The pasta and ice cream analogy was spot on when it comes to mixing exercises. I see a lot of this in group classes like CrossFit. I often think to myself, wouldn’t these people get better gains if they did cardio and lifting separately…
Maybe, depends on what gains you're talking about. Try training those muscles separately and see if you can build the same endurance as with an exercise that involves both of those muscles at the same time.

@@jimbojimson no I run city routes, home daily. I work out 3-4 times a week right now, cut back from 5 which was pushing it too hard. It’s all hand truck deliveries, lots of physicality to the job. I could do 5-6 days when I was younger but I’ve had ankle surgery, spinal surgery, shoulder and knee issues so I’ve adjusted my training regiment according to what my body’s been telling me. It’s not easy but I love the job and the gym equally
20 years in the Air Force within personnel protection and special tactics, and retired with spinal stenosis and severe L3 damage from gear, n convoys, and aircraft… the recovery process has been a journey. I really appreciated you mentioning how important it is to take it slow when rehabbing pain. I have been dealing with knee pain due to the knee cap not tracking properly. I did PT for 2 years and made great progress. But I had to scale way back in the gym. My squat is only at 95 lbs now, but it's full ROM and my knee feels good. Sometimes, it's easy to get in my head that I'm lifting so light, so it's nice to hear that I'll most likely be successful long term going slow. Thank you!
The use of the towels in the high row is to change the angle of the grip to a flexible hammer grip, which decreases the internal rotation at the top of the motion. It's actually a pretty good technique as you lose none of the weight and it allows your grip to expand naturally as you reach the top of the pull instead of being locked into a bar. It is effectively like doing a high row with independent cables. This is ESPECIALLY important because Kevin had some pretty serious back injuries and is probably avoiding internal rotation at every opportunity.
Think about what muscles you are working with this grip it just doesn’t make sense to me. A bent over row is going to do way more for your back, a press would do way more for your delts so what’s it trying to do? This movement on a machine would get way better range of motion (machine high row looks way different) but a barbell high row with normal stance just seems like an energy waste IMO
@@Th3Darkn3s a bent over row is not the same as a high row. They target different back muscles. Bent rows target the lats. High pulls target rear delts and traps. You could also do reverse flys, chest supported rows or any number of different lifts for the same effect. This is just one variation.
@@HeadCannonPrime hitting rear deals with a movement that keeps my arms in front of me is wack in my eyes, this seems not to hits traps because it’s all arm movement I feel a dedicated wide grip shrug with posture would do better. It seems to want to do too many things at once and it ends up doing none of them. It’s like not quite an athletic movement like those snatch and cleans and stuff but neither an effective hypertrophy movement either

Nice one Mike! Far from the worst one we've seen. A question for you (and the general comments section). We all know that, from a training perspective, the best way to get more jacked is through a solid, predictable resistance training protocol that uses a good mix of big compounds and targeted isolation lifts to grow the desired areas. There can be some trial and error and some tweaking for sure, but the goal is to find a series of movements across the whole body that agree with the trainees anatomy and focus on beating the books in terms of plus ones (more reps, sets, load etc) each time a movement is done, and the focus needs to be months rather than days before we reevaluate. Cool. The thing is, I think that we, the dweeby gym bros, fail to realise that this is dull as dishwater to most people. As in, the vast, VAST majority of people. Most people I talk to that lift (my friend group, work colleagues etc, not other meatheadsin the gym) don't do the predictable routine discussed earlier, rather they do classes of circuit training, what I would call "Crossfit-ish". And they love it! They love having some new random thing to challenge them each time they come into the gym, they love the social class aspect of it. With this in mind, and knowing that the celebrities you judge are more likely to fall into the "most people" camp rather than the meathead camp, should we view the training they do through a different lens? I mean, the average person in 2023 just wants to look like say the average person from 1970 so, provided diet is at least most of the way there isn't how they train fine? Basically adult jungle gym; burn some calories, have some fun, some positive reinforcement to keep active, build some muscle somewhere out of sheer coincidence etc.
I think no. First, those celebrities much times not showing average body, but rather hollywood-standart physique like Thor. As well as people who watching those videos. They want to know, how to get there. Thus watching those videos through the lense of critique is right, because it's basically direct respond and correction of information: "No, that's not how you should do it to get there." Problem is those videos saying that they are showing you how to build muscle and stay fit, while in reality they not quite. If titles and description of information were more honest like: "We show you how build muscles highy suboptimally but more funny way, if you are bored from regular more better stuff" - there would be less problems. And even if average person want to do funny stuff, they lacking information about that stuff because it's not his hobby. Thus telling them about basics can made them still do fun stuff, yet actually realize what they getting. Help them not getting tricked into nonesense information about non-existing benefits and get actual fitness situation figured out easier, more effective and for less time (if they dont like it). Also problem is that we can see a lot of regular lifting exercises which was changed to made them far less effective. Basically people still doing that boring part yet they are not getting assosiated gains from it. If you already committed to boring part - do it optimal way and get actual result from it.

