  • Lithophanes is something I've wanted to try for a while, but I've never had any white filament, and I didn't have a use for one besides printing lithophanes, so I never bought any.
    But when the Snapmaker arrived, there was a roll of white PLA filament inside the box. So, what else was I to do? In this video, I walk you through how I made them.

    The default Snapmaker draft profile only needed a little bit of a tweak to get it printing great results. There are other ways to convert your photographs into 3D lithophane models, but this is the website I used...
    3dp.rocks/lithophane/
    I used the original Snapmaker 3-in-1 3D printer for these Lithophanes, but today they've launched the Kickstarter campaign for the Snapmaker 2 with larger build volumes and a bunch of new features.
    The early bird prices are 50% off the regular retail price (which is pretty amazing for what you get). You can find out more about that on the Kickstarter campaign page here...

    I've managed to get you guys a permanent 5% discount code on Eryone filament. Just use code "johnaldred" on checkout from the Eryone store (ships from the same local warehouses as Amazon).

    Well glad I saw this video I'm currently impatiently waiting for my 2nd attempt to print the first one started and didnt fully stick to the bed

      I have another video on getting prints to stick to the Snapmaker bed that might be worth checking out if you're still struggling. With lithophanes, a brim definitely helps, too. Good luck! :)

    You could also make lithophanes by stacking thin laser cut or machined wood, which you could also do with a snapmaker I imagine. Would love to see a video on that! I'm about to order a Snapmaker 2.0!

      That's a neat idea. I think the CNC would definitely work if you had a material that was translucent enough. I'm not sure about laser. I think the burn marks would possibly ruin the effect. You've really got me thinking about the CNC now, though! I might have to try that. :)

    Awesome vid mate, you still pushing to do the laser module review?

    • @JohnAldred
      @JohnAldred  4 года назад

      Thanks Jason. Yeah, it's still on my list. I meant to have it done ages ago. I even got a filter for my camera made from the same material as the lenses in my laser goggles, heh. But I've been a bit unwell the last couple of months, and just finally starting to feel mostly human again. I'll get to it, though. :)

      @@JohnAldred No worries mate! Focus on your health! The machine looks really well built so it will be just as valid as a day one review. Excited for my SM2!

    Is there a reason you went with this big wall thickness instead of using 100% infill or would both settings be equivalent?

    • @JohnAldred
      @JohnAldred  3 года назад

      Hypothetically, they should both be the same, but personally, I've found that I get better and cleaner looking results when I just set it to fill the whole thing with walls rather than trying to do 100% infill with whatever infill pattern it's set to. So, I've just stuck with it and suggest it. :)

      @@JohnAldred That is good to know! I'll use the wall thickness then. Thank you very much!

    The program for the lithophane keeps wanting to charge me money for the pic. Is this ok? I thought the link was for free????????

      There's no app. It's just a website. You upload your image, change your settings, and then download an STL. I just tested it and it's loading fine. Sounds like you might have some adware or other malware on your system.
