Jason this is unbelievably the best 20 min lesson I have ever got. invaluable !! I've been struggling to understand all this for so long. I love you !!! you're the best !!!!!!! Thank you
I know I have said this before. The voice over is FANTASTIC, I cannot tell you how much I enjoy your videos especially with VO explaining your thought process.
Jason - another brilliant video from you. You are so down to earth and have a great way of explaining things. I know there are haters out there but please don't apologise for anything and keep doing what you do. Kind regards from the UK.
Layman's terms on why use HSS: 1).It's a bright day 2).You need your model facing away from the sun (no squinting) This creates unsightly shadows which we want to eliminate but we still want to retain a shallow depth of field For a wide aperture we need a fast shutter speed due to the bright conditions Using HSS we can overpower the shadows without losing shallow depth of field and without overexposing the natural light
I see an argument for a slightly expanded depth of field. He was keeping clouds in some focus sometimes and to me the entirety and lasting value of the shot is better this way. However no question about HSS in general. Its great.
Thanks Jason. This vid is a Godsent. I'm a big fan of off-camera-flash and I'm using an A6000, and the info you shared here are priceless. Give me a holler whenever you're in Kuala Lumpur and I'll treat ya :) Thanks again..
Thank you so much for what you do, This is the video I saw 2 years ago that made me rethink my lighting, both for the HS/HSS and lightening my gear in the field; I sold my old PCB Ultras and Bees and went with the Elinchrom Quadra's.....Peace.
We're newbies! Not even native English speakers but everything is very clear and very helpful! I was able to do hss with my t350 and a6000 but when I used my t350 as master and ad200 as slave I can't seem to make hss work. I hope somebody here could direct me on how to do it? But Thank you Jason for all your free videos!
Hi Jason, outstanding as always. I've been researching this and in July will get the Flashpoint Explor 600 monolight, R2 trigger and a PCB Octobox. Just cannot wait!!! thanks for being such an inspiration.
Just a quick question. Plan on having the same setup, but was wondering how to adapt or configure the octobox to the bowens mount on the explor 600. Do you have any ideas?
Come to Tasmania! Joking aside...I LOVE using HSS.. I think everybody should know and understand it if you're charging people money. The more you learn and the more you know the more value you have.. I tend to be a nerd when I love something. I fell in love with photography two years ago and I study every single day. Now after 2 years I'm outshining a lot of local photographers. And they're actually asking me questions on learning new tricks and techniques. Learning high-speed sync is just having another tool in your tool belt
Just getting into a flash photography after a half a year of shooting basically since I got my first Sony A7 series cameras. Thanks for the info Jason. Slowly ...but it's coming along. Cheers brother
Jason, thanks for sharing your thoughts, and giving me, ..I take it personal, ..food for thought when it comes to using flashes and mono lights. After watching the wedding shoot you did on the beach using the Flashpoint rovelight, I decided to get one, and it works nicely. what I didn't realize was that I needed to buy the specific triggers to make it happen. ..I couldn't truly achieve the hss with the triggers it came with. I am truly amazed at how beautiful your pictures come out. ..and I'm determined to make it happen for myself. thanks man for taking the time to make these videos. if you ever come down to Florida, let me know.
HI JASON HOPE YOU DOIN WELL..JUST WANNA KNOW IF WE HAVE TO SWITCH OFF THE ELECTRONIC FIRST CURTAIN TO GET TO HSS IN OUR SONY CAMERAS...THANKS INADVANCE....BIG HUG FROM INDIA.
I really enjoy your videos. I am working to get better with my Flashpoint Zoom R2 TTL Lithium Ion and use it with other speedlights and the R2 Transmitters and receivers. I just wanted to tell you your videos are very appreciated.
Thanks for another great video. I have to go and make some hss shots but with speedlights, because I do not have monolight and am just an enthusiast photographer so will not likely be buying one (or more). I just might be renting them though just to try some things out. Thanks again voor the great videos and for all the info. Keep them coming. :-)
Thank you thank you thank you for the best explanation and demonstration a high speed sync HSS. You're awesome Jason thank you for the great information it is truly making a difference
Jason, you are such a practical and inspiring mentor!!! unlike many of others talking in alien language and shooting shitty photos... Love all your work!!!
wow ur a legend bro I actually lern stuff from u cause I live in Sri Lanka and we don't have many good teachers and I follow ur work and I'm working on moving from Canon to a Sony thanks bro
Ok so I understand the process of HSS and how it works and those photos looks absolutely GORGEOUS but I’d like to know just how much time you spent in photoshop doctoring and tweaking these photos to make them look so amazing because none of those photos are soc if those photos are soc then I most definitely am in need of flying to one of your classes and learning all about making my photos straight outta camera (soc) become awesome amazing beautiful and gorgeous like those you took here.
Jason Lanier I put photo groups together where I live in Des Moines Iowa. About 60-70 people show up to learn how to shoot sunsets and cityscapes but 95% percent of what I know a of lighting subjects comes form watching so many of your videos much more than once. Right now I'm working on a GoFundMe me project to raise money to buy gear for one of the kids who shows up with a really old Nikon camera. Oh just to be clear, I'm not asking for anything but your videos have me just about convinced to scrap the D810 plan for him and get him an a7r2. Heck I might even go that route myself because I keep watching your videos.
