- High-speed sync flash or HSS flash as it’s commonly called is an incredibly useful tool for achieving multiple tasks. This advanced flash feature has evolved over the years to become as easy to use as simply pressing a button but if you’re about to try it for the first time, this video is essential viewing.
Before photographer Gavin Hoey takes you through the basics of HSS he explains why high-speed sync flash matters in a small home studio. In this case, it’s all about working with wide apertures to achieve a shallow depth of field and as Gavin demonstrates, it’s important to understand both why you need HSS and when it can help.
Gavin then takes you through his three-step HSS flash process. Starting with underexposing the room lights he then turns on the high-speed sync feature on his Flashpoint transmitter and finishes working out the correct flash power by taking a test photo or two.
Adding a second HSS flash isn’t a problem and Gavin finishes his photo session by doing just that. With the help of a blue gel to differentiate the flashes, Gavin is able to set up a multi-flash, high-speed sync photo session in no time at all.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - Хобби
Full salutations to Gavin and Adorama team for creating such wonderful learning videos.
Man, can't believe I've been watching Gavin for atleast 8 years now and he's been so helpful in my photography journey . From the lightroom tutorials to in studio sessions. Here's to more videos !!
Thanks for the long term support 👍
Same here.
I need sleep, watching all night your video's. They are so great.
A lovely model, a teacher that always seems to be in good mood and explains everything in a seemingly easy and almost playful way, what more can we ask for 😊
Thanks a lot Gavin and the whole team 🙏
You can never go wrong with Chloe as a model. I love everything in Gavin's small home studio.
Gavin's lessons are incredible, hes got such an easy going personality and knows how to explain things in a way that can be easily understood. Most of everything ive learned about photography has been because of him. Thank you!
As always the best teacher on youtube
I can only say a big thank for your wonderful tutorials ! Full of kindness and inspiration !
Thank you Gavin for the refresher. Love your tutorials, always!
I just am amazed with you out of the box creativity Gavin, you inspire me to don’t think just do, thx for all you do!
Another great vid with step-by-step guides to get the most out of your lights and a small studio space.
Thanks, Gavin, for another informative video, & for helping reinforce situations using HSS. Especially loved the background set-up when using the 2nd light, & the post-edits, too. Chloe is a wonderful model. So expressive. Keep these tutorials coming!
Love what you've created for the background. And always, the step by step process & reasoning for HSS. Thank you!
Thanks Vickie 👍
Another outstanding tutorial as always Gavin 👍
You're so thorough man! Thank you! I will owe you forever
Fantastic, Thank you Gav and Chloe. Chloe is such a great model !
Thank you Gavin and Chloe. This was just something I became more curious about for some reason a couple of days ago. Thanks for the great explanations.
Hello, Gavin. Greetings from Charleston, SC. I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to you and Sam. I began my portrait photography journey about six months ago. Your videos have provided invaluable guidance. Thank you, and best wishes to you, Sam, and all the models!
Excelente explicación Gavin, siempre aprendo algo nuevo con tus consejos. Excelente te felicito.
A good explanation of why you might use HSS indoors, just as you might use it outside to control bright ambient at wide apertures. One thing to note is that with some systems, HSS switches in automatically. With my Canon, as soon as I go above the native sync speed of 1/200 sec, the flash starts to use HSS without me setting it on either the transmitter or light.
Love this shoot, the colours and the DIY background looks so cool
this was fantastic Gavin, thank you for making this hss vid! the B/G paper squares look pretty cool too, very creative idea and looks good with the hit of color as well 👍🏼👍🏼
The hand waving ambient light thing explained it all for me, thank you Gavin!
So glad that helped Jay 👍
Gaven thanks for sharing, enjoyed the simple explanation and lighting setup. This video shared how you can create awesome images with a few simple tools.
I was playing with HSS a few weeks ago to learn how to use it. This was really helpful, it explained some things that I hadn't reasoned out very well. (Loved the gel colour!). Thanks for the lesson.
Another awesome video!!! Thank you!!!
Congrats to everyone on a super informative video. Love the background idea - super ! Chloe is charming, as always, and loving the volume in her hair - well captured, Gavin. Take care, all.
Thanks Alan. I couldn't bare to bin some perfectly good paper and you can hardly see the footprints on it 😁
Great Demo! Thanks Gavin,Chloe, Sam and Freya 😎👍🇨🇦
Thanks Alan 👍
That background is so clever! Ah Gavin, you're always inspiring!
Thanks Nina. Simple, effective and 100% recycled... the perfect background :)
It's always very interesting to watch your demonstrations. Also loved the paper background.👍
Thank you. The paper background turned out all right 😁
Great job Gavin ! And happy new year ! Thanks for this tutorial. Some of the pics you took there were so good that I would like to see them post processed.
