      Why not read up on it? I learned how to photo in hi speed sync ( and just how cool it is!) way before I understood the technicalities of it.

      Wish you had commented on the shutter speeds used for the shots. The most striking shot IMO was that of the model wearing black & back hat just after sunset. But I would think there would be no issue in using regular strobe, not HSS, because I could see the lights on the bridge - and that would mean SS of maybe 1/8 to 1/4 second.

    You know what... Joe's skill is seeing beauty in that cityscape - at first look I would have probably gone meh... but it's is the photographers vision that takes the water, the ripples, the model, and bridges and puts it all together - thanks for opening my eyes to opportunity

    Great images, have no idea how you got them except you used high speed sync. Did you just trial and error and view your screen and histogram, did you use ttl, etc

    Great video but I am a bit confused. You mention that you were using the 50mm and then the b roll shows 35mm. Did you use both?

    Question for you... I see so many photographers such as yourself using mostly female models. I have two sons and two (7 and 14 years old) grandsons. I would like to get some tips on shooting boys. So I can do a photo shoot for my boys and give them as birthday presents to their mothers.

    I have been informed by Godox that the HSS with the canon R5 is not compatible is this wrong ?? I have the canon R5 but wasn’t sure if the HSS and TTL worked with the R5. Very confused at the moment as to if it will work or not

    I Googled his name with the model Haley and found this on his Facebook page...'50mm 1.2 RF lens. Shot at 1/5000th and 1.2 aperture in high speed sync mode.'

    Interesting and good video. Only one thing I find... "different". Joel, you mentioned the new 50mm 1.2 for shallow DoF but in the video it showed you using a 35mm lens.

    Hss in big strobes has been around for years. I remember using hss with my back then alien bees 1600 and pocket wizards. This was back in 2012.

    Nice shots and BTS. I also love my Godox. I would suggest using extension head, even though you loose some power, it makes the setup so much easier.

    You prove every time that it is not the grade of the tool that matters, but the techniques of the hand using the tool. I was expecting a photographer of your stature to use $2500 and above strobes; but to my surprise, not even close.

      Not Joel, but I would say yes. The back ground is not too bright. With full sun, you need power and even one AD600 at full power isn't enough. You then need two of them with dual extension head (1200ws)

    I really wish he had gone over the specs instead of just generalizing everything.... i.e.he says things like "shallow depth of field" etc. instead of being specific with what aperture he's using.

      Joel said he was shooting @ f/1.2 and since it's a HSS video he was probably in 4kish shutter speed, most new lights can sync upto 8k shutter speed, just my thoughts but I could be wrong.

      he stoped doing that long time ago... he has courses that he sells now online where he goes into details of the BTS ... here he just "gives away" what he is looking for and what he is expecting at an end result... all online photographers that have established themselves as RUclipsrs are doing that... maybe the consequence is that they will loose subscribers...

      Joel has always been about teaching you to be a creative artist as opposed to just memorizing technical settings (which will change somewhat in every scenario).

      Just use a shallow dof that is what it means. If you would need that much hand holding you may need to pay for a class.
