I think Scott is downplaying how unique and different the Master System/Game Gear Sonic games can be, particularly Sonic 1 and 2. Those are completely different games in terms of level design compared to the Genesis versions, and they actually are quite good when i played them on Origins Plus

I think the most frustrating thing about Sonic Origins is the fact that the Sonic 3 prototype music actually sounded really good on original hardware with the Genesis soundchip. But then they had Jun Senoue try to touch those tracks up for Origins instead of just using the original prototype versions on the ROM, and they stick out like a sore thumb. They don't blend in with the rest of the OST at all anymore! It's weird how Jun Senoue just can't do chiptune anymore. Then again, I think it was more like the programmers translated his compositions for games like 3D Blast because Green Grove is also a banger. But Sonic 4's OST was also stinky when he tried to do "retro."
Jun Senoue is the main composer for most of the modern 3D games (mostly notable in the Adventure games), his guitarist skills are drastically different than comparing it to Masato Nakamura (STH1&2, Advance), Howard Drossin (S3&K, Spinball), Naofumi Hataya (SCD), Masafumi Ogata (SCD)... they've handled the classic 2D games while chiptune isnt Senoue's style. also, i never realized Senoue composed Sonic 4! (probably cause i never play it) big wtf for me.
@@Retrblu I know that. What I'm trying to say is that they tried remaking the prototype tracks, and they sound worse in Origins than in the leaked ROM. It's like they used different instruments or something. I don't know what, but they definitely don't sound like Genesis music anymore. Carnival Night sounds more depressed in Origins than the prototype track as well, for example.
@cullbear55 the versions of the tracks used in origins were already created during Sonic 3's development, SEGA just used those versions instead of the one's from the leaked prototype, they didn't change anything, they used already existing versions of the tracks, that were what the Sonic and Knuckles collection versions were based off of
@@Retrblu First of all it's incredibly stupid for Sega to use earlier prototype music, instead of the more finished ones from the prototype that is completely publicly accessible. Second of all, I can almost guarantee that if we ever get the prototype that Sega is pulling these tracks from, that they are going to sound better than what we got here in Origins. In fact, I'd argue the PC Sonic & Knuckles Collection versions of these tracks sound better than the ones in Origins.
The biggest thing I think you didn’t touch on was the games that allows you to play Sonic 3 + Knuckles specifically. So many complications didn’t allow that, or didn’t even have 3 at all, which is a lot of people’s favorites. The Mega Collections and the DS ones were the only ways for a long time if you didn’t have a PC (steam version was OK and made better with fan mods)
Yeah, I suppose it was like that for a long time for collections! There was Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles available separately for the Xbox 360 marketplace and Wii Virtual Console outside of Mega Collection and Classic Collection at the time. Don't know if they were also on PS3 Store but Sonic 1 and Sonic 2.
I remember being really sad I couldn’t play sonic 3 and knuckles as a complete game but then losing my mind when I figured out you actually could on the ds collection. Made it worth it for that reason alone
Sonic mega collection plus has to be the best (in my opinion) Back then it was $20 for more then 7 games, Archie comics, the music is great, and trailer to new Sonic games at the time. Played this so much on the ps2
I really wish origins did more for its extras game gear is fine and i like the art and videos but some IDW comics included wouldve been awesome its crazy how many archie comic were fully readable on mega collection
20:57 Fun fact: from what i can remember from when i played this as a kid. Whenever you'd pick up the speed shoes in sonic 2 (and i think 1,3&k aswell) the music woulld just pitch up instead of actually speeding up like its meant to
FUN FACT Sonic CD was going to have a level in sonic generations. Wacky Workbench was planned but they cut it so that there would be three levels per era, they considered having it be dlc before they decided against that too.
Sonic Mega Collection on Gamecube made me the Sonic Fan I am today, love the presentation, the Gallery Theme where you view the character profiles, manuals, and trailers, still resonates with me to this day, it was weird how you had to keep playing some games a certain number of times to unlock the other hidden games.
I was actually kinda dissapointed that Shadow Generations didnt have the weird slip cover with Geralds journal being the book instead of an artbook. They made it tiny enough to fit in the Switch case.
I feel like the Scott the Woz channel and Scott’s Stash kind of have their own feels. Scott the Woz is a funny channel where he talks about games, it’s funny and over the top. Scott’s Stash feels like something I could watch while drinking tea, it’s chill, occasional jokes and such and an all around good chill time.
