The biggest takeaway from this series is all those little things that make it sound "right." Be it a muted note here and there or that hint of vibrato, those little details can make all the difference. Nice to hear someone with the god status of JP break it down to that level.
I attended a clinic that Petrucci did and he has a way of making what he does seem stupid easy; and without a trace of false humility, he literally presents it that way. Calls it "cheating" or "tricks." The dude genuinely doesn't think that what he does is really all that impressive, and I really do believe he's embarrassed by the ardor that his playing receives. And yet; he's too humble even to make a point about that because it would call attention to the fact that he's considered to be a guitar god. One of the nicest, most down to earth dudes there is, and I mean that. Answered one of my dumbass questions with absolute sincerity (actually almost exactly the question he was asked in this interview about counting time vs feeling it; I asked about Dance of Eternity. He gave pretty much the same answer). It makes you love what he does even more.
At 9:00 John says it took him a while to get that 5 feel. To me that would mean 2 months of practicing an hour a day. For John that means long enough for the ice cream to start a trickle down the side of the cone.
A Bugera G5 played at "bedroom levels" doesn't quite do it. I wonder how a boogie and boogie cabinet would sound at that low a volume... Anyone have any idea? I recently discovered gain stacking, which does help. In my case, a TC MojoMojo in front of the overdrive channel of the amp set to moderate gain, with the overdrive set for a small amount of gain and the level at about 3/4 or so. It gives the preamp a nice boost without the "total overload buzz".
That guitar😍😍😍😍.... I assume it the same as the one hanging up. That's a deep cut away on the top, looks like it goes to the 24th fret. Wonder if I can convince the Mrs.
2019 Music Man Majesty - 3,200-3,500 24 frets, coil taps, 20db boost built-in, extremely accessable higher frets. It's design is made to "stay out of your way"... I've literally been debating snatching one from Sam Ash for 64$ a month for like 24-months. Such a bad ass guitar, Idk if I like the red, blue or black. Knowing me probably black but the red one really pops
I've since been looking into them on andertons website & holy cow I want one. Thats one serious guitar, I'd go for a six string in artic dream although the red really stands out. At £3299 i dont think i'll be getting one any time soon especially as I've just got two guitars within 6 months of each other. Still I can dream 😂😂
Musicians Friend had/has the 2018 Majesty Monarchy on sale for $2399 ($1000 Off) in Majestic Purple... beautiful guitar. It’s mostly the same guitar, can’t go wrong with any majesty! The sale was on last time I checked a few days ago. They also had the regular Majesty (not the Monarchy version) for $1899, down from $2899. Only in one color though - Polar Noir
Hell yeah. I was so pissed when I heard Luna Park for the first time. His tone was flooded in chorus for the whole show. I know he wanted it to sound bigger. But it just sounded airy and anything but tight
My favorite part from this song is the riff on the last chorus when Petrucci use wah pedal, that sound so great to my ear, stic in my head for an age now ..
And maybe it's for those who weren't even born in 90's? Maybe it's for people who are just learning the guitar and want to understand, how the new stuff is written? Maybe it's for those who don't even play the guitar but are interested in Dream Theater and their approach to composition? Maybe it's for people who didn't listen to Dream Theater or metal in general before?

Carat Cranker You’re right. No point in this video why did they even make it? Let’s just get rid of schools as well since they teach stuff that’s been obvious since thousands of years too!

Yup, he's the Keanu Reeves of guitarists. Absolute multifaceted excellence.

When are you going to release the next video? With Riff At Wit's End!
That beginning is the epitome of tone. I just wonder if I should sell everything I have and just buy this rig....
Do it.

@@tom434911 the solution is to get a Boss Katana or a Yamaha THR lol
This series has been the best ones I seen. And great interview too,
The middle part of this song is incredible too... Gives me chills
I think paul wants to be sonic the hedgehog .
U mean shadow the hedgehog
that's why he's talking to petrucci. Gotta go fast!
Fall into the Light's intro riff must be so much fun to play. Love it
the riff with the whipping technique is so beautifully complicated, yet musical
Love his guitar tone 😁
Thank you for you advise Jhon👍

RE : The Root Sixth chords - On My degree i found out you can imply any chord with just the 3rd and the 7th. If the bass plays the root.
now that's the sound we've been waiting for.. (no chorus)

The best song off the album...
I have a major man crush on JP and I'm not even embarrassed to admit it.
So John is a Metallica fan?!
Yeh, he said so many times before and they also covered the whole master of puppets album live :)
If you didn't know, he's massively influenced by Hetfield's riffs too. Since the very beginning. U can hear a lot of him in DT's riffs.
you must be new huh? :D
Massive Metallica fan. U kidding?
He is also a fan of, and his playing style has been inspired by, Queensryche and Iron Maiden.
I like the fact that John still raise a bar for himself with all of these challenges - right hand stuff, muting the strings etc.
That's a great example of self-development, being exemplary for others
Ya Wow
Sarcasm. .. intended
John IS THE KING
im starting to get the feeling that viper king will be out
JP is truly a guitar lord!
guitar god
Can you do this interview with Jim Matheos please?
Is that the new rooster haircut?
Waiting for S2N or Viper King playthrough or breakdown.
Viper King is an amazing song!
Amazing.,,
@3:30.
Every jam session I've ever played
Where’s part 4???
Petrucci rock😝😝😝
Give the guy comb
Rasputin can shred. 😐
The Woody-The Woodpecker hairstyle is back! 🦜
Saulo Arcoverde All you'll ever be is a bully.
Petrucci agrees 😂 😂 😂
10:17 those chords have a BM feel
BM = Basic Metabolism ?
@@dntinpalevo yes
Khaos 156 that does sound like something you’d hear from Blut Aus Nord.
What do you think will happen if we substitute John with Kirk and via versa ?
I don't see anything here that hasn't been obvious since the 90's.

As much as I love this song, that opening is almost exactly the same as Stargazer by Rainbow
БлЪ, нажевал хлеба, запорол 🤓
10:00 black metal does this all the time. Nothing new here, John
no one said this is new, he’s just talking about how he wrote the riff
Нажевал хлеба
Hetfield called, wants his riff back, same with queensryche😂 signature jp..little bit of borrowing from both awesome bands
Paul has no idea what John is doing LOL
With all due respect he talks way too damn much.
Great player, great riff, ugly guitar.
MM jp6 is better.
I like the 2018 Majesty better.
You're fucking higher than a kite. That guitar is beautiful.
Does anyone else find Petrucci and his playstyle really obnoxious?
Rob Tol'vir no.
nope
Bandana is too tight bro...
Skepz considering I responded to your ignorance with ignorance of my own. All is forgiven.
Skepz I do really miss that bandanna though.
