I believe some people are gifted to be teacher and you are one of the best teachers in photography. After years of doing amateur photography and watching your full of passion, fun and joy videos, I decided to stablish my little home studio here in New Zealand. I always appreciate your sense of humour and I am sure Adorama, models and all your colleagues enjoy working with you.
Absolutely gorgeous shots. Obviously, I leave my gels in the bag far too often! Chloe made a huge impact on this shoot in that I noticed her sweeping motion position adjustments put her in poses somewhat more exaggerated than usual. And that, combined with your Gel effects made great shots! Learn from Gavin. Learn from Chloe. The double whammy of the Hoey approach! Thanks for creating this video! ⭐x5
Thanks for the kind words, you're spot on about working with the right model. All the pre-planning meant Chloe knew the look I was after and had the skills to make the tricky awkward and angular poses look effortless.
Very nice video, I think the big tip in this video is make sure your studio is dark for only the gel color is the light on the model, you will not get it to work well if there is to much white light or day light in the studio! Great end results!
Dear brilliant Gavin, can't tell you how great you really are .. I wonder if you could do a video on Hollywood glamour, the kind of photography people have forgotten. I personally consider this kind of portraits is the most wonderful photography. Thank you.
Out of all of the Adorama teachers I've seen, you, Gavin Hoey, ate the best. I just love your energy and how your teaching style. Can Gels be cut to match a flash's output? And do they not have a risk of melting? Thank you!
I just did this today in my first ever studio shoot. It was awesome. I shot it tethered as well. Everything worked well, and thanks to your videos, I was able to build up to the final images, and get good results. Thanks for being an amazing teacher.
since two days i am trying to learn about gel photography and i couldn´t find any attachment for bowsens mount with the color gel. know i learn from the video tape is my best friend :D
I find a lot of inspiration in your video's. Not only are they clear, but they also work with typical small studio spaces, making it realistic for home use.
Thanks Alan. Secret top bonus tip. You can skip a lot of the inverse square law bits and some of the post processing by changing just one thing... getting a MUCH bigger studio 😉
Thanks Gavin - a great video! I love the post-process bit at the end - really simple tweaks to get that lovely shine on Chloe's skin. I thought she might have had skin oil on to enhance the shine, but maybe not?
Hi Gavin and team. A wonderful video, as always🙏. Please, I had a question, what size are the stripboxes? Forgot to put info&links to buy in the description.. Thank you so much!
I havent seen Gavin in a while and he looks bit different, still same energy tho the model looks like shes enjoying the shoot, and everything is looking stunning, I love shooting with gels, I'm glad that we have links to the products, But my question if anyone can answer it, what kind of screen or table is being used to display the images tethered, also how is on a stand? Thanks
Hi Nicoló. Although I have quite a few LED's for video in the studio AND I've tried many LED's for stills photography, I'm still slightly sceptical about LED's for general portraits. They're just not as bright as flash, so I have to crank up the ISO or open the aperture, or slow the shutter. The brighter they are the less comfortable it is for the model to work in them and their pupils close down as the light levels goes up. There's also a rhythm to flash that I don't always get with LED's. Good models know to change pose after each flash and that gets lost with LED. However... None of the above is a good enough reason to NEVER use LED for portraits and I'm ALWAYS looking for better options, so watch this space 😉
@@GavinHoey Thanks Gavin for the answer and I find your considerations absolutely right, which is why I was looking for suggestions on this from an expert like you. I stay connected and thanks to all the Adorama staff 🤗
I sense some Lindsay Adler here 😉, she loves to play with gels. Seriously, great job from all of you and very well explained 👍. But than we’ve come to expect great explanations from you, that’s what happens when someone constantly raises the bar of the years like you’ve done. Thanks a lot for all these truly amazing videos 🙏
Whenever I need ideas or inspiration I come to you or joe Edelman! I shoot with Sony mostly BUT I recently purchased some Olympus gear! Keep on pumping out the great content!
@@GavinHoey oh that I realize. I do like the features of Olympus cameras. Not to mention the system is lighter. When doing air shows it’s like lifting weights with my 200-600 and 100-400
@@curtisclement Ah right, airshows. Now there's a superb example of when what camera you use really DOES matter and OM System (Olympus) has a big little advantage 😁
You do a great job explaining and going from step to step. I'm going to try this process in my studio today and see if I can accomplish this! Best tip-Cover the entire light with the gel. One question- Q. Can the gel work on a stand alone speedlite or does it have to be a strobe light?
Wow. Fantastic video. The production values seem to have gone up a few notches. Moving video cameras, up beat music, it all looks and sounds great. Of course still full of inspirational ideas.
Gavin, Thank you for another excellent and instructive video. I learn so much from watching your process especially when the results are not what you expected at first. You are an excellent teacher and presenter. Thank you. Quick question. Is it possible to gel a white background effectively or will the color be washed out?
Hi Gavin! Great video! Two questions: 1) do you have any tips/recommendations for using gels with continuous lights like 100W Led Cob lights 2) any tips on getting Capture One for iPad to tether? (It rarely works for me using my X-T5)
Gavin for president🤣🤣 i swear i have watched almost every gavin hoey adorama presentation there is to watch
Hi Lian. That's a lot of videos! Thanks for the support 👍
@@GavinHoey I did the same. 😂
Gavin is only THE BEST!!!
I'll vote for him!!!!
Every time I finish watching a Gavin video, I feel so confident to try.
Chloe seemed like a fun model to work with!

Terrific as always and Chloe ever the professional model.
Wow!!!! Amazing photos !!!! Love it .
Glad you like our video! Hope it helps you with your future shoots 😊
The orange and blue combine to create an interesting metallic look, almost alien-like. Really cool.
Thanks Rick 👍
The multi-colour gel images look fantastic!
A true legend. If you know, you know.

For the algorithms...also for Gavin. Lovely as always.
Wise words indeed Mr Keene and I'll add to that line of thought with this reply 😁
interesting how the intensity of the backlight can change the color value behind the silhouette. Thanks for some great education! Time to experiment.
YOU ARE THE BEST !!!
as always a pleasure Sir
Very nice video, I think the big tip in this video is make sure your studio is dark for only the gel color is the light on the model, you will not get it to work well if there is to much white light or day light in the studio! Great end results!
But remember you can do a lot of that with the camera. First shot, no flash, no picture.

I'll add it to the list Muhammad. In the meantime, try this video from last week ruclips.net/video/YW5EyNskxtM/видео.html
I love using gels in my shoots when I can, especially at night.
You read my mind! Just last night, I was thinking it would be nice to watch a good video about using gels in photoshoots! 🙂
Really like to thank you for showing me how to narrow my lighting
Gavin!!!!! Super excited to always see your tutorials
Very nice and dramatic results, Gavin. It looks like you and Chloe had a fun time creating the poses, too. Always a pleasure to watch you work, Gavin!
Thanks Mike. We had a great time shooting these. The last set was a bit different for both of us which is always exciting.
I’m really happy found this channel… ! AWESOME!
Im going to make a own "small home studio". How about an update on yours?
Your videos are the main inspiration for building my own.

Very useful tip , colour showing in dark areas only, it was like i was using this fact but never knew it.
Thanks for sharing such great content, 👍🏻👍🏻
For more crispy light I use to use (?) baby oil on her skin and then, sometimes, a little bit of photoshop. I enjoy your job my friend.
