Turok 2: Seeds of Evil is a first-person shooter video game developed by Iguana Entertainment and originally released for the Nintendo 64 video game console on October 21, 1998. A port of the game was also released for Microsoft Windows shortly afterwards. Turok 2 is the second game in the Turok video game series and a sequel to Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. The game features a single-player mode consisting of six levels where the player assumes the role of Turok as he tries to defeat a powerful alien entity called the Primagen. It also includes a multiplayer mode where various players can compete against each other in several game types.
Turok 2 received very positive reviews from video game journalists and sold more than one million copies in the United States. Critics praised the arsenal of weapons and the length of the levels, but opinions were mixed on its inconsistent frame rate. A separate game, also titled Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, was released for the Game Boy Color in December 1998. Although set in the same fictional universe, it follows a different storyline. A sequel, Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion, was released in 2000. A remastered version of the game, developed by Night Dive Studios, is planned to be released for the Xbox One.

You made many fair observations during your review, but your statement about ammunition being insuficient is just not true. Every level has MANY ammunition and health spawning points, which will keep feeding you items until you are 100% healed and equipped. Also, i don't think you understood how to use some of the weapons. Around the 5 minute mark you waste like 5 shells fighting an enemy at medium range. Turok's shotgun is clearly meant to be used point blank, because it sucks otherwise. What im trying to say here, is that every weapon has a precise use, and it may be up to the player to find when and where to use them, and in the end, that may be the reason for low ammo capacity. If every weapon had a 100 ammo capacity like quake, having 24 weapons would be redundant, because you could simply stick to a powerful gun like the shredder throughout the whole game. By reducing the ammo capacity but also giving you over 20 weapons, the game is more about knowing the weapons and when to use them, and less about trigger-happy approaches. Turok 2 does a fantastic job at balancing the guns, altough there are a couple of useless weapons, such as the tranquiliser and the mine layer.
Anyways, I really enjoyed your review. Am I nostalgia blinded? Maybe, I don’t know. Turok 2 is a game a come back to every 2 years or so, and I never had any ammo problems.
    Cheers!

I'm a bit late to the party but I'd like to add that the weapons also do a different amount of damage depending on the enemy. Those big sword guys with the funny round face-thing in the swamp will take multiple shredder or shotgun rounds to the face, but a tek arrow will one-shot them, and you don't even have to aim except for "hit any part of their body".

Yeah, was odd. I played T2 recently and used the ammo restock from the save points only twice throughout the whole game, never really had an issue with ammo. The balancing felt just right. And the game did hold up. Just depends how you feel about huge mazes that are twice or thrice as large as any doom map. Personally, I love it. Though it could have used better visual signposting in some spots. As for gggman saying it's not hard...of course it's not with unrestrictive saving. On the N64 the game was brutal, mostly in a good way.

Some enemies also drop ammo in the later levels. This encourages you to use weapons in interesting combinations. In level 6 I remember enemies dropping charge darts and plasma rounds, so I found myself stunning enemies and then shooting them point blank with shotgun or even war blade. In level 4 I used tek bow, plasma rifle (to pick off distant crossbow enemies), and flamethrower more so than in other levels. In level 3 the shotgun and mag 60 were my best friends. Levels 1 and 2 were more forgiving and I didn’t feel I had to optimize my weapon usage. And in level 5, man...I just used whatever weapon I ended up selecting in a panic because that level was intense.

Now this is where is at. What can i say about this game, honestly ? I remember playing this and having my god damned jaw dropping to the floor, the graphics, the amazing music (still one of the best soundtracks for a game i've ever heard), the weapons, the story, the game play, everything. This is one of the best shooters i've ever played and the memories are strong with this one. I still listen to its soundtrack to this day, years later. And the weapons in this game are still one of the coolest i've ever seen in a shooter. Lets see what they do with the reboot of this one.Thank you for the great review !

About the ammo/ health shortage: There are actual a lot of places where ammo and health keeps respawning ( indicated by aan distinctive audio cue) It however takes around 20 sec. per spawn and you get aan few bullets per spawn and randomly whichever weapon you need ammo for... so to fully stock up on health and ammo could take a few minutes... You complained about ammo stinginess so I guess you never figured that one out?

  • @Triforce9426
    @Triforce9426 7 лет назад +9

+lllDevilbytheDeedlll The PC controls weren't bad at all, you could configure them to your liking and the mouse wasn't inverted unless you turned the option on.
However the aiming was ridiculous, If you're even a mere pixel off then you won't hit the enemy even with autoaim.

+Gua It literally is the perfect hardcore shooter. People complain about lack of ammo and constant re-spawns, but that was the fucking point of the game, it is designed to piss you off and constantly test you.
Although everyone back at release along with me all agreed it was one of the best shooters ever, kids nowadays obviously hold a different standard but what the fuck do they know.

