9:32 That is because by default, the screen lowers the refresh rate to 60 hz when unplugged to save battery life and reverses this when plugged back in. I personally think this is a good trade off, but you can disable it if you don't like it.

I just purchased the smaller version of this, the Zenbook 14 Pro (UX6404) and agree with sentiments both bad and good. I don't use the dial at all, USB-C and Thunderbolt are limited to 100w which is a bummer considering Thunderbolt 4 is potentially capable of 240w, and you need to go into Asus' app to dim the screen below a threshold if you don't want PWM. I also did a clean install of Windows 11 Pro to get rid of the Adobe/Glide X/bloatware and get some Pro features. Having said this I freaking love this little laptop. Very snappy, takes a lot to get the fans going in my use cases, nice and light/compact, it only costs $1,800 for an i9-13000H/4060 and on my model the RAM and storage are upgradable so I purchased a 32GB SO-DIMM for $40 vs Apple's $400. Perfect for dual-4K monitor setup at the desk or working remote.

I just looked into this laptop because it does offer some things I am interested in. But for our Canadian market this thing, with slightly different configuration (1Tb SSD), starts at CAD $4500, so it is definitely more expensive than my M2 MAX with similar specifications, and that is before another whopping 13% of taxes, which makes this CAD $5k price range, which is insane for a laptop.

Thanks for the balanced review Josh. I have several ASUS devices and in general they've been trouble free, but sometimes the innovations can be a nuisance. I've got a ZenBook S15 that uses the trackpad as a second screen, and in my experience the novelty wore off quickly so I turned it off. However, we've been using it for over 4 years (it's my wife's laptop now) and it has been completely reliable.

Nice review. The airport issue and turning dial would annoy me too much to get this laptop. However, I can see a lot of PC gamers would like it due to Nvidia RTX 4080 GPU and the 120hz refresh rate.

I looked into this a few weeks ago. I could be wrong. I dont remember the name of the chips but the chip its using isnt the type of chip you would need to get the full performance out the 4080. It would perform more like a 4060. I remember i looked up Geekbench scores and cinebench and it performed worse than a 4070. gaming laptop. So im pretty sure the 4080 is just marketing. I wish it could perform like a 4080 laptop. If it could i would get it.

The dial's location is great - I feel you picked on that due to a bias you already have regarding the need for a dial.
Asus seriously missed a trick with their selection of creator laptops; the StudioBook should've at least had an option for a 4080 gpu, while the ZenBook-with a 4080-needs a max ram of 64GB (not soldered).
Otherwise, good review overall. Keep it up 👍🏽

Great review!! Would love to see a few game/graphics benchmarks but I get it’s a creator-focused machine. Also, people don’t understand the upfront cost it takes to purchase your own devices to review, so I think these types of disclosed yet still critical reviews are amazing. It allows for more information to be out there that may not have been otherwise, and more growth (and less debt) for you. Good stuff!

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech Год назад +1

Also to the people complaining about the price of this thing, he’s very obviously comparing to the price of similar spec machines, which are all higher or have worse features. This thing has a nearly-full wattage 4080 in it at 160w!! That’s 70 more watts than they originally advertised. And more than Asus’ actual gaming-focused Zephyrus M16. And it’s $100 cheaper! With an OLED panel too. That’s just insane. Definitely waiting for that buy link cause I might have to pick this thing up!

I'm still waiting for it to come in, but after 25+ hours of research on every angle regarding laptops for creators and gaming, they seem to be the best by far. I can't be bothered with Asus' awful website, and their inability to stock retailers, or even their own website. Honestly, just go take a look and see if that's someone you want to purchase from vs Lenovo, etc. Asus' details are so mixed up and conflicting (click on notify me, or where to buy), the information they give is a mess for me personally and doesn't clearly explain when or where to get their hardware. Awesome review as always. This laptop seems okay and all, but the biggest problem with Asus is their atrocious website, details, and their stocking methods. Whatever they are doing, they are trying their absolute hardest to not stock these things properly with the above specs mentioned regardless of when it is available, and the details, verbiage etc. is always a mixed bag, correct in some areas of the website, wrong/dated in other areas. Everywhere you look you find the newer or the older version with mixed information, even the rarely stocked retailers. Basically, I wouldn't purchase from Asus, ever, because they can't even get their website or details correct/clear. They are a giant mess and it doesn't instill confidence in their business practices or quality. I think I'll stick with the Lenovo Legion series for the foreseeable future.

Great review! Very fair and balanced. I've used last year's model and build quality is amazing, except that when closing, the keyboard hinges would visibly and audibly "pop" into place. Hopefully that issue has been fixed. Does the screen have the "screen door effect" that many OLED touchscreens have when viewing white or light backgrounds? **SOME NOTES: The $2599 model listed on the Asus website is actually the UX7602VI-DS96T with RTX 4070 and i9-13900h. The model with the RTX 4080 and custom i9-13905h is rumored to debut soon with a price tag of roughly $3400. As for the screen turning off when unplugged, that is said to be from switching from 120 Hz to 60 Hz refresh rate to save battery. The Asus ROG M16 exhibits the same behavior. Thank you

It appears Asus is having issues getting this particular model to market. Announced in January, sites are saying expected release in November (delayed from September ETA). Unless this is currently available through limited channels it may be dead on arrival if or when it does. With 14th Gen models and newer GPUs on the horizon, this is a major letdown. The RTX 4070 model is available in the $2600 range but lacks the Supernova SoM and faster RAM.

In your Windows laptop reviews that include devices with 4050 or 4060 dedicated gpus you should be using Davinci Resolve in your reviews. Davinci takes advantage of the Nvidia hardware.
If it wasn't for the dedicated Nvidia cards I'd recommend Macbooks every time...but ...well...there are devices with dedicated GPUs that perform better than Apple silicon...and not just for gaming. Another great and comprehensive review. It's just a shame the pricing in USD doesn't translate outside of the US. It's only configuration goes for $4,500 in Canada, making it a near impossible buy for most, despite the high level of performance.

I think there’s nothing wrong with doing a sponsored look at a laptop and appreciate the fact that you give such a strong disclaimer, however I feel that calling it a “review” is toeing the line and would rather you call it something like “overview” instead.

Besides only 1920x1200 models of the Zbook Studio are available in NZ. I think these machines are better value.

I'm just wondering if you have a spare laptop or if any of you here reading my comment have one, it doesn't need to have any high specs as long as its working it's fine. Sorry for the trouble I'm just doing whatever I can to survive. Thanks a lot.

Definitely playable on medium settings 1920 by 1080 60 fps solid. You can go a bit higher than that but its not overly reliable. It runs much better on an AMD or Mac integrated GPU

The screen flashing black when unplugged is it switching the refresh rate to 60 Hz to save battery. You can disable this behavior in the Asus control software.

Apple and Dell are truly out of their damn minds with pricing. I'm glad asus isn't pricing this like they do. The circle pad thing is niche at best, will have me selecting a different laptop because I don't want to look at it every day at worst. The keyboard layout needs to be completely reworked to make more sense. On a 16" laptop that is inexcusable. I'm not saying it needs a real numpad, just give me closer to TKL plz.

I have no idea why you are complaining about Apple and Dell when this ASUS machine in the UK is £3500 for an i9/4070/1TB/32GB? ASUS are not exactly cheap either, a sign of the times. I can get an M2 Pro MB Pro 16 with 32GB for less! The 16GB is £1000 less than the ASUS!!!

With a 4080 and a worse binned chip it's a bad deal (for 150 euros more in germany than the scar).
