This beauty has a rich history and an undeniable presence, but unfortunately, it arrives at the garage in a state of disrepair. However, there's a twist to this story. Our team has been strictly instructed not to start the engine under any circumstances.
Will Jared be able to resist the temptation and curiosity that comes with such a magnificent machine? As we all know, his love for cars often leads him down unpredictable paths. The stakes are high, and the allure of revving that engine is almost too much to bear. Will he give in to the temptation or respect the instructions and find alternative ways to restore this automotive masterpiece?

Awesome, just signed up!
At least it's not too difficult to remove the engine and transmission from one of those. I worked as a Porsche tech for 5 years back in the mid 2000's, they're designed to come apart easily when they need to be serviced. They were some of the nicest cars to work on, but I might have been biased since we also sold VW, Audi, and Jaguar, which I hated having to mess with, especially the Jags.
Agreed, I’ve been working on German cars for 30 years
Agreed its literally like 30 bolts a hand full of clips and a few wires that need undone
Having been a certified Jag mechanic some years back, I can't really argue with you about "over complicated", poor vendor parts and so on. But you may have missed the real beauty of the thing- the flat rates were awesome- like six hours to do the rear brakes on an E Type or other with inboard disc brakes.
@fredericrike5974 all I ever managed to get was oil pan leaks and blown up transfer cases in X-Types. Those stupid things kept us busy. I also remember the giant recall the redesigned XJs needed in their first model year that we had a hard time getting parts for.
@@craigbomer8962 I was gone by that point to the independent side. most of my clients thereafter were sporty types and all had good money. The X type was a "wish job" Ford Motor Company inserted into the mix after buying Jag and Rover two very different engineering offices, across an ocean from each other were involved in that project that it would have huge warts on it seems fitting. Tellme, did the overall sorry electrics ever get answered? I know a lot of folks blame Lucas, but the standards adopted while the British government held British Leyland were what I found to be culprit. Lucas was quite capable of really dynamite work, as the systems they built for British fighters and bombers would attest to. They were given abysmal low specs and given really cheap money to produce wiring, batteries, switches and other gear for production cars under the BL plan.
Well, chain rail guides and tensioners are relatively cheap, and it's not hard to pull the heads to get at them, as long as it's not the IMS guide. Question is how much damage has already been done!
Before you pull the motor, you might be able to pull the cam plugs on the ends of the cams to check the timing marks against engine TDC. Heck they're probably already pulled and that's where half that oil is from :) I'm sure it's out of time.
Hopefully you don't find any bent valves, but the piston seems to go first, and I think you'd know if one of those was broken - very different sound (and the engine would already be done anyways!)
That screaching noise is your starter that is well worth fixing, it sounds like it could be partially the oil air separator boot is causing major vacuum leak as well, my 2.7l boxster sounded similar when the boot ripped and it didnt run well until i replaced the boot, it does sound like the timing guides are broken as well but overall fixing a porsche is one of the most satisfying cars to work on, keep it up you will fall in love with that car
I will 100% second this. I owned a 2001 Boxster with the 2.7l. That screeching noise sounds like the starter. I had the exact same sound. I took the starter apart and lubricated the bearings/pivot points. The sound went away after that. Mine also sounded like that after startup, especially when it sat for a while. The air/oil separator tube had cracked. Once it was replaced, it ran like a charm. So all is not lost, at least I hope it isn't.
Cranking it the first time was questionable, but I get it. The third time was bordering on dumb. Cool car though, and I'm looking forward to more videos on it. When those were new I didn't pay much attention to them but they do look good now. And unlike the rehabilitation of the Bangle-body Bimmers, it's not because the new ones look terrible.
I think by the 3rd try we were well into ignorant territory
Great choice, I'm excited for this build. $10k is a great deal for this. Probably gonna cost another $10k to fix, but it'll be worth much more after Jared's special touch.
Jimmy Oaks, Adam LZ, and now Jared all working on Porsches at the same time and I'm here for it.
Now if Kyle from boostedboiz and Cleetus would mod theirs.