10:32 People on the internet exaggerate a lot when they say "I LITERALLY spit my coffee on my entire kindergarten class" but I literally just turned my head and some went up my nose.
I usually put the dumbbells resting on my shoulders by the bar and hold on to the front of them. It's pretty uncomfortable but I never really thought about doing it differently because that's just the way I started and have always done it. This way is way better so it's nice to pick up those little tweaks that make life easier once in a while.
I actually like the rows from push-up position. Much more for the benefit of core stabilization and shoulder stabilization. I’ve had the pleasure to work out with Kevin and his trainer and he’s def goofing off in this video just for the laughs. During his real workouts he’s extremely serious and doesn’t joke around at all.
Question: While those combination exercises (Dumbbell push-ups into rows into overhead press) may be bad for optimizing muscle growth, are they that bad for improving overall health and athleticism? After all, not everyone is a bodybuilder, and since a lot of people hate cardio, this gets you _some_ muscle growh, and also hits some cardio and some coordination. Is that so bad?
It doesn't improve your athleticism like actual athletic training would (sprints, throws, whatever.) And it doesn't really do much for coordination either compared to idk animal walks or whatever movement training is out there. (Also I think coordination is really task specific, so you should just train for the sport you're trying to do to improve that type of coordination, not train coordination overall.) And I think it trains cardio worse than high rep or even low rep compounds Like I think I would be breathing heavier after a max triple squat than after that stuff.
Almost everyone is an off-season bodybuilder though 😅. You only want to invest x amount of time into growing muscle sure but you want to grow muscle? I think less people are into athleticism than building muscle and even if. I mean. Box jumps and handstands I'd get for athleticism. Dr Mike said the continental clean and press so. A deadlift followed by an overhead press is a great sigh of strength. I don't think he's entirely against combo exercises but. You are just usually asking too little or too much if one of these muscles. But example clean and press. You could warm up shoulders. Do clean n press. And that may be light as far deadlifts go for you. But then you transition into just deadlifts as now you are warm. That way I think it can make sense to combine. Or the other way around you are already tired deadlifts wise and now combine light deadlifts with heavy shoulderpress.
+ I shoulderpress 20_35 kg. I think yanking that weight up could be damaging. Pulling on joints suddenly. Especially as I'd need to go very heavy for it to make any sense given you only do a shoulderpress rep every couple seconds
Kind of. West Africans are really four separate genetic clusters (Sarah Tishkoff did studies on this in the 00's), as opposed to about one on average for Europeans and roughly two for Asians. Because Africa is the most diverse population on the planet. Additionally, only about half of US slaves came from West Africa, so the other 50% came from some combination of another 10 genetic clusters. This means we're talking about a population 4 times as genetically diverse as Europe when talking about calf sizes and 14 times as diverse when talking about the descendants of slaves generally. And this ignores that the average African-American is about 20-30% of European descent on top of that. Case in point. My dad is Nigerian and my mom is mostly West African descended. My dad and I have freakishly large calves and shoulders and fairly light frames. My half brother has skinny calves but my half sister got my dad's legs. But my stepmom's brother and his family also have huge calves (and are just huge people overall). Ultimately, the science isn't racist, but it's not actually good science as of roughly 2008. Many black Americans can build massive calves easily and many can't. There's no real metric for which is which based on where they happen to live now.

