I love this game. The story was great and the knife combat was fucking badass. Then again, I never played the other Turok games. Perhaps if this wasn't called Turok it would have been received better. I consider this game a hidden gem.
I can agree the game has it's ups but (and I'm speaking from the experience of playing the other games.) This one is mostly for visuals and completely steps away from the lore of the original games. In my opinion it's the lowest out of the turok series.

It sold well enough to get a sequel, but sadly Disney shut down all their game divisions except for the devs behind Disney Infinity.
Yeah perfect dark did have a much better atmosphere compared to this game. Though through the time of it's evolution it is and will still be nice to see it made it this far to say the least despite the waterfall it fell down.

Played the Xbox 360 version at launch, and for some reason the console ports have no aim assist in them. I know that's a laughable comment for PC players, but it rendered the game a massive pain in the arse to play on a joypad.
Larry Bundy Jr this was especially true on 360 where the FPS went so slow sometimes. Aside from the constant shaking and bluriness more than 3 guys and the FPS went down to 10 and everything became stiff to control
I remember playing a demo of this back in 2008 on a disc from xbox magazine. I remember the game looking absolutely gorgeous on a CRT monitor, now I'm like "What the hell was I so excited about". How the times have changed.
I enjoyed this game because that novelty on "Jurrasic time" with dinos & etc, also the esthetic kinda remind me of Dino Crisis (but not by much). Years later I played Turok remastered OG series & I totally understood why fans hated this game.
That is one thing i really appreciate this current generation for...games became artistically colourful again. I definetly dont miss the bland greys and browns of the previous generation
If by "artistically colourful" you mean "re-use the same oversaturated colour palette every 2nd game" then yeah. I miss games that didn't make me vomit rainbow from the second I launched them.
Yeah RDR2 Looks Like Candy Land, Especially New Austin Looks More Like Being On Mars Than A Freaking Desert. RDR1 Had That Mature Gritty Texture Look. 👌 Gayyyy
I do. I loved darker palettes. That said, as long as stuff is visible and not blurry I don't really care that much. But I can't stand super colourful eye sores
I used to love this game when I was little, and just a year ago I played it again. I guess I still love it for nostalgic reasons and can't accept it as a bad game. It's generic, very, but it is kind of entertaining sometimes. The build-up before meeting the dinos, the tall grass, the feeling that you are a badass former spec ops goon and god damn DINOSAURS - all that still warms my heart. I'm not saying it's better than any other game, I just like it is all.
Yes, indeed! I just can't live without a new GGGboss' video :) My recipe is: favourite cup of coffee, omelettes, sandwitches and some buns along with the new video. The recipe is just idiot proof :D
Killing the T-Rex with a live grenade rammed in its eye blowing its head off is easily the most satisfying moment in this game especially after how hard the boss fight was, i wish there were more segments in the story line to kill enemies stealthy with your knife, just recently finished the game again on PC in 4K, i liked the multiplayer part to, every one would always use the knife, but the multiplayer part is sadly dead, i wish the game was available to play on steam and its multiplayer servers,
I use to like this game but after playing remastered versions of Turok 1 & 2. Turok (2008) just looks shit in comparison. The remastered versions of Turok 1 & 2, are way more fun to play. They're definitely worth your time and money.
I had both on Nintendo 64 at that time. To think that now we could play then in arbitrary resolutions and framerates is really awesome, i couldn't be more happy... Well, If one day they remaster Turok 3...
@@DragoonBB I always thought it was fun accomplishing them though, it's what made the game so fun to explore, kept you coming back to discover what you missed as well.
Grew up with the N64 Turoks, they've aged terribly. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are the best N64 FPS games. Turok is a dead franchise. The remasters did not revive the franchise. The comic books from the 90s were better than the games, actual story and characters. The games were just Doom clones.
That era of FPS games were so rough for me. They were all generic corridor shooters with weapon limits (like Duke Nukem Forever). So many FPS games flopped, but it was necessary because we're getting good FPS games now which learned from the mistakes of that era.
Not going to lie, in 2008 I did not have money to buy games as much as I wanted, my best mate at the time clearly knew this and his game purchases were heavily influenced by me, and the games I would go on about. This game holds dear memories for me and him, sticking enemies to walls with the bow and knife fighting on the multiplayer. Loved it.
The Pig Scoff it's the main reason i subbed to this guy. No one else is interested in going back to review the old classics like Condemned, Turok, Resistance, etc. my favorite however, has always been Dead To Rights Retribution. Such an underrated gem.
