назад +256

    Definitely an arm bracer. Hard leather to survive that bow string. And a strip of soft leather on the other arm to mop your brow, or a spiked bracer to wallop various enemies with a back-hander, depending on how refined your character is. As someone who did competition archery for many years, the thought of drawing any bow without wearing an arm bracer, brings up memories of painful red welts. No self respecting short bow wielding Rogue would be caught out of doors without one.

    "Who has four kilos of leather scraps?" Uh... *raises hand* Four tanned hides and LOTS of scraps of various grains, thicknesses and colors. Also I have a literal drawer of feathers. If you want to make an archery glove, bracers and upper arm armor then I highly recommend tracking down the Butterick "Making History" patterns B5580 (scale arm armor, pouches, sword "holder") and B5733 (padded bracers and greaves, sword mitts, archery glove, pouches and mug & ax loops). If you're feeling overly ambitious and have thin enough leather, they also have patterns for 6 different styles of footwear (B5233). For a hooded calf-length vest I recommend the "Sentinel" pattern from McCall's Cosplay line (M2080).
    Your sorcerer will need spell components, either in bottles or pouches, and depending on their preferred casting methods either a wand or staff. A staff can, of course, double as a defensive weapon. Of course an archer needs a quiver (another use for your leather!), either just for the arrows or for both arrows & bow. (My earth mage has a feather cloak, a bottle of Wolf Sight Elixir and a bottle of Phoenix Ashes, as well as a staff/walking stick. All of which I made myself.)

    • @wendyzski1
      @wendyzski1 2 года назад +7

      The only reason I don't have 4 kilos of leather straps is because I ruthlessly pruned my stash back when my husband moved in so that he actually had a place to sit and read books. Pro tip for the extremely cheap - you can get a lot of workable leather yardage out of really fugly leather furniture. I probably had 18 square feet of forest green leather taken from an office chair I scavenged from the trash and used for several years before the assembly fell apart. I skinned it before I tossed the interior bits.
      There are legends told of a group of SCA folk who purchased a leather couch on sale from a thrift store, took it into the parking lot and skinned it, and then probably bend all the bits from the inside - much to the deep confusion of the people working at the thrift store

    I love everything about this, and I love how enthusiastic you are about it while still explaining it eloquently, and mixing in bits of what real life is actually like with the fantasy escapism aesthetic.
    I think your character needs something to protect her outer arms. She's using a bow so mobility is important, but deflecting cuts to the arms is also important, if that's something that happens to her on occasion. Otherwise I think bracers that lace up (the one not protecting her from the bow string could have a pouch or tiny sheath!) or a tote for her (and you) to carry all these bits in. Patchwork brown leather isn't quite with the aesthetic but it's good disguise against wannabe thieves

      Yeah, I have probably about 5kg of leather scraps too. Because reasons. Technically because my kids need shoes and we have no usable shoe shop here and buying shoes online isn’t my favourite lottery. But mostly because I’m over-ambitious and short of attention span when there are more crafts to do. Why finish my decades-old wedding quilt when I could be learning fingerloop braiding? Why sew name labels on my kids’ school clothes when I could be making Spräng bags I don’t actually need? Hey look! Needlelace!

    also, bracers are very easily made because it is basically just the business end of a sleeve, only a size smaller so it laces on. it should be of a rather stiff piece of leather, though. you might need to laminate it on a stiffer backer. (with Barge cement if you have that brand over there)

    Nice first project. If you're wanting economic veg tan, I'd get overstock belly cuts from wickett and craig (or a more local, direct tannery). They're like 6ft by a varying width of 6-18inches at some 7$ a pop.
    Also, there's an old dying method called vinegaroon that works with veg tan where you mix metal shavings (or steel wool) with vinegar until it rusts, and then paint it onto the leather; something to do with tannins, so it stains wood too.

If you ever need more leather laces it is relatively easy to make from scrap leather.

    Once upon a time I made some Greek Hoplite armour out of cardboard, and leather effect vinal and glue and lots of those brass paper holding together things. It took me about a day. It took me about another day to move the opening from the front to the side. When I'd finished it looked pretty good. Unfortunately I've no photos of it because this was a long time ago before people had computers. It also took me about two days to make a half sized hoplon shield out of the top of a linen basket, cardboard and strips of newspaper glued onto the lid. Once painted it looked surprisingly effective.
    This just goes to show that with a little thought, some bits and pieces you can make anything. BTW, I think your armour looks great, I wouldn't have gone for scale armour but that's me.

    Jilllllllll, your armer looks amazing and I wanted the share some of the things I learned making a leather book cover :) To get really beautiful seams I lightly hammered the corners and edges flat to encourage it to lay down in the direction I wanted. It helps too to keep the leather extra crisp and flat if there’s a bit of glue to keep it down. I also have used a razor to shave off the thickness from the leather in areas where it folds on itself to reduce some of the bulk. I love your videos, I wish you happy costuming!

    Fun fact, most of that leather will sew amazingly well in a sewing machine. Especially the thinner, softer stuff. Which means you can skip the hole punching and thick string and just sew your scale strips directly to your backing fabric.
    (The thick string method is what you'd use for metal scales or for really thick, tough leather like you used for your side lacing reinforcement; you an machine sew that too but it's too tough for most household sewing machines.)
    Side note, the bottoms of the scales should also be sewn down so that they don't fly up and so that it's harder for someone to slide a sword or dagger up underneath them.
    But altogether, not bad! Even more impressive that you actually did it - I'm one of those experts in theory who gets too intimidated by my own perfectionism to even start.

    gloves and bracers are a great idea for, well, anyone wielding a bow. However, the gloves have to at least be fingered on the pointer, middle, and ring finger of the hand drawing back the bow string. As someone who does a lot of archery, I can say that a lot of pain is saved by having leather in between my skin and the bowstring. (this includes the fingers pulling back the string, as well as the inner forearm of the arm holding the bow, which the bowstring is surprisingly prone to hitting whilst firing if your arm is not completely twisted away from it.)

  • @Shuddarun
    @Shuddarun 2 года назад

    This turned out better than could reasonably expected, very nicely done! So far as bracers and bows go, a letter inner-arm guard would approximate what archers use/used to protect from the bowstring (I am speaking from experience when I say that holding the bow also matters a lot if you don't literally want you inner forearm turning dark purple). I have been trying to fabricate a custom sword (also without any experience with or equipment for metallurgy), and have so far made a rough approximation via 3D printer and cannibalized Renaissance Fair wooden sword. Looking forward to the next project!

    sooo... i just watched this...

    (fiendlock because Gm was like "oh you're making a warlock, well if you go fiend we can kinda reskin that for this demon in my setting and that'd fit neatly" so i did, because why not?)
    She wears scale armor, grew up in a monastery dedicated to the god of knowledge in that setting, (read: library), loves discovering new and exotic places and digging through them for interesting things both magical items and history stuff.
    and dreams of building her own library in the town the party is based out of.