@@MrBazBakeit’s not about size though, it’s about muscle shape and insertions. Anyone can grow their calves to one degree or another, but nothing will make them longer or shorter. And obviously there’s tons of diversity, but speaking anecdotally as an American, folks of primarily European descent tend to have medium length calves, folks of African descent usually have shorter calves, and folks of East Asian descent tend to have mid-long calves. I’ve seen people of every race with every length of calves, but at least in my experience this holds true at a population level
I respect this take but not everyone wants look like a body builder. Some ppl just want to look athletic. The most athletic ppl aren't the most muscular. And their workouts usually consist of dynamic and compound movements with added explosion. Not a bunch of isolated exercises.
If you want to be athletic you really don't want to go to the gym, you want to go to the athletic shit. If you want to train for anything at the gym, you want to train "like a body builder" and practice whatever you're training for

Sometimes different exercises are just fun, and spruce up the routine. As long as they don’t hurt you, what the problem. Mental engagement is just as important to prevent burnout and quitting.

I love you Dr. Mike! I have done those "man-makers",. with my PT, along with other exercises in a crossfit/functional training day in a circuit (every week a different set of exercises). My trainer uses that day to help improve my endurance, rather than muscle building, it's without doubt the hardest workout. We spend 5 other days doing conventional muscle building, and my rest day doing Muay Thai. Do you think they have value in functional training for endurance?
@@daebibs I did reach my weight goal 2 months ago. I now only train 1-2-1 with a Muay Thai fighter for endurance. Do Yoga classes for flexibility. And weight train on my own for strength.

Serious question: as someone with poor Mobility who therefore does goblet squats, the way the trainer shows to hold the dumbbells in front of him would simulate similar loading to the goblet squat. Would you ever recommend goblet squats do any of your clients? Thank you
you can also do straight arm goblet squats by holding the head of the dumbbell down between your knees. this reduces your arm fatigue if you are using heavier weights AND keeps the center of gravity very LOW, which is very important if you have mobility issues, compression issues or erector problems.
I agree I used to try doing squats like that with holding dumbbells and a curled position and I would feel it more in my shoulders in the front and when it fatigued they will go to my bicep and it would take my mind off my legs and my glutes so I just hold it to the side or like you said on the shoulders feel so much better
i'ma be honest i don't think everyone trains for looks. Being active is good like end of story. And these exercise that are mostly cardio tend to have more benefits than weight training for the majority of the population. They just don't have good terminology in describing these exercises and what they do, but they're not bad if you want your body to be functionally moving around and shit. Getting some strength while maintaining full mobility in the joints. Good shit

I think there is some value to "sub-optimal" exercises like number one, if the main goal isn't to get as big as possible or build strength on specific lifts. Doing this kind of stuff (that, yes, does look very weird to me as well on first glance) will improve your ability to keep your balance while lifting something, to stabilize, etc. If we are talking powerlifting / bodybuilding type gains, it is certainly pretty crap compared to more effective and efficient exercises. However, as someone with a background in multiple different sports, I can appreciate benefits beyond that as a part of "being fit". The word fit obviously stemming from "capable", "able to do [?]", and originally meaning athletic in a general sense. Someone who can lift weight in a lot of wonky positions while keeping balance is probably less likely to injure himself in day-to-day life, for instance.

@@KR-jg7gc This is similar to an issue I have with the current stance most martial arts influencers take towards traditional Eastern systems and their approaches to training. The argument often goes: "If you want to learn fighting, going to a BJJ / kick-boxing gym is way better, it'll be much more effective." While I don't disagree that you'll learn HOW to fight - in a practical and instinctual sense - much quicker, that's not really the sole purpose of proper Karate / Judo / traditional Jujutsu etc. schools. They teach fight "philosophy", if you will, respecting the fight, respecting your opponent, being in proper shape to practice that martial art physically and psychologically, not just practising techniques, but really looking at specific forms outside of sparring to gain a deep understanding and the ability to consciously change/adapt them because you know how every part works, etc. TL;DR Looking at something that serves multiple purposes, and saying: "That's inefficient/ineffective, because this other thing serves one of those purposes much better." doesn't really make sense in general.

