I recently unsubscribed from Peter McGinnon for that exact reason. I liked his energy, and sometimes he had useful information etc., but at some point I just realized; he's wasting my time with this bullshit about snow scooters and coffee and what not. Not if there's channels like Sean that provide high integrity, high quality and no BS content like this.
@@arnenoot9948 haha! That sounds a bit extreme, but i get your point. I usually skip 3-5 minutes ahead and if they still haven't gotten to the point by then, SKIP!
I think I prefer the way Sarah loves waiting for Sean talking about HSS and light sources... however, I think Sarah's eyes show to us the mutual love ;)
A good tip for people without a strobe or high speed sync: You can use your speed light and experiment with ND-filters. You’ll loose less power on your speed light this way. If it’s still not enough, you can bring your light in even closer (depending on your choice of focal length, subject size and framing of course).
I'm always left inspired from watching your videos Sean. I'm right at the infancy of my photography career, been interested for many years and at 35 I'm taking the plunge and bought a camera, and I'm soaking up all this knowledge from all over the place. Your videos are not only very informative, but for me at least they convey a sense of calm and focus at the same time. There's a lot to think about, but the information is relayed in such a way that it feels like with every sentance there's a hint of "you can do this, you'll be fine" submerged in the wording. Thank you.
"If you can't explain something in simple terms, you don't understand it well enough." Sean definitely explains everything in simple, easily digested terms.
This is the first time I've been able to really understand balancing the ambient light with a strobe, thank you! I'm going to practice this weekend. And Sarah is a wonderful, natural model. Just lovely.
I cannot stop watching your content. Every video is SO informative, as a beginner photographer I’m feeding off your wealth of knowledge & experience. Sending a million thank you’s your direction.
I've always avoided working this way, only because I have felt it would be complex or somehow awkward, but this shows it doesn't need to be so. That AD200 is so impressive, and easy to take out into the field too by the looks of it. Thanks Sean, you've, as always, got me thinking!
I’ve been searching through what seems like hundreds of videos on this subject snd you are the first one to actually explain what your doing. Every setting snd every step, instead of simply dashing through doing it, showing images and expecting me to intuit how you came up with your settings. Thank you!
Would just like to add that using HSS will reduce a speedlight's output power. As demonstrated by Sean here, the AD200 can perform adequate HSS work for portrait work at 1/2 power in bright daylight. However, by attaching an ND filter(3-5 stops) it's possible to increase the speedlight's output power. Something to consider.
I cant believe how fucking amazing and informative your videos are. It's like a masterclass service without the subscription. You've helped me up my photography game a ton! Cant thank you enough for these
I'm so bad at maths, and I've been doing it your way for several years now. It's actually liberating creatively to do it without a meter and crunching numbers.exactly
Thank You for showing high-speed sync that looks so subtle and natural. It's hard to find an educational video in which the author provides both facts and amazing rezults!
I was just struggling with this yesterday with the AD200 outside with a friend doing portraits. This is exactly what i was looking for. Thank you so much!
Wow... This is changing the game for me. Looking to invest in this stuff! I usually shoot just with natural light. Would love to learn how to do this to get more options
Great points, Sean. My thoughts exactly...”shoot as though someone thinks you got lucky with a reflection.” To me, light is still a supporting actor, not the main attraction.
Looks to me like the 55/1.8. Such a brilliant lens. That and the 28/2 are the two I bring with me pretty much everywhere. So small, light and powerful.
Awesome Sean. Just as an additional note regarding the trigger at 3:00: users gotta make sure that is for the right brand of camera as well. Keep up the great work
Probably the best tutorial I have read on this subject, particularly you debunking the aperture controls subject illumination, and shutter speed controls the background myth!
The shots in the woods were really good in terms of light. The sunlit bushes were to the side strobe light was coming from, so she is almost like lit by the sun. Neat :)
"ratios are just a number, and i am terrible at math" LMAO! i wish there were more photographers willing to explain everything like you do ! I hope that you can double the subs by the end of this year!! Cheers from Portugal
Your way to teach flash is simple and useful I like your attitude in photography I can feel your passion so deeply i wish your channel can let more people understand the spirit of taking photos
Sean, you have some of the best informational videos out there. Love the work and as an enthusiast photographer I keep coming back to your channel - you pack a deceptive amount of information into these well crafted (well filmed) videos. Please don't stop!
Love that you mention balancing the background and subject. Looks much better in my opinion. I see so many portraits, especially on IG, where the subject is so unnaturally bright compared to the background that it feels like a studio shot as opposed to a location shoot
Great video! Another tip for those who don’t have a high sync flash, is using a ND filter to help lower the overall exposure and see if the flash can keep up at full power.
Very good instruction Sean. ND filters are helpful as a third level of control as well. Some say Promist filters are helpful with softening skin tones with outdoor and flash portraits as well.
Hi Sean. I started pursing photography as a serious hobby underwater two decades ago. Now I shoot mainly bird-in-flight and landscape and do not own a strobe. Nonetheless, I keep coming back to your channel and today I came away with some new insights about fill light that could help my landscape compositions. Not with gear, just thinking more about natural fill light reflectors that could improve the light when it choses not to be ideal. Thanks for sharing.
Another great video Sean we English aren’t popular on the tube as the Americans but your style and production is working great! Beautiful photos of course
From severals speedlights tutorial videos, Yours are the very best beacuse You teach Us the secrets at free, I have improve a lot with Your teachings, Thank You from Mexico
Again another cracking vid, like others have said you are so easy to understand and indeed gives courage that any of us amateurs CAN also get up to speed with using additional lighting, kudos!!
Another fantastic and informative video. Appreciate the clarification about the transmitter, and it’s so refreshing to know that a RUclipsr is listening! I look forward to your videos, and will look for those ones you’ll make in the future, especially balancing ambient light indoors with strobe.
Personally, I do like to darken more the sky and make my subject pop out of the background. But occasionally, I do balance ambient light (harsh or soft). Your explanation of it is spot on, easy to learn.
Hello Sean, I've been following your channel for a while now and I must tell you that you are one of the few people on youtube that have something to say regarding photography. Keep up the good work!
Man Sean, you have so much knowledge and you pass it on so smoothly. But, your heart comes through in your photography. I just bought a digital camera a couple of months ago, but I need to learn the tools to make a photo from my heart. This lesson certainly adds to that and I will keep soaking up information until I can. But thank you for helping the little people, or the newbies. You are so wise. Keep it up please…
Thank you Sean so much for your videos. I've never tried strobe lighting before but I've learned a ton from your videos. Thanks for your unbiased, direct to the point tutorials. You've earned another subscriber.
Sean, I am brand new to photography and obviously came across your site in my information search. I love your style a lot. Your philosophical content is spot on... in fact you should definitely be doing more motivational type work... but don’t listen to me... love it, absolutely love it. Blessings!!!
Really helpful to me. I can't afford a light meter. Not really interested in getting that technical anyway. I'm a novice and still mastering manual mode and the exposure triangle. Always knew a flash was super helpful outside but never really understood how to get all the settings right in daylight. Thanks for breaking it down and simplifying this for us newbies. This teaching style gets me up and running and improving my skills quickly.
Sean, this is an outstanding tutorial on balancing strobe light outdoors! I love your style and straight forward approach. I recently purchased a Nikon Z7 and am learning how to use it with strobes. I'm a new follower and am enjoying going back into your catalog of videos! Thank you for all the hard work and sharing of knowledge!
Sean...very interesting videos you make. It's great to see "in use" examples instead of people talking about charts and numbers. Seeing you in action gives one the ability to actually go out and do it themselves. Bravo!
I love how Sean gets straight to the point without any BS B-roll and pointless intro-babble.