If there's one thing I hated about the early HD era is how gray everything is. Even something like Turok, that takes place in a jungle, environments just have this Gears of War gray to it. It's so boring. I used to think it was just the Unreal engine, that's what it was good at so that's what developers created but then something like Guilty Gear Xrd comes along and proves that Unreal can do some super awesome stuff graphically. I grabbed it on the PS4 and was amazed but even the PS3 version of that game is beautiful. I guess color is for pussies or something because these dude-bro games never seem to use it aside from ketchup crimson for the blood effects.
And don't forget Batman Arkham Knight, Mortal Kombat series and Injustice 2, all of then show how lazy most devs where with UE3 and it's generic looks.
I forgot to mention, Singularity was one of those games with that gray tone & because of that, while playing I often forgot the game didn't have regenerating health.
I remember when X-play gave this game an award for "Game Deserves An Uwe Boll Movie". I'm not joking. It does feel like the sort of thing Uwe Boll would make, if he still made movies. (Thank god, he's retired.)
Kirkio platforming and level design in turok dinosaur hunter is far better than linear SoE map design with way to much back tracking. Also SoE has a lot of inefficient weapons. I don’t like the screams sound effects Turok 1 has an amazing booming soundtrack and immersive experience
@@DragoonBB i know I'm not the guy you asked, but as i have playef Turok 1, 2 and 3 plus evolution. If have to say evolution is my favorite, there is just something about it I fucking love
@Dragoon-BB I have Turok Evolution and finished all of then. Evolution is the harder one, enemies could headshot instant kill you and they use this. Maps are large and sometimes confusing, there is not any collectibles this time, the only reason to explore is new weapons or some weapon upgrades. And there is the fly segments, which is the worst part of Evolution. How It compare to the 3 before? Is the weaker of the original series, but never a bad game, it still is Turok in all of it's essence, still have awesome weapons, the gore is superb (they shot at meat for the sound, it's amazing!) and is atmospheric coeherent with the previous installments. And for the record i have It on both PC and OG Xbox, the 2 best versions. If you wanna try It, Xbox version is the complete visuals version, even the PC version dropped some effects that are exclusive to Xbox, which is a shame, but on PC you can use any resolution (even 4k), it support widescreen (vertical -, sadly) and doesn't have framerate cap, you must turn v-sync on via driver. It support anisotropic filter but AA must be via driver too. So it's a matter of preference. It also support KB and mouse properly and gamepad.
I prefer Evolution and this reboot. The N64 Turoks aged terribly. Level design and AI suck. Story is nonexistent. The only positives are a few stand out weapons and the death animations. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are by far better, especially Perfect Dark. The 90s Turok comics were great though, actual story and characters. Kept the more mature rating too. Doesn't seem the remasters revived the franchise. There was even a new Turok comic in 2017. Must've not sold well though as it only lasted a few issues.
I still like Turok 1 the most, with 2 right after. Turok 3 and Evolution i like both in the same level. But to be honest i love the entire quadrilogy (does this word exist???).
TouchStone solely exists so they don't publish their Disney brand on anything that isn't family friendly. It's how they can have their cake, and eat it too.
Man, my first entry into this series that I know love so much was Turok Evolution. I know the game has tons of issues, but my nostalgia tends to blind me. Please review the last entries. You reviewed some of the N64 games before. We all are waiting for Turok 3 and Rage Wars ;-)
I actually loved this game as a kid and replayed it recently and still enjoyed it. I think it is better without relating it back to the other games in the series. The knife being the best weapon in the game is something that the devs were going for - and actually pulled off which is hard to do in an FPS. In pvp you would hardly see other people walking around shooting, and if you did they would get their throat cut pretty quick. The constant dinosaurs added another exciting dimension to the game imo and I loved the setting - trapped in the jungle with a group of people surviving against all odds. I think it was good as Turok had generally been ridden to death and was heading toward being outdated after Turok 2. This is different to the general theme game companies go for - same thing over and over until it fails to sell. Where they said - let’s try something different. It definitely had its shortcomings but I would actually recommend it. Focusing on stealth gameplay as opposed to shooting to accentuate the knife.
I played Turok back when it came out, and then I promptly forgot about it until you made this review lol. You talked about how the weapons suck which is pretty accurate, but the bow was pretty fun imo. I just wanna say, I really love your reviews. Your personality, consistency and attention to detail is all really top-knotch. More importantly, you seem to be one of the only major game reviewers who remembers that there were actually games released in years 2006-2012. This was when I was in college and actually had time and money to play a lot of the middleware (a category that's all but disappeared now), so it's really nice to see reviews for the lesser-known titles of an increasingly distant era. Thanks!
Turok 64 was hands down one of the best fps game , take the music which makes you feel pumped when playing it , they were all distinct to each level, the same can be said when switching to the weapons, majority of them had a distinct sound effect.