Remember when they could use the Modern Characters on the Boxart and all Merchandise before the Classic and Modern split? They would definitely not do that today and to be honest it's something I kinda miss about the 2000s Era of Sonic, this specific point in time for Sonic. Not only did the Mega Collection have the modern branding in the classic games it also featured the comics quite prominently, and when you jump into Sonic Adventure DX that game had some Sonic X stuff injected in too. It really felt like the brand as a whole was a lot more unified, if you liked Sonic you liked all of Sonic.
I've always viewed Sonic Gems as the Sonic & Knuckles of the 2 Gamecube collections. It always felt like both collections were at some point meant to be 1 big one, but in development, had to get cut in half for whatever reason.
The presentation in both Mega Collection and Gems Collection are designed to be “nostalgic” on purpose, even back in the day. The compilations are going for a historical archive feel, especially in Mega Collection Plus and Gems Collection. I personally like this archival aesthetic more than the typical Sonic aesthetic seen in Origins. As for Origins, it’s not a terrible port if you don’t own a PC or care to play the native fan remasters of the classic games. It has some questionable creative choices, especially with game customization, but it’s still a standard Sonic collection for people that just want to sit down and play the classics on their modern consoles or even PC if they don’t care about Team Forever’s fan port or S3 AIR
Playing sonic collection on ds was how i played all the original games (except knuckles as i did play that at a friend's on the Genesis). Absolutely love that collection. Playing those games on the go and being able to play as Knuckles in 2 and 3 was awesome.
Classics Collection on DS was definitely my jam growing up. A Sonic jam if you will. These days I no longer have the game but Origins Plus is definitely good enough for me.
The SEGA Genesis Classics (PS4 version) actually came first on PC, and branded itself as a VR title, hence the presentation. They also tried to do some weird Steam Workshop stuff with it, it was a very odd time for SEGA on PC.
I only have Sonic Mega Collection Plus, through a pack-in collection with Adventure DX, Riders and Heroes for PC. That is still my prized possession related to the Sonic series, because I'm pretty sure it was an Australian exclusive for a time.
_Sonic PC Collection,_ right? Shit takes me back... And yeah, it was released exclusively in Australia and New Zealand. Literally nowhere else got it, which was amusing to find out when I was older.
37:20 Sonic Origins Plus already happened, and Amy became playable in all of the compilation's games save for the Game Gear titles. Also, some Game Gear titles got thrown in as a bonus. Sure hacks like Amy in Sonic 1, Sonic 2 Pink Edition, and Sonic 3 Cz exist, but I think Sonic Origins Plus is easier for Sonic fans that want to play CD and the original trilogy as Amy.
In Sonic Gems collection's defense, it does have a robust set of unlockables via the museum, which includes the final level of a ton of games for you to play. Which is mega weird how they flat out emulate those games in a save state but don't let you play them outright without cheat codes.
One thing not mentioned about Classic Collection on the DS... While yes, there is screen crunch having to squeeze the original resolution to match the DS', the start button couldn't do anything, you NEEDED to press the touch screen in order to pause the game. You also couldn't input the classic cheat codes with that in mind too. The main standout for this collection was the ability to play the Genesis games on your DS... then the 3DS remasters came out for the first two games, leaving you with only 3 & Knuckles being the only way to play that game on the go... unless you decided to hack your 3DS of course. It's still perfectly playable if you can adapt to using the screen crunch, the touch screen to pause, and don't have any intention of using any cheat codes. Supposedly (and controversially at the time), it was revealed the game pack had an emulator playing these games as roms. 26:00 - As for THIS Collection... the PC version on Steam actually had Sonic 3 & Knuckles along with more games and you could also further add even more games to it using actual roms, this includes romhacks... However, that's just the Steam version, I have this on Switch as well and... there's quite an annoying input lag (about 1 whole second) that keeps me from playing this as much.
Fun fact: the Genesis emulator inside the 2001 Sega Smash Pack for Dreamcast gained popularity with homebrew groups where it became major point of investigation under Operation Fastlink, a 2007 FBI undercover bust of over 100 individuals distributing pirated software.
Does he not know that Sonic 3 and Knuckles were on the Steam version of Sega Genesis and Mega Drive Collection? They were removed for the console versions for some reason.
I knew they were going to cheap out on trying to get the rights, and I was prepared to swallow that, but the fact they basically kept it a secret up until the last minute....yeah. I am a huge classic Sonic fan, and I refused to buy the Origins collection basically because they couldn't be arsed to be truthful up front.
