  • The Snapmaker Original is a small but mighty 3-in-1 desktop 3D printer, CNC, and laser engraver. I've had mine for a while, but only recently decided to step out of my 3D printing comfort zone and test out the other functions. Of course, I still managed to sneak in some printing!

    I'm pretty sure the reason the colors are "random" on the prints is similar to the reasoning behind complaints I've seen with mixing extruders. I've heard it called the toothpaste effect similar to how there are stripes in freshly squeezed toothpaste. the color on the surface of the print will primarily be the color closest to that edge and the direction the printhead is moving may play a part as well.

    you could have done some measurements and used the laser to mark out your screw holes accurately. maybe add them to your alignment graphic. you probably could just let it sit on the build plate for the laser but you could use a little tape on two sides to keep it from moving if you were worried about it. this way you could easily re-print and prep sacrificial boards as they wear out.

  • @MarinusMakesStuff

    Thanks for this great review, the best I've seen to far of how the machine is used. They really missed an opportunity by not using countersunk bolts to mount the toolheads. Also, for lasercutting you better get a honeycomb bed.. I'm curious how they will improve the next model. Also, it would be really nice if their CNC setup had a gcode file that would cut out the template for a sacrificial board so you only have to drill the marked holes and saw it square etc.

    As a complete beginner in 3D-printing, and CNC-milling, and laser engraving, and 3D modeling in general, I got the Snapmaker Original to avoid having to buy separate machines.
    Although I'm not as positive on this machine as you Devin, I'm really glad I bought it.
    One thing I hope to be able to do with the SM-one, is carve out a shape in wood (or maybe HPL) and then print the same shape back in. As in: printing an inlay, in place.

    • @make.anything

    • @Jehty_
      @Jehty_ 3 года назад

      I don't think that you can CNC 3D-printed parts. I think the plastic will melt and clock up the mill.

    • @vincentguttmann2231
      @vincentguttmann2231 3 года назад

      @@Jehty_ From experience, I can tell that printed ABS is machinable. You need a few more perimeters at that location since the plastic has to be able to take the cutting forces that the endmills and drills generate, but melting is not a problem. Also, layer adhesion is king, so in that areas, I raise the nozzle temperature to achieve better layer fusion at the expense of print quality. In the end that area will be machined to spec anyway, so that isn't a big deal.

    probably a bit late, but here's a tip to reduce the high pitched noise from the cnc. you see, the bit tends to vibrate if it's extended out too far from the chuck creating noise. so simply mounting it deeper into the chuck might help quite a bit. alternatively you could also use bits that are shorter.