Great review! Once again, you pretty much nailed how I felt playing this game back in the day. I never played the first or second games until the remasters came out on GOG. I bought them both, played and enjoyed the first (which was surprisingly awesome), but never even installed Seeds Of Evil for some reason. I think now would be a good time for me to rectify that. Happy New Year!
I remember playing this game as a kid on the N64, remembering that square arena place with the Dinos behind fences. Then picking up the reboot in 2008 and loving it, looking back now I didn’t realize the flaws it had. Might go back into this series for a trip down memory lane
Turok 3's protagonists were Joseph and Danielle Fireseed, Joshua's younger brother and older sister. Yes, Joshua was in the game, but only as a part of the story (and as a playable character, but only through cheats)
So... In 1997 Turok started out as a console game, which later had PC ports. But in 2008 they had to "dumb down” Turok to have it work on consoles. Nah man, that's not fair enough. It's lazy developers.
Yeah, UE3... tons of bloom and potato-faced steroids victims. Not gonna miss that time. And yeah, Turok's chaingun is complete opposite of E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy chaingun.
@PUPPET MASTER Indeed Unreal Engine 3 had its problems, but optimisation wasn't one of them. It completely depends on the game, take Unreal Tournament 3 for example, incredibly well optimised
I remember picking this up as a young teen. Coming from the Nintendo 64 version, 1, 2 & 3 being some of the greatest experiences I had played. Needless to say when I got up the the first T-Rex in this game I'd had enough and switched it off. It's an experience I'd rather forget, it doesn't deserve the Turok name or brand.
oh my lord, when he's duel wielding the shotguns I thought he was aiming and therefore zoomed in but then he turned around was still "zoomed" , that actually made me feel a little sick
Call me a nitpicker, but one thing that bothers me just looking at this footage is how slow Turok moves compared to the other games in the series. I’ve never played a Turok game before, but the previous games all looked like they had a pretty sweet movement speed. Here, it honestly looks like Turok is moving at the speed of Ethan Thomas from Condemned: Criminal Origins. Compare this to other reboots of older FPS games like DOOM and Shadow Warrior, which, even though they came out later, had a brisk movement speed. Here, it just looks like you’re moving through molasses.
His slow movement speed becomes more apparent when you're being chased down by a T-Rex. If you have no solid objects to circle around, you will be caught almost instantly. Btw, that means instant death animation (being eaten).
T1 and 2 levels are huge though. And they have very boring missions where you need to find switches and "keys" in maze like environments. The remasters also add notifications on where to go so that the player won't be completely lost. They were still entertaining because they looked rather good at the time and the music in at least in the first two games were good. The original PC conversions actually cut down the music of some levels for the PC, this was before mp3 were used, but at least the remasters fixed this.
Hirnlego999 After writing this comment, I actually went back and played the NDS Remaster of Turok 2, and I have to say that I enjoy it wholeheartedly. The gore system is nice, the guns feel satisfying to use, and the levels, while confusing at times, feel varied and expansive with lots of little secrets that encourage you to explore.
I've recently gotten into playing your reviews in the background while watching raw vegan paleo icecream recipes on mute. suffice to say it is something else.
I played the first Turok and fell in love, so much that I actually pre-ordered Turok 2. It was the first game I ever pre-ordered, because of the free t-shirt, and I've only done that with two games in my life. The other game was Arkham Asylum.
I wouldn't even both with the PC version of Turok Evolution. I managed to get it to work somehow and it is one of the worst ports I've ever experienced. Horrible controls, lame graphics, low FOV, etc. Just play some console version emulated or on the real thing if you can get it.
The FOV is tied to aspect ratio so it's best played in 5:4 resolution like 1280x1024. As for controls, Steam does an amazing job If you spend some time configuring. And the graphics are the second best, because certain visual effects are exclusive to Xbox version.
@@JelloPotate Yes, i use It. You have to add Turok Evolution as a non Steam game, then you can config out of the game or in the game with big picture. Here It fells the same, If not better than the OG Xbox. I use dualshock 4 but Xbox 360/One controllers or Switch Pro controller work too. If you don't want to add Turok to Steam then go in big picture and config the controller for desktop, It work just the same.
Gears of War ruined the gaming landscape for a good while. Characters all had to be big meaty space marines who could barely grunt out a complete sentence, everything was in shades of gray and brown, and it seemed like anything lighthearted or colorful was avoided at all costs. For all the problems the industry has right now, at least we're finally getting away from all that edgy bullshit.
You know, honestly thank you for making a review on this, you’re a true hero. Cause not only did you actually play the game, but you actually played the previous titles which gives a good comparison to those ones to this one now. But all in all you have fulfilled my curiosity of this game, thank you!