Budget Buildz 911 Targa is nearly done, but still gets a video now and then.
Even Tony at Stay Tuned got one. Did a 'get a Porsche now' text go out or something? I didn't get one.
@@edaw0it’s Tony’s 3rd 911.
I think RUclips sent out a memo to go buy 911s
From the BMWs I've owned I can say that howling sound when it turns on is definitely the TIming guides. I wouldn't start it anymore until its fix. I had that on a mini cooper as well and ended up bending all valves! Great find hope to see it rebuilt!!
It's the starter bushing whine that comes from a high mileage VW starter, which no doubt is what the Porsche has. Happens when the key returns to the run position and cuts power to the solenoid
@@davewhite1652 vw doesn´t built starter
@@oliverroedel1111Porsche don't build gearbox neother. That's not thé point.
It's probably a wv style installation of the alternator.
@@oliverroedel1111 VW and Porsche have been joined at the hip for a long time. I'll be more precise for you then... Bosch built the starter which uses the same style and bushing as a VW unit hence the exact same noise that comes from any MK4 and up VW starter which is worn out. Is that a better explanation for you? Gotta love keyboard warriors
I don't know why this video doesn't have any more likes than that... I'm not an exotics or German car guy, except for the old classics. I kinda like some generations of Porsches, but this one is my least favorite, like everyone else. BUT, I do think it's a wise move, as I think people are warming up to this generation as a cheap way to get into a Porsche, and nostalgia is kicking in... I hated them when they came out, but now they give me a warm feeling as they remind me how good the early 2000's were, looking back, compared to now!
My dad used to own one of these (as a first owner), it was beautiful and (decently) fast and just perfect condition (after 18 years of owning it there was not even a scratch or a tear in te paint or seats, it even smelled new) ( and yes it was driven)(75k kms)
...and bent valves, and cracked valve guides, and a valve floating on top of a piston.... Sounds great! I think that was crossing the "Questionable Choices" line my friend.
I thought it was likely a Porsche by the shape. Once seeing you uncover it, I see I guessed correctly.
Well done, great work
The roof shape gave it away for me, but the aftermarket nose threw me off a little bit.
DC auto and LA dismantlers are big salvage part dealers. LM enginering will re-sleeve and punch out to 4L if you want reliability and POWER!!! Look up the PCA youtube channel, they have a great series on bore scoring. Fuel in the oil is the key indicator, so sample the oil and borescope the cylinders.
I’m so incredibly invested in this series! Jared is so charismatic and entertaining! Keep up the grind because you deserve it!
During the reveal, i saw the headlights & thought "IMS bearing??" The 996 gets lots of hate but such a sweet car, especially with AWD & a manual. Should be a fun build!
Hate that front bumper 😝 but love the car 👌will enjoy watching the rebuild 😀
That's the ugliest body kit ever !
@thequestionablegarage if you want to get rid of the smoker smell, have a look into getting an ozone generator and running it in the car. Remember to change out the filters too!
You literally described it as an interference engine and it was 100% interfering with itself when started 🤣
I'm impressed with how well you fit in that car, I too suffer from "Will he fit?"
Jared just REALLY wanted to upgrade the valves, hahaha.
A rebuild of a 2.2 l air cooled T engine (carbed) sets you back between $7-10k just in parts. These engines, If you need new cylinders, det you back at least $5k more. There are a few companies re-sleeving the cylinders, but if it is a good idea I’m not sure. I have heard both. If the cylinders aren’t really scored you can though RE-nicasil:ed. And that is pretty unproblematic. I have done a few air cooled Porsche engines and the thing that can’t be said enough is to be picky about parts; Reinz gaskets, Glyco bearings (Reinz have bearings too, but not for all engines), use all the right sealants etc. Make sure to measure everything! Micrometers and bore gauges to measure clearance, no plasti-gauge! Check crank case warping. You have some work ahead! I believe there are some upgrades to the oiling system available, and also the cam transmission has been upgraded so make sure to get the upgraded pieces. Looking forward to this!
Honestly, that's a good looking car. I might like it better than the new ones even with the egg lights.
