Going the Distance, Part 2: "Barstool Warrior"
In this second installment of our recent sit-down with the Dream Theater axman to discuss his five favorite riffs from his band's latest album, 'Distance Over Time,' JP discusses the inception and conceptual and technical approaches he and his bandmates took in writing and arranging "Barstool Warrior."
It's hard not to like John. Such kind, warm, focused and talented person... yet very humble.
Totally agree!!
Best video intro I’ve seen from Guitar World 😂😂😂😂👍
Petrucciator?
Petruccinator sounds better
I was never a huge fan of this song, but after this intro...I'm now a barstool warrior convert hahahaha
I tell you what, Paul has always caught all kinds of heat and snickers over the years because of either his hair cut styles, clothes or his delivery on his videos, (I’ve even made stupid little comments on occasion) but the reality is that he’s a pretty cool dude! He knows what questions to ask and how to keep an interview moving forward and keep it interesting. You can tell John is really reacting and interacting with him very comfortably. That’s the sign of a good interviewer. Keep up the excellent work Mr. Riario!
Indeed!
DAVID BAKER LMAO!! Yeah, me too.
I could listen to John analysing his riffs even if he played folk reggae.......
Or country western hip hop!
LOL! Same here!
like Papa Het talking about bees for an hour ruclips.net/video/5O6QPTawR14/видео.html
I could listen to him even if he played silence.
The first song on the new CD that brought tears with the level of feeling
Yessss the rooster is back with jesus
PUPPER_EMERITUS rooster boy
JP somehow keeps getting better and better. Nobody in the world comes close to him. Amazing man.
Agreed, although I saw Malmsteen live for the first time not too long ago and having not really gotten into any of his stuff past the mid nineties, I'll tell you something,: that dude hasn't been just cruising on his plateau either. It's amazing how guys like Petrucci or Malmsteen can reach such an unprecedented level of ability and even after decades just keep getting better and better.
Lucky john's such a nice and friendly guy. Otherwise he woulda look scary as hell if he's grumpy and broody 🤣
This was a really good interview, on both parts. I’m surprised at how well Petrucci performed. Adds a whole new level of appreciation for the guy.
He's just a genuine dude, I think it is so apparent in every aspect of his demeanor. Good thing too, because he could just change the temperature of the sun on us at any moment.
You're surprised on how well JP can play? What?! Lmao.
@@davidepannone6021 I'm surprised at how polite, well-spoken and and at ease he was during the interview. There were a couple of times he went back to a question posed by his interviewer (that he himself let go of) to then move on to what came afterwards. Being interviewed in itself is a skill to be developed, and he has it.
I'm obviously not talking about his playing, duh! The comment section on YT is really something...
@@shinjial Jp has always been a class act in any interview i have ever seen of him. Again, what are you talking about? Lol.
@@davidepannone6021 Do you get paid to be this annoying? If not, you're missing out. I guess it's a valid career choice for a troll like you. Don't know what else you'd be able to do.
9 years into guitar theory and I still know nothing about shit when I see a guitar legend breakdown what they play, I think that's what makes musician specials, be yourself with music. Mesmerized ..
Great questions and answers!
So awesome! See you at the tower theater in PA!
It's funny that JP is teaching Paul with basic notions like mixolydian or 7/8 time signature, notions I bet he knows very well. Obviously JP is talking to us, but Paul reacts and nods like he's learning :D
I bet it's fun.. to know big words lol
For simple.. common sence for guitarist
Paul needs to stop standing behind a fighter jet to dry his hair
He looks like little bird that just borned