Prey was a better Turok game than Turok.
Very True! The original Prey.
Jaime Martinez Ahh yes.... one of my personal favourites !
I appreciate your taste, good sir
Preferred Turok tbh although prey had some great aspects I didn't find it fun...until I found Judas priest on the jukebox.lol
it was not omfg :D
That is one thing i really appreciate this current generation for...games became artistically colourful again. I definetly dont miss the bland greys and browns of the previous generation
If by "artistically colourful" you mean "re-use the same oversaturated colour palette every 2nd game" then yeah. I miss games that didn't make me vomit rainbow from the second I launched them.
Yeah RDR2 Looks Like Candy Land, Especially New Austin Looks More Like Being On Mars Than A Freaking Desert. RDR1 Had That Mature Gritty Texture Look. 👌
Gayyyy
Well im not into RDR but games like Outer worlds, Doom Eternal, FF7 Remake and even Ghost of Tshushima are artistically colourful. They not bland
I do. I loved darker palettes. That said, as long as stuff is visible and not blurry I don't really care that much. But I can't stand super colourful eye sores
The multiplayer for this was one of the first I ever experienced. Was fun asf back in the day
I used to love this game when I was little, and just a year ago I played it again.
When I was 8 I got this game and I absolutely loved it. Will always hold this in high regard, no matter the legitimate quality of the game.

