  • The sequel to Turok: Dinosaur Hunter has deep gameplay and the remaster by Night Dive Studios improves the formula. But is it still the best of the series? Watch the video to find out!

Eh, I completely disagree with your opinion. Turok 2 to me is the pinnacle of the series which improved on the foundation of an already solid first game. No other game at the time had such huge worlds to explore or such a unique arsenal of weapons and enemy variety. It really adds to the replayability of the game.
Turok 3 just felt so watered down and half assed in comparison. The levels were bland, linear and forgettable and that unresolved cliffhanger ending will always leave me feeling jaded. The series has been in freefall ever since.

It's funny, I hated T3 back in the day, but in retrospect, I actually feel it is a much more playable game than T2 (if we're talking N64 versions anyway).
T1 is still the most fun, even though it certainly has issues too. A shame T1 didn't get as many upgrades as T2 in their respective remasters. Hopefully T3 Remastered gets the same attention and treatment as T2 Remstered.

@@N.i.E.M.O T1 is still my favorite. The faster movement, the pulse-pounding music. That game felt much more "evil" to me in its tone, largely because of the music. In 2 the music just didn't do it for me - it may have been "good" but it wasn't what I was looking for in Turok. I kept feeling like I was hearing bits of the Goldeneye soundtrack, like Streets or something. It was almost military like with it's drums, whereas the music in 1 felt more primal and evil at times.

It definitely had a distinct atmosphere that was unlike any other FPS game at the time - including its sequels. Gameplay also felt the most fluid and fast-paced. Sure it isn't as technologically advanced as the later games, but in many ways, the game is 'more fun'.
It's a shame that Evolution couldn't recapture that same atmosphere of T1, despite being advertised as "returning to the series' roots". Ironically, Evolution felt more like a poor man's Halo (with graphics that were hardly an improvement over the N64 games).

The checkpoint system in this game was fine as it was. I wouldn't want to be able to save in Dark Souls, anywhere I want.
There is nothing wrong with the level design. Getting lost is okay. Navigation being a part of the challenge is okay. It's not a flaw.

    • @N.i.E.M.O
      @N.i.E.M.O Год назад +4

The issue is that so many areas look very samey and mazelike - often looping back into themselves if you take the wrong path. There's also tons of necessary backtracking to complete objectives or opening up previously closed gates, which never had any visual indicator of which gate was opened, so you just have to wander around until you find it (and hopefully realize it's actually a new path you haven't already traversed).
Turok 2 was amazing for it's technical accomplishments back in the day, but from a game design standpoint it us extremely frustrating. Even more so than even Turok 1 in many respects.

I feel like the zelda comprision isnt a good one. Turok 2 should be compared more with metroid since that has the same design style. And alot of the back tracking bar a few exceptions is displayed with the tailsman pads that match the ones in the inventory menu which tells you what level its in. Plus the game makes ir clear right at level 1 back tracking and exploring is required. So while i agree its not the best design it is clearly convayed in game how the level design is. I loved the video but i tend to disagree with some points brought up, hopefully i brought and bring them up in a civil way. I love this game but underatand why you dont.

found rebinding stuff to the d-pad to work better since if you set a shotgun to one direction you dont need to set another shotgun and it will default to the shredder when swapping to it. same for charge dart, etc.
19:00 you could buy a strat guide or look things up... but then again why even play the game? you already are using the obj markers.
19:30 Banjo Tooie is praised for the same thing; big issue is maps like lair of the blind one where every floor's opening area is the same save for the surface.
21:53 no... the door is a centerpiece to a room... oh fuck me where did you get those keys? do you remember? they are barely hidden and might as well be unguarded.

14:13: for one of your cons
It all depends on what kind of enemy you're facing so they have different HP values
I mean you can't have every enemy have the same HP value that'll make the game way too easy
you need to have some sort of challenge..

The two enemies at the written time were Endtails. Therefore, they should have the same amount of health. Having spontaneous health amounts between copies of the same enemy is pretty questionable if you ask me.

@@Guptill89 so why didn't you use a stronger weapon?..
you can blast off an enemy's head with one shot from a shotgun
And it's very satisfying to do so

@@Guptill89 i think Im gonna have to agree
Having random groups of the same enemy having different hp kinda pulls you out of the game
I would be 100% ok with the different hp if they were at least different colors kinda like the elites in Halo have
But il understand if the N64 was already stretched beyond limits

I actually tested this and it seems whats going on is a hit box issue with hitting the arms or s during a monsters pain state. You can test this easily on the stationary endtrail in port of adia. I did this and it took 5 shots to kill the endtrail when shooting slowly but more ehen i spammed. This also might be effected by version and platifourm since i tested it on 1.5.1 on pc. Plus the matids have the same health as the endtrails also so you can compare withbthos aswell.
