- If you’re wondering how to make ripple-like reflections for your next portrait sessions, Mylar is what you need. This amazing material is super shiny, easy to store, and endlessly reusable making it the perfect choice for small home studios.
With a floor area of just 8 feet by 8 feet, photographer Gavin Hoey attempts to create amazing reflective portraits with Mylar in the smallest of temporary studio spaces. He takes you on a journey that starts with the essential skills to best light Mylar for reflections showing how making your light larger or smaller will make the reflections sharper and softer.
Finally, Gavin adds a splash of color to his images. He explains that you can recreate this effect by altering your camera's white balance or adding colored gels to your flash. To add more variety and vibrance, Gavin adds pearlescent "holographic" film between the flash and the Mylar.
Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008, he started recording and uploading video tutorials to RUclips. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites, and videos.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! Хобби
Gavin is simply the best. Not only does he take good photos with simple set up, but also the fact that he never pretends to be the one who show off the most expensive equipment like a lot of mediocre RUclipsrs these days.
Your enthusiasm is always infectious Gavin. Thanks for another cracking tutorial 👍
I’m starting to fall for Sophie 😍 I love your videos because I learn a lot, but Sophie always stills the show 🥰
Brilliant in it's simplicity and creativity, great tutorial video as always, I am looking forward to the next one!
Best photography teacher out there.
Always a great idea which gives us inspiration to try. Thank you Gavin and Sophie looks great as always!
This shoot was really cool with the possibilities of lights, colors and shadows
Congrats and many thanks Gavin. What an absolutely excellent video. You're simply the best!
You keep coming up with fantastic lighting concepts and great ideas. Thanks for sharing and love all your videos.
incredible how low cost these effects are! thank You Gavin for this amazing video :)
Great video! I can't wait to try this. Thanks Gavin!
Interesting effects without significant expense. But experience is vital. Thank you for sharing!
Yep, experience is always priceless 👍
I’ve been using Mylar on my last few shoots but you just opened my eyes to new ways to use the Mylar!!! Wow!!
Hope to see another course next week. Great idea showing accessories to strobe.
Awesome!! I’ve got a tiny space (section of my living room) so this is awesome
I totally did this for you Biggie 😂
Simple idea but great impact, I just loved it... let me play with that . Thanks and much appreciated for your efforts.
I played with mylar - but the color foil you added ... nailed it ..wow
brilliant idea and work, Gavin … and Sophie - as always - done really great! 😍
Thank you 😊
Love it! I'm always so excited to see a new video tutorial from Gavin!
Gav… these are some of the most stunning shots you’ve done lately! Googling holographic paper now…
Thanks Terry 👍
Great. Gavin. Is amazing how your tech very simple... thanks
I will try this afternoon, thanks
Fantastic as always, Gavin 👍
I was watching your videos long before your relationship with Adorama. I never cease to be amazed by your creativity. Give my best to Sam! We have an expression here in the US. You outkicked your coverage. I'll let you figure out what that means! You've become welcome guest in my home!
Thanks for the long term support and I'm honoured 😊
Great video Gavin.
A very cool underwater kind of feel with the blue shifted color balance and the mylar. I've seen a photographer in my area put either mylar or a similar down on the floor and bounce the light down into it and have the model lying on the floor for a mermaid type look.
Hi John. Mylar does a great job of creating that underwater vibe 👍
Thoroughly enjoyed watching, thanks again Gavin and the team involved. I can put this idea to many uses, I just need to get some pearlescent/holographic film or tulle might work as well.
Top shelf Gavin just wow❤😊
Super video. Loved the light colours and the dress. Sophie even looked great when covered in yellow light ! Well done!
Thanks Alan. Sophie's dress was the perfect match. I'd love to take the credit for that but that was 100% Sophie 😉
Thank you so very much! That was fun, fabulous. & informative 👍🏻
Very inspiring ! And Sophie is as gorgeous as ever ;)
We like your creative ideas! Thanks.
Thanks John 👍
another fabulous & creative video, many thanks...
Playing with colours reflected by Mylar is amazing. Thanks for this great video Gavin.