Great informative 10mins Gavin, very useful photography content.
Thanks Jon 👍
Nice job, great inventive background smashing!
Fantastic video and beautiful photos. We are all earning so much from you 👌🏼 thanks 😊
Thank you. This was great.. added to my favorites
Always great thank you
As always, get video!!! Thank you! Happy Holidays!!!!!
Great*** not get** LOL!!
Thank you Gavin
That's such a great idea! 👍
Nice idea on the background, Gavin, and great job, Chloe. Lovely results!
Thanks Mike. It was nice to give a beat up background one last outing 🙂
Tip:
If you're using a flash that doesn't have HSS, use a variable neutral density filter (VND) to darken the exposure without cranking the shutterspeed above the normal sync speed limit.
I think this advice would be useful to a lot of beginner photographers who don't have the marching flashes and transmitters yet. Also good as a backup method I'm case gear fails.
fantastic, as usual..............
Fantastic video Gavin! I just bought a couple of flashes with HSS. This is such great info!
Perfect timing Stephen 👍
Brilliant background! I seen the Insta posts first and was like "how'd Gavin do that?" 🤔🔥👍🏼
fabulous video Gavin and Chloe. ive got a flashpoint 400 xplor so i should be right on with this.
i love your background. great idea!
Love this tutorial! I've never tried HSS in the studio. Definitely going to try this!
Go for it Jamil, it's a useful tool to have up your sleeve!
I was just thinking the same thing. I haven't tried HSS in the studio either but I will give it a try. Thanks @Gavin
I love your videos. This was also a very usefull for me! Thanks🙏🏻
Love your work
Great content today Gavin....hello from New York!!
Thanks Rick 👍
u r a great teacher gavin
i luv u boss
Another great video. Never used HSF indoors, but I can see why your would. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Andy. It's a handy thing to have in your lighting tool bag :)
Loved it
Kreative Ideen mit viel know how, witzig und informativ 👍
Super idea to use old background paper to make a different background.
Thanks Kenneth 👍
THANKYOU
best. Ever.
Love Gavin and his awesome tutorials! I am definitely a huge fan! However, my friend is not amused when every time I introduce her, I have to say " this is the amazing Chloeeee!"😆
Thanks Mickey and my apologies to your friend 😉
Cool idea for a background!
Thanks Randy 👍
Awesome video, Sir. I love the idea that you recycle the old background paper for texture rather than throw it away. T.Y. model and crew. Happy Holidays!
Hi Michael. First time I've done this particular look with background paper but not the first time I've recycled paper in a session 😉
I really like this photo shoot And using hss
#goals. Just received my ad200 yesterday. Best Christmas gift EVER. I cannot wait to get an R2 family speedlight so i can do something similar
A speedlight and the EVOLV200 (AD200) is a great combo Cory 👍
@@GavinHoey at the moment an ad300 or even another ad200 is out of my budget, but seeing what you did when you added the blue gel to the backround light, the results inspired me to want to try the same. Plus, the awesome d.i.y backdrop. Very great content in this video.
I want to be Gavin Hoey when I grow up! 😊
Another information packed video from Gavin Hoey.
Can I just mention Chloe ? Even in the test shots she hits a pose. Must be a dream to work with
Straight Point 🤟
Thanks a bunch for this very informative and inspirational video, Gavin.
Just wondered.... is there any reason I would not just leave the HSS active in my trigger radio at all times? Even when using shutterspeeds at or below sync speed.
Great video Gavin
Thanks Kirsty 👍
@@GavinHoey your welcome 🙏
I do like your background
Nice 🤝😎
you are genius
Thanks again Gavin for yet another great video - as always very inspiring. I know you can't use your flash meter to read the flash power when using HSS, but if you had used TTL would the TCM button on your trigger still work for HSS?
Yes it would, although there's no preset for the 300ws flash. BTW I cover TCM here ruclips.net/video/iqtfVvIIbmc/видео.html
Thanks for packing so much useful education into yet another great video, Gavin! Shooting in HSS is fun, and can give results not otherwise available.
I have a question about one small point you mentioned in this video (at 9:00)? Regarding freezing motion via short flash duration: At or below sync speed yes, the flash pulse is much faster than the shutter. But the way I understand HSS, the flash pulses quickly to fill in the entire frame since the shutter is basically a small slit passing over the sensor. So in fact, aren't we lighting the frame during the entire shutter exposure? Doesn't that put us back to controlling motion blur via shutter speed, because the flash effectively becomes a constant light source when we use HSS?
Keep the videos coming! There are so many things to learn. I'm off to go play with HSS now, and some kind of DIY background... :)
Hello Gavin.
