I won't take credit for it - because I learned it from a video years ago - but when taking couple portraits I always have them hold each other and tell them to "take a big sniff of your partner, like you'll never be able to smell them again" which is usually followed by overexaggerated nostril noises, laughing, and some great captures.
I teared up watching this. I just had new headshots taken yesterday and the photographer really rattled my confidence. She directed me in a way that made me feel like I was doing something wrong. At the end I asked her about it and she said my photoshoot was below average because I couldn’t put the right energy out. Of course it confirmed all my fears about myself and really shook me. Watching you work makes me feel so much better because I know what I was missing was someone who directed me well and made me feel comfortable. I’m sad I spent so much money only to feel like crap about myself, but I feel better about myself knowing it was the photographer who didn’t support me.
You also have to not take it personally if the photographer is just giving direction to refine the image by asking you to turn your nose a little to the left or tilt the top of your head a little so you don't look so stiff or so your headshot doesn't end up looking like a passport photo. It doesn't mean, you are doing it wrong, just because they give you direction. No one's judging you. Photographers are used to working with people of different experience levels in front of the camera. I have some clients that are professional models and TV news anchors and they need very little direction, you just say go and they move through all the different angles, poses and expressions they know how to do and then other beginners need me to direct every single shot. It's ok, I can do that, because I was a professional model for 15 years myself. Maybe you weren't really listening to the photographer? Listening is a big part of a model or actor's job. I also think a lot of new models or actors or young people in general are just very self conscious and think they are being judged. You aren't. The photographer just wants your photos to look good and the better you are at listening to them give direction and follow that direction without getting your feelings hurt the better results you will have. I also think your generation might be a little too sensitive, everyone has made them think they are AMAZING and then they get out in the real world and they realize they aren't AMAZING and they don't know everything. It's ok, just chill and stop thinking your photographer is thinking "Hey you're doing it wrong." Because they're not.
You are not alone! For me, taking headshots is like going to the dentist but worse. I dread it every time. I think finding the right photographer doesn't happen overnight though. You have to try new ones until you find ur match.
Holy cow. Took a few of your tips to my latest location shoot. I’m a freakin rock star!!😂😂😂 Seriously, I was shooting a real estate agent for the usual stuff. At the end of the shoot she thanked me and said she had a lot fun doing the shoot. Even though I’ve had a good amount of success with my images, never had a model tell the process was fun. Thank you Peter😎
The ability to connect with your subject is the single most important (and sometimes most difficult) aspect of portrait photography. Hurley is a master
I have been watching Peter's tuition videos for years and I love the way that he connects with people who would normally feel awkward in front of the camera. There is a skill in bringing out the personality of the person being photographed and he definitely has it on mass. I am about to venture out on my own as a photographer and I hope I can take with me 1/100th of the skills that he has.
This is already incredible. In the first sentence where you said you want the subject to look at you, rather than the lens, is so important. As an ex model, I am about to embark on a section of my business called Confidence Infront of the Camera. I want to offer a service to photographers who havent the experience to direct or even realise the importance of personalising the image and connecting with the subject they are shooting. Thanks for this.
For fussy children: Do not look at my camera! For unhappy husbands: "Have you done any professional modeling?" Both lines garner the best results!!! Thanks, Peter!!! Love from the Karchers!
About midway through, and good for engagement photos. Should have a little repore before you say it. For couples: Pretend for a second you like each other.
Sharping the image out of the subject is done by connecting with the subject. easing the person allows you to mold out the image you want to capture by making the camera more of the background so the subject focas on you
Love the work and your skill, but not every client looks like this model; I would like to see the same process applied to the everyday person - not always the beautiful model where even the mistakes look amazing
I liked seeing how he directs the client. I feel like the biggest take of this particular video is to have your studio properly set up and equipped. Then, have a routine your models can go through that you are comfortable with directing. Be sure to use fun and unique ways to provide direction for the best results. I'd get my settings in my studio set how I love them, Think of a routine I could have people wanting headshots go through and think of fun ways to present that info.
Great response. Most times in these videos the photographer is using very camera friendly models. Would love to see more videos using non models who complain about being overweight, old etc. which is what corporate photographers deal with on a daily basis.
How do you avoid hot spots on the face? Looks like the bottom two lights are aimed past the subject, for soft feathering, but the top light is aimed directly at the client. Hmmm.
I wonder why he always works with stunning models, I want to see him working with not so appealing person. I think it would be way better to learn from. Girls like this are easy to coach
I can't resist. I get your point. However, can you imagine how a person would feel if you told them that you want them to participate in a video about photographing people who aren't really attractive?
It’s hard to get the subject you are photographing to come out from hiding behind their imitated magazine cover pose and loosen up and willingly present their true selves with pride. The subjects should gain the confidence to display to all their charm and charisma.
Thirsty!!! OMG OMG OMG ----you are hilarious and wonderful. I am soooooOOOOOooooo going to use THIRSTY this morning! I might pull ---Can you look like a ghost. Certainly not as good as thirsty.
Peter's talked about lighting and directing, so next up is gear! bhpho.to/3oe7JeK

We are sad to hear this and hope you have a better experience next time.

Sounds like a really poor photographer.. it’s their job to build your confidence.

I’m going to get my first head shots tomorrow and this is a fear of mine.

The intangible parts of photography (non equipment related) is the hardest to grasp. Great video
Glad you learned something new, thanks for watching!
Loving the constant reminders to breathe! Most people forget that part.

Her smile is so gorgeous!

What is the silliest thing you've said to someone when taking their photo?
For fussy children: Do not look at my camera! For unhappy husbands: "Have you done any professional modeling?" Both lines garner the best results!!! Thanks, Peter!!! Love from the Karchers!

Stop looking like someone forced to walk on lego brics

As a classical singer, I'm in awe and appreciation at you knowing what the sternocleidomastoids are. 😅
Anatomy things lol
i learned about them from reading The Bonfire of the Vanities
omg I love Peter Hurley
This is why i take landscapes. hahah. People need friendly photographers 😜
So I assume the strobes are the background lights as the Flex kit is continuous?
How is he so calm, Id be giggling the whole time giving directions.
Thanks Mr. Hurley! This video was clear, clean, to the point and very instructive! Thanks again!

The standard is the standard. The model knows her stuff, but what he says and does wouldn’t change.
Such useful tips, gonna try directing my friend on kahma
Thanks for this...it's right on time for me, as I have a real estate office corporate headshot photo op this weekend! Thank you!
Take notes, this amazing content!
Nicely done…again. I had forgotten the ropes thing.
video starts at 2:39
Great tutorial. Is the possibility to get information about lightning setup?
You can find out more about the setup in the "Continuous Lighting" chapter of this video! bit.ly/3gDVclt
Thank you!

You can learn everything to get that signature look on Peter's Headshot Crew!
Great work
What lens are you using? just curious.
Looks like the RF 70-200mm f/2.8
This was great!
Ngl I felt called out when you yelled to not turn on burst mode haha.
It’s for your own good.
wow so nice lesson
Don’t do burst… proceeds to do burst at 4:53 😂