I grew up with Sonic Classic Collection on the DS and it has problems. For one you can't use the sound test/ stage select room and debug mode in normal Sonic 2 because the title screen was deliberately changed not to include the options on the title screen (selecting whether you wanted to play as Sonic or Tails was changed to be something you do on the title screen instead of the options menu, also the title screen was probably changed to remove the multiplayer mode), but you can in Knuckles in Sonic 2 using a cheat code on the title screen. Emulation wise it's obvious that part of the screen is cutoff, especially with the light blue chaos emerald in the opening of Sonic 3. Loading a save file only loads at the beginning of the stage rather than the spot you saved at. Also when loading your save the special stages in Sonic 1 and 2 would not let you retry them if you failed them even if you load a save from before you failed them. The special stages in Sonic 2 and 3 had low frame rates that made them way harder. I will say it was cool having the knuckles lock on features included in Classic Collection because it wasn't included with Sonic's Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection. Despite growing up with Classic Collection, it's difficult to go back to.
Easily the best part of these side channels for popular RUclipsrs, for them to produce quick & dirty videos that are more stream of conscious than their regular output, which requires a considerable degree of planning & execution, is how you get to discover how they truly think about things and thus are truly vapid they are.
Sonic Classic Collection DS was what brought me into sonic as a whole growing up. Picked it off the shelf with my dad at a Blockbuster before it went under, even with the lackluster presentation I do feel it held its purpose for the DS era
I believe sonic gems collection had more games in Japan as well just like in mega collection. I also believe Knuckles chaotix and Sega sonic ( maybe just 1 I might be miss remembering ) were planned for gems collection but I think they lost the code for 1 and the other they couldn't figure out how to get the track ball controls to work on a controller.
Mentioning that the emulation seems worse in Mega Collection Plus reminded me; that game had a PC version, which did have an NTSC release, but it uses PAL roms regardless of region (and also has incorrect sound emulation; the most obvious tells for that are Tails's whirring sound and the jump sound). Did the console releases also use PAL roms?
Sega Genesis classics collection on switch and ps4 is a neutered version of the pc version, which has (had) a few more games available for it, and workshop support with which you can add mods to those games from the community (or even do it from outside the workshop, with just a little fiddling with files). The Ken Sugimori (pokemon artist) art for the 3ds collection is a pretty neat bonus. Just that it exists, more than a reason to get that release.
I know Scott doesn't really use mods, but on PC there's a mod for Origins called Ultrafix, that fixes all of its little issues, (including giving the Sonic 3 prototype tracks a brand-new coat of paint,) making it in my opinion the definitive way to play most of these games.
can't believe Sega 6-pak wasn't included in this discussion /lh (it only has the original Sonic The Hedgehog and thus wasn't eligible for discussion in this video)
It's a weird feeling, I guess I'd call it "incomplete shared nostalgia" where I grew up with the Mega Collection Plus on PS2, but most people grew up with regular Mega Collection on GameCube. Another one would be having LEGO Star Wars 1 and 2 seperate, whilst everyone else had the Complete Saga. It's like 90% the same expirence, but that little bit of difference has an odd feeling that I can't really describe.

The proto type Sonic 3 music used in origins was already composed during Sonic 3's development, the only newly composed track was the super theme
@@Retrblu
I know that.
"Except for you" proceeds to showcase one of the most saught after dreamcast game.
Sonic mega collection plus has to be the best (in my opinion)
Back then it was $20 for more then 7 games, Archie comics, the music is great, and trailer to new Sonic games at the time.
And then Casino Night zone was added instead due to the SEGA contract with Sonic Team where EVERY game has to have some sort of slot machine.
That's interesting! Where have you found this information?
which adds to my peeve that the only DLC in Sonic x Shadow Gens is going to be the Shibuya stage
Thank you Scott for another video talking about something so specific yet interesting to listen
Fun fact: the box art for the sega 3d classics collections were done by Ken Sugimori, one of the main artists for the Pokémon series
Cool to see Scott’s adding extra content to these videos sometimes. It’s just like the extras in Sonic collections!
I enjoy Sonic Jam on Saturn via the Saroo ODE. Though I don't own a physical copy like you do, which is still an amazing feat by the way.
Two Scott’s Stash videos in one day!? Thank you!!!
I see Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, my day automatically gets better. Thank you Scott
I've always viewed Sonic Gems as the Sonic & Knuckles of the 2 Gamecube collections.
It always felt like both collections were at some point meant to be 1 big one, but in development, had to get cut in half for whatever reason.
Kinda true. Gems Collection was done so they could re-release CD, and then also took the opportunity to port Sonic R and Sonic The Fighters.
0:11 this struggle is real lol
It amazes me how Scott can just pump content day after day talking about video games
There's something so nostalgic and comfy about Sonic, I'm so happy this is 53 minutes long.