I really liked the video and very interesting.
A question.
You could also do this if you don't have the HSS flash.
Also, if possible, how to connect the camera to the tablet to see the photos directly.
Thanks.
Which light meter are you using. This. video. is. GOLD! Profoto system auto sync with high speed shutter systems used on Sony. Regardless love the brand diversity and exactly what you present. Spot on!!!!!
That MUSIC THOUGH!!!
What are the names of those tracks?
Good show Gavin.
Have you ever done a video on Chiaroscuro Lighting?
Would love to see your take on it.
I have a noob question.. how did you manage to see and focus on the model when the test shot for ambient light is complete darkness?
Great video and do you need to keep the modelling light off for HSS?
Really good question. The unhelpful but true answer is... It depends on your camera settings. The honest answer is... I keep the modelling light on as much as possible.
Excelent video!
2 questions:
1) when I do hss outside sometimes I overhead my speed lights. Any solution?
2) are you using an iPad as tethering device. I wanna learn how to use mine.
Thanks!
Excellent video, Gavin! I have a question about the shutter speed. How did you arrive at 4,000 to start?
Is it better to use the flash along side a soft box or one or the other?
I forget to switch to HSS when needed almost as much as Gavin forgets to turn on the lights :D
So that's very rarely and only when a camera is pointed at you. Right Brian 😉
@@GavinHoey I think of you at least once a session because I do it too... at least once per session 😆
Gavin how did you make that background? is it just Grey paper? Love the hss guide I will be using going forward.
One note that you don't consider is that by increasing the flash power from 1/16 to 1/8... you now see the back drop !?...
only an issue if like for me sometimes,I like to eliminate back ground clutter !🤔
Hi Gavin. Very nice Video. What Equipment (display, Software)do you use for tethering?
Model 💓
Well done, lots of tips and tricks. What size is your studio? ( LxWxH)
H
i Alistair. On a good day 15'x15'x8' but on a filming day a lot less when all the cameras are in or I'm doing something like this
ruclips.net/video/40AQWf7t4CE/видео.html
I really like your video. and I also followed the instructions. If there is more Vietnamese language, it would be great
When I have switched to HSS in the studio, I have liked the results, but the colors seem to change a bit (same lights, same modifiers). I use Flashpoint lighting. Any reason why this might be happening?
Hi Stephen. All flashes (not just Flashpoint) have a colour shift as the power changes although some are more obvious then others. A single HSS flash is actually lots of lower powered flashes in a fraction of second, so that might be why you see a colour shift. A grey card photo only take a moment and will sort you right out 😉
hi, what do you use for the tether? the cable is ok but i mean the app and if it is for android. thanks!
Dear Adorama,
please can you reupload the last ON SET Daniel Norton Video (black and white)?!
Thank you Gavin for this very helpful video!
i use hss ( sony a7iii vs godox v860ii ) but when i set the lamp wattage below 1/32 i don't get any motion. Pressing the trigger on the camera shows a delay. is there any way to fix it? thank you
Thank you Gavin. I wish you had done the hand movement again instead of the hair tosses. I think the point was made but the proof is in the pudding.
another great Video 🥰 but f1.4 on MFT its like f2.8 on full frame. I think this should work without HSS 🤔
Диафрагма - это относительная величина , на любом формате f1.4 будет одинаково влиять на экспозицию. Разница только в глубине резкости.
Gavin have tried this but when I go above 1/250 on my Fuji XS10 I see nothing through the view finder or rear screen (just black) but on the video you can see the model
Отключите в настройках камеры имитацию экспозиции.
What application do you use to display the images in this way on the iPad or Android?
Gavin, any special reason that you’re using the square softbox instead the octa?
Hi Elton. My favourite Glow octabox has been discontinued :(
However if you only have one softbox, the 3'x2' is a great choice, as I explained here ruclips.net/video/MlAnhwVImMA/видео.html
No mention about focal plane X-sync speed and how HSS gets round that? Was that on purpose or an oversight?
If anyone knows the names of the instrumentals in this videos, please let me know!
They are GREAT!
My shutter is flickering in HSS with the flashpoint trigger
Great video Gavin, but your comment at 9mins, saying that the short flash duration is doing the freezing, is incorrect. When you’re in HSS your flash is acting as a continuous light, so it is in fact ONLY the shutter speed doing the freezing when you use HSS.
What is that screen you are tethered too?
That's my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 tablet / Laptop.
I would love to see a video on your tether set up!
@@GavinHoey Great thank you. I've been looking at tablets for this purpose. A windows based machine makes sense now. Being able to run standard programs like capture one & LR that accept tethering.