Killing the T-Rex with a live grenade rammed in its eye blowing its head off is easily the most satisfying moment in this game especially after how hard the boss fight was,
i wish there were more segments in the story line to kill enemies stealthy with your knife, just recently finished the game again on PC in 4K, i liked the multiplayer part to, every one would always use the knife, but the multiplayer part is sadly dead, i wish the game was available to play on steam and its multiplayer servers,
I use to like this game but after playing remastered versions of Turok 1 & 2. Turok (2008) just looks shit in comparison. The remastered versions of Turok 1 & 2, are way more fun to play. They're definitely worth your time and money.
If only the maps weren't literal mazes.
@@DragoonBB
They aren't that confusing.

Loved it.

Well.. Christmas came early!
I really loved the dino takedowns with the knife in this game. I remember playing it a lot back then!
DEAD TO RIGHTS: RETRIBUTION
please review it.
The games have the same feel but Dead to Rights is actually fun to play
Here's a review:
it sucks
Jori Haanpää i thoroughly enjoyed it.
Oh yess! i have soo many good memories of these older 360 games. No one ever seems to talk about dead to rights.
The Pig Scoff it's the main reason i subbed to this guy. No one else is interested in going back to review the old classics like Condemned, Turok, Resistance, etc. my favorite however, has always been Dead To Rights Retribution. Such an underrated gem.
FOV 55?! That has to be a crime.
I know just what you mean, and that's Unreal 3 for you.
I think its because of UE3 and how its more easier to make it more gritty than actual visual style or even colorful.
@@Merlaut715 at least it made sense it that game though, setting wise.
Man, have you had a good week or something, ´cause this is by far your wittiest review to date?! Good on ya!
Is it weird I've been waiting for this review all night?
I remember being blown away by the graphics when I was a kid because I was used to PS2 games. Looking at this now brings things into perspective.
I remember when X-play gave this game an award for "Game Deserves An Uwe Boll Movie". I'm not joking. It does feel like the sort of thing Uwe Boll would make, if he still made movies. (Thank god, he's retired.)
All the rampage movies were good and he'll be missed
@@Jaydenwybenga I was referring to his movies based on videogames. But I agree that Rampage (not the one based on the game) was pretty good
Turok will never get better than Seeds of Evil.
Kirkio agreed
Kirkio platforming and level design in turok dinosaur hunter is far better than linear SoE map design with way to much back tracking. Also SoE has a lot of inefficient weapons. I don’t like the screams sound effects
Turok 1 has an amazing booming soundtrack and immersive experience
totally agree
i mean this is good and all, and a nice retrospective review by all means, but where is our kane and lynch 2 review you promised us, mate?
Another great review. I never get enough of Gggmanlives.
Turok on the gamecube was my childhood, they should make a new one.
How's Turok Evolution compared to the first 3 games?
You're reviews are the best seriously I look forward to them
It’s funny Disney of all family-friendly companies published an M rated game
Gaming Guru579 This game was published under DISNEY company?!
...well, Epic Mickey is kinda dark and mature, but didn’t know that before!
Yep TouchStone is owned by Disney
Well touchstone also publish horror movies and stuff
They use the Disney brand for family friendly features and hide it somewhere in the credit for the opposite.

A chaingun isn't the same as a minigun bruv, a chaingun is just a gun that uses a chain like an autocannon.
Nerrrrrrrrd.
Thanks!
This game just basically turn it into a generic military shooter with dinosaurs.
I remember when Yahtzee reviewed this game. He summed it up in 4 words: Lets be like Halo
Turok 64 was hands down one of the best fps game , take the music which makes you feel pumped when playing it , they were all distinct to each level, the same can be said when switching to the weapons, majority of them had a distinct sound effect.
I made it to the final Trex boss and died repeatedly. Never was able to beat it.
1:40 i grew up on the n64 version and everytime he was revived he'd yell "I am turok!" or something like that didnt he?
Yes.
I remember playing this game as a kid on the N64, remembering that square arena place with the Dinos behind fences. Then picking up the reboot in 2008 and loving it, looking back now I didn’t realize the flaws it had. Might go back into this series for a trip down memory lane
The reboot no one really cares about
Nathaniel Foga sadly...it’s true

Yes, Joshua was in the game, but only as a part of the story (and as a playable character, but only through cheats)
So...
In 1997 Turok started out as a console game, which later had PC ports. But in 2008 they had to "dumb down” Turok to have it work on consoles.
Nah man, that's not fair enough. It's lazy developers.
thejonathan130 Garrett in general does not think fondly of console ports.
We lost the ability to scroll through weapons, after weapon wheels became popular. The only thing that dumbed-down were the devs.
Massmarketing, make it mainstream.
Not that the original Turok games are masterpieces either.

@PUPPET MASTER Jesus, your computer must be incredibly old or something... Also, optimisation depends on the game lol

Sadly they never made more games after this its not a bad game just not as good as past games in the series.
And that's why I call them: Ungraceful sequels/reboots.

The antagonist in this game resembles Grayson Hunt from Bulletstorm
Станислав Наумов Now we know what happened to him after he took around that general...
I have some of the fondest childhood memories with Turok Evolution. It was the most challenging game I’ve ever played yet so fun at the same time.
The damn Trex fight at the end was unbeatable
Turok in Russian means "turkish (man)"
Man I love this game so much happy to see another video on it again
@@ZinhoMegaman Can steam configure non steam games? And rectify the mouse deadzone it seems to have?
@@JelloPotate Yes, i use It. You have to add Turok Evolution as a non Steam game, then you can config out of the game or in the game with big picture. Here It fells the same, If not better than the OG Xbox. I use dualshock 4 but Xbox 360/One controllers or Switch Pro controller work too. If you don't want to add Turok to Steam then go in big picture and config the controller for desktop, It work just the same.
We love you Boogie! Great video!
Gears of war?!lmao your fucking around right? That game is one of the best
You know, honestly thank you for making a review on this, you’re a true hero.