They’re retro in a good way. They’ve aged a lot better than plenty of other early 2000s sports cars
I love egg lights if they're maintained. I think they got a bad rep mostly because they yellowed so badly. There used to be so many clapped out 996's on the road with headlights that probably felt like sandpaper.
I 'borrowed' one of these cheap scan tools to program a new key for my 2020 MX-5 and it worked great. Returned it to amazon because i didnt really need it day to day, but was amazed that it can do everything the dealer can. Wish i could find the software somewhere because im sure my normal scan tools could access the params theyre working with.
Hey Jared, I started the same project two years ago. I've got a stugart muscle LS adapter kit . Holley Terminator x aluminum 5.3 LS3 intake Brian Tooley stage 3 truck cam .
HIGHLY Questionable choices in this episode.
Good buy, I can’t wait to see how good you turn this Porsche into, hope you keep this one. “I have faith in you Jared”
I love your choice to buy the 996!!! This episode is great and very encuraging. Love to watch the next part! And I wish you to swap this 3,6 320bhp unit for something better, maybe gt3 one??? Thanks and thumbs up!
Jared, you would be the perfect guy, and likely the first to answer this question! If interference motors are set to destroy themselves if the timing chain breaks, why do they continue to make them? I'm certain there are reasons, cost, design, limited hp, I have no idea, but there must be reasons. Please answer them in a vlog! 👍😎✌🗽
P.S. Couldn't wait, I did a quick Google search, and got the answer, but it's still a great piece of information you might want to use in a vlog. I was partly correct, hp is one reason, and efficiency, or gas mileage is another. There may be other reasons as I just did a quick cursory look, and am certainly not an expert on this subject.😁
Just get a full featured scanner. I did end up buying a Thinkcar with one of Ivans promo codes (Pine Hollow Diags) . It's worked well for the mostly domestic stuff I repair and has a lot of adapters for pre ODBII stuff, which I appreciate.
My guess is something with worn through variocam pads. My boxster had that.
The squeak at start is just the starter. Not a problem.
it is a good deal, I got my 1999 996 911 with about the same mileage, Tiptronic, and mine runs and drives, but the engine needs new lifters, one of them knocks badly. And that noise after trying to start it, it's from the starter.
For a runny egg, that thing is pretty. I’m starting to get over the headlights.
Okay, out of all the 'rebuild it' type programs on YT at the moment, I'm looking forward to this one the most. As horrendous as that engine sounded, I think you can rebuild it. Love the car!!! Love the possibilities!!!
Jared: "The cheapest running manual Porsche one the market"
* Tyler Hoover wants to know your location...*
Honestly, I've always had a lot of love for the 996-gen. I know its looks aren't to everyone's tastes but I've always liked that it was distinctive but still a very clean design, and especially the facelift of the runny-egg headlight that got rid of the orange indicator looks good to me.
27:59 the rrrrrrrr noise that you hear is the starer motor not disengaging in time and being forced to continue to spin until it manages to retract. My 1999 volkswagen golf 4 TDI also makes this noise every single time I start it. You can keep the starter motor it will work just fine. Also my golf has an airbag light but it doesn't fix itself.
Can confirm. It's a terrible noise. Sometimes removing the starter, and taking it apart to clean and re-grease the starter gear in the nose of the starter can fix that retraction problem.
In your case, @lupuflamand5673 dig around on the ol' TDIclub forums. There's a good how-to on doing this fix to the starter. No one else can hear your airbag light, so you could even call your car fixed after that! ;)
It'd also be VERY similar for Jared to do with the Porsche too, since it likely just has another model of Bosch starter like most of the German cars tend to have.
When moving an upright piano off of a U-Haul truck once, I told my wife, "If it starts to fall over, let it go." It did. She didn't. Fortunately, she got out of the way before anyone was maimed.
Sometimes letting expensive things break is the cheapest option
@@TheQuestionableGarage I somehow avoided saying "See? I told you-"
And that’s why you are still alive today
I'll admit it has fewer miles than I thought it would, but the second you hit the clear codes button I instinctively made the "Futurama Doubt" face. I'd _at least_ try to look at the timing guide before starting it, if that's even possible. The noise that thing made gave me the sort of reaction you have when a semi runs into a _really_ nice car in it's blind spot... and then you did two more times.