You're most welcome 👍
That is amazing. What a great combination!
Thanks Pete 👍
Super creative ❤ Thanks Gavin!
I always watch most of Gavin videos since it has great tips. I want thank Gavin, team, and Adorama for the videos.
Fantastic lighting ideas! Thanks Gavin!
I always enjoy and learn from your videos, but as someone who loves colours, this one's definitely a favourite.
It was certainly one of my more colourful sessions 😁
Beautiful results, Gavin and Sophie!
Great, sir u are amazing skills, in photography❤
Thanks yet again for an excellent lighting demonstration and explanation. Gavin Hoey , my photography Sensei!
Great video! I’m always learning something new and fun from Gavin Hoey’s videos!
Glad I've been of help Michael 👍
Crazy. I just bought a roll of this a month ago and here you are with a demo. Perfect timing!
Thank you Sir ! As usual, simple, clear, fun and full of knowledge.
I Always enjoy your skills and creativity Gavin. Thank you
Great video and great show you must be exhausted
When you're doing something you genuinely enjoy I find the energy just keeps on coming 😁
I did not know that Mylar stuff... One more thing to buy and try! 🤣🤣

Fantastyczny pomysł, bardzo ciekawe efekty (y)
Good as usual gavin.
This was awesome! Another one for the mood board.
Excellent concept and video. 🐯
Brilliant! Inspiring! I have to try this!
Great video as always - amazing what can be done in small space. Love the colours.
The king of photography
Disfruto mucho como haces las fotos, un abrazo desde Chile.
🤗
So inspiring!
Great tips, Gavin. I'm going to try some in my next shoot. I've used the aluminized Mylar on the floor to get water-like reflections of the model, but I've never used it like this.
I’ve been waiting for this one for weeks! Since you teased it on instagram (I think).
Yep, my Instagram stories is like a secret window into the future 😉
Hmm, good source of inspiration. Shooting in the studio with a model that would like me to use my optical snoot and gobos at the end of the month. This might provide some other variations on a theme. Great stuff, as always.
Very creative, as usual
Amazing!
Sophie, Charlott and Chloe are all beautiful by nature. But Gavin enhances their beauty 10-fold.
Gavin have you ever decided to do a shoot with 2 of your models or all 3 of them together?
Thanks for the kind words. A multi model session would be amazing. You never know, keep watching.
@@GavinHoey Thanks Gavin. I have been following you for at least 4 years. Thanks for everything you do. Love your energy and talent.

Very cool idea...
Always creative !😊
Some really good creatives here in FL just did some really neat images using mylar. Definitely a great product to have on hand for a photographer.
Gavin, very interesting!👋👋👋
Loved the video 🙂👍
you people are very helpful everytime, thumb up for Adorama
I've been trying to figure out what that holographic paper material was called for years, moreso recently trying to recreate something for a light painting idea. Thank you so much for inadvertently solving another mystery!
Fantastic tip on generating fabulous colors with simple lighting and props. Now, if I can just find a model this beautiful.
Sophie is amazingly talented Billy and available for hire 😉
@@GavinHoey I’m afraid you’ve spoiled her. She knows she’s getting world class images from you. Mine would be hit and miss.
I never comment, however I really loved this video! Very well done.
Thanks for the comment and the kind words George 😊
Great!
very good! thank you sir
Very knowledgeable episode, thank you sir
I love your videos. They are incredibly creative and I learn a lot from them.
Even just for those who have photography as a hobby and to photograph family and friends, as is my case.
Many congratulations for such generosity in sharing your knowledge and for the fun and light way in which you do so. 😊
Thanks for the kind words 😊
If you don't have an assistant, you can point a small desk fan at the mylar sheet to ripple it also
Good shout 👍
I'd love to get some Mylar, there's fun to be had with it! Hope everything went well at the Photography Show. 🙂
What a great video! I have a shoot coming up next week where I want to really push the color. I was thinking about using aluminum foil + a gel but I'll definitely give this a go as well. Thanks for the inspiration!
Have a great session 👍
@@GavinHoey Thanks Gavin 🙂