Great explanation of HSS in layman's terms. Now I totally understand why a bunch of shots were so overexposed when trying to use my newly acquired f1.8 portrait lens at an outdoor wedding shoot. I will now try to choose a HSS flash for my Nikon D7500... time to research!
If we go a little traditional, we have the trinity: 1. Aperture that controls the DOF and flash exposure on the model, 2. ISO that controls the general sensitivity of the camera, and 3. shutterspeed, that normally controls only the ambient light. But I heard another RUclipsr mention that HSS did something else too. And what is that? I am aware that HSS is a series of flashes that probably gives less Ws than at a normal shot, so you need a bigger flash, recycle times are longer, and it drains the batteries quicker. But I would very much like to know if the old rules have changed with release of HSS. Very nice shots by the way :-)
Many thanks for the education - I have the Sony A6300 and the Godox V860II- Flash with Lithium battery and will now experiment to see if I can get anywhere near what you have shown
OMG, compared to the so-called tutorials offered by the 20 something photographers taking photos of friends this is epic! You not only showed what you do but explained why. Not sure the net is ready for that 😜
It was great, thank you. One question, what song did you play when you start the video with your model, around 15:20 She was great and the inf. Fantastic.
No single flash video has made me want to learn this more... I have a flash, trigger arrives tomorrow, but my flash isn't HSS, which makes me mad, makes me wish I'd ordered one with HSS to start because I know I want THOSE results. Thanks for your videos!
I recently bought that light and it's incredible. I have been using the trigger that it came with and have never had to wait for the next flash since I averaged between 1/64 to 1/128 power but when I bought the new HSS triggers for my camera, it is so inconsistent when it flashes. I know you are a Sony guy but have you seen any videos or info about how to use the new triggers in high speed sync? Thank you for your lessons. I really enjoy watching you create some amazing compositions in places others would run from.
great session and great photos as usual, but no information on what the flash was set at or the camera setting......guess I have to enroll in your class to obtain that information....NP
Great video Jason. Very helpful info. Im sure many didnt know that HYPERsync used 1:1 power. Great model. Loved the voiceover as well. Makes it easier to understand and concentrate on the info. Keep up the great work as always my friend.
@Stephen Soukup, hypersync DOES NOT require one to shoot 1:1 it only requires the power turned up enough to give a long flash duration. Broncolor doesn’t require full power for HS for example, you just have to basically use at least 50% of the flash power, which on location you’re often doing anyway. Inferior lights usually have less options. Other than that, overall Jason’s video is on the money.
I love the way you use artificial light. I didn't think you could shoot a portrait shot with a wide angle lens! Thanks for the high speed sync tutorial, you just gave me something else to think about now.
Hi Jason Thanks for sharing the knowledge with us. You are great artist. Can you please let me know the whitebalance that you use when you mix ambient with flash light for out door shoots. Thanks for help in advance.
Hi Jason. First of all, I'm really a fan of everything you do in photography and the simplicity with which you explain your techniques. Secondly, I would like to know if you work in manual or ttl mode when you photograph in HSS mode? Thank you for your answer !! I'm new with the use of HSS mode in outdoors photography and I would like to understand.
Jason this is unbelievably the best 20 min lesson I have ever got. invaluable !! I've been struggling to understand all this for so long. I love you !!! you're the best !!!!!!!

Shots with and without the flash firing were excellent examples of what HS Sync does! Thanks!
You are welcome!
An excellent explanation of HSS. Thankyou. Much learnt.
This video is right on time! I was just researching how to use HSS and understanding it along with TTL , and BOOM here this video is. Thank you :)
Fascinating stuff. I've been a pro for over forty years, but have never tried this sort of thing. Guess it's time to have a go!
Thank you!
"The People's Photographer!" That has to stick. And yes, you really are. Thank you for another excellent (and informative) video.
Jason you are the bomb! I've learned so much from the two videos I've watced.
You’re not overpowering the sun, you’re underexposing ambient light.
Layman's terms on why use HSS:
1).It's a bright day
2).You need your model facing away from the sun (no squinting)
This creates unsightly shadows which we want to eliminate but we still want to retain a shallow depth of field
For a wide aperture we need a fast shutter speed due to the bright conditions
Using HSS we can overpower the shadows without losing shallow depth of field and without overexposing the natural light
I see an argument for a slightly expanded depth of field. He was keeping clouds in some focus sometimes and to me the entirety and lasting value of the shot is better this way. However no question about HSS in general. Its great.
I so appreciate this summary. I love shallow DOF but never understood it's relationship to HSS til now.
So why wouldnt u use 1/4000th instead to expose properly?
@@snipex111 Your subject would be too dark in most cases and you'd lose the detail that you'd have with
a flash ....
Clear simplified explanation about high speed sync and Hypersync flash photography great. Thanks Jason
Simple and straight to the point, thanks Jason.
You're so accurate! Still actual..... amazing results!
An extremely comprehensive and direct video. Thank you Jason