A question for you (and the general comments section). We all know that, from a training perspective, the best way to get more jacked is through a solid, predictable resistance training protocol that uses a good mix of big compounds and targeted isolation lifts to grow the desired areas. There can be some trial and error and some tweaking for sure, but the goal is to find a series of movements across the whole body that agree with the trainees anatomy and focus on beating the books in terms of plus ones (more reps, sets, load etc) each time a movement is done, and the focus needs to be months rather than days before we reevaluate. Cool.
The thing is, I think that we, the dweeby gym bros, fail to realise that this is dull as dishwater to most people. As in, the vast, VAST majority of people. Most people I talk to that lift (my friend group, work colleagues etc, not other meatheadsin the gym) don't do the predictable routine discussed earlier, rather they do classes of circuit training, what I would call "Crossfit-ish". And they love it! They love having some new random thing to challenge them each time they come into the gym, they love the social class aspect of it.
With this in mind, and knowing that the celebrities you judge are more likely to fall into the "most people" camp rather than the meathead camp, should we view the training they do through a different lens? I mean, the average person in 2023 just wants to look like say the average person from 1970 so, provided diet is at least most of the way there isn't how they train fine? Basically adult jungle gym; burn some calories, have some fun, some positive reinforcement to keep active, build some muscle somewhere out of sheer coincidence etc.

First, those celebrities much times not showing average body, but rather hollywood-standart physique like Thor. As well as people who watching those videos. They want to know, how to get there. Thus watching those videos through the lense of critique is right, because it's basically direct respond and correction of information: "No, that's not how you should do it to get there."
Problem is those videos saying that they are showing you how to build muscle and stay fit, while in reality they not quite. If titles and description of information were more honest like: "We show you how build muscles highy suboptimally but more funny way, if you are bored from regular more better stuff" - there would be less problems.
And even if average person want to do funny stuff, they lacking information about that stuff because it's not his hobby. Thus telling them about basics can made them still do fun stuff, yet actually realize what they getting. Help them not getting tricked into nonesense information about non-existing benefits and get actual fitness situation figured out easier, more effective and for less time (if they dont like it).
Also problem is that we can see a lot of regular lifting exercises which was changed to made them far less effective. Basically people still doing that boring part yet they are not getting assosiated gains from it. If you already committed to boring part - do it optimal way and get actual result from it.
Celebrities are training for looks, it’s Hollywood. So, they definitely wouldn’t fall into the category of the average gym goer.

I usually put the dumbbells resting on my shoulders by the bar and hold on to the front of them. It's pretty uncomfortable but I never really thought about doing it differently because that's just the way I started and have always done it.
This way is way better so it's nice to pick up those little tweaks that make life easier once in a while.

I’ve had the pleasure to work out with Kevin and his trainer and he’s def goofing off in this video just for the laughs. During his real workouts he’s extremely serious and doesn’t joke around at all.
Question: While those combination exercises (Dumbbell push-ups into rows into overhead press) may be bad for optimizing muscle growth, are they that bad for improving overall health and athleticism? After all, not everyone is a bodybuilder, and since a lot of people hate cardio, this gets you _some_ muscle growh, and also hits some cardio and some coordination. Is that so bad?
It doesn't improve your athleticism like actual athletic training would (sprints, throws, whatever.) And it doesn't really do much for coordination either compared to idk animal walks or whatever movement training is out there.
(Also I think coordination is really task specific, so you should just train for the sport you're trying to do to improve that type of coordination, not train coordination overall.)
And I think it trains cardio worse than high rep or even low rep compounds Like I think I would be breathing heavier after a max triple squat than after that stuff.
Almost everyone is an off-season bodybuilder though 😅. You only want to invest x amount of time into growing muscle sure but you want to grow muscle? I think less people are into athleticism than building muscle and even if. I mean. Box jumps and handstands I'd get for athleticism. Dr Mike said the continental clean and press so. A deadlift followed by an overhead press is a great sigh of strength. I don't think he's entirely against combo exercises but. You are just usually asking too little or too much if one of these muscles. But example clean and press. You could warm up shoulders. Do clean n press. And that may be light as far deadlifts go for you. But then you transition into just deadlifts as now you are warm. That way I think it can make sense to combine. Or the other way around you are already tired deadlifts wise and now combine light deadlifts with heavy shoulderpress.
+ I shoulderpress 20_35 kg. I think yanking that weight up could be damaging. Pulling on joints suddenly. Especially as I'd need to go very heavy for it to make any sense given you only do a shoulderpress rep every couple seconds

Kind of. West Africans are really four separate genetic clusters (Sarah Tishkoff did studies on this in the 00's), as opposed to about one on average for Europeans and roughly two for Asians. Because Africa is the most diverse population on the planet.
Additionally, only about half of US slaves came from West Africa, so the other 50% came from some combination of another 10 genetic clusters.
This means we're talking about a population 4 times as genetically diverse as Europe when talking about calf sizes and 14 times as diverse when talking about the descendants of slaves generally.
And this ignores that the average African-American is about 20-30% of European descent on top of that.
Case in point. My dad is Nigerian and my mom is mostly West African descended. My dad and I have freakishly large calves and shoulders and fairly light frames.
My half brother has skinny calves but my half sister got my dad's legs. But my stepmom's brother and his family also have huge calves (and are just huge people overall).
Ultimately, the science isn't racist, but it's not actually good science as of roughly 2008.
Many black Americans can build massive calves easily and many can't. There's no real metric for which is which based on where they happen to live now.