Excited for this series. I haven't dug into a Porsche yet as it's not the most practical car for my area (and roads to the house)
Super happy for you & continue to wish you the best man!!
I appreciate it! Thank
That's a VW starter and the bushing wears out to get the noise. My beetles both did the same thing before replacing them.
Awesome as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
I'm a former smoker, and I hated smoker's cars even when I smoked. I went to great lengths to keep my vehicles clean and to minimize the smell in my vehicles. Some smokers don't care at all. I've seen so many vehicles that were basically rolling ashtrays. So disgusting.
ETS --> Engine Temperature Sensor
SAS --> Steering Angle Sensor
I have an 03 Boxster S and have worked on it extrensively ove rthe last 4 years. The oil is perfect. it has to be between the two lines. IMS bearing and Bore scoring are issues on these cars. The bore scoring happens mostly in colder states. My car doesn't use any oil at 72,500
I am not a big Porschd guy but ivd been looking at Boxsters cuz they are an inexpensive manual RWD 6cyl/over 300hp car to have fun with. Hell nowadays the same era as your Carrerra are cheaper than many comparable Japanese cars, outside of non-manuals or straight line cars or something. Only issue is price of parts
That does sound like broken timing guides. While you have the engine out, change the clutch and install the "IMS Solution" parts so that you will have an oil fed IMS bearing that no one will ever have to worry about again.
Thanks for the tips! It has a upgraded IMS already but it isn’t the external fed ‘solution’
They can be re sleeved too. At least in England. I don't know about here. Can't wait to see the insides. Best of luck.
$10k for a non-ruined manual 996 C4S is an insane deal, even if it does need detailing and timing chain guides
Mothers Odor Eliminator & Refresher car fogger works well to remove cigarette odor, but the car has to be running with the AC on recirculation to work.
2:59. It looks like a C4 corvette but Im half asleep lol
When I worked in the rental industry, we had a utility/maintenance guy who would do the carwashes when all the rental agents were busy... he had an incredible knack for getting car smoke out of cars. I have no idea what dark sorcery he used, but you wouldn't be able to tell at all that a car was smoked in (except for the occasional seat-burn, that he couldn't get rid of without some reupholstering of course...). Kinda wish I did though, so I could share that info with you now... 😅
That's a sick porsche! Can't wait to see what you do with it!
Why doesn’t someone just make a replacement guard and head light to replace the runny egg front end?
Great content, keep up the good work.
Cheers Pat 🇦🇺
Look forward to the adventure. You got this!
oh god, what have you gotten yourself into, Jared. Questionable indeed! Love it, looking forward to the next one!
I wouldn’t say that 3.4 and 3.6 have a “high” IMS failure rate. People are just too paranoid. Yes, there were some but only a very small percentage. Cylinder scoring is a bigger issue imo. The 996 1st and 2nd gen are amazing vehicles. I miss my 996 everyday.
Also 96k ain’t nothing lol. I sold my 996 with 180k on the odometer for premium.
as long as you can get something for the right price, miles are never scary.
996 c4s is dream car for me.
Absolutely congratulations!!!!! Hope you keep and enjoy it!!!!!!!
Those headlights were such an odd design choice. If they had just made them oval this car would be gorgeous.
The look on Jared's face 😂 ....good luck 👍
Just think of how cool a manual awd Porsche will be when its fixed.
Why do I like Jared so much? I can't quite explain it, but I do. Motortrend needs to give this man a TV Show. Also please post driving vids on the dragon once you've fixed the 911 :) Or at least on the road to Helen.
Nah we don’t need TV shows dicking with the schedule or burning Jared out - this is all good, just lots more viewers and higher paying sponsorships such as full build sponsors etc
Sounded like the Jeep guy was saying Porsche last time.
2:42
lol good luck with that engine!