I find an important point you missed is that every level has various points where the health and ammo pick ups will regenerate, and they will give whatever ammo you are not maxed on so you can just keep backtracking to those points and camp there for a minute or two till you are all stocked. It does feel like your ammo cap that you can carry around at a time is a bit low, but I just found that this meant I had to be strategic with which weapons to use, and so I found it to add to the tension. The atmosphere in this game was incredible to me at the time on the N64 and I still feel it with the PC remaster. I also didn't have too much issue with the inconsistent damage dealt to enemies, and felt that the game was just very picky on hit detection so if you hit a limb then you could blow it off, but if you hit the torso then it may take more ammo. I do recommend the PC remaster from Nightdive studios. Game works great on Windows 10, and many of the more annoying issues with the game have been fixed. The Maze like levels was very frustrating though, especially in maps like the River of Souls, and the Caves of the Blind ones. With how far apart many of the save points were it really did not help, and if you missed an objective and had to backtrack then that was really frustrating.

I like Turok 2 EX much more than the original because it fixed a lot of problems with it. Gone is the bow legged walking effect and objectives are now marked within a vicinity so you have better clarity on where to go next. Finally, besides pushing the fog back, there are texture mods like one using GAN to quadruple the texture detail. Makes a huge difference.
My only gripe with the game is that some of the levels reuse textures too much and ends up looking way too samey so I get lost in the enormous levels. That kind of ruins the fun a bit. I’m surprised you didn’t mention that because it truely is my only gripe. Outside of that it’s better than the N64 and PC release in every possible way.

Turok 2's enemy variety, animations, and art direction still hold up better than most current games. And please don't forget the fantastic soundtrack - Port of Adia is a classic. You can cry nostalgia, but I can tell you went in this review desperately looking for small points anyone could chip off of a great game. No offense to Unreal or Goldeneye, but Turok 2 has itiment violence and remarkable gunplay that those other games cannot satisfy. And yes, I enjoy how the game forces you to conserve ammo. Your suppose to be a Native American badass - not some little COD toddler. Just my opinion.
I suppose I'm just agravated as a fps fan that every smark gamer wants to try to bury this game for some of the most obnoxious reasons.

I love this game, I do remember the game being very stingy with the ammo but I'm pretty sure they where trying to get you to use the bow to one shot snipe enemies from a far as sniper rifles where a brand new thing at the time, also you may not have notice but ammo and health respawns at certain points on the map, there was a audio cue when this happens this happens in most of the large areas so you're never really that far from it, after a while you do get a back pack much like doom that allows for more ammo to be carried and it's only really in the first stage or so that this is an issues if you want to call it that, but I think it gave the game more of a survival feel that along with only having a few save points added to the experience. Save points felt like base camps which I feel is the direction this game series should have moved in.

  • @couldnotic
    @couldnotic 7 лет назад +9

Turok 2 Seed of Evil is still the best Turok game, just because the ammo capacity is low, you have replenish your ammo by waiting for ammo to show up at a spot or going to Adon. Once the remastered version of Turok 2 comes out I'm gonna beat the carp out of that game. Cause I know the whole game.

  • @drahsid2

You could have probably looked around the settings before making most of the complaints. For example, the damage and aim is crippled if autoaim is on (Which is clearly the case, seeing the footage from you.). Not to mention, you also seem to not know how gun play works, you ought to play on easy mode. The framerate issues are also easily fixed, but you would only know that if you didn't pirate the PC version of the game (There is a command switch which can fix it, you can also use a glide wrapper to furthermore improve it). Saying the controls are poor is actually both correct and wrong; the controls are quite smooth, I have never had an issue, you just suck I guess; BUT, if your framerate is > your refresh rate (Aka you set the in game framerate limit to infinity and the glide wrapper framerate to infinity) the game will only detect input 68 frames per second, for some reason. There should also be no confusion, since the game has by far my favorite map system, which can by default can be enabled by middle mouse. You also had an issue with ammunition, well, no argument there, you walked by every small room, though I will agree the mag sizes for the guns are interesting. Eh, I won't attack you for completely misinterpreting the story, it's very unclear without the novel and comics. I'm also going to point out that the game looks so good it runs at 12 FPS on the 64.
    Oh my, that was TL;DR

The only thing you missed is that theres respawning ammo caches to keep your ammo up. However that kinda brings another problem as you camp near those waiting for the ammo to respawn and it kinda brings the game to a halt, and it doesnt fix the low ammo capacity.
Not to mention removing features from the first game like the ammo backpack, armor, and mortal wounds (an item).
I guess in people's mind they mix the good gameplay from the first game with the visual of th second.

Right on with your review. It was a really cool game in 1998 on N64, but it was really hard to do simple things, like aim.
The box came with a mini comic, in which Joshua Fireseed (a direct descendant of Tal Set from the first game) is a normal college student who has been out too late partying and when Aidon summons him all of a sudden to fulfill his ancestral legacy of saving the world from aliens, he's massively hung over.
That, I think, is why this game feels too difficult at times. You literally are being handicapped, because poor Joshua got wasted the night before he had to save Earth.