@@MrBazBakeit’s not about size though, it’s about muscle shape and insertions. Anyone can grow their calves to one degree or another, but nothing will make them longer or shorter. And obviously there’s tons of diversity, but speaking anecdotally as an American, folks of primarily European descent tend to have medium length calves, folks of African descent usually have shorter calves, and folks of East Asian descent tend to have mid-long calves. I’ve seen people of every race with every length of calves, but at least in my experience this holds true at a population level

Sometimes different exercises are just fun, and spruce up the routine. As long as they don’t hurt you, what the problem. Mental engagement is just as important to prevent burnout and quitting.

I love you Dr. Mike! I have done those "man-makers",. with my PT, along with other exercises in a crossfit/functional training day in a circuit (every week a different set of exercises). My trainer uses that day to help improve my endurance, rather than muscle building, it's without doubt the hardest workout. We spend 5 other days doing conventional muscle building, and my rest day doing Muay Thai. Do you think they have value in functional training for endurance?
why not just do more muay thai? u get better at muy thai that way and train your endurance. these are exercising for the sake of exercising
@@daebibs I did reach my weight goal 2 months ago. I now only train 1-2-1 with a Muay Thai fighter for endurance. Do Yoga classes for flexibility. And weight train on my own for strength.

Serious question: as someone with poor Mobility who therefore does goblet squats, the way the trainer shows to hold the dumbbells in front of him would simulate similar loading to the goblet squat. Would you ever recommend goblet squats do any of your clients? Thank you
you can also do straight arm goblet squats by holding the head of the dumbbell down between your knees. this reduces your arm fatigue if you are using heavier weights AND keeps the center of gravity very LOW, which is very important if you have mobility issues, compression issues or erector problems.

I agree I used to try doing squats like that with holding dumbbells and a curled position and I would feel it more in my shoulders in the front and when it fatigued they will go to my bicep and it would take my mind off my legs and my glutes so I just hold it to the side or like you said on the shoulders feel so much better

i'ma be honest i don't think everyone trains for looks. Being active is good like end of story. And these exercise that are mostly cardio tend to have more benefits than weight training for the majority of the population. They just don't have good terminology in describing these exercises and what they do, but they're not bad if you want your body to be functionally moving around and shit. Getting some strength while maintaining full mobility in the joints. Good shit

I think there is some value to "sub-optimal" exercises like number one, if the main goal isn't to get as big as possible or build strength on specific lifts. Doing this kind of stuff (that, yes, does look very weird to me as well on first glance) will improve your ability to keep your balance while lifting something, to stabilize, etc.
If we are talking powerlifting / bodybuilding type gains, it is certainly pretty crap compared to more effective and efficient exercises. However, as someone with a background in multiple different sports, I can appreciate benefits beyond that as a part of "being fit". The word fit obviously stemming from "capable", "able to do [?]", and originally meaning athletic in a general sense. Someone who can lift weight in a lot of wonky positions while keeping balance is probably less likely to injure himself in day-to-day life, for instance.

@@KR-jg7gc This is similar to an issue I have with the current stance most martial arts influencers take towards traditional Eastern systems and their approaches to training.
The argument often goes: "If you want to learn fighting, going to a BJJ / kick-boxing gym is way better, it'll be much more effective."
While I don't disagree that you'll learn HOW to fight - in a practical and instinctual sense - much quicker, that's not really the sole purpose of proper Karate / Judo / traditional Jujutsu etc. schools. They teach fight "philosophy", if you will, respecting the fight, respecting your opponent, being in proper shape to practice that martial art physically and psychologically, not just practising techniques, but really looking at specific forms outside of sparring to gain a deep understanding and the ability to consciously change/adapt them because you know how every part works, etc.
TL;DR
Looking at something that serves multiple purposes, and saying: "That's inefficient/ineffective, because this other thing serves one of those purposes much better." doesn't really make sense in general.
