- Adding colored gels to your next portrait shoot is a simple way to create photos with immediate impact. From vibrant splashes of color to subtle pastel tones, gels on flashes can create a wide variety of stunning effects that we don’t see with our own eyes.
Before you get started with gels there are some key points to get right and that’s where photographer Gavin Hoey comes in. In this video, he coves the essential tips and tricks for getting the best results from your gels. Gavin starts with the basics such as how to correctly cover a flash with a gel and how to set up your camera for colored gel photography.
There are many, many ways to use gels in a studio photoshoot and Gavin covers two of the most popular here. First, he turns a plain grey background into a wall of vibrant red. Next, he steps it up to a more advanced lighting technique by using two different colors of gel to light his model and create some amazing and colorful ¾ length portraits.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING! - Хобби
Every time I finish watching a Gavin video, I feel so confident to try.
Gavin for president🤣🤣 i swear i have watched almost every gavin hoey adorama presentation there is to watch
Hi Lian. That's a lot of videos! Thanks for the support 👍
@@GavinHoey I did the same. 😂
Gavin is only THE BEST!!!
I believe some people are gifted to be teacher and you are one of the best teachers in photography. After years of doing amateur photography and watching your full of passion, fun and joy videos, I decided to stablish my little home studio here in New Zealand. I always appreciate your sense of humour and I am sure Adorama, models and all your colleagues enjoy working with you.
The multi-colour gel images look fantastic!
Gavin!!!!! Super excited to always see your tutorials
Love the colored silhouette. Will add to the to-do list! Thanks for making things look easy and giving us confidence to try new things.
Go for it Mark. It's a great one light set-up to have in your lighting tool bag 😉
Wow! Great model, great posing, great lighting tutorial, and, great photographer. You are the best!
Thank you Gavin!
Very nice and dramatic results, Gavin. It looks like you and Chloe had a fun time creating the poses, too. Always a pleasure to watch you work, Gavin!
Thanks Mike. We had a great time shooting these. The last set was a bit different for both of us which is always exciting.
Always love your videos... thank you for sharing !
Absolutely gorgeous shots. Obviously, I leave my gels in the bag far too often! Chloe made a huge impact on this shoot in that I noticed her sweeping motion position adjustments put her in poses somewhat more exaggerated than usual. And that, combined with your Gel effects made great shots! Learn from Gavin. Learn from Chloe. The double whammy of the Hoey approach! Thanks for creating this video! ⭐x5
Thanks for the kind words, you're spot on about working with the right model. All the pre-planning meant Chloe knew the look I was after and had the skills to make the tricky awkward and angular poses look effortless.
I been watching Gavin for a while. Great instructor.
Gavin, your videos are the most interesting photography content on the internet. Thank you!!
I love your work, Gavin!
Gavin...luv your tuts and your style man...keep 'em coming!
I just did this today in my first ever studio shoot. It was awesome. I shot it tethered as well. Everything worked well, and thanks to your videos, I was able to build up to the final images, and get good results.
Thanks for being an amazing teacher.
You are amazing Gavin! Even though you didn't know it, you've been such a great mentor for me.
Oh yes, fabulous images as always Gavin and a great model too 👍
Another great demo. The silhouette was the best one. Thanks Gavin, Chloe and Sam! 😎👍🇨🇦
My first shots were my best shots, I hear you Alan 😉
Very nice video, I think the big tip in this video is make sure your studio is dark for only the gel color is the light on the model, you will not get it to work well if there is to much white light or day light in the studio! Great end results!
But remember you can do a lot of that with the camera. First shot, no flash, no picture.
As always you crushed it. Fantastic tutorial
Gavin Sir Always makes It Fun to learn 😄♥️
Always make me amazed, great video Gavin 🤩
The orange and blue combine to create an interesting metallic look, almost alien-like. Really cool.
Thanks Rick 👍
I have so been waiting for a good beginning gel video! Thank you so much!
Thanks Stephen, I hope it was helpful 👍

Great job as always. I love your work Gavin. Greetings from Poland
Thanks Kris 👍
I have never gotten gels to work right, and this video has given me the inspiration to test tonight!
Very useful tip , colour showing in dark areas only, it was like i was using this fact but never knew it.
Thanks for sharing such great content, 👍🏻👍🏻
Really like to thank you for showing me how to narrow my lighting
Well done and explained + Beautiful Chloe 😊

I loved the tips...
I love it¡¡¡¡¡ great work¡¡¡
I love using gels in my shoots when I can, especially at night.
Amazing stuff!
So beautiful model
Thanks Gavin - a great video! I love the post-process bit at the end - really simple tweaks to get that lovely shine on Chloe's skin. I thought she might have had skin oil on to enhance the shine, but maybe not?
interesting how the intensity of the backlight can change the color value behind the silhouette. Thanks for some great education! Time to experiment.
This was so good
Love it
why does he always make it look so easy hahaha
Thank you!
You're welcome Ted 👍
Nicely done!
Gavín you are the best (muy bella la modelo)
Beautifuly done ✅
MÁSTER! 🙌🏻
Very cool as usual Gavin
Thanks Jeff 👍
Nice! I'm literally going out to do a shoot on location with gels this afternoon, so this is a good refresher!
Have a great shoot Shannon 👍
@@GavinHoey Hi Gavin. Can you tell me what kind of tablet you are tethering to, and through which software? Thanks.
Im going to make a own "small home studio". How about an update on yours?
Your videos are the main inspiration for building my own.
Excellent
tnx adorama for this cours
Good video thanks...
I sense some Lindsay Adler here 😉, she loves to play with gels. Seriously, great job from all of you and very well explained 👍. But than we’ve come to expect great explanations from you, that’s what happens when someone constantly raises the bar of the years like you’ve done. Thanks a lot for all these truly amazing videos 🙏
Gavin, Thank you for another excellent and instructive video. I learn so much from watching your process especially when the results are not what you expected at first. You are an excellent teacher and presenter. Thank you. Quick question. Is it possible to gel a white background effectively or will the color be washed out?
Super Cool
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
- Swole Beast🤙🏽🙏🏽✌🏽
Dear brilliant Gavin, can't tell you how great you really are .. I wonder if you could do a video on Hollywood glamour, the kind of photography people have forgotten. I personally consider this kind of portraits is the most wonderful photography. Thank you.
I'll add it to the list Muhammad. In the meantime, try this video from last week ruclips.net/video/YW5EyNskxtM/видео.html
amazing :)
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 + Go Chloe
Hi Gavin,
First off all, congratulations for the great videos you have done. It's always a pleasure to see them. 🤩
You always use the two covering on your softbox?
Sorry for the basic question 😉
Loved the silhouettes and using inverse square rule to preserve colour. Post processing ideas good to know. Well done to all involved !
Thanks Alan. Secret top bonus tip. You can skip a lot of the inverse square law bits and some of the post processing by changing just one thing... getting a MUCH bigger studio 😉
Thanks Gavin. I learn a lot. I can't wait to explore. Please what's the other gel you used. The longer one?
You do a great job explaining and going from step to step. I'm going to try this process in my studio today and see if I can accomplish this! Best tip-Cover the entire light with the gel. One question- Q. Can the gel work on a stand alone speedlite or does it have to be a strobe light?
