I'm just starting out with headshots. I watch your videos more than I care to admit. I once had one of your one light setup videos playing as I tried follow along step by step. Please continue educating people like me with what you do Thank you in advance.....
She’s an amazing talented and beautiful subject. Gavin it’s so fun to watch you work and you’re a wonderful educator. Beautiful images and just one light.
No matter how long I’ve done this or how many times I watch your awesome instructional videos, I always learn something valuable, Gavin. Thank you and Season’s Greetings.
It's a small thing (pun intended) but pupil size passes an almost subconscious message and knowing when to make them large or small is an often overlooked skill.
Always something to learn. Also discovered now that Sofie has a fantastically beautiful smile which she should show off more often. Mostly, models are way too serious. 😊😊
Gavin has been at this for so long and yet every video is amazing and much we can learn. And such a lovely positive man. Thank you Gavin. PS: whenever Mark Wallace is in town, pls do a photo shootout like the old days
Always fun to see Hoey working his tiny studio to great effect. Yes (text introduction), communication is #1. In another industry this was my mantra: your work is 80% communication (with client and their stakeholders) and in this case, the other 20% was internal communication. Run a more than 1 person studio and it's the same. "One light" - I would argue that the reflector is a light too as it is actively positioned and angled, rather than passively used like a wall or floor. The communication being so important is why "recognition AI AF" has become very important to me. It allows me to not look through the camera and maintain contact with the sitter. Way back, with the Hasselblad or large format, this was a completely different more of operation. There's still no need to spray and pray because of the learning effects of way back, but the new technology can help a lot.
I just love this channel: as model and cosplayer it helps so much to understand the work of a photograph so much better and so I can be a better model / cosplayer myself. What Ii would love to see here a few times more often would be like cosplay shootings, setting up a set with a few more props or videos about locations (what makes a location great - especially outdoor).
Love the shots of Sophie 'not being a model'. I find that it is very difficult to get models to produce a normal, natural smile 😊.Far too often they take on a 'far away distant ' look.
Love the content Gavin! I recently started doing headshots for friends and family using a single continuous light and your videos have been a huge help!!! Love from Texas
❤Gavin no matter how many times I watch your videos, the pleasure is immense each time and there is always a learning cuve. Thank you for your mentoring.
Some really great advice Gavin especially getting the subject to use their hands. And if your subject has a vocation to bring some of that vocation into some of the head shots, great idea. Thanks for sharing this video. 😊
Thanks. I did corporate head shots for years (although not as many as yourself) keep it simple, make them smile, keep it short was usually my game plan 😉
gavin, i always see your videos from last various year....i learn lot from your videos....the way u r explaining, very nice.....as well as your energy 2 good dear @!!!
Outstanding! Gavin. Loved this one so much. Would love to see an outside shoot with the same lighting set up utilizing ugly backgrounds to get an even better shot / image. Thanks for the lesson
I always enjoy your videos but especially this one. I really liked the three variations and the demonstrations during the video. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving.
Just a small request. Would you be willing to do some videos with models of different age, size, skin tones? I'm just getting into portrait photography and I will most likely not be working with professional models with great skin and such. It would be really helpful to see the best strategies to shoot people with wrinkles, rounder faces and bodies, facial hair etc. Love your videos and instruction style Gavin.
Hi Gavin. As always another fantastic video to educate us all.Love watching your tutorials...cant get enough. Have a lovely festive season and stay blessed my friend.
Thanks Gavin for this informative video. You mentioned a future video about taking self head shots. A good question for this subject: I got many vintage, and also some new, manual lenses. I'd really like to use them when I do self portrait, but I can't find a way to focus properly. Is there a trick to make this easier ? Maybe there is simply no way... Thanks Gavin
aaaaaaannnnnd ANOTHER great video. you and Sophie are a great team, and youre right, having someone who has half a clue to start when it comes to posing/modeling is 90% of the results. if youre serious about doing a 'self-headshot' tutorial PLEASE DO! i have shot some of myself but even with pre-focus, or standing directly in front of the lens and starting the shot with focus etc, and shooting at 5.6 i still often get out of focus shots. (not that you can teach the camera to focus properly!) i havent subscribed because i dont want to get suggestions of others from adoramaTV. i dont watch those creators...
Gavin, how do you get the flash match the aperture on the camera when using a light meter? Do you really need a light meter for head shots? Love you instructional videos!
Absolutely loved this video! Very helpful, informative. Can’t wait to try these techniques. It would be even better if there were a workshop I can join in NY 😄
Great video! In general, how close to the background should you place your subject to avoid shadows? I struggle with this a bit. Also, a self-portrait video would be awesome!
Hi Helga. To avoid shadows it's not about the distance from the background but the angle of the light. Elevated and acute side angles of light can remove shadows (on head shots) on backgrounds at surprisingly close distances. On camera flash will throw a shadow onto the background even in a large studio!
Grate video Gavin Hoey. Question.....how do you clean your diffusion material on your softbox, do you put them in the washer, or do you hand wash them? Oh and is normal wash detergent suitable? 🤔
Hi Marcus. The "fabric" is usually pretty tough, so I usually try a scrub with a damp cloth followed with water and soap and if all else fails a cold hand wash.
Hi Gavin, I follow your videos as they are very weĺ constructed and helpful. I wondered what tips you might have for headshots/portraits for an older (70) female reluctant model.
Hi Robin. I did a whole live session on reluctant model portraits which might help ruclips.net/user/liveXcvpj8hi0R4?si=VfCOV5RKsn9xGnjl my reluctant model was at the opposite age range but I personally wouldn't change my approach because of someone's age.
Hi Gavin! Can you show us how you prepare portrait photos for sending to clients? What resolution do you use? In which formats do you save them? What color space do you work in? And how do you specifically send files to clients? On a flash drive? Via email? Or through cloud services? If possible, share details about this, as there is limited information available on the internet. Thank you!
Focal length has no impact on compression, it's one of those huge half truths that photographers repeat without checking (something I was guilty of for far to long). Lenses ONLY crop, it's DISTANCE that compresses... and I was probably 10 feet back.
You are definitely one that I keep coming back to because you make everything look so damn simple.... Question though. The white balance and the color card. I'd like to see more on how that works. I could google it or search youtube but I think I'd rather have the Hoey version of it. And... why are those color cards so damn expensive....? Look forward to a response...
Thanks for the kind words. Checkout this video for a detailed look at how and when I use the full Colorchecker Passport swatches ruclips.net/video/D_NVCS7sUPY/видео.htmlsi=WIRcPG7bjYg6ZI7p As for why they're are the price they are, is any thing in photography ever cheap 😏

