    My j college made the hurdle spaces one foot closer to each other but now at my uni we hurdle at the regular distance between hurdles. moving them closer together definitely helps so much. It trains your body to sprint faster and you won’t even notice the normal distance in the actual race. Great vid 👌

    As an Australian MasterCoach I totally agree with your teaching advice of reduced heights and distances for young hurdlers. If they are not able to get their footwork touchdown under the centre of gravity, then it is quite useless performing drill work and or increasing a degree of difficulty.

    This is perfect!
    I currently have some athletes who have mastered 25ft but others at 15FT so I plan on doing two sets of spacing.

    Outstanding video as always Micheal. I just got my grade 10 daughter converted from 4 step to 3 step and she is flying. She qualified for Provincial Championships with the 4 step, knows she needs to be faster to have a shot at winning at Provincials, and so she finally tried the 3 step, and what a difference. No more shuffling to the hurdle, no more switching lead legs every hurdle, and to top it off, she has a tender right hamstring going into this weekend, and leading with the right is aggravating it, so leading with the left is going to work out well.
    One last practice tonight with lower and shorter, and she should crush it on Friday.

      @@coachwelly Yes she did! She won a Bronze Medal at the Provincial Championships! She also improved her PB from 13.73 to a a 12.88, dropped almost a full second off. And that was on her first full run over the hurdles at full distance and height, didn't miss a step.

    Interesting. You're the first coach I've seen online that puts them as close at 15 ft. I have done a gazillion 15 ft runs throughout my entire career (PB 13.15s - 1999). Dutch coaches used to copy this method. They brought forth quite a few hurdlers that lifted their leadleg and had ineffective take-offs. And also hurdlers that couldn't (properly) transition to full distance. That's why I as a coach, even knowing the pitfalls, prefer to build up from 20 - 22 ft with my hurdling group. Rarely do I go shorter and reduce height.
    For the youngest groups I coach (U14)... I prefer to start at 19 - 20 ft, and then 50cm or 60cm and upwards. The taller and/or better ones can 3-stride more freely, and the few kids that can't 3-stride even over the lowest... well they're fine with 4 or 5-striding or don't really want to do hurdles anyway. Occasionally I put up hurdles (near) full distance, for the U14 / U16 kids I want to learn a 4-stride. It can be very frustrating for a kid that isn't quite able to 3-stride (yet), to have to run a 5-stride in races.

    Hi Michael, thank you for your great videos. I'm a female coach, and I have a HS boy hurdler: Would I still count the same feet, a size 8 foot size?

    Hello Coach, do I place the 1st hurdle on the regular mark then 15ft in between. Or do I start 15 ft from the starting line and 15 ft in between each hurdle?
    I have a HS hurdler struggling with 3 steps.
    Also what’s a good drill to help keep arms controlled when running over hurdle?

    • @coachwelly

      I typically have the kids do a two step approach, so 12 feet from the hurdle 1 then 15ft between each hurdle thereafter

      @@coachwelly great. Thank you so much! I will try it out tomorrow. Also, when running off of the hurdle, approximately how far out should lead and trail leg land off the hurdle?

    • @coachwelly
      @coachwelly  2 месяца назад +1

      @@LifeWithJ_Marie Normally its about a meter for girls, about 1.4ish for boys. For this particular drill, it should be about a meter for both genders. If you are dealing with younger kids, the focus should be simply getting down as close to the previous hurdle as possible to give you space to get to the next hurdle in a rhythmic manner. Does that make sense?

      @@sonubhalothiya9581. got it. You have to drill, a lot of drilling when it comes to crossing your body. Also the jumping probably happens because you are taking off too close to the hurdle. Your take off should be 6-7feet (1.9-2m) away from it.