Sorry if I spelled wrong lol
My two all time favorite guitarists next to each other in one video. One's just a poster though. :/
Hi from the UK. Don't know if you guys have heard lately, but we're going through something weird called Brexshit. So, it's really nice when musicians like JP, among others, give British artists (genesis/Peter Gabriel etc) a mention as influences on their playing. Sorry if that sounds a bit needy, but times are strange here.
glenn whitlock but is Trump the top politician in your country? 🤣 that’s some strange times for us
@@jaimeecherivel2927 yep, as soon as I wrote the comment I realised that a whole lot of countries are going through some very strange stuff right now and some, even worse. JP for president!! (Or indeed, Prime Minister, if he's up for it).
I am coming to the Dream Theater concert in Athens and I play guitar so it would be really good talking to you.You are a huge inspiration for me.
Even a non metal music listener will enjoy hearing john petrucci talk..so cool, kind ..
... Mr. Petrucci I don't listen Ur Guitar ... My Soul Feel Ur Guitar ... 🖤🖤🖤
Marry me Candy...
Very good video! Thanks!
Please tell me there is a part in which you talk about "At Wit's End" riff?! These videos are awesome!
I'm hoping he talks about the ending riff of S2N. As kickass as it is, it isn't complicated, just has some weird counts every other time, but Mangini and Myung have to be right there with each one, and I'm interested in knowing how they work it all out in the writing process.
Finally, I’ve been waiting for this for a while
kinda sounds like a Rush riff
john is like john wick of guitar. . . such a legend yet so humble
At last!!🔥🔥
I freaking love this! Can't wait for more. Keep it coming.
I got one of those too...on my forearm
There's also a "Nicholas" on top and a "Victoria" on the bottom. DT forever.
Immediately after I heard Barstool Warrior for the very first time Marillion's Clutching at Straws album came to mind...
Awesome interview!
John is awesome!!!
That intro was so random.
Not really..
You can really tell how
John is distracted..
By the thought
That he would rather set dudes hair on fire than look at it..
Great interview & breakdown!
2:30 - " first of all its in odd time, pretty much the whole time - DT in a nutshell.
Not gonna lie, clicked just to laugh my ass with the previewed intro XDD *petruccinator*
jesus petrucci
Praised be
that enchanted forest majesty sure is nice
We care John, we care!
🤣🤣🤣 yes, that opening is a win...
How rarely he palm mutes in that lick is very impressive, it's much easier to be clean if you're laying it on heavy with the palm mutes for a riff like that.
I love that green guitar. I want it. Lol
Wow, In the intro I thought Paul pissed him off and was going to get his head lopped with that guitar
I hope you guys did a video on At Wit's End riff. That shit is smokin!
velocity (or speed) = distance over time
for example miles per hour
im a genius
Such a great video. From the first time I listened to this album I was struck by how great and clever the harmonic progressions were. Those guys really found the perfect balance between complexity and musicality, which is a hard thing to do; you can always make things crazy complex to the point you can't even enjoy them.
JP the Master..
Didn't know that the singer of Karnivool does some jobs for Guitar World. :o)
Fucking great detailed video gents
Did somebody get their head dunked in the toilet???...🤣🤣🤣...Just kidding!!!...That’s one funky dew!!!...
Woody the Woodpecker
Um, it's " 'do ", as in hairdo. "Dew" what's on the grass in the morning.
fretbuzz59
Do the dew...dew the doooo...🤣🤣🤣
@Nickhead87 That hair do look bad.

I heard Paul is a direct descendant of Woody Woodpecker.
Lol
That intro video.. :D
Hey guys please, could you tell us what equipment was used to record him there? What mic?cab? Overdrive pedal? thanks
the beginning of the video starts off like BrBr Deng
John literally interviewed himself here
Does anyone know if he is using his Mesa or the axe fx in this video?
"Seems like this riff is more complicated than this guy's life" 😂😂
I hate everytime John says a riff is easy. I spend all this time learning, thinking its pretty easy, thinking maybe im good at guitar. But noooo, he gotta say its easy and make me feel less special about it😤😤 lol, I kid. Love you papa petrucci😍
Jacob's Xanadu.
It's rare to see John talking about the theory behind his writing. He always seems to me that he tries to avoid that part just to get to a broader audience... Don't know.
I now have this hairdo. girls walk away from me but IDC
Great interviewer tho
doi, um tapinha nao, doi um tapinha nao doi
The thumbs down are from Dubstep and rap fans (in other words, not music)
It’s as if God let you peek inside his workshop!
Tom Segura really grew his hair out.
I thought it was kim thayil 😔
🐓
I thought that, by the time this second part would be released, i’d already gotten over this dude’s hair. But no...
Looks like he have feathers on the back of his head
Is that a chicken man?
is paul a k-pop fan? cmon dude
How does paul lack enough self awareness to be able to do that to his hair and then go subject people to it
He looks like plumber's apprentice from the forehead down who got swirlied by his Master Plumber employer
So Guitar World is officially making fun of their coworker's hairstyle??
I guess I'd be slightly insulted if I was him...
It's all fun and games, I sure could use more of that attitude in my life. I rage all the time and I think I shouldn't, it isn't good for you. Hairstyles change all the time, I bet somebody thinks I look ridiculous too. Take care m8.
Please! either turn up your speaking volume or turn down the music volume! My wife is about to KILL ME!

-Wow, LMFAO that's impossible!
Shut up Noooob, remember I can time warp!
Paul has gotta have the most unfortunate hairstyle I've ever seen in my life. shave that, geez
Awesome interview!!