Your review of this is pretty much on point. You truly explain what a game is good for but also sees what many people fail to notice. I'm one of those people who can find those issues as well. I think Turok 2 was better on the N64 console itself. I heard there is going to be a remastered version for the XBox One and hopefully the PS4.

Dude, bear in mind that old games may run perfectly on WinXP and Win7x32 but may fk up on other OS or hardware variants of PCs. In my experience I never had any issues with any of the Turok games on any of the PCs I had. Ive ran it on Win7 x64, Nvidia 9800GT with 4 GB RAM with no problems at all. Keep in mind that sometimes framerates do NOT count on PC power.
Oh and... THIS game is still alive in multiplayer!!!

When I played the night dive studios remaster of Turok 1, I had the same ammo deficiency problem while playing on Hard. Switching it to medium alleviated it though. I'm looking forward to NDS releasing this game but I hope the ammo isn't a problem when it comes out.

  • @Usersunited

a lot of the "bad port" complaints are solvable.
It takes a lot of work and is a huge hassle, but the framerate jumping up and down, as well as wrong colors/textures on explosions can all get fixed if you do enough digging. It will be nice when the remaster gets released because that will fix all the issues i had with the game. Still a good bit of fun.

About the enemy dismemberment system, you should check out Chasm: The Rift from 1997. A 3D FPS that had a really well implemented dismemberment system, probably among the first to feature it. You could blow off both arms of some of the enmies leaving them with only a kick for defence.

+Derrick Wierzbicki I played Will Rock almost decade ago, got nice menu music (I wanna Rock!), cool guns (M911 and rifle) and levels were cool and not tedious. Plus enemy variety and pisseasy final boss (just stay under feets of Zeus and you'll be safe).

  • @TheBaioken

One of my all time favorites.
One thing I have to mention is, yes there is quite problem with ammo BUT there are certain corners of the levels were ammo respawns, maybe you missed that, because you have to wait a few seconds, maybe even 10, each time. Which is also stupid and tedious, and not a good system, but its there, and you can "farm" to stack up your whole arsenal full.
I see that inconsistent damage output/health with the enemies is kinda annoying, but I also liked it for some reason. Has a less videogame-ish feel to it, like a bit more unpredictable. Thats kinda cool. Like when you shoot a bear, you cant say for sure after how many hits he will go down. Either they add in modern games a VERY detailed damage model like "oh, you hit a vital organ in the body, he is dead" or you just kinda randomize it out. But I agree. it varies too much in this game.
What I also like in Turok, what distinguishes it from games like Quake, Doom etc. are the vast levels. Has a total different feel to it. While yeah, you can get easily lost, I somehow love the feel of exploring and fighting in such stages.

  • @StrikerTheHedgefox
    @StrikerTheHedgefox 7 лет назад

The framerate juddering is mainly because on modern PCs the game's framerate isn't throttled correctly (the FPS limiter keeps flickering on and off). If one uses DGVoodoo2, and adds -maxframerate 62 to the command line for Turok 2 it'll fix it, however, it may make certain swimming sections difficult or impossible due to the water flow being tied to framerate. Also, keep in mind that the unstable framerate on modern systems is also what fucks with enemy hitboxes, and can cause the weirdness with enemies taking more hits than usual. It's a game best run on a Slot-1 Pentium 2 400mhz machine with a pair of Voodoo2s, running on Windows 98.

I never had a serious issue with running out of ammo in this game. There were quite a few places where ammo kept re-spawning and it was simply a matter of waiting a few minutes until all was filled up again.
Surely the limited ammo ceiling could be annoying at times but it really forced you to play around with all weapons and think ahead. which is a good thing in my opinion.
And I definitely died a few time cuz of low ammo troubles. The hit detection was indeed off.
The maze design style of the levels could cause for some frustrating moments especially on the later levels.
Like you, I have never finished the game since I got stuck on the spaceship assembly line. Couldn't puzzle it out what I needed to do.
Now the multiplayer was fun, playing it for hours and hours meeting new people there on deathmatch.
A small but tight community until Jedi Knight came out and we all moved there.
It marked the end of Turok 2's multiplayer.

+shaddapforever Yeah I think the biggest issue with this game was the maze like design of the later levels. Well I could even finish Port of Adia (1st level) without cheats. This game also has the worst case of backtracking. But in any case its the first fps I played back in 2001 and have fond memories of it . This is one of the few games that badly needs a remake, just like Doom 4.

On the N64 at least I know there are multiple locations where ammo and health with respawn until you're full of both. Especially in the first level and first flesh portal. Completely agree that the Lair of the Blind Ones was the most tedious level. i remember there was one part where I got completely stuck and couldn't even make my way back to a save point so I had to restart from a previous part.

I think most people think of this as an N64 game though. I dunno, I've never played a Turok game, but I imagine usually when people talk about it, they're thinking of the N64 game.
So take that into account when talking about the nostalgia factor. As a PC game it may not stack up, but as an N64 game it might.
Like I said, I've never played a Turok game, so I couldn't possibly comment on that, I can only speculate.