36:09 YOU FOOL THERES A SECRET BEHIND THAT WALL AAAAAA
The R in Sonic R stands for Racing
I love that I immediately knew exactly what Scott was gonna bitch about with Origins Plus physical release.
Playing sonic collection on ds was how i played all the original games (except knuckles as i did play that at a friend's on the Genesis). Absolutely love that collection. Playing those games on the go and being able to play as Knuckles in 2 and 3 was awesome.
4:35 oh hey Scott's talking about that game doesn't exist
Classics Collection on DS was definitely my jam growing up. A Sonic jam if you will.
These days I no longer have the game but Origins Plus is definitely good enough for me.
Very cool and appropriate using Hard Times as background music on a video about the merits of older Sonic compilations.
I understood that reference.
15:02 Insert Scott owning Sonic Jam joke here
Bro is never gonna shake the “guy who owns sonic jam” allegations
Sonic compilations are so fun!
Nice Sonic The Hedgehog "Sonic Collection" collection Scott
In Sonic Gems collection's defense, it does have a robust set of unlockables via the museum, which includes the final level of a ton of games for you to play. Which is mega weird how they flat out emulate those games in a save state but don't let you play them outright without cheat codes.
OMG, the Smash Pack unlocked a core memory of Sega Swirl. I also believed that was the first time I've played Shining Force
Ended up in the hospital... Took a shot every time he said nostalgia.
Sonic Mega Collection is my childhood ❤. The extras menu theme is what got me into gaming music.
Does he not know that Sonic 3 and Knuckles were on the Steam version of Sega Genesis and Mega Drive Collection? They were removed for the console versions for some reason.
12:36 The voice quality difference
Thanks for sobering me up Scott. I drank too much and decided to watch you. I missed you and knew you would make me closer to sober. What a guy❤️.
Mega Collection, PS3/PS4 Genesis Collection, and Origins are my favorite
Hey it’s the guy who owns sonic jam!
HE OWNS SONIC JAM
The music issue in Sonic 3 is a huge deal for me. I really loved those tracks.
Gotta love that Scott has to say trading cards because he (Seemingly) considers mentioning G4 taboo.
13:18 Want Tuah 🗿🍷
Oh nice! A new video from the guy who owns Sonic Jam!
Sonic Classic Collection DS was what brought me into sonic as a whole growing up. Picked it off the shelf with my dad at a Blockbuster before it went under, even with the lackluster presentation I do feel it held its purpose for the DS era
I really wish we got a full 3D sonic game on the Sega Saturn just because I love that look
That’s for you. Poorly managing their archives since the 2000s
Never before has a topic touched my heart so much
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine was my childhood 😭 im glad it always wormed its way into random collections
"Oh boy! Scott gets to talk about Sonic Mega Collection again!"
-Somebody, maybe
Sega Genesis classics collection on switch and ps4 is a neutered version of the pc version, which has (had) a few more games available for it, and workshop support with which you can add mods to those games from the community (or even do it from outside the workshop, with just a little fiddling with files).
The Ken Sugimori (pokemon artist) art for the 3ds collection is a pretty neat bonus. Just that it exists, more than a reason to get that release.
babe wake up, scott released another sonic compilation video
Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube was partially my introduction to the series so I will always cherish that one since I didn't grow up with a Genesis.
Perfect timing for this video I’ve been replaying some sonic games lately since generations X shadow came out
I know Scott doesn't really use mods, but on PC there's a mod for Origins called Ultrafix, that fixes all of its little issues, (including giving the Sonic 3 prototype tracks a brand-new coat of paint,) making it in my opinion the definitive way to play most of these games.
can't believe Sega 6-pak wasn't included in this discussion /lh (it only has the original Sonic The Hedgehog and thus wasn't eligible for discussion in this video)
My favorite Scott's Stash calling card is not realizing the video has ended
It's a weird feeling, I guess I'd call it "incomplete shared nostalgia" where I grew up with the Mega Collection Plus on PS2, but most people grew up with regular Mega Collection on GameCube. Another one would be having LEGO Star Wars 1 and 2 seperate, whilst everyone else had the Complete Saga. It's like 90% the same expirence, but that little bit of difference has an odd feeling that I can't really describe.
this makes my sonic mega collection for the GameCube love feel very validated. thanks scott
Two Scott's stash uploads, both nearly an hour, in 1 NIGHT? My evening is set.
I can’t believe scott’s own video got the sonic origins plus treatment
The presentation of Mega Collection is supposed to evocative of the box art for the genesis games in Japan