Definitely underrated. Gavin is so good at this.

Thanks for the comment and I'm glad to have helped 👍
Yea like the continuous light for the small pupal effect. What a great tip.
YES!!! Smiling Sofie, that just makes her photos so much better in my opinion.
Omg. I just noticed how to make pupil smaller 10:07. Thank you Gavin for such a useful information. The tutorial was great as always
It's a small thing (pun intended) but pupil size passes an almost subconscious message and knowing when to make them large or small is an often overlooked skill.
Thank you@@GavinHoey
Our own head-shot, that is a great idea! Can you make a video on that subject?
You are an excellent photographer. I’ve been watching your videos for years👍
Excellent videos Gavin!!!
Always something to learn. Also discovered now that Sofie has a fantastically beautiful smile which she should show off more often. Mostly, models are way too serious. 😊😊
What a very charming person there 🤓😊. Thank Gavin for having made here shine.

And how do you specifically send files to clients? On a flash drive? Via email? Or through cloud services? Everything is virtual nowadays in my world. Resolutions are either what the client asked for or as high as I can supply.
Many thanks Gavin. Really enjoy your videos. Re. Compression, what was your focal length? Thanks.
Focal length has no impact on compression, it's one of those huge half truths that photographers repeat without checking (something I was guilty of for far to long).
Lenses ONLY crop, it's DISTANCE that compresses... and I was probably 10 feet back.