To get rid of that smokers stank, get yourself some ozone treatment for the cabin, that'll clear it out good and proper
Now this is something that I have been waiting on. You work working on another kinda exotic car.
2:40 Porsche 944 Turbo :) since you’re in Georgia, I’d love to see you and Mike Finnegan do something together. He’d probably love earl!
ayyy you werent wrong. You had a banger car coming up. so glad to see this.
"Pull an engine" Do you mean pull what's left? That sounded painful!
Looks beautifull! Always love all your videos jarred i make sure to eatch the sponser videos to support 😁
I appreciate your sentiment to manual transmissions!
unfortunately the cover gave it away, you could clearly see that fender and egg shaped lights with that low wing in the rear. As always, this is going to be another good series.
Yeah I’ve had engines that ran like that before, and they were either windowed, or 3 seconds before. That sounded expensive.
🤣 your best episode ever. I made faces with you while you cranked it. But don’t feel bad, you didn’t hurt it any more than the last few people who cranked it.
Thanks Jared, for liking this comment. I think we are on the same page.
Ahh the strangled chicken sounds when you started it and it stalled 😂😂😂😂such a German car sound 😂
A Diehard dying hard? About as expected as a neverstart never starting. I have an obsession with NAPAs now because of a neverstart.
Jared can’t wait to see this I know you can figure it out and fix it 👍👍👍👍👍
3 pedals are always better than a slush box. Tony Angelo is on some episodes with Mike Finnegan seems like a good guy but he’s ls swapping for a reason.
the end of this episode is one of the best things i've ever seen in YT. Jared, you ROCK mate!!!
Time a 2J 911?????
Looks like it's got a muffler-shop-special, aluminized mild steel, exhaust on it. Porsche used/uses stainless.
I love these Porsches, wish they were cheaper here in Australia. Probably $60k+ for one of these over here i think
Wonder if that 600 scan tool can do the epb reset. Hard to find a budget scanner to reset electric parking brake for simple brake jobs on newer cars
The manual states that yes it can do parking brake resets, I have not done it, but there are a few videos indicating it can. Also the big brother I mention is capable of doing it and I will have a link for it soon too!
On yours and everyone else peddling the Avalon Kings Armor Shield IX, I ordered the bogo from your link and a couple other things. Hope it's as great as it seems. Also, I love your content, I make questionable choices all the time.
I love how well it works. I’m not a Detailer and I get great results with it!
I love the light bar on this gen 4s!
3:18 Porsche or something
Impressive!
Looking better bro! Thanks for the upload!
I LOVE Porsche content! Hopefully soon I'll be picking up a Porsche project car.
I'm curious about how the artidiag pro works. It is about half the price of the launch x431 pro I have been using and looking quickly seems to be about the same. I hope you do an indepth review of it and maybe even compare it to others
I plan to show it way more in depth when I’m able to get the Lexus up to the shop and really tear into it. I can’t directly compare it to others as I frankly don’t have the budget for it, but I can do my best to show you what it can do and how I like it.
Hi Jared nice Porsche and workmanship!!!! It started
Smooth, very smooth reveal 😂
The main noise in the video is the starter motor mine done it for at least 2 years before it failed sticking out and locking engine solid
If you are curious about my Starlet i failed as i used wrong shortblock and ot smokes oil. So i will be using my Tercel on Saturday event. At least i had time to fix it instead. 😅
Starlet will be on the road before summer ends 🤞
It's a lucky thing they didn't say: "Jared, don't line up all your cars in the back lot and try to jump them with the Porsche."
Jared this build gets me excited great content
I felt so uncomfortable when Jared tried to start the engine.
Not joking, I was literally on the edge of my seat, biting my nails (something I almost never do), and not moving a muscle.
I really hope that the engine can be rescued.
Great video my fellow 911 brother 😍
I'm on for this one! The only thing that might slow you u[p much would be Freddie and Jack finally seeing how overmastered they got on the incredibly questionable choice Freddy bought last time!
First thing to repair: Add the e to the Porsch. Then its nearly complet... Greatings from Germany. 😁
I want a "The Questionable Porsche" T-shirt😂