I agree. Plus he explains it in a manner and at a speed we can all learn from.
I wish someone loved me the way Sean Tucker loves high speed sync
Not liking HSS is like not liking puppies.. or pizza
If you are into HSS check out Jason Lanier's YT work.
I think I prefer the way Sarah loves waiting for Sean talking about HSS and light sources... however, I think Sarah's eyes show to us the mutual love ;)
Genuinely laughed out loud, the man appreciates the finer things
The best comment on the video 🤣🤣🤣

Straightforward, none of that absurd music and jumping around, and great, usable advice. Terrific job, Sean. Your videos are excellent.
Thanks!
Thanks for the support

Thank you for not using 1000 jumpcuts to entertain. Very relaxing and educational.

Thanks my friend:)
Sean this is a game changer for me. It was so eloquently explained without constant jumpcuts and needless b-roll. Thank you.
Even when I already know the techniques, I always look forward to these videos. Just comforting to watch and listen to.
I don't even shoot portraiture, and I still love these videos. I can listen to Sean talk about photography all day.

Absolutely the best photography channel on RUclips.
Every time I watch one of Sean's videos I learn something new to add to my skill base - that's actually quite rare in my experience of RUclips videos.

Good video again.
You're the best, Sean. Your shots are just wonderful and your videos are stirring and motivating. There's no one I enjoy more on RUclips right now.
