Eh, I completely disagree with your opinion. Turok 2 to me is the pinnacle of the series which improved on the foundation of an already solid first game. No other game at the time had such huge worlds to explore or such a unique arsenal of weapons and enemy variety. It really adds to the replayability of the game. Turok 3 just felt so watered down and half assed in comparison. The levels were bland, linear and forgettable and that unresolved cliffhanger ending will always leave me feeling jaded. The series has been in freefall ever since.
It's funny, I hated T3 back in the day, but in retrospect, I actually feel it is a much more playable game than T2 (if we're talking N64 versions anyway). T1 is still the most fun, even though it certainly has issues too. A shame T1 didn't get as many upgrades as T2 in their respective remasters. Hopefully T3 Remastered gets the same attention and treatment as T2 Remstered.
@@N.i.E.M.O T1 is still my favorite. The faster movement, the pulse-pounding music. That game felt much more "evil" to me in its tone, largely because of the music. In 2 the music just didn't do it for me - it may have been "good" but it wasn't what I was looking for in Turok. I kept feeling like I was hearing bits of the Goldeneye soundtrack, like Streets or something. It was almost military like with it's drums, whereas the music in 1 felt more primal and evil at times.
@@CMCFLYYY It definitely had a distinct atmosphere that was unlike any other FPS game at the time - including its sequels. Gameplay also felt the most fluid and fast-paced. In a different review this game is a Metroidvania. Anyone who has played a Metroid game knows to shoot random things if you are stuck. I think many of these puzzles don't bother me because I grew up on Super Metroid. You have to backtrack but you can sequence break. There is nothing stopping you from playing level 3 before level 2. I recommend this as you only have to play the River of Souls once with the ability to go into the water. You can also have the Shredder and Plasma rifle making it far easier. You can also play Level 5 before level 4 as well and have some seriously good artillery to make the worst mission easier.

The checkpoint system in this game was fine as it was. I wouldn't want to be able to save in Dark Souls, anywhere I want. There is nothing wrong with the level design. Getting lost is okay. Navigation being a part of the challenge is okay. It's not a flaw.
The issue is that so many areas look very samey and mazelike - often looping back into themselves if you take the wrong path. There's also tons of necessary backtracking to complete objectives or opening up previously closed gates, which never had any visual indicator of which gate was opened, so you just have to wander around until you find it (and hopefully realize it's actually a new path you haven't already traversed). Turok 2 was amazing for it's technical accomplishments back in the day, but from a game design standpoint it us extremely frustrating. Even more so than even Turok 1 in many respects.
